Begin your Witchcraft journey on the Pentacle Path, a wholly unique system of magickal practice that incorporates ritual magick, journey work, and spellcraft to help you fully engage with the elements. Featuring dozens of illustrations and more than fifty rituals, spells, and meditations, Elemental Witchcraft combines esoteric thought with practical activities, allowing you to create an empowering and authentic practice.
Heron Michelle first teaches you Witchcraft's foundations―including the heavy influence of Hermetic philosophy. Then she guides you in understanding the elements and how they correspond to both the Wheel of the Year and the five points of the pentacle that represent your mental, emotional, will, physical, and spiritual bodies. This comprehensive book also explores astrological timing, auras and chakras, elemental tools, sacred space, the Witch’s Jewel of Power, and more. Designed over a decade of coven practice and teaching, this book's system works as a roadmap to your own Great Work.
Foreword by Timothy Roderick, author of A Year and a Day
I’m a Spiritual person, and I was very interested to see what would be in this book in hopes to further develop my craft. I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t learn much from it. I would recommend this to someone who is interested in learning more or historically/scientifically studying spirituality and/or modern witchcraft. She also comes from a very specific lens of a pentacle path.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not much in the way of new information or even creative ways to apply old information. The book is firmly seated in the Wicca tradition of 1960s-70s England, I wish that had been more explicit in the description because it’s not what I am looking for.
This book does have some good points and things to do but is - to me - more Wicca based and would be great for those who identify as Wicca. Can get some points out of it just for the elements.
This is one of those books that you’ll only enjoy if you are on the exact same path. If you’re interested in hermetic Wicca, this is your book. Ceremony and hermetic concepts and history left and right. It’s a bit wordy and felt like one very long research paper for the first half of the book. Overall, if it’s a topic you’d like, you’ll get a lot from it. Otherwise, it’s a lot of skim reading and the basics we’ve all seen before.
Another version of “how to become a witch” replete with the standard personal history (“...always knew I was different”) The reader has to reprise the usual Masonic-Golden Dawn-O.T.O lore, with a jumble of pantheistic, theaistic, hermetic, and neopagan nuggets served in no coherent order. As for the elements--nothing new here, move along.
In a world that is frequently disordered and chaotic, witches of all walks and all levels, from brand new seekers to highly experienced coven leaders, may feel in need of guidance. Pandemics, climate change, political turmoil, and warfare just add to the individual struggles we all are facing, often in isolation. It is easy to feel lost in the labyrinth of loneliness and to dissolve into despair regarding the state of affairs. While wallowing in the ills of society, it is common to feel out of touch with our inner selves, which only causes the despair and loneliness to deepen. In her latest book, Elemental Witchcraft: A Guide to Living a Magickal Life Through the Elements, Heron Michelle offers readers a map, a compass, and a lantern; a way to get back in touch with themselves, find balance with the forces of nature, and ultimately feel more prepared to face the world in which they live with confidence and compassion.
In the first part of her book, the reader is introduced to Heron Michelle, her style of practice, and her basic tenants of personal sovereignty and empowerment while facing life’s challenges. The reader begins the journey with a succinct history of modern witchcraft and a well-researched introduction into Hermetic philosophy and its connection to modern witchcraft before exploring the concept of the Jewel of Divinity and reviewing the sacred texts of Wicca. The traveler makes a brief stop at Heron’s Four Rules of Witchcraft and Divine Love Conditions, before reaching the end of the first leg of the journey, with a lesson on astrology and its relationship to the journey through the Wheel of the Year. The reader now has a firm foundation on which to continue forward toward better self-awareness and understanding.
Continuing down the path of Elemental Witchcraft, the reader is introduced to the elements and elementals, including their relation to witchcraft and the pentacle, their various attributes, and the tools related to each one. The next stop finds the traveler amongst the energy bodies surrounding us and the connection these energy bodies have to the practice of witchcraft, before heading through the process of obtaining tools and creating an altar. Throughout this portion of the journey, Heron provides suggestions and explanations to fit every style and budget. No reader will feel left out due to finances or availability of other resources.
Lastly, at the end of Part Two, the reader prepares the new-found tools and knowledge for the most intense part of the trip: working through the Turning of the Wheel, which is the work to be completed in Part Three.
Entering the final step, Heron leads the reader on a journey through the year, based on the elements and their mysteries. The reader will spend time with the powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, in that order, and connect to the mysteries of both the projective and receptive attributes of each element. Heron provides materials lists as well as meditation scripts for each activity, providing in depth guidance and aiding the reader in finding their own balance within nature and the world around them.
At the conclusion of Elemental Witchcraft: A Guide to Living a Magickal Life Through the Elements, the reader and practitioner will find themselves strengthened in their personal practice and better prepared to meet the challenges of this lifetime. The guidance provided is appropriate for witches of all levels, providing new insight and explanation of older ideas and breathing new life in the Old Religion. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for balance and connection in the often-disconnected world in which we live.
This is an absolutely wonderful book. The author reminds me a lot of Deborah Lipp, so if you enjoy her work, you may like this one, too. I love the way it is organized and how thoughtful the writing is. The practices brought forth are solid in the tradition, too., but they are also modern.
Heron Michelle's new book is a tour-de-force: a book that is highly literate, yet easy (and fun) to read; a book that explains "how-to's" thoroughly and clearly BUT, more important, explains the important "why's" --why things are done in certain ways, and "what" benefits you get out of them.
"Elemental Witchcraft" advocates for a Wiccan-style Witchcraft that offers meaningful self-actualization. When you follow the elemental path that Heron Michelle writes about with the same devotedness that Heron Michelle demonstrates, you will discover opportunities to mine talents, resolve unconscious fears, transform shadow, and thereby become a much more effective and magick-filled Witch -- as well as a more balanced, happier human being.
I know this is true because (disclosure) I have known Heron for many years and seen the results of the path she writes about, both in her and in her students. They all demonstrate the enormous benefits of experience, of practicing a solid path with dedication, through good, through bad, throughout time. This is material that has been thoroughly tested and lived, and you can trust it. Still, despite knowing Heron, I found this book to be bloody brilliant in a way that has been an eye-opening delight.
Heron mines the Western Mystery Tradition for the core concepts that support the Elemental Path of Witchcraft that she presents. She explores Paracelsus, and also Hermetic concepts through original sources, such as the Emerald Tablet, and modern iterations such as the Kybalion (which she acknowledges as modern but finds useful as a model). She has no truck with the glamours of faux history, however: you are told exactly who wrote what, and when they wrote it. Heron consults respected academic scholarship, with copious footnotes and an extensive bibliography. No fluffing or filler here, folks.
Along with historic concepts of the elements, Heron Michelle has also developed unique insights about the qualities of the elements as expressed in our lives. She also has interesting, original insights and opinions about many aspects of this kind of Witchery, some of which made me stop and think through habits and ideas I've had for 20 years. This is why you continue to read books about Witchery when they've been written by experienced authors.
Also, note that this is a comprehensive path of Witchery via working through the elements as initiatory keys; but it's not only about the elements. Heron takes you through the whole circle process and the Wheel of the Year, again as initiatory keys that trigger an inner alchemy.
One of the things I love most about her book is that she presents a Witchery that you can -- if need be -- practice entirely on its own, without external tools, utilizing your breath, body, and mind alone. While she covers all the traditional tools of Wiccan-style Witchery, she details how you can dispense with these and rely on gestures and and postures to cast circle and "summon, stir, and call up" the Elemental Forces and Divine Beings you invoke. This is tremendously freeing and empowering! because it properly centers the Power of the Witch *within* and not in having exactly the right athame or wand or the prettiest chalice. In my own experience, some of the most powerful rituals take place spontaneously and in places away from my altar. Heron's methods teach you how to have these rituals without even the need for a portable altar. YOU BECOME THE ALTAR.
In a market that has a lot of books on Witchcraft, why buy this book? Buy this book because it's very well-written, very thorough, fun, extremely well-documented, and contains a lot of tried & tested material that anyone on just about any path of Witchery can use. Even if you practice folkloric or cunning craft, have you experimented with gestures and postures? Heron Michelle's book will inspire you. If you practice Wiccan-style Witchcraft, do you know why you do certain things? I mean, really know, in depth? Do you know where some of the concepts you take for granted come from? You'll find out through Heron Michelle's book.
I want to shout out to Llewellyn for their excellent design, and to both Heron and MIckie Mueller for lovely charts and illustration; and to Timothy Roderick for his perceptive foreword.
Finally, let this book (and many other recent Llewellyn publications) put to rest the old truism that Llewellyn only publishes ahistorical, made-up fluff. The 80s and 90s were generations ago. There is an excellent team at Llewellyn, and they're putting out high-quality, well-documented, well-edited material by a variety of Witches and Magicians.
Beautifully written book that takes you on a journey of witchcraft answering questions you never knew you had. It is an excellent book for beginners and advanced practitioners. The valuable information of the elements and how to use them is weaved with the perfect ratio of humor and deference. The author explains the history and science of witchcraft while also offering a modern viewpoint. With all the meditations, rituals, exercises, etc; I feel this is a book that one could read many times and always get something new from it. Elemental Witchcraft is my new go-to book in my magical library. Thank you Heron Michelle for this valuable work.
An excellent book, well organized and informative. It made me think and I think it can be used by anyone regardless of their experience. The explanations are clear and there's plenty of exercises. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Elemental Witchcraft is a beautifully structured and deeply immersive guide for anyone seeking to build a meaningful magickal practice. Heron Michelle presents the Pentacle Path in a way that feels both grounded and expansive, blending Hermetic philosophy with practical ritual work.
