A fantasy isekaiadventureabout a man who has to restart life...as an egg?! (And don't miss the manga adaptation, also from Seven Seas.)
In a world full of dangerous monsters, our unnamed protagonist finds himself reborn at the very bottom of the food chain as an immobile, powerless egg. Even just hatching will require leveling up by fighting monsters-the same monsters who'd love to eat him as a snack. But with the help of the mysterious voice in his head, he's determined to grow into the most powerful creature in the world!
Not my type of story. It seems to go for a light hearted comedy JRPG type of story with an idiot MC trying to gain xp and evolve into stronger dragon. For your frame of reference, he starts as a dragon egg (you know the egg monster running around on legs), and quickly gains the skill Just an Idiot and Klutz, and both are well earned. The whole isekai part is only mentioned in the first chapter and never comes up again, which for me is a bad sign. A shame, because I tend to like monster evolution stories like So I'm a Spider, but this is just not the book for me.
I was hoping for something a bit less by the numbers for the genre, but most of this first volume is not one to deviate much. There's some good hints for things to come near the end, with new connections made and cliffhangers, so I have some hope, but for sure not something to go to if you're looking for something fresh.
Don't be fooled by the cute cover. The cuteness doesn't last much past the first portion of the book.
An odd mix of cuteness overload at the start with a sequence of one too-long battle after the other (sprinkled with some slice-of-life about cooking). Too much complaining about choosing a blatantly bad option for evolution with us then not getting a resolution to that conflict by the end of the book.
This is a pretty cute story and I did enjoy it, but not enough to look forward to the next installment. I like the main characters, but the battles and stats, while interesting, are not enough to bring me back for more.
I weirdly enjoyed this one, the fight scenes were well done and there wasn't any of the awkward fanservice-y kind of stuff that typically comes with these kind of novels. The protagonist shows development even within this first volume outside of just the evolution ideas presented, and I'm a fan of the motivation here. This is one that sticks out as interesting to me above a lot that I've been reading, the ideas are solid (even if they've been done before) and there's a great energy about it.
You think an isekai where a dude gets reincarnated as a Dragon would be cool.l it however, is not. Why is it not? well because absolutely nothing happens in this first volume. First things first, it's one of those stat books. what do i mean by that? well imagine if every page you read has this
Level 1 Hp 34/60 Mp 22/30
Attacks: Slash lv 1 Punch lv 2
Skills: Heal lv 1 slap a guy lv 3 (insert 10 more lines)
and this happens at least 10x a chapter. so basically, half of what you're reading is either the main character's stats, or the enemy's stats.
and when it IS talking about the main character and not just stats, every single chapter he's in just talks about him fighting something.
Chapter 1, a worm chapter 2, turtles, chapter 3, another dragon
etc. it's just him in the woods fighting a wild animal OVER AND OVER AND OVER. there's literally no story to be had here. he meets up with a human girl at one point, but then she basically leaves the story after that, despite her being on the cover. also the way he looks on the cover? yeah he only looks like that for like 40 pages. after that he no longer looks like that. So, once again, false advertising.
I just can't believe there was no plot to this book. like... at all. it was like someone looked at "so i'm a spider" or "reincarnated as a slime" and went "I CAN DO THAT!" but they only read the first chapter when they fought something in the forest and based an entire light novel volume off that.
In the few rare times the dragon dude isn't whinging about being a dragon (he lost his previous life memories but someone knows he used to be a human. convenient) the book tells us about how he got food, or foraged in the forest, getting mushrooms, making pots and jerky, etc. oh my god NOTHING HAPPENS.
Like, i don't know whether they THOUGHT they were doing a slice of life or something, but i'm going to let the author in on a little secret. if your goal was to make this a slice of life, you NEED MORE CHARACTERS. just having this guy talk to himself and complain over and over is BORING. he literally doesn't say a line of dialogue to anyone in the entire novel. every single bit of dialogue from him is an internal monologue with the few exceptions of the "Divine voice" aka, the AI sounding voice that tells him about upgrading skills or something.
the only positive i can think about this book was that it read incredibly fast. other than that, that's really all i got. i was bored out of my mind for the most of this. So no, i'm not reading a volume 2 because....THERE'S NO STORY. there's nothing to TELL. and this is coming from a guy who LOVES slice of life. this was just...NOTHING.
The story is pretty good and I do like it does not focus on main characters past to much or keep brining up references or focus on his past as a human. I also like that he is basically going through a internal debate about trying to stay a good person despite it seems the new world is trying to get him to become the evil demon king. While the setting is not that well set up but I do appreciate the focus on the main character and we do get some small tidbits about the world as the main character learns more about the world.
To be fair, I didn't make it to the 5% market, and I tried. I really, really tried, but the author can't keep the physical aspects of his own character straight, and it's a bloody egg. I'm just horrified of what'll happen when there's ACTUAL characters too keep track of.
Typical isekai novel in many aspects, the main idea is borrowed from "Kumo desu ka". The story line is endless battles with different monsters, the idiocy of protagonist probably should amuse readers ... I read first and second volumes and utterly failed to find anything beyond mix of common isekai patterns and lack of key story points.
This was my first light novel manga that wasn't photo panel based and I have to say I was hooked. I did not expect it to be so good but this instantly backed me in. Looking ahead I am actually disappointed that there are only 5 books in this series. Even though this was just the first I wish there were dozens just so it wouldn't come to an end so soon!
Interesting story, with a funny tone that sets it apart from other stories. There's some great comedy beats. I laughed aloud at some parts. But the fights... not for me, way too many and for way too long. I kept reading because I was intrigued but definitely preferred later books in this series.
Cute and fun. A light read. If you're wanting some fluff to enjoy without a lot of plot progression, feel free to enjoy it. But the book is nothing to write home about.
Story - not bad World - somewhat interesting Character - yeah, ok, I can roll with this reincarnation - not necessary, like at all stats - blocky af like why?!?
For a better experience than what these other guys in the reviews are saying. Try reading the web novel. Start off with light novel pub and then at around chapter 246 or so, switch to Chelsea's translations(they started there). All the books so far in English cover only up to about chapter 200, and it gets really good after that point. One reviewer said that it's light hearted, and to that I say it stopped being light hearted at at least chapter 300 out of I think around 1000 and started being pretty serious
I had a conversation with a guy who worked in the bookstore. Basically I struggle reading illustrated mangas because I get distracted. He enlightened me of light novels and spoke highly of this series. He told me to read the first chapter and see how I liked it. Needless to say that after chapter one, I also grabbed the second volume. I loved experiencing this little dragon’s journey!
