When the Wicked Play

𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙍𝙇𝙄𝙀

I was raised in chains and left for dead.

That's enough darkness to fuel anyone's rage.

The need for vengeance courses through my veins and the little bit of sanity I had left vanished in the shallow grave I dug myself out of.

Only a man with the blackest of souls and blood on his hands will be able to handle the kind of crazy I hide in my hollow heart.

Lucky for me he has both, and the next grave I'm standing over won't be my own.

𝙅𝘼𝙓

I'm not a good man, or even a decent one.

So when Charlie comes crashing into my life with a thirst for blood that rivals my own, I send her on her way.

I have my own problems to take care of.

So why do I find myself tracking the little terror down to give her exactly what she wants?

I'll be her loaded gun.

All she has to do is point me in the right direction and pull the trigger, but this girl is a Queen of Destruction all on her own.

I liked this one. It was a fast and interesting read. I could compare it with a mix between Criminal Minds and Dexter, but from the victim's POV.

It definitely wasn't perfect!! There were some things that either were not addressed at all or just slightly touched. But for a short read, under 150 pages, it was entertaining, kept me engaged, and I was so rooting for the FMC to get her revenge and life back !!!

I would have loved more detailing on the MMC, his sister, his friends, etc. But it's fine. The main character of the book is the FMC, and it was her time to shine 🥺🥺.

What to expect
- dark read, because she has a VERY traumatic past, luckily for us, the readers, not everything was detailed on page, but despicable things are mentioned
- violence, etc., since she transforms into an avenging "angel"; she's not quite right in the head, but hey, it's expected based on her past 😭😭😪😪
- some spice, the scenes were quick, but it was just enough for this couple
- he calls her "little terror" 🤭 I liked that

⚠️ I would have loved some more focus on her healing, her getting at least some health checks since she was heavily abused physically and mentally in that place. But let's assume she did get those, but of page. Also, she definitely adjusted too easily to real life. The timeline of the book was very rushed, and I get it. It's not a full novel, so some details are overlooked. I chose to close my eyes on how quickly she got physical with the MMC, considering her trauma just a few days prior, because it was clear that her coping mechanism was already all over the place.

I will definitely try some more books by this author.

This is a fast paced Novella that I hope turns into a full novel at some point. I wanted more by the time I was done.

You have a woman who was held captive and used and abused by her bio dad and anyone else that either found her or was sent down to her. She wakes up buried alive and her journey begins.

She eventually makes her way to a small bar where she finds kindred spirits who do everything they can to help her get settled and eventually revenge for what happened.

I can't help but picture this turning into an MC why choose romance at some point. At least that was the vibe I got from reading this. I'm on board for anything that would enhance this story and the amazing characters and story plot that left me wanting so much more!!!

I received an advanced review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily!

*ARC* I just finished “When The Wicked Play” and I thought it was a good short read. It’s a good book to pick up if you have limited time to read or heck just need a short introduction to darker themes such as SA. I saw where the author mentioned maybe turning this novella into a full length novel. I’d definitely be interested in reading it if she ever decides to do that. This book has so much potential. I imagine it giving a “Mindfuck series” vibe. If she were to do a full length novel then I’d like to see a deeper dive into both of the main characters past. Like flashbacks. Also I’d love to learn more about the Wicked MC. I’m left wanting to see more not just from this couple but from this author. I mean the ending left me panting.

“Yes!” she replies.
“Whose dick is it, baby?”
“Mine.”
“I can’t hear you.”
“My dick! Mine!”

I'm sorry but that was a skimfest

She is someone’s dirty secret no more and is set on revenge and picks up a side piece to do it. He calls her little terror. Best nickname ever! I loved this FMC, the plot was short and sweet and oh so spicy! Just how I like ‘em!

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  SPICE: 🌶️🌶️

ANGST: 💔💔💔

Cliffhanger: ❌

Do I recommend it? ✔️

Trigger Warnings: ☠️☠️☠️

Tropes: dark romantic suspense

Charlie's life was pure hell on earth as she spent years in chains and then left for dead while being buried alive. That much darkness could fuel rage in anyone. The need for vengeance flowed through every vein in her body, and what little sanity she had left vanished as she dug herself out of the shallow grave she was left in. It would take a unique man to accept her and the darkness within. Jax wouldn't be considered a good man by most, but his dark soul and bloodied hands fit Charlie just right. The last thing he expected was to have a girl like Charlie charge into his life. He doesn't have the time to deal with her issues, but he can't let his "Little Terror" go. He'll be her loaded gun. All she must do is point him in the direction to aim. But then again, his Queen of Destruction is capable of taking care of it all on her own.

This short, dark read was utterly addicting and over way too fast. I was glued to my Kindle from start to finish. After reaching the end, all I wanted was more. I really hope this author does as she suggested and writes a full novel. She set up so many possibilities for the future. I will jump on the ride in a heartbeat. Both Charlie and Jax's past were heartbreaking, but it created two individuals made for each other. This is a rather dark romance with several possible triggers, so please educate yourself. If the triggers don't stop you, I highly recommend this read. This is my honest opinion, freely given .

“Jax thinks he’s a monster from nightmares. He’s yet to understand that while he may be a monster, I’m a nightmare come to life. One of their own making.”

Four and a half bloody, unhinged stars! When the Wicked Play was a fast paced, spicy, twisted novella and my only complaint is that I. want. more. There were so many good set ups here and I left feeling just the tiniest bit unsatisfied because I wasn’t ready for it to end yet. Tristina is a new to me author but I’m officially hooked and this certainly won’t be my last read from her catalogue.

“Careful, little terror, there’s a thin line between love and hate. It may be hard to tell which one I’m chasing.”

Jax and Charlie have a whirlwind of a pitch black romance and I left this book wondering who was the darker soul. I suppose it doesn’t matter because they complimented each other so well—soul mates formed in hell. Charlie was unhinged and wild, yet badass and fierce, my very favorite flavor of FMC, while Jax was cold and calculating but wildly affectionate toward and protective of Charlie. I couldn’t get enough of these two.

I’m dying to know more about Jax’s backstory and the Wicked MC and the end of this novella left me longing for the epic journey I just know these two are going to have together. Crossing all my fingers and toes that Tristina does decide to extend this one, as she alluded to at the end.

Wickedly wonderful!
A short, twisted and fast paced novella that will have you wanting more!
Like most books, I am drawn in by the cover and the cover of this book was no different. (I'm a sucker for skulls.)
The overall plot of this novella was really good and in my opinion rather unique, but I'm not going to elaborate for fear of spoilers. The relationship between Charlie (FMC) and Jax (MMC) happens really quickly and is causing me to want more of them. I really loved Charlie's development and growth throughout.
This was my first book by Tristina, so I will definitely be reading more from this author.
Highly recommend this dark and twisted novella.

This was super fast paced and very dark. Charlie and jax's story starts off very different than most couples. She had dug herself out of a shallow grave and happened upon a bar where she met Jax and his sister ashlyn. For some reason she felt comfortable with him and let out her whole story. At first he thought she was crazy and told her off, but after she had run off he realized that he shouldn't have lost his temper and thankfully found her again. Overall it was a dark and twisted novella that I would love to see turned into a full length novel. There were a few spicy scenes that were hot af.

This is a wicked dark romance novella and it is not for the weak so please read trigger warnings. This was an incredible novella that's dark and twisted, I loved this so much and I can't wait for more from this author in the future.

Charlie was locked away in an asylum her whole life and when she finally escapes she's out for revenge against those who harmed her. She meets Jax who is a contract killer as they call it and he thinks he's the monster but he has no idea just how much rage Charlie has pent up and he just has to have her.

This is a fast paced novella that I read in about 2 hours or less. It is a dark romance with some sensitive themes, so do check the content warnings.

The premise of this book is great! I love the concept and the two characters would probably be really interesting and compelling in a full length novel! I enjoyed Charlie and Jax’s story and thought certain scenes and dialogue were highly entertaining or gripping.

I thought even for a novella it was a little too quick. The story was lacking some detail and groundwork. I’d definitely be interested to see what Tristina Brockway does for the full length novel!

I think the main issue I had with the book was a lot of it was tell, not show. This felt a little too much like you’re in the head of our two main characters. First person POV is a delicate balance and this leaned a little more towards mental stream of consciousness rather then tight storytelling.

There were little things that I found to be contradictory or required too much suspended disbelief like Charlie knowing dog breeds at all, or having clean running water in an abandoned building.

I am head over heels for Charlie and Jax. Tristina, I 100% need a full length novel, please, please, please. I'd love to see each unaliving situation in more detail, get a little more suspense, and over course, more of that spicy action. All that being said, as this is currently a novella, it was fantastic just the way it was.

These two were perfect in every way. I loved their vibe from the very beginning when there was a little hate to lovers vibe going on, and all the way to the end when they were adorably in love. The scene where Jax apologizes for being a eggplant head was possibly my favorite, I just loved how their relationship turned on its head there.

This was fairly spicy for a novella, but not over the top. I thought Tristina did a wonderful job of bringing us some dirty talk and hot spice in a neat little package. I feel like if we do get a full length story someday the spice is going to be top notch between these two and it wouldn't surprise me if we get five chilis.

Even if we don't get a full length for Charlie and Jax, I'd love to see more from this world. We didn't get to know his friends very well, but I'm very intrigued about them and would love to hear more from his sister too.

I loved Charlie and Jax so much! Charlie was every bit the unhinged stabby FMC I was hoping for and Jax was amazing as the grumpy but supportive MMC who was happy to let Charlie take the lead.

To say Charlie has had a rough life would be putting it mildly so it really wasn’t any wonder that after being left for dead in a shallow grave her priority was to get revenge on those who hurt her. Jax also had a rough life and so pretty much pushed everyone away who wasn’t his sister or his closest friends. He’s not really sure what to make of Charlie at first but quickly becomes obsessed and possessive. Just what I love in a MMC.

Charlie’s IDGAF attitude had me cracking up. She was utter chaos sent to wreak havoc on the world and Jax was just along for the ride. I loved the two of them together so much.

Tristina said that this might be expanded into a full length novel at some point and I’m really hoping that happens. I was left wanting so much more!

I would absolutely love a continuation of Char and Jax! It was quick, interesting, fun, gore-y, and spicy all wrapped up in what seemed to start off like a horror story. I would say here is more plot than spice and the spice is a 3/5. Plot is 5/5 and for a short novel it left me wanting so much more, I hope that it does turn into a full novel. I had a lot of fun reading this and it was a great short read for a day at the beach or pool if you have a good poker face.

A quick, dark and twisted story.
This wicket story will have you out of the grave to read.
When two murders get together there is lots of spice and nothing can stop them from getting the revenge Charlie so desperately dreams of.

"I'm no hero, little terror. I'm the villain," he states with certainty. "Good. Villains are more fun anyway."

Definitely a good short read! 😌😈

The story starts off from the very beginning. Charlie finds herself buried alive in a grave. Charlie manages to get herself out, and walks until she finds a bar. At the bar she meets siblings Jaxton and Ashlyn.

After spilling her crazy story, of being raised in an insane asylum with her mother, who was a patient, and the doctor who fathered her. Charlie is determined to get revenge on everyone who wronged her, and Jax is happy to go along for the ride.

This is a quick novella, that had me laughing out loud multiple times. I love Charlie, she’s such a badass character. She lived in hell for her first 18 years, and isn’t completely broken.

POV(s): Dual—First Person
Relationship: M/F
Genre(s): Dark Contemporary Romance, Novella

➸ I feel like we were more so told about the FMC’s unhinged/psycho behavior than shown it, which was a bit disappointing. I like to see the crazy on page.

”I’m not a white knight. I’m the monster from nightmares, not the hero from fairytales.”

➸ I loved the premise of the story, but the pacing and writing wasn’t my favorite. In large part, I think this is due to the constraints the story faces as a novella. I would 100% read an extended version of it, which would hopefully allow more in depth development (which the author mentions is a possibility in her author’s note).

”I don’t get fairytales. They don’t exist in my world. Nightmares are my happily ever after. There are no heroes in my story. Everyone is a monster, and the girl saves her damn self.”

➸ This story had more than a few occurrences which required me to suspend my disbelief. Two off the top of my head:

1) The FMC, who has lived in captivity her entire life, somehow identifies a teacup maltipoo.

2) A supposedly abandoned warehouse still a) had running water, which b) the FMC was immediately able to drink straight from a bathroom faucet. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t the water have had to run a bit to clear out the sediment that built up in the unused pipes? Additionally, she was able to get warm water to shower with. Maybe I’m wrong and the warehouse wasn’t abandoned?

”Monsters not only come out at night, but they walk among the living during the light of day. Nightmares, however, are often born in the dead of night and take on a life of their own.”

➸ Context clues implies that the MMC is in a motorcycle club, but we’re never outright told. I’d just like some clarification.

Dnf. This wasn’t edited was it….because it says it was but there are some odd phrases, I didn’t see misspellings, but a lot of inconsistencies.

The cover is pretty nice to look at though!

Also, the main character is not a girl’s girl. But she’s so unlikable she isn’t a person’s person either.

First of all, NOT FAIR that this is a novella! I would do anything for a full length novel for Charlie and Jax! Second of all, this is my introduction to Tristina Brockway and I can confidently say, I will continue to read Brockway’s work — this novella got me hooked!

Charlie and Jaxton Jameson Jagger are a match made in heaven! She escaped hell to be met with her own personal, and hot, devil, Jax. Their attraction is instant and a little angsty at first but explodes into a blazing fire. Brockway set us up for something more and I am CRAVING more and more of them!

This novella is dark and the characters empower each other and boy oh boy, this was a good read. If you’re looking for something quick that ticks all the boxes of a dark romance with an unhinged FMC and possessive MMC, then hop onto “When the Wicked Play.”

I suggest running to get this as soon as it’s released. I’ve been excited since I saw the cover for this novella and it did not disappoint.

What Charlie went through her whole life is messed up but she literally survives being buried alive after being raised secluded in an asylum and her retribution is fabulous!

Jax I love watching him grow as well, to support Charlie in everything. I’d like to know more about Jax and his sister Ashlyn’s story, how they came to be where they are.

There are not a ton of smut scenes in my opinion but it does not deter from the book at all. The story is incredible and will have you turning page after page to see what’s going to happen.

I highly recommend this book. This is actually the first novella I’ve read and it’s definitely a favorite and one I will recommend a lot!

I wish this was a full length book! I’m hoping she will revisit Charlie and Jax and give them a longer book because she made it impossible not to love these two. Charlie is wild and blunt and not afraid of anything. Jax is his own kind of monster and even after trying to push her away realizes pretty quickly that he can’t stop thinking about her. The more he learns the more he realizes how perfectly her monster fits with his. Now he will help her burn the world if that’s what she wants. It’s short and to the point and definitely a nice break in between those long series. Go grab this if dark and crazy is your style.

This book deserves the five stars. I immediately was reeled in with Charlie’s personality, even after digging herself out of a grave, her dark humor won out. Jax was exactly the kind of MMC she needed to be able to get her revenge on everyone who wronged her, and I loved their relationship. The storyline was so easy to follow and it was a relatively quick, easy read.

I know it was mentioned the author might turn this into a full length novel, and I really do hope that’s true. I would love to see more of Jax and Charlie!
