The Chosen One Part I The most fearsome villain of all time returns with an all-new series! When Anakin Skywalker fell, both to the pull of the dark side and to the blade of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he rose back up, more machine than man. Having lost everything that was once dear to him, the former chosen one must take his first steps into a darker world…as Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith!
Charles Soule is a #1 New York Times-bestselling novelist, comics author, screenwriter, musician, and lapsed attorney. He has written some of the most prominent stories of the last decade for Marvel, DC and Lucasfilm in addition to his own work, such as his comics Curse Words, Letter 44 and Undiscovered Country, and his original novels Light of the Jedi, The Endless Vessel, The Oracle Year and Anyone. He lives in New York.
When I first heard about this series, I found it ridiculous that the series wouldn't have a title different from Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader series. It could've been called Vader Begins, or even "Vader: Year One" as Charles Soule has referred to it. I remember hearing that the full title would be Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, but it seems to simply be titled Darth Vader here, with the arc title being The Chosen One, which I found surprising.
This first issue isn't particularly bombastic, but I get that this is setting up the series. It begins right from the end of Revenge of the Sith, with Vader having learned about Padme's death after waking up in the suit. It almost looks like the scene itself is revised, but I suppose it's just the panels skipping over certain parts. Although it's weird now to think that right after that scene Vader uses the Force on Sidious, who then uses Force Lightning on him.
Though the art style is not really my forte, I am intrigued by the premise. It feels like this series may flesh out things that the novel Ahsoka does not fully touch upon. Once again, fans are told that the Sith bleed Kyber crystals to turn them red. I am curious about which Jedi Vader will need to get his crystal from. Part of me thinks that we will get yet another version of the death of Shaak Ti, which would feel superfluous. And I doubt that obscure Jedi Council member Coleman Kcaj would be used. I do look forward to learning more about how Jedi become Inquisitors, but I do question whether any of that will be in this arc. Perhaps the Jedi Vader gets his crystal from is the Grand Inquisitor when he was a Jedi? I guess we will have to wait and see.
Right now, I'm cautiously optimistic about this series since Charles Soule has a mixed success rate in my opinion. I have not yet gotten past the first two arcs of Poe Dameron, but I recall some weird un-Star Wars-like stuff in those comics. I liked aspects of Lando but thought that the writing was messy. And I really enjoyed Obi-Wan & Anakin. So this really could be a wild card, and there's no knowing yet how great this series may be.
I should also mention that this issue includes a short story by Chris Eliopoulis, who has written a few other goofy droid stories with art in the vein of Calvin and Hobbes. Having this kiddy art style in a story centered on Vader Force choking Imperials is really jarring. And it is also annoying not knowing when exactly this takes place. I did not really care much for this repetitive story.
A pretty good issue. The art was great, I like the lightsaber connection with this issue/series and the Ahsoka novel, and the relationship between Vader and Sidious looks to be an interesting one.
This book follows Anakin Skywalker shortly after rising from his mortal ashes to become Palpatine's apprentice, Darth Vader. Palpatine has told Vader that he is the cause of Padme's death, sending Vader into a rage and causing everything around him to be destroyed. This angers Palpatine because he is thrown back by Vader's "force" fury and punishes him.
Once Palpatine sees that his punishment has worked, he takes Vader to show him that the Jedi are finished and the lightsabers are being destroyed. Vader seems to be a bit upset by this. He had some hope to have one of the sabers even Yoda's but Palpatine has other ideas. He takes Vader on a trip and instructs him to seek out a Jedi and take their kyber crystal so that it may be corrupted to fit Vader's needs as part of his new lightsaber.
I don't want to go further because it would spoil the ending but I will say I was impressed with this story. This takes us to an early part of Vader's early beginnings and gives us a glimpse of the terror he will eventually unleash upon the galactic empire and anyone who opposes Palpatine's rule.
This one really had no action. It only showed you the moments from his rebirth to the searching of a new kyber crystal for his lightsaber. This issue was only setting up the beginning and I quite looking forward to seeing exactly how this story pans out and expands Vader's canonical history within the Star Wars universe.
Also I enjoyed the little side story. The humor is a bit dark but well worth the read.
This looks to be a promising series based on the first issue, it starts at the end of Revenge of the Sith from the birth of Vader and fits in well with the story and tone that this set up. The art is much more to my liking than the previous Vader series, it's less digital and has much more substance and style. I look forward to the next issue.
I don't blame the creative team for this one. I just wish Marvel would branch out more and quit rehashing material from the original EU. This issue adds nothing substantial to Vader's story and the lightsaber krystal mythos was already explored in the Ashoka novel. There are so many other characters and eras of the Star Wars universe that Disney and Marvel could explore, but they continue to play it safe with stories set literally within seconds of the movies. As a lifelong SW fan, that bores me.
This new series starts at the moment Vader is made into the man/machine at the end of Episode III. Looks to be good so far. The Emperor starts him out on a quest to get a new light saber to replace the one ObiWan took. The catch is he must take it from a Jedi, the hard way. Interesting story so far.
Great start for this new series which is place between episode 3 and 4, just after the end of three actually and we'll actually live trough the first days of Anakin as Darth Vader!
Wow! This is awesome! Darth Vader #1 (2017) is the start of a new comic run about the Dark Lord of the Sith's early days, taking place in the days or even hours after the end of Revenge of the Sith.
Darth Vader, formally Anakin Skywalker, has awoken to his new life of pain and suffering. His master, Darth Sidious aka Emperor Palpatine saved his life after his terrible defeat at the hands of his former mentor Obi-wan Kenobi. Palpatine gives Vader an ultimatum right off the bat: You can live to serve me, or you can die. Which is just damn cold-blooded.
Vader chooses to embrace the Dark Side and serve the Emperor and the newly-birthed Empire, but before his service can begin in earnest, Sidious presents him with a few tasks, namely in this first issue, finding his own Kyber Crystal so that he can construct his new Sith lightsaber.
Wow, I really love what they're doing with this. This first issue alone reminded me much of the older Star Wars comics by Dark Horse. Comics that were somewhat darker and grittier, especially the ones involving Vader.
The story hooked me from the start, as I've certainly wanted to see more of Darth Vader's early days post-Revenge of the Sith and how he went on to become the guy we see him by the time in A New Hope. A fearsome warrior and servant of the Empire.
Pick this up if you can! I certainly am looking forward to getting Issue #2
This short graphic novel follows Vader's movements after he's joined the Dark Side and lost everything he loved and held sacred.
I put off reading it until the end of my current stack of graphic novels. Wasn't sure what to expect. I love the character.. the whole idea, of Anakin/Vader. The potent intrinsic value demonstrated in his character and midi-chlorian count, shadowed by his impulsive bravado, doubts and fears.. and how sometimes these stumbling blocks are exactly what's called for to bring change about. So I didn't want to be disappointed by some pale, shallow retread of the films. And I wasn't. The plotline, script, and illustrations absorbed my full attention.

I like seeing additional background for stories from the movies, especially the prequels (which were occasionally confusing). This issue does pretty well explaining what happened right after Vader becomes half-man, half-machine, though I'm not keen on him attacking the Emperor . . . at least not until Return of the Jedi. Some of Vader's dialogue seemed a bit un-Vaderish, too, but maybe that's because he's still only recently switched from being Anakin.
Of all the things in this issue, I think my favorite was Mas Amedda standing in front of the Imperial banners and burning all of the Jedi lightsabers. Not that I agree with the Imperial propaganda or anything, but I thought it was a nice editorial touch!
I think I'll return to this series in the future, but it won't be on the top of my comic-reading priority list.
I couldn’t find the whole Volume 1 Trade Paperback like I found the other 3 volumes. So I just chose this #1 issue to stand in place for the whole first volume. The whole arc to my surprise was even better than the previous Marvel released 2 years prior that introduced Dr. Aphra and tied in with the main Star Wars Comic Run. That’s really saying something. Marvel with Soule in the writer’s chair delivered an amazing story of Vader’s initial “coming into his own” as The Sith Lord and Right Hand of Palpatine that by Rogue One and the Original Star Wars depicted this ominous, ruthless monster unnaturally mostly machine with little humanity buried deep down that even his old closest friend as a Force Ghost had given up on him as we saw during Old Ben’s chat with Luke on Dagobah in Jedi. Remarkable and incredible story weaving.
Very promising kick-off for this Darth Vader comic book series!
This starts right after at the very end of Revenge of the Sith where Anakin dies and from the literal flames, Lord Vader rises.
I am excited to see how all of this unfolds within this series.
Lastly, there was a short bonus feature/separate comic at the end of this one. It is a low-production, Sunday Newspaper back page comic type deal, that was humorous and light hearted. Let's just say the Empire is going to be running low on Imperial Officers at the rate Vader is force choking his subordinates... lol.
This Darth Vader series picks up at the very end of "Revenge of the Sith" and begins the story of what happens next. It also includes a more humorous take on the dark Lord of the Sith as a short comic at the end of the main story. All in all, a very good beginning.
Kind of torn if I want to give this a 2 or 2.5. I enjoyed the story but after having endless Star Wars films shoved down my throat over the years, I decided to check out this comic. I didn't want to read about any of the whiny Jedi so I went straight to the bad boy himself, Vader.
It was an okay read, the artwork was basic, and it didn't really captivate me. I won't be reading any further.
This story picks up right after Anakin kills Padma and a bunch of kids to become Vader. Cheery, right? Seriously, though: This series looks like it's going to be awesome! I'm a bit behind, but will soon remedy this.
