Meet Your Maker

“A mind-bending new series by the master of technothrillers…Anyone that says there isn’t a truly unique story anymore hasn’t read Matthew Mather’s Delta Devlin novels.”--Nicholas Sansbury Smith, New York Times bestselling author of Sons of War and the Hell Divers series

In this future, reality is what you make it. In the Czar's Suite of Kiev's five-star Persian Palace, police discover a body jammed impossibly deep in a narrow ventilation duct. Security cameras reveal that no one else entered the super-secure room. An ocean away, Interpol rookie Delta Devlin witnesses an attempted assassination, but the bullet meant for the Ukrainian prime minister hits her father instead, lodging next to his heart. Investigations reveal that ex-KGB operator Yuri Korshunov smuggled a 3D-printed plastic gun into the UN Building. As her father falls into a mysterious coma, Devlin tracks down infamous tech wunderkind Lenny Bondar at the Maker Faire, a global gathering of hackers. Desperate, she follows Korshunov and Bondar into the underworld of Eastern Europe. There, her worst nightmares materialize from the darkness. Something is coming for her, and it may not even be alive. With Russian troops massed on the borders, and her father on the brink of death, Del follows a trail of bizarre murders ever deeper into no-man's-land. But can she uncover the truth and save her father before a new kind of war forever alters the world?

Note: Series is now available as a box set (ebook & audio)

Book 2 in Matthew Mather’s Delta Devlin series. While you don’t have to read book 1 first, I think it’s a nice intro to the character.

This was an action packed political techno thriller. After an international incident happens on American soil - Interpol asks Delta to join their hunt for answers. While she has personal motivations it becomes quickly clear that nearly everyone she encounters isn’t being completely honest. Even her abilities to act as a “human lie detector” may be compromised.

Start to finish this was a great listen. Fast paced with lots of mystery and suspense. What seems like science fiction is grounded in a lot of science fact bringing a heightened level of discomfort while listening. I also appreciate that Mather includes the very real resolution that not everyone with nefarious motives is brought to true justice.

Looking forward to book 3.

Narration:
January LaVoy is amazing here. She’s perfect at bringing Delta to life and enhancing Mather’s already immersive writing. Awesome listen.

Delta Devlin is outgrowing her detective position in Suffolk County Long Island. Reeling from an unsolved shooting that put her father in the hospital, she somehow lands a temporary gig in Europe with Interpol. As the Ukraine election approaches, there's Russian aggression, Ukraine resistance, and important figures are turning up dead, seemingly from something sharp inside their bodies.

Before long, Delta finds herself near the bullseye of a high-tech international sabotage effort that could lead to full-scale war.

I only very rarely give five stars to a fiction book. Science, sometimes true crime, biology, maybe some others, but only rarely fiction, although admittedly mysteries are favorite style for me, but they still rarely get five stars. This book, however, seriously tests the mold!
This is the second of the series, but it is not connected to the first. I'm curious as to how connected the next book is, and whether it really is a kind of sequence, or if it's a different story. ANYWAY, keeps the reader questioning and thinking, and wondering how the different "scenes" tie into each other, but the reader is totally pulled in and truly NEEDS to continue onto the next answer.
It's based in Ukraine, and given the current political crisis between Russia and Ukraine, it seems that much more current (although it's truly unrelated in reality). Different government agencies with different sources (FBI, state police, Interpol, Russian FSB, etc. etc) are all working together and against each other with no one knowing who is working for whom and what the actual truth is. Who is being used by whom, and who is on what side? And what IS this machine that is suddenly everywhere, and what is it making and how is it being used?
I love a book that keeps my brain working on overdrive!

I received a copy of this book for free in a Goodreads giveaway.

All I knew going in was that this was some sort of thriller, but I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. The book stars Delta Devlin, a detective who gets recruited into Interpol as she becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving her father getting shot, rival 3-D printer manufacturers, and an armed conflict in Ukraine. I liked Delta's character, how her special ability to see way more colors than the average person gives her just the slightest, almost-unrealistic advantage, and yet she seems very grounded and human. The action moves along at a brisk clip, and I thought the book built the suspense and intrigue well. The technology seemed almost like science fiction, but with 3-D printers getting more and more advanced, it didn't seem farfetched enough to seem completely out of the realm of possibility in the near future. I did think the ending was a bit rushed, like it was trying to rush into a sequel setup. Delta gets into what seems like a pretty dire situation less than 30 pages from the end, and yet she manages to get out of it (not really a spoiler since this is supposed to be the first or second in a series) and also have some plot-resolving conversations. The true villain is revealed, but a lot of it is just told in brief dialogue and the villain isn't brought to justice and basically gets away with all of their evil deeds, which felt rather unsatisfying.

What would you create with your Maker?

Delta Devlin has her own story now. And what a story! Caught in the middle of a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Del's new post with Interpol has her investigating a 3D printed plastic gun.

Expanding Delta into a series of full-length stories is a huge winner! Huge! The storyline twists your expectations and turns you to all new paths. I was glued to the story, unable to turn away for even a minute lest Delta be dragged off and I miss it! But the real gems are the characters. Each character is developed into a personality that leaves no hesitation in recognition. You know these people that the roles describe. You've known them forever, they live next door, or they're just like that rude aunt or your brother's old girlfriend. You know what I mean: Delta is just like your cousin, the Chief of Detectives at Dade County Sheriff's Office.

The depth of detail is amazing, as is usual in Mr. Mather's work. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Where to start? Detective Delta Devlin is a tetrachrome (don't worry, it's well explained) who is currently on a rotation to Interpol when her father is shot during a botched assassination attempt on the Ukrainian President. The assassin used a handgun made with a 3D printer which meant it was able to be slipped past the security at the UN. Delta is in the perfect position to find out who did it and why and what she finds is a big conspiracy and a 3d printing industry that could upset the balance of power. A sort of sci-fi detective story, this occasionally strains credulity, as do the best novels of this sort but it's also transporting. Delta's a terrific character - she's got the ability to read micrco expressions and colors in a way the rest of us can't but she's also oddly relatable. Thanks to edelweiss for the ARC. I enjoyed the first novel- don't worry - this is fine as a standalone- and this was a terrific followup. I'm eager for more.

Who is the maker?

Holy cow, what a page turner! In some ways this story is like Devlin's ability to see more colors than the average person. When you receive more information there is a requirement that the information be processed into usable content. This book has so much information, twists, turns, and blind alleys that discovering the truth is impossible. Indeed, there may be no truth. Sometimes, keeping things simple makes the conclusion simple - although possibly incomplete. This story combines a true old-fashioned detective story with modern technology and the challenges that it presents. Curiously, I am uncertain what the title means. Does it mean you are about to die, or perhaps something more sinister? In today's world, makers can be anyone and the items possible limitless. Imagine printing a new car from the tires to the engine and seats all from a 3-D printer. I wonder if we will be printing humans before long.

Not many writers could create a novel out of a character that was not the lead from one of his books. Well, Matthew Mather did just that! Delta Devlin was introduced in "The Dreaming Tree" and instantly became a fan favorite. When Mather decided to make a novel all around her, he hit a gold mine. "Meet Your Maker" is an excellent read, well written as always. When Devlin finds herself in situations that seem impossible, she somehow wrangles her way out of it. Devlin is an endearing character, she's devoted to her job and her family, which always comes first. Mather has hit it out of the park -- again!

The second in the Delta Devlin trilogy is far improved from the debut; Devlin has been rejected by the FBI (for reasons which seem blindingly obvious to all but her) and is seconded to Interpol. The story revolves around Russian backed Ukrainian rebels trying to gain power over a pro-Western government, so unfortunately it has been overshadowed by Putin’s real world invasion. The story is a combination of a standard police procedural and Mather’s usual threats about how technological advances may not always be a good thing; Devlin is a fairly likeable character, if a little quick to self pity. Overall the book is enjoyable and definitely kept me motivated to complete the series.

Intriguing Possibilities. This is similar in its application of emerging tech to Michael Crichton's Prey - a couple of the scenes here in particular brought that tale *immediately* to mind - while doing an excellent job of using real-world politics as an equally interesting backdrop to the science/ science fiction. Mather plays with the ideas of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in fascinating and terrifying ways - ways one hopes no one gets too many ideas from. Excellent story, and very much recommended.

The ONLY reason it isn't 5 stars is because I am not really into espionaze. The writing is excellent, the characters are very believable, and the plot takes off like a rocket! That extra chromozone of hers gets her into a lot of trouble. Yes, I highly recommend this novel, especially for spy novel lovers, even though it isn't about spies as much as most are. What IS it about? Read it for yourself! It's worth your time and effort.

The Real Delta Devlin book series #1 starts here

This book is the real start of the Delta Devlin series, with the previous book - The Dreaming Tree being a prequel story and Devlin being a secondary character to the story. This was confirmed by the author in the Afterword. This felt all in all to be much more like a normal Matthew Mather book, frantic chase across the world on a journey seeking the truth and perhaps saving the world at the same time in some way.

Edge of the seat

If you're looking for a well researched book and will have you up all night, on the edge of your seat look no further. In typical Mather fashion, this book is incredibly well researched, from the Ukrainian history to the cutting edge computer science, it's got it all. There's plenty of action and intrigue.

I love how this author writes letters at the end of his novels—I always find the information valuable and interesting. He explains that book one in this series was meant to be a sort of prequel “get to know” Delta Devlin. This sequel features her more prominently and takes us to Europe. Can’t wait for the third book, coming out soon!

A lot of chase and fight activity wrapped up in some interesting (but dated) technology. "With Russian troops massed on the borders, and her father on the brink of death, Del follows a trail of bizarre murders ever deeper into no-man's-land. But can she uncover the truth and save her father before a new kind of war forever alters the world?"

I really liked the first book in this series (The Dreaming Tree) but this one was weak in comparison. I hate to say it but I think it was because the main character, Delta Devlin, was just being introduced in The Dreaming Tree and was a secondary character. The first one was very original and interesting and Meet Your maker was only connected to it due to Devlin being the series character.

Meet Your Maker

The story itself was interesting and confusing at the same time. It was hard to follow with the different characters and locations, but it was also a mystery that was hard to solve. The end was left open with no final justice for Katherine.

Thoroughly enjoyed this new character development. Love mysteries and this book has multiple layers for you to sift through. Can't tell who the good guys are from the bad guys and the science is just enough ahead to be not only credable but probable. Looking forward to number 3!

A thriller using 3-D technology

I enjoyed the concept of using 3D tech as the main protagonist in this book. This book isn’t a techie read. It’s for the reader who has basic knowledge of 3D tech and its many applications.

Not sure about this one

I did not enjoy this as much as Matthew’s earlier cyber themed stories. There were a couple of interesting things that kept my attention but i didn’t feel the intensity that i felt in his earlier works.

Insanely Riveting. I Couldn’t Put It Down

Meet Your Maker is technically the first book in the Delta Devlin series, but it’s not the first book that features her. I did not read the book that was technically a prequel to this (where we were first introduced to Devlin as a side character). But, I definitely didn’t notice anything was missing. I felt like I knew Delta pretty well and this book did a good job introducing (or re-introducing) her to new readers.

Easily one of my favorite parts of reading a Matthew Mather book is the realism. Sure, it’s still a fictional story, but Mather makes sure that a lot of what happens in the story is based on real life. Most of the stuff he talked about in Meet Your Maker has developed so quickly that even in the time since he wrote the book (later 2019) to now, things have continued to grow and improve like he was talking about. Another thing you get with a Mather book is well-researched and real topics. Finally, you usually get insanely cutting edge technology used in scary ways. This book definitely has all of those.

The story itself honestly felt ripped out of the headlines with different conflicts and similar things that this was based on continue to happen in the dumpster fire that is 2020. I found it insanely riveting and I couldn’t put it down. Mather created a world that I definitely cannot wait to get back into and a world with a main character who is just a bit different than your usual main characters that you can’t help but root for her.

I thought that January LaVoy did a great job narrating this story and becoming Delta. I thought that she was the perfect voice for it and I hope that she’s tapped to narrate other books in this series.

Now that I’m finished with this, I’m likely going to go down a Youtube hole researching a lot of the stuff that was featured in this, but especially the condition that affected Delta’s vision.
