Empire #17

Resistance

Rate this book
IMPERIAL ASSASSINATION!

Mere hours after the coronation, Gail Anne Burke - the Empress Arsinoe - is struck down and lay dying. The attack was by the unlikeliest and most unexpected of methods. Tracking down the method is the first order of business.

But who is responsible? The enemies of the Throne, now bent on reform, are almost too numerous to count. The sector governors, estranged from the Throne and unwilling to give up their power. The old nobilities of the Alliance nations, yearning for royal status once more.

And the hidden enemy, the subtle enemy, the enemy behind the scenes: the plutocratic families of the old Democracy of Planets. Wealthy, powerful, and bent on bringing down the Empire that defeated them three centuries before.

Shane wrote a good review. Its worth a read. Were this the first or second volume, it might work as a light adventure but not as book 17.

Rather than read on, please look at my review of "Dark Horse", a good story by Diener or Powers of the Earth (a silly story) and the comments by a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi). If that was too much of an ask, please move on to Shane or some other reviewer. Thank you.

GLORY TO UKRAINE !!!!!

The books are cycling the same plot again and again. I think that this series has exhausted his reader base. The books are saccharine rather than a setting in which characters express real emotion. The characters were wooden from Book One and the world building was patchwork in the first book but is now a tattered mess.

The power structure which is a non-hereditary monarchical (?) structure that features imperial adoption and no other mechanism for candidate selection is ridiculous. An emperor or king who will not rule will be ruled instead.

The last Prussian monarch started a war which destroyed European dynasties, ended the reign of the older powers and broke the hold of imperialistic capitalist financial and cultural structures on the working classes. He recognized the insanity of his decision but when he attempted to reverse the mobilisation, was told by his generals that reversing course would disrupt the railroad system. Afraid to look weak (as if it was not obvious to his 'subjects'), he chose to watch his empire be destroyed in a conflict he knew it could not win.

Monarchies are not meritocratic, else only one in four (or less) of the Roman Imperators would ever have held power. The more often this writer repeats this silly fantasy, the less his loyal readers will expect from him. If there were more demand for quality in US science fiction, his chosen path would be career ending. Alas it is not. And thus ends this installment of "How the plot crumbles".

Once I've brought my older reviews up to the standards demanded by my semi-literate commenters, I probably will step away from this genre altogether (and certainly from Goodreads, though I suspect that it won't be supported for that much longer). I watch more than read science fiction at the moment and with Netflix (and all the other services) offering much better written stories than the low effort drivel, I now have choices.

Magellan TV and Curiosity Stream/Nebula carry a good number of documentaries, which I like. At a cost of $15 USD for a yearly subscription, I am well pleased with Curiosity Stream/Nebula. For solid recommendations and a community of serious readers, I go to YouTube. Since it also carries channels that cover my other interests, it is perfect for me. Some favorites are.

For anyone already drawn into this series, Resistance is a must-read.

Emperors in Weyand's universe have faced daunting opposition before, but this book is an exercise in watching the ripples grow and grow, as the reader wonders just how the hell big the stone must be that has made them. Of course, the Emperor and Empress are no easy prey for the conspirators. Meanwhile, Weyand sprinkles in his trademark touches of humor, set against chilling context.

I sometimes had trouble keeping track of who was who and who was saying what, but then my memory isn't what it never was.

I really wanted to enjoy this a great deal more. I like the series and really appreciate the elements of 'rebuilding' the Empire. It just feels too easy. There isn't enough conflict. I don't want to delve into spoilers but it seems that Ptolemy and Arsinoe should face some challenges in their efforts.

Very good series

Just like the rest of the series, this book just won't let you stop reading. Little more action or fighting would be nice, but isn't expected. Most assuredly in the david weber class of writing!

Mr. Weyand does his usual fine job of telling an engrossing tale

This is a very good story of government reform from within. I do think it's a bit simplistic in the level of resistance to the changes made.

Awesome Story

If this book was longer I would have needed an IV drip and Depends as I could not stop devouring its content. This story of the blue bloods trying to kill the empress through her nanites exposes a generational threat to the empire.

The enemy trounced

Good guys and a massive computer take most of the background guys funds. Tractors castigated and penniless. Enemy engenders new tactics.
