Eleanor Wilde Mystery #4

Hypnosis Is for Hacks

Rate this book
Eleanor Wilde has traded a career as a sham medium for a (relatively) respectable life in a small English town, providing the locals with herbal remedies and elixirs. But on a trip to the seaside town of Brighton, her past comes calling—and so does a killer . . .

Though Eleanor is delighted that her brother, Liam, is visiting her in England, she must reluctantly agree that her quiet village lacks something when it comes to sightseeing—namely: sights. True, there’s nearby Castle Hartford, belonging to the family of Ellie’s boyfriend, Nicholas. But even Nicholas’s mother is eager to ditch sleepy, sweltering Sussex for a vacation in Brighton, taking Ellie and a relieved Liam with her. Yet hopes of a breezy seaside holiday quickly turn stormy, in every sense . . .

The ominous change in weather is accompanied by the reappearance of Ellie’s former partner-in-crime, Armand Lamont. Back when Ellie earned a living as a phony medium, Armand’s hypnosis skills helped the pair persuade many gullible marks to hand over their savings. Ellie assumes that Armand has resurfaced with blackmail in mind, but before she can figure out his angle, she and Liam witness a man being pushed from a boat by two shadowy figures who then vanish into midair.

Phantoms? Demons? Though Ellie doesn’t believe in either, the recovered body is real enough, as is a string of thefts plaguing their luxury hotel. Ellie has a theory, and it requires inviting Nicholas to join them under a fake identity. Their evolving relationship is as complex as this case, and Ellie’s authentic supernatural abilities too are developing in surprising ways. But as for whether the outcome will be good or bad, not even her witchy powers can say . . .

Eleanor Wilde is a sham medium, a fraud who’s used her dramatic talents and the trust of her clients to bilk them. But lately things have changed; she has received intelligence from the great beyond, specifically from her deceased sister. As a businesswoman that now resides in a small town in the UK and doesn’t want her neighbors to hate her, she’s shifted most of her business to herbal cures and such. As it happens, this doesn’t keep all hell from busting loose.

My thanks go to Kensington Books and Net Galley for the review copy. This book is for sale now.

Eleanor--you may call her Ellie—is the protagonist in a satirical cozy mystery series, and this is the fourth. I read and reviewed the first two, but somehow missed out on the third. The first two took place in a tiny village where the ruling family lives in an honest-to-goodness castle. She went there, in the first in the series, to conduct a bogus séance, but instead fell in love with Nicholas, heir to the estate. Now the castle is in need of serious repairs. It’s summer, and the castle is hot enough to be uninhabitable, and so Ellie accompanies the elderly Vivian, matriarch of the castle, to the seaside. Her brother Liam, who is visiting, joins them. And once there, all sorts of things go wrong. We have a menacing, possessed doll that reappears in or near Ellie’s room, no matter what she does to destroy it, and a sinister figure from Ellie’s checkered past shows up as well. And of course, of course, of course, Ellie witnesses a murder shortly after arriving, but nobody will believe her.

I came away of two minds about this particular installment. The thing I’ve appreciated most about this series is that Berry’s writing is hilarious, and whenever an obvious plot device is utilized, it’s done in such an over-the-top manner that we can imagine the author winking and guffawing.
Nothing here is to be taken seriously. In the past there’s been very little character development, and I was okay with that, because I wasn’t looking for great literature; I was looking for a laugh.

Here I find some changes. There’s less humor, although two particular bits, one involving lobsters and another involving, per the title, hypnosis, made me snicker. But I also find more character development. Realistically speaking, a series can’t last long if there’s no character development, and so I’m pleased to see Berry adding a bit of depth, but at the same time, what I really want is to laugh out loud. We live in tense times, and there’s a growing body of evidence that we live longer if we laugh. A silly, escapist novel that lets us forget current events entirely for a brief while, forget our own troubles, whatever they may be, and sit back and howl at what our clever author has cooked up, is worth more than many can imagine.

Nonetheless, this story is better by far than most of what’s out there within the humor genre, and I recommend it to you. Now…where’s that cat?

I love this series. Hypnosis Is For Hacks makes me love it even more. Some might say that Eleanor is getting what’s coming to her when she unexpectedly runs into her former partner in crime, Armand. She is angry, frightened, and a little ticked off, but most of all, she is worried. When she witnesses a murder that no one believes happened, she finds herself at the mercy of Armand, not one, but two ghosts, and her visiting brother. It isn’t a position she ever wanted to be in, and she is going to do her best not to let it ruin her life while tracking down a killer and possibly keep her loved ones from getting ripped off by her fraud ex-partner.

Eleanor doesn’t like hypnosis; she has seen far too many bad things that come from it. Mainly when used by her former partner. But no matter how much she suspects he is back in her life to destroy it, she doesn’t think he is a killer. When a man’s body washed up on the shore, everyone talks about it being a tragic accident, but she knows it was murder ad sets out to prove that she is right. The hotel may be haunted, but she has her own ghost to help her figure out the puzzle, or at least when they feel like helping. All of the suspects are staying at the luxury hotel that she, her brother, and Nicholas’ mother is vacationing at, so you would think it would be easy to keep track of them, but… that’s not how it works when she has to keep watch over her brother and her ex-partner to keep them out of trouble and a killer’s sights.

The suspect pool isn’t too large, and each has a secret or an outright motive, but it doesn’t seem possible that any of them could have committed the crime. The evidence is slim but not invisible. There are a few red herrings but not so many that they overwhelm the story. I liked the hypnosis aspect, mainly when used on Eleanor. The hotel sounds lovely if a bit old-fashioned, which is okay with me because I like things, and places that are old or traditional. There is quite a bit of the paranormal theme running through this story, and that I really enjoyed. I like to think that Eleanor is evolving into a real witch and not just a con artist. Other characters are changing as well, and we get to meet Eleanor’s brother in eth flesh, so to speak. I hope he continues to make appearances in future installments. Armand is a nice character that gives us a better insight into Eleanor’s old life and allows us to see how much she has changed from the first book.

Hypnosis Is For Hacks keeps the reader engaged and entertained. The relationship dynamics are enjoyable and show growth. The hotel setting takes us out of the castle and Eleanor’s tiny house and places the reader into a world of the paranormal, luxury, and co-worker politics. For me, the killer’s identity was apparent, but that is part of what made this book so enjoyable. Knowing I was right was fun but finding out the killer’s motive was the intrigue I look for in any cozy. I am happy to recommend this book to all readers.

All right, I'm inconsistent. After criticizing a few books recently for too much woo-woo, I fell in love with this one, and plan to read some of the earlier ones in the series. Eleanor, now an innocent herbalist, is more than ready to forget her past as a phony medium, until her old partner appears in Brighton, where she's vacationing with her visiting American brother and the mother of her wealthy, workaholic beau. Eleanor distrusts her ex-partner and his schemes, and Nick is worried about his mother, which leads to him appearing in disguise as a gay doctor who's attracted to Eleanor's brother. But the hotel where they're staying is said to be haunted, and certainly strange things are happening there. Everyone is under suspicion, but even Eleanor is blindsided by the real guilty party.

Hypnosis Is for Hacks is the 4th book in the Eleanor Wilde Mystery series.

Eleanor Wilde is an American bogus psychic who has set herself up as the local town witch under the guise of Eleanor's Cleansing Service in a quaint English village in Sussex. She is on holiday in Brighton with her brother Liam, boyfriend Nicholas Hartford III, and his mum. Hoping to escape the stifling heat of the Sussex country hence the trip to breezy Brighton, Ellie spots a former partner in crime, Armand Lamont at their hotel. Liam and Ellie also see someone go overboard on a boat in choppy seas. As other strange or nefarious deeds take place, fingers are soon being pointed...

Hypnosis Is for Hacks was my 2nd in this series. Although it was book four, I had no difficulties keeping up with characters and events and it worked for me as an individual story. Protagonist Ellie is a great character who I like immensely; she is fiery and has a knack for dramatising her witchy persona, instilling collywobbles or relief within her audience.

There was no shortage of comedy or engaging chapters so I was thoroughly invested in finding out what would happen next. The great cast of characters helped to zhoosh up this mystic cozy. Tamara Berry really impresses me with her fluid writing; the details of the plot are very well-executed, and the story is amusing and easy to follow. I was kept guessing almost until the end and really enjoyed this ghostly paranormal adventure. I am looking forward to reading book 5, as well as the others from the series. If you adore a great cozy mystery, don't miss out on Hypnosis Is for Hacks!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Eleanor is one of my favorite endearing protagnist. This is the fourth installment in the Eleanor Wilde Mystery Series and I have loved the entire series. She has turned her life around after working as a fake medium. Now in England she is working prescribing elixers and herbal remedies. Trying to redeem herself with honest work she has left her former life behind.

Eleanor is on a trip with her boyfriend and his Mother to Brighton when her Brother arrives for a visit. She had hoped for a relaxing romantic coastal vacation but soon her former partner in crime appears and may have nefarious reasons for contacting her. In addition to her concerns she and her Brother witness a horrendous crime . After the crime occurs several odd happenings take place that may be a result of spirits or pranks by her former partner .

This was such a fun read with humor, mystery and a well crafted interesting sleuth. I like Eleanor as a person that does not suffer fools and stands up for herself. She is decent at her core and really trying to lead a honest life with her change in profession. She has a lot of growth as a person in each book. This was a entertainng addition to the series. I look forward to the next in series.

This series is very different from anything else I've read. The relationships between Eleanor, Nicholas and Nicholas's mother constantly keep me guessing. That being said, I really enjoy these books. They keep me on my toes and I never know what to expect with Eleanor. I read this book in a day. It was that much fun and had so much going on. Very entertaining!

"Hypnosis Is for Hacks" by Tamara Berry is a delightful addition to a charmingly quirky series that effortlessly blends magic, romance, and mystery. Set in a quaint English village, the novel follows Eleanor Wilde, a former sham medium with latent supernatural gifts, as she navigates her new life filled with herbal remedies, elixirs, and unexpected intrigue.

The author's writing is smart, witty, and unpredictable, keeping readers engaged from the very beginning. Berry masterfully weaves a narrative that combines the allure of a cozy mystery with elements of magic and romance, creating a unique and captivating reading experience. The decision to place Eleanor in an English village adds an extra layer of charm to the story, and the introduction of her brother, Liam, brings familial dynamics into play.

The seaside setting in Brighton adds a refreshing twist to the plot, as Ellie's past resurfaces along with a killer. The reappearance of her former partner-in-crime, Armand Lamont, adds an intriguing layer of mystery and suspense. The sudden change in weather and the discovery of a body lead to a series of events that keep the reader guessing until the very end.

The character development is noteworthy, especially the evolving relationship between Ellie and her boyfriend, Nicholas. The complexity of their relationship adds depth to the narrative, making it more than just a typical cozy mystery. Ellie's genuine supernatural abilities, which are developing in surprising ways, add an extra layer of intrigue to the storyline.

The author's ability to balance the supernatural elements with a compelling mystery is commendable. The inclusion of a fake identity and the string of thefts in the luxury hotel contribute to the complexity of the case. The suspenseful moments and unexpected twists keep the reader eagerly turning the pages.

"Hypnosis Is for Hacks" is a highly enjoyable read that successfully combines humor, romance, and mystery. Tamara Berry's skillful storytelling and well-crafted characters make this novel a standout in the cozy mystery genre. With its clever plot and engaging writing style, "Hypnosis Is for Hacks" earns a solid four stars, providing readers with a thoroughly entertaining and immersive experience.

I have to say I didn’t enjoy this one as much S the first three books. It felt disjointed and rushed, the story of off somehow and I never really got into it. Elenor’s quirkiness in the village somehow lost its charm in this book 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ the romance was pretty non existent but there is a happy ending, especially since this is the final book in the series.

Pacing was off for me, and I finally rushed through the solution so I still don't understand a few things. However, it was a splendid way to end the series, and final pages are a definite treat. The door is left open for new adventures but the author has said she has no plans for me so I'm glad she ended it on a satisfying note.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Hypnosis Is for Hacks was my introduction to the Eleanor Wilde series. The description was very appealing, as well as the book cover. I was quite sure that I would enjoy the book, and I was not disappointed. Although I feel it's best to have read the previous books, I was pulled quickly into the story. Eleanor, the main character, is far from perfect, but it makes the book so much more interesting. Her brother, Liam, adds a bit of comic relief, which was welcome. It was interesting how Armand's presence was woven into the story, adding more mystery and danger. There were some nice twists along the way, it took me a while to figure out certain things. The conclusion was very satisfying, and I definitely want to read other books by Tamara Berry.

I love this series! I usually listen to a lot of books on audio but this one was not available. I sent a message to the author on Facebook to ask if it would be on audio and she got back to me right away! Tamara Berry was so nice and gracious! It won't be available on audio, but that's okay. I ended up reading the book in one day. I can't wait for her next book in the series to come out!

Madame Eleanor was a fake. She would come to your house and eliminate whatever was haunting you, or remove the evil spirits or whatever, for a price. She would insure you didn’t rummage through the things she brought to the house or investigate her midnight wanderings, unless you wanted to see the cameras, noise makers, etc, she would install and manipulate as she needed.

All that changed when the sister, whose medical treatment Eleanor had been paying for with her work as a medium, died and began talking to her for real. As if that wasn’t enough, another medium, one Eleanor also believed to be a fake, died and now she talks to Eleanor, too. Add that to Eleanor’s decision to “go straight”, settling in a small English village and making herbal remedies and you have the current Madame Eleanor. She still wears costumes reminiscent of a witch, lots of black, and she still gets involved in solving murders, but she will be the first one to tell you it’s because she is an astute observer, nothing more.

All of that is threatened when she accompanies her boyfriend’s mother to Brighton beach to get away while their castle (did I mention they are extremely wealthy?) is having the heating and air conditioning upgraded. Almost the moment she walks into the hotel she is greeted by a former partner from her less than above board days, Armand. When she talks to him she becomes convinced Armand is there to fleece her friends and, as an added bonus, fill them in on all her former activities. They know much of Eleanor’s past, but she has kept the more lurid parts from them as she is afraid they would reject her if they knew.

Her brother, Will is also in England on a visit and has accompanied Eleanor on this trip. As she and Will are walking on the beach the first evening they see a man go overboard in rough seas. Troubling as that is, it’s even more troubling when they try to describe the two shadow figures who appear to be throwing him overboard and who disappear into thin air when he goes over the side.

That’s just the beginning of strange happenings at the hotel, and Eleanor is convinced Armand is somehow at the bottom of things. Jewels are stolen from safes, sometimes with the owner in the room. The same report is given in each case, there were two shadow figures in the room who just disappeared when the occupant was awakened by a noise like the crackling of a fire. Eleanor knows Armand, who is an accomplished hypnotist, uses noise as a way of lulling the brain, and she is convinced this is another one of his tricks.

She can’t prove the man who went overboard and drowned was murdered, and the police tend not to take her information seriously. However, when another of their suspects dies in his hotel room, it’s certain there is a murder to solve. Eleanor is determined to solve the case, although the police detective in charge is not interested in her assistance. This determination comes both from having seen the first murder and some strange happenings that keep pulling her into the case. Things like the antique porcelain doll that keeps reappearing in her room, even after Eleanor or Will throw it down the trash bin, toss it in the ocean, and crush it into dust.

Then there are Eleanor’s two cats, Frankie and Beast. Eleanor learned during her last case it wasn’t good for her to travel without these two, so she sneaked them into the hotel. The only problem now is that Beast keeps getting out of her room somehow, and appearing unexpectedly, at least once bringing the doll with him.

This book is both fun and a well-plotted mystery with several twists and turns that will keep the reader on their toes and entertained throughout. There are secondary storylines such as Eleanor’s relationship with her boyfriend, the extent to which she hears from her two spirit companions, and her reasons for giving up the less savory aspects of her life, which have been ongoing from the first book in the series. These are referred to, as are some of her previous work, without explanation. A reader coming to this book as the first one in the series might find references that leave them a bit confused, although they do not affect the outcome of the mystery itself. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys series to begin with the first book in the series and read them in order.

My thanks to Kensington Books for providing me an advanced copy for this review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

*I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

This is the fourth installment in the Eleanor Wilde Mystery Series and my first one to read of said series. Eleanore "Ellie" Wilde crosses the pond to go to England and leave behind a life as a scam artist. When her brother Liam comes to visit, she wants to make his visit fun and they go to Brighton. When they observe what seems like a murder, they start to question what they saw. Especially when Ellie's old partner in crime, Armand Lamont, also pops up in Brighton. What does all of this mean?

As this was my first one to read of this series I felt a little lost. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the previous installments, more would have been clear. What bothered me was that it is written in present tense when most books I read are written in past tense. But that is just how I feel. I rather read past tense books, so I will not have this influence my judging of the book, but I do feel the need to mention it as there are more people like me.

The characters are fun and likeable, but again, I didn't quite catch on who was who at the beginning, so I would say it would be better to read the other books first. Nonetheless the murder mystery itself was great! I was so betting on the wrong horse!!! I never expected the killer to be that person! I was entertained and guessing up to the last minute!

I was doubting between 3 or 4 stars, but I went with 4 because of the storyline. I really enjoyed that. I do want to read the previous installments and then reread this one someday so it will all make more sense. But if you are familiar with the series, you will certainly like this new installment with a very good mystery!

A couple is walking along a beach during an extremely stormy night and witnesses two men fighting and throwing a third man off the boat. Thus begins an investigation by a very renowned psychic and medium!

Eleanor is a gifted psychic with a group of ghosts who help her unravel the mysteries she seems to keep getting. She is surrounded by a group of never-do-wells, cats, and an ugly doll named Brunhilde. She also has a highly respected investigator named Armond Lemont who continues to question her investigation and appears more of a hindrance than a help.

She struggles through the investigation with Armond questioning every assumption. Her apparitions continue to guide and help her through the investigation. She has a suitor who is hoping to win her heart. He is Nicholas Hartford III. Even his name evokes status and wealth. His mother will have to expire before this becomes a reality though!

I found it very difficult at times to believe the narrative. Who can walk on a beach during a stormy night and witness a crime on the water in the dark?

The story was a fun rollick, however, and featured some interesting concepts and characters. It is a romp into the shadowy world of make believe. 3.5 stars

We received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are his honest opinions.

As expected, this fourth installment of the Eleanor Wilde mystery series did not disappoint! This is absolutely a cozy mystery--but yet it is a welcome departure from the tried-and-true formula that makes this sub-genre tiresome. Eleanor, our leading lady, is unlike the typical sweet and lovable "Mary Sues" of the cozy mystery scene. She's a wise-cracking charlatan who cons people into believing she speaks to dead people. Hey, sometimes you have to go to extremes to make a buck these days! In her defense, she resorted to this unsavory line of work to pay for her dying sister's medical bills, so she can't be all that bad. To be honest, I rather prefer a protagonist with some real flaws instead of the cliched "flaws" attached to female characters to make them "relatable," such being a perennial klutz or a carb-fanatic. Is this really the only way women can relate with other women? Strange. Either way, I digress. Eleanor is a fantastic protagonist with some really fun sidekicks including magical cats (aka familiars) and some ghostly spirit guides. In this mystery, she's vacationing at a posh hotel in a quaint coastal English village. Ahh...such bliss. The mystery begins when she and her brother witness a man being pushed off a boat by two shadowy perpetrators. Adding to the mystery, there's a jewel thief afoot! Could the two crimes be connected? Will the salty head detective ever take her seriously? Could all of these wrongdoings be tied to Eleanor's ex partner-in-crime and current blackmailer? You'll have to read the book to find out!

Summer in Sussex shouldn't be this hot so Eleanor Wilde, former fake medium from across the Pond (now sort of a local witch) is very glad to escape to Brighton for a breath of cool seaside air. Her brother, Liam, is visiting and her boyfriend's mother wants to take them to a posh hotel. She's very rich and the castle has workers doing things to the AC and such. So off they go to one of England's favorite holiday getaway spots. No sooner have they arrived when Eleanor's former partner-in-con, Armand, makes an appearance. Being a woman with a not very honest past as a fake medium with a talent for separating gullible people from their money, Eleanor suspects that Armand might be thinking of a bit of blackmail directed at her. Does he think that she is running a con on her boyfriend, Nicholas and his family?
If that isn't complicated enough, while out for a stroll in the evening, Eleanor witnesses a person being thrown overboard by what appear to be two men. Problem is they go poof, into thin air. The body is real but not much else seems to be. Is it in any way connected to a string of robberies in their hotel and might Armand have something to do with any of it? I'm not saying any more for fear of spoilers.
The combination of a strong, engaging female character (Eleanor), a top notch mystery, lovely setting, humor and more than a little bit of ghostly paranormal assistance makes for a series that became one of my favorites with the first book.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Former fake psychic and now real ghost communicator Ellie, gets talked into joining her boyfriend’s mother, Vivian, at a luxury Brighton hotel. Ellie’s brother tags along but the creep factor jumps up when a scary doll refuses to be dispatched. No matter how many times or in what way Ellie tries to get rid of it, it seems to return to haunt her. It is a minor irritant compared to what else shows up to haunt her. It is her former mentor and partner, Armand, and she is convinced he is part of the very spooky thefts and murder that have occurred.

Ellie is nervous because she knows all his tricks and how very good he is. He also holds all the deepest darkest secrets of her nefarious past for which she is trying to compensate. She allows Vivian and Liam to convince her to let Armand hypnotize her. . No one is quite prepared for the events that follow, most of all Ellie. Things are going to get even weirder and more robberies and one further murder, Ellie is uncertain who to trust. But it is clear someone is trying to tell her something. Can she figure it out before it turns deadly?

I have enjoyed the previous books of the series but I have not loved them. This one, I loved. I enjoyed the setting and the sleight of hand and all the pieces that fit together but then didn’t. It was a fun read that kept me guessing. Five purrs and two paws up.

I totally enjoy the main character, Eleanor Wilde, and this story in the series was particularly entertaining. The mystery is complicated with multiple misdirection and a major and unexpected switch. There is some paranormal (the fire alarm was an interesting touch) but it mainly serves as a distraction, like chaff in an air fight. The explanations for events and murders are very unique and unexpected, especially how Ellie figures it all out.

Ellie is a very interesting character and it is fun to see her react to life changes and her insights into people’s motivations, including a realistic look at her own. Her friends and family are great cohorts in this adventure. The ending was very sweet and a nice wrap-up. Hopefully not too much as I would love to follow Ellie & co. on further adventures.
“You know more about this case than you are letting on, Ms. Wilde. I want to know how. And why.”
I can already tell I’m not going to enjoy this next part. Mostly because although the how is easy… the why is much more difficult to pinpoint.
Murder and death just have a way of following me around. Whether I’m the cause or the effect, however, her guess is as good as mine.

Hypnosis Is for Hacks by Tamara Berry is the 4th book in Eleanor Wilde Mystery series, and another unique book that I really enjoyed. I loved this series, sometimes I forget how much, until I start reading a new book. Eleanor, Ellie, Wilde is excited to have her brother Liam visit her in England. Nicholas has arranged for his mother, to stay on the beach while the castle is getting work done, and she invites Ellie and Liam along. Nicholas is Eleanor's boyfriend who is away on business. When Ellie's fellow con man turns up, she knows he's up to something. Plus there are a lot of thief's going on at the hotel. Wow, this book was so good, and I found it to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. There are a lot of twists and turns that kept me reading. There is a wonderful mixture of mystery, humor, and romance for a well-balanced unique story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. This book can be read as a standalone, but I strongly encourage you to read them in order. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book/series.

Hypnosis is for Hacks by Tamara Berry is the fourth book in this series that follows former fake medium Ellie Wilde. Ellie used to pretend to remove ghosts and deal with the dead to trick people out of their money with her hypnotist partner Armand. After her sister dies and she moves to England she starts to be able to communicate with her sister's spirit and see visions of events. She ends up becoming a valued member of the village, falling in love and helping solve crimes.
In this installment Ellie travels with her brother Liam and her boyfriend's mother Vivian to the Brighton for some summer fun. Shortly after arriving she runs into her former partner Armand, witnesses a jewel robbery and a potential murder and gets stalked by a creepy doll. She must use her street smarts and her evolving supernatural abilities to get to the bottom of what's going on in this historic hotel.
There's zanniness, romance, secret identities and more, that keeps you on your toes and turning the pages. A very fun and interesting cozy!

Hypnosis Is for Hacks by Tamara Berry is the fourth book in Eleanor Wilde Mystery series.

This has become one of my favorite series from book one and her books always put a smile on my face.

They are so charmingly quirky, full of mischief, fun and laughter, interspersed with unconventional characters and situations with a bit of romance.

Ellie is one of the sweetest, funniest, kindest and most likable heroine that I have come across in a long time.
I simply adore how she reveals tricks of trade and simplifies everything while downplaying her powers.

I liked the setting, it gave it a proper spooky vibe even in summer, and a grand old hotel was a perfect place for all the action.
There were just enough possible suspects to make things interesting but not confusing, with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep readers engrossed.
Highly recommended. I can't wait for the next book.

Eleanore Wilde crossed the pond and left behind a life as a scam artist. As she is building a new and respectable life in England, her brother comes to visit. To make his visit fun, she takes him to Brighton, where she sees her ex partner in crime. But it’s when she and her brother see a man pushed off a boat to his death that they question what they really saw.

Eleanor has a plan to try and figure it out, but it requires her boyfriend Nicolas’ help. Will Eleanor’s abilities and plan come to the rescue or will she be scammed this time around?

No one loves a con. They like an ex con even less. However, Eleanor’s powers make her the real deal and a very likable character, especially if you like snark and/or are an anglophile. This series is a hoot and I adore each and every book that has been published to date.

The last person Ellie wants to see again is Armand especially not while she's on vacation in Brighton with her brother Liam, her love interest Nicholas, and his mother (whose castle is being renovated- a castle!). Armand, see, was her partner in crime back when she was posing as a psychic and ripping people off. Yes, her loved ones know what she did but not all of it. Turns out, Armand isn't as much of problem as the fact that she sees a man pushed overboard from a boat and no one believes her. Then more bad things happen at the hotel and fingers start to point. This is a fun cozy series with a terrific protagonist in Ellie, an American in the UK who started out grifting and now is doing her best to be legit. There's a bit of paranormal, a bit of romance, a lot of humor. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. One of my favorite series.

Eleanor Wilde is such an unusual heroine in the world of cozy mysteries as she's a (sort of) reformed con woman and she's a woman with a past.
Her dry humour, her strength make her one of my fav character in the cozy world as she's able to use her past experiences to investigate and trying to keep on living as she choose.
This is another excellent addition to this beloved series, I had to remind me to sleep because I wanted to know what was going to happen.
People from the past, events that could be related to paranormal or not, a lot of humour.
I think this is the best instalment so far and I hope there's going to be a lot of other novels as I want to know what will happen in the future.
The mystery is solid and I was surprised by the twists and the solution.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Eleanor (Ellie) Wilde has settled down in a quaint English village and gave up her life as a sham psychic medium. She's excited that her brother, Liam, has come for a visit. But when they leave Sussex with her boyfriend's mother to go to seaside, Brighton, trouble soon finds them. Ellie and Liam witness a murder and someone from Ellie's past shows up. Can Ellie get to the bottom of things without losing everything she now holds dear?

I've really enjoyed this series and this book is no exception. This enchanting and fun read was well-written with wonderful characters. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and kept hooked until the end. The mystery will certainly keep you on your toes and guessing throughout. I love how much Ellie has grown with each book and am very eager for more from this series. I highly recommend both book and series which I believe is best read in order.
