The Full Moon wo Sagashite artbook comes as beautiful as the proceeding artbook of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne . It has improved in some ways but also fallen short in others. The art itself, however, is beautiful in both.

What I love about this artbook is that the artist's comments are next to the illustrations as opposed to at the end of the book. I love reading the comments and it's always not very practical when they are located at the back of the book and you have to flip back and forth to actually see the illustration in concern. So a big plus for having the comments in a convenient spot!

Much like the Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne artbook, there is quite the variety in motives, styles and materials used. No illustration seems unnecessary and they're all lovely to look at. This is also strengthened by the fact that not all illustrations are Full Moon related. To my great delight, there are also works from Time Stranger Kyoko, I*O*N, Short-Tempered Melancholic and even a few of Kaikaze Kaitou Jeanne that were not included in its original artbook. This allows for a great collection of her art style and how it's evolved between her series. Not to mention that I was rather disappointed that Time Stranger Kyoko never got its own artbook!

One of the downsides of this artbook is that not all illustrations get the space they deserve. It's about as thick as the previous artbook but it holds more artwork - as a result, some pages display multiple illustrations and they can distract of each other and are sometimes simply too small to fully appreciate. Honestly, I'd have rather spent more money for a thicker book!

This is the artbook for Full Moon wo Sagashite, the art is by Arina Tanemura. It also contains artwork for earlier stories. Her style is clearly shojo anime. Tanemura-sensei has a fair amount of detail in her art and uses all kinds of effects like how she uses the negatives of stickers to create bubbles. There are seams, frills, lace, zippers, patters, detailed hair, and if you notice, there are a lot of barcodes. The colors in her art are between being soft and vibrant most of the time. I really am a fan of how she draws lines. The eyes are drawn really large much of the time though, even among other anime art styles. (It kinda freaked out my art teacher a little bit.) She has an overall detailed, pretty, and cute art-style. A good artbook to have if you don't mind shojo.

First off, despite the title of the book, a good 1/4th of the illustrations inside are not Full Moon; a good number of those are Time Stranger Kyoko related. Still, the illustrations that have been included in this collection are bloody gorgeous, as is the standard for Tanemura’s works. Even if you don’t like her stories, you have to admit her artwork is above the par for her field. Several of her color spreads literally took my breath away at first glimpse.

[REVIEW FOR THE SERIES...]

Full Moon O Sageshite (Vol. 1-7)

Full Moon O Sageshite by Arina Tanemura, was a nice little shōjo manga series. Being a music oriented shōjo manga, this series could work pretty well as a anime (and maybe it already is. Yep, it’s an anime.) Although this manga is aimed at younger audiences it does deal with some heavier themes and some tough topics, but seems to handle them in a mature manner. While this was not my favorite series, it does deserves some recognition for stepping outside the normal shōjo stereotypes and dealing with those heavier elements. So here is the story in a nutshell.

"Twelve-year-old Mitsuki Kouyama is a talented middle school girl who dreams of becoming a singer, but she is afflicted with sarcoma, which is curable only through a surgery that could ruin her vocal cords, and lose her ability to sing. The tumor in her throat already affects her ability to breathe well and sing loudly. Her grandmother also hates music and is completely opposed to Mitsuki's wish to audition. Mitsuki's dreams seem impossible to achieve, until one day she is visited by two shinigami, whom only she could see. The shinigami, Takuto and Meroko, inadvertently tip Mitsuki off that she has only one year left to live.

Mitsuki then realizes she cannot wait any longer to fulfill her dream, so she runs away from home and the shinigami, to try to audition for a singing competition. However, the shinigami stops her before she is able to audition. She moves Takuto, the male shinigami, to agree to a compromise: if Mitsuki promises to go quietly when her year is up, he would help her become a singer, so she could leave the world with no regrets. Takuto gives her the ability to transform into a completely healthy 16-year-old, so that she could meet the age requirements of the audition, and sing without hindrance.

Despite heavy competition, Mitsuki wins over the judges with her excellent voice and her enthusiasm for singing, sealing a contract with Seed Records. To conceal her true identity, she chooses the stage name "Fullmoon"."

The art style has a somewhat nostalgic or retro feel and, given the subject matter, it sometimes is an emotional read. However for a shōjo manga series it was pretty well done and enjoyable, even though shōjo isn’t really my favorite genre. I would recommend to shōjo manga fans, who don’t mind their manga a bit moody, dramatic and emotional. It was a decent read.
