Firestick #3

Dead for a Dollar

Rate this book
Johnstone Justice. Making the West wild again.

Keeping the peace in a West Texas town like Buffalo Peak should be easy for a legendary frontiersman like Marshal Elwood "Firestick" McQueen. He’s got his longtime buddies "Beartooth" Skinner and "Moosejaw" Hendricks as his deputies—not to mention the famous rifle that earned him his nickname. But when Firestick learns that their ornery old friend “Rip” Ripley just rode into town, all bets are off. It’s darn near impossible to keep the peace when Rip’s specialty is disturbing it. Firestick finds a decade-old wanted poster for Rip—the reward is one dollar.

Firestick uses it to toss Rip into the clink till he decides to leave town. But Ripley’s still up to his old tricks—he has a new gang of cutthroats coming to Buffalo Peak to steal a king’s ransom in gold in the town bank. Firestick, Beartooth, and Moosejaw become pawns in what just might be the heist of the century. Because Rip’s kill-crazy pals will have to bust him out of jail first...

When one of their old friends from their mountain days rides into town the former mountain men and current lawmen of Buffalo Peak expect to catch up on old times and glory days but they never could have anticipated the hell that rode in with him.

Starts out with the three main characters, the marshal is Elwood “Firestick” McQueen, and his deputies are Malachi “Beartooth” Skinner and Jim “Moosejaw” Hendricks, waiting on a grizzly bear to come out of a canyon. They are saved by another old mountain man they know called Rip. The story slowly continues on with Malachi "Beartooth" Skinner being searched for by two Texas Rangers for the murder of a young girl from a different town. Rip is another story in itself. Not really a fast-paced book until the end. Lots of repeat of the same material over and over again. Almost gave up reading this book but kept at it and finished it.

This was a Christmas present that Started on Jan 5th at the gym and finished it today, at the gym. Even being the third book in the series (I now have to read the first two) the characters felt like they were already know to me early in the book. The story line was pretty cool, three mountain men who came down to join civilization and they become the towns law. From start to finish there was a lot of action making the reading easy.

It's a good read

I enjoyed reading this book. Lots of action. This is probably one of Johnstone's best series or as good as his other series. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Enjoyed

Well, another excellent book with twists and turns. Loved the story and civilization can be a hard and difficult place to live. I wasn’t around, but I did like instant consequences for crime.

24-58. Not the run of the mill western or mountain man story. Loved this series. I borrowed this e-book from the Sacramento Public Library through the Libby app.
