Prior to writing, Trice Hickman's diverse professional career included work in both corporate and non-profit organizations. Currently, she is putting the finishing touches on her second novel, and a third book is already underway. She resides in Washington, D.C., with her husband. "
I enjoyed the first book, but this book took the cake! It made me think about so much!! I especially loved Bernadette’s story arc because she is 50 and hot and found her true love in her later years. These three women, at different ages and stages in their lives go through some STUFF! I loved the real conversations that can come from this book, especially the topic of generational curses. I could totally relate to Bernadette and the bitterness of her mom and how she would constantly disrespect Bernie’s and Tess’s men. I had instant flashbacks to conversations with my own mom whom I eventually had to sever ties with for self preservation purposes. Yeah, this book made me feel ALOT!! I loved it immensely.
Blindsided is about three women who will face the biggest challenge of their lives:
Bernie Gibson is in the best relationship of her life. She is fifty and thrilled to marry the man of her dreams but then she discovers she is pregnant and she isn't sure how Coop will handle this new complication.
Tess Sinclair is engaged to a wonderful successful man who wants to marry her and have children. Tess hasn't told him she has serious fertility issues.
Arizona is married to a man who appears to be the perfect Adonis but the newlyweds have serious intimacy issues. Their happy-ever-after is threatened by past secrets.
From the opening scene for each of these three friends, I knew this was going to be a page-turner. I read it over a couple days and I was intrigued to find out what was going to happen. I really loved that Trice Hickman introduced us to characters in different stages of maturity and also different ages. It was wonderful reading about a woman in her fifties enjoying a hot relationship with a good man.
Of course, the drama was plenty and there were a few times were my eyebrows raised at their actions but that made for a really good read.
I absolutely loved the cover. Loved it. Loved the title. It matched the book perfectly. I truly enjoyed this read. Thank you #Netgalley and #Kensington.
What happens when life gives you lemons? Three friends are blindsided by new challenges in life and dealing with relationship and parenting matters on some level. I was blindsided by all of the nonstop flow of drama. This was a trip!
♡︎Bernadette, has just turned 50 and is in a new, loving relationship when she learns she’s pregnant. ♡︎Tess is recently engaged to Maceo, but has been keeping secrets about her fertility challenges. ♡︎Arizona is newly married to a fine ass stallion of a man. He’s everything she ever wanted, but has a micro penis.
Look, this book had me clutching my pearls and giving some of these characters the side eye. I was super invested in Arizonas storyline because I was wondering if her love for the man she’d been with for 2 years, could outweigh his troubles in the bedroom. I was really disappointed in how things played out in the end, making Chris the bad guy in a sense in the end.
I loved the friendships and strong relationship the ladies built with each other. It was enlightening to see how each woman worked through the bumps in the road, while supporting and encouraging each other.
Of all the characters I liked Tess most because of her directness in conversing with friends, but was pressured to “tone down”, and be more sensitive. She should’ve used that same openness with her man.
In all the relationships, the key missing element was communication. Everyone was hiding vital information or feelings from their partners. You have to have open, honest, direct, respectful communication to make any relationship thrive.
Trice definitely did her thang with this sequel! This was such an entertaining read! The first book was ok but THIS THE ONE!
Three friend girls go through life together. One is literally having a midlife crisis. One is having marital problems & one… well idk about the other one. She is all over the place. I empathize with her with her health issues. It can be A LOT (from experience). But sis made all the wrong choices in her love life. I feel like Tess AND Maceo could both benefit from solo therapy sessions.
Arizona..Arizona.. she was one of God’s strongest soldiers for even agreeing to take on THAT situation. Those scenes were horrific! I don’t wish that on no woman.
This book was so good. I really enjoyed the first book, but this sequel was even better. The camaraderie between the women was so refreshing. The evolution of each of their relationships was a crazy, but entertaining roller coaster. I loved how things worked out for each of them. I did want a little bit more of what came next for Arizona and Tess. I felt like there was some unfinished business there. Other than that, I loved it from beginning to end.
Bernadette, Tess, and Arizona are back with more drama than before. When Bernadette moved to a small town a year ago, she never thought that she would be pregnant and in a relationship. But Bernadette soon finds out that life is not that easy. Tess is happily engaged to a successful restaurateur. But when she finds out she has difficulty conceiving, will her world fall apart? Arizona has married the love of her life. She is trying to help her husband to work out his intimacy issues in the bedroom. But Arizona’s husband has dark issues that she may not be able to solve.
Blindsided is a good follow-up to The Other Side by Trice Hickman. Both books are recommended. Hickman gives us an excellent update on these memorable characters. Just like in the first book, the characters in this story are memorable and relatable. Readers will find that there are some unexpected revelations in this book that makes this a true page-turner. Blindsided is a good book club pick and another winner for Trice Hickman.
Three friends who faces challenges with their lives and relationships. Bernadette who is engaged and becomes pregnant in her early fifty where both her and her fiance never had children. Tess who is also engaged but is afraid to tell her fiance that there is little chance she can have children and he wants children. Arizona who is newly married but is unhappy with their almost non existence sex life. There is a lot of secrets, plot twist and turns in this storyline. I also found it hilarious as to how Arizona always describes her husband's body part. Will these three friends be able to overcome the obstacles in their lives, reveal some long buried secrets and be willing to have a baby so late in life? You will have to read and see for yourself. We meet 3 women Bernadette, Tess and Arizona and through this fast page turner get to find out next what happens in their relationships and romantic lives.
I read this book immediately after finishing the first book in the series "The Other Side". There was a lot of repetition in the writing. Not just because it was a sequel but there was repetition from chapter to chapter. However I still enjoyed the story. I love a story about older women. The relationships that started in the first story developed in this book. There was a lot of character growth. Arizona's story was my favorite, but I liked Bernadette's story. I spent most of the story not liking Tess.
Blindsided is the second book in the series, we catch up with the three friends that are all going through tough times in their relationships. Bernadette, Tess and Arizona are all best friends and have a great deal in common and they are also totally different. Each lady is dealing with their own hard truths about their lives and their relationships. Each lady needs to make a decision about their future and how it will affect them and others.
I enjoyed the second book and I am looking forward to the next book, these three ladies are a trip and are great fit for each other. This was a good storyline and flowed-very well. The things these ladies are going through are very relatable and could happen to any of us in any given time.
I was so excited to read Blindsided, the sequel to The Other Side in the “complicated love” series. This story of friendship, love, and everything that comes along with it was relatable in so many different ways. I loved the storyline and the growth and development of the characters. The book deals with several subject matters such as mental health, the bond of friendship, marital challenges, healing from past hurts, and so much more. It is not only entertaining but also addresses some serious subject matters. It makes for a great book club selection! I love this series and I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
Ok read. Kind of choppy in some areas. Story about 3 cousins and issues they are dealing with in their lives. The book touches on mental illness, but not a lot. Seems like there could be a follow up, not sure if I would read it. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the arc of this book in return for my honest review. Receiving the book in this manner had no bearing on this review.
Book 2 about Tess, Bernadette, and Arizona was a bit repetitious, but a very good read. I enjoyed the small element of suspense, but most of all I enjoyed the bond the 3 ladies shared. And I especially appreciated how loving, caring, and attentive Coop was with Bernadette. This story was so close to real life and I can definitely see each of their stories playing out in my life and the life of my friends. Awesome read!
I really liked this book. This is a new author for me and this won’t be the last time I will read something by her. This is the story of 3 best friends each with their own share of secrets and issues. This author does a great job of trying together issues of infertility, family secrets, love/loss and mental illness. A great story of women’s friendships and how we can support each other.
Wow! This book was amazing! An amazing Part 2! Trice Hickman is truly a amazing storyteller! The story of Bernadette, Tess, and Arizona continued. I honestly couldn't out this book down!
Blindsided was heartfelt and entertaining. I am invested in finding out what’s next for Tess, Bernadette, and Arizona. Trice Hickman is a fantastic author.

Rating as a movie: R for sexual content
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
My thoughts: Page 105 of 308 - This pick up right where the last book left off. Some of the plotlines are drawn out but it's still a good story. 161 - So messy! 269 - I almost made it! I'm too tired to enjoy the end so I'm taking a break. Seems like there's going to be a third book.
This book was more of the same minus the property damage and domestic violence to get revenge when ending a relationship. Something was still missing and I am very frustrated by this series. Not only do I have to wait for the next book I have to look for it. My library has this as a series, Goodreads does not, Amazon only mentions its a follow-up in the description, but it's in the link for the actual book, Kindle always pops up first. So, the next book will be hard to find and there is nothing on the cover to indicate it's a series. At the end of the book the publisher states: "Loved Blindsided? Don't miss Trice Hickman's first Complicated Love novel . . . THE OTHER SIDE" Ugh! If there is one thing I don't like its starting in the middle of a story and they way her books are published it's easy to do. I got several more Trice Hickman books and I knew 2 were part of a series, Dangerous Love, because my library told me, but it wasn't until I went to her site that I discovered many of the standalones I got are part of a series, Unexpected Love. So that's my biggest complaint. I did have a continuity issue, a character was a novelist in the first book but now is a journalist, I guess it helps the polt but I remember. This is a good series if you like drama. Bonus the author would love to join your book club discussion.
Recommend to others?: Yes. But get your checklist ready.
When I picked up Blindsided as part of my color cover challenge for April I had no idea it was part of a Duology. I instantly checked out the ebook for the first part, and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
MY THOUGHTS💭: reading this duology felt like I was in the group chat with my girls😂💖! The mess was messy and the tea was top tier. Even though this book is categorized as a romance (which there is romance👀 y’all) I felt the strongest connection was the sisterhood that was formed between these three women and self love discovered along the way.
Both books follow the start, development, and continuation of the friendships between three women who share a birthday: Bernadette 50, Tess 40, and Arizona May 30. While Bernadette and Tess are cousins, I thought Hickman perfectly displayed that family and friend balance, when sometimes even your blood needs to be checked. We don’t just ride along with these women through their individual self discoveries and successes, we also ride through scamming fiancés, cheating boyfriends, new loves, unexpected journeys, and REAL TALKS. And the ride can get rough!
As someone who is 30 now but surrounds herself with women from all age groups I loved that this book showcased love, hurt, and growth at different stages of life. Trice Hickman is must read for me.
It was great to catch up with the ladies in this sequel to The Other Side. I'd been anticipating this book and it did not disappoint me. I enjoyed seeing the evolution of each woman and Blindsided was the perfect title because I felt like I had been too. LOL! I won't give away any spoilers, but it was surprising to see the current developments in their lives since the last book, especially Bernadette's. Whew Chile!! She's going to need a lot of prayer the next few years. But I know with Coop by her side she'll be fine. And Lawd...Arizona and her situation with Chris. Those scenes were the most hilarious to me though I know they weren't for Arizona. Tess was my favorite from the last book but she was the most disappointing because I didn't feel like she'd grown much. I know her fertility issues weighed on her so I'll give her that but she was doing way too much. Even with her level of success as a NYT Bestselling Author, the maturity was lacking. But, she's still my girl and I'm still rooting for her. Can we talk about the restaurants? I know they were fictional but my mouth was watering. From Sue's to the Magnolia Room and Fried Green Tomatoes. I just loved the southern feel of Bourbon. Great book!
Blindsided by Trice Hickman is book two in her Complicated Love series, follow-up to The Other Side.
Cousins Bernadette and Tess and their friend, Arizona, share a birthday, each a decade older than the next, respectively. The ladies share a great friendship and commonality in that they’re involved in a complicated personal relationship.
Trice Hickman continues her Complicated Love series with this second successful installment. Though part of a series, it reads well as a standalone. The story is revealed through the alternating viewpoints of each of the ladies. This sometimes tricky technique is handled smoothly with appropriate chapter headers. We learn more about each lead character, more to love or hate. There are more unexpected plot twists. I rate Blindsided5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who enjoys good dramatic and multicultural interest fiction.
My thanks to Kensington Books, Dafina, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
I wish I had known that Blindsided by Trice Hickman was part of a series before I started reading it. Not sure how I missed that one.
While it was good, my not having read the first book, had me feeling like I was missing something while I was reading. It didn't prevent me from reading or even enjoying the story being told but gave me that little nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I wasn't getting the full picture. I normally would have put it down, but there was something about Bernie, Tess, and Arizona and their stories that made me continue.
They felt real to me. Their stories, triumphs, their hardships, and challenges were just so very real and that made me keep turning the page. These women could have been me and my friends at different stages and ages of our lives. it just felt so raw and real that I related to the story, despite not having read the first book.
Thank you to the author, Kensington Books and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This quick and satisfying read follows the lives of three close friends who each face career and relationship challenges. I particularly loved that the friends were each aged a decade apart and each had their issues and learned from one another - and that the oldest woman was in a hot relationship with a good man. The chapters are told in alternate POVs of the three women, and it's very easy to dive in and become invested in the lives of these women. Lots of drama - which the deep friendship and love between the women work through. I honestly did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did, which I realize is a backhanded compliment - but I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys character-driven stories with depth.
This book was very detailed and nail bitting, having you go from chapter to chapter wondering what was next! I really enjoyed the view from 3 different characters all intertwined together. I gave it 4 stars because i did not like the ending. Yes, im glad Coop isn't going to jail, but after that revelation, the book became a lifetime movie. Antwan, out of respect for Maceo, should not have been at the wedding. I really thought it was going to lead us into the new paths that Tess and Arizona were taking and the birth of Bermadette's babies. But it just dropped after they married and lived happily ever after.
Story about three women, Bernadette, Tess, and Arizona, that are all blindsided by events that will change the course of their lives. In the beginning the story was a little choppy and I wasn't sure where it was going but it definitely picked up and I found myself invested in the outcome of their individual stories. The book has a vibe of girlfriends with a more serious drama. I definitely appreciate the growth of each of these ladies throughout the book.
Trigger warning of mental illness.
Thanks for Netgalley and Kensington Books for the e-galley in exchange for my review.
All is going well in life, but you don't see it coming and then you've been hit blindside. Talking it out with your girlfriends you know you'll get that support and encouragement, but how you receive it is all up to you.
I found the story to be more character driven with different POVs. I didn't have any feelings toward any of the characters. The story was a fast read, but did slow down in some places and at times too descriptive on material things.
Blindsided touches on several of life's issues such as infertility, mental illness, domestic abuse and trust.
