Her Unexpected Roommate

Rate this book
Two halves, One house...
When dreams clash can these two find love in an old fixer-upper?

Genevieve Winters is finally seeing light at the end of a long, dark tunnel, when her sole living relative passes away. The situation leaves her alone in the world, but offers something she's always dreamed of. The opportunity to open a bed and breakfast, turning her broken down inheritance into a place of light and laughter. Her dreams crash, however, when a handsome stranger shows up claiming he owns half of the seaside mansion and he's not willing to sell.

Cooper James couldn't believe his luck when his estranged grandfather left him a half ownership in home in Oregon. It was the perfect opportunity for Cooper to start fresh in a place where no one knew the mistakes of his past. His patience is tested when the other owner, a beautiful but angry woman, demands to open a bed and breakfast, a situation that would be in direct contrast to his hopes for a refuge in which to build a new life.

Can these two set aside their differences long enough to test the attraction simmering between them? Or will their fighting cost them everything?

Cheesy

This is the first book I've read by this author. It had a very juvenile feel to it. It was overly dramatic, ra-ra in parts, and the whole business/IRS/tax situation would have been easily solved by a consultation with the municipal tax authorities.

Cute!

I loved the town of Seaside Oregon. It’s a place where the town comes together for one of its own. I didn’t connect with the romance on this one, but I loved the cast of friends, and look forward to the rest of their stories.

Ok read

This story had some intrigue and nosey neighbors which I usually like but honestly I think the main characters were my problem. Didn't care for them much.

Learning to depend on others

This book isn’t what I thought it would be, but it is a good story. It’s amazing how much better things go when we have family and friends to help us instead of doing everything ourselves.

First in the Bulbs, Blossoms and Bouquets contemporary romance series and revolving around the town of Seaside Bay, Oregon. The couple focus is on Genni Winters and Cooper James.

My Take
I gotta give Ann props for something different. I really felt Genni's anger and frustration. I wanted to reach in and grab Cooper by the neck and throw him down the stairs. What is his issue that he comes out and states that he owns the house? He only owns half!! Jerk.

Then I'd like to do the same to Grandma Maggie. A coldhearted woman who drummed not needing or relying on anyone but herself onto her granddaughter. It was sweet that Grandma eventually came to her senses, but way too late.

Then I want to smack both Genni and Cooper for their lousy attitudes. Oy. Now, why would Cooper think Genni would welcome him? Is he that daft?

I'm thinking the theme is of gaining understanding that going it alone is, well, lonely and sad. If either of them had ever shut up long enough and listened, it would have been much easier for them. Okay, okay, easier for them, but not as exciting for the reader, lol.

Ann did a great job of stringing us along as to what Cooper had done that was so bad. Dressing him up as a biker really helped with that "disguise". She also pulled me in with all the memories Genni has of the place, using third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Genni's and Cooper's perspectives.

Just like Genni, Cooper has his own family issues, especially that indifferent set of parents he had. Rich people who showered him with money and nannies, but not much attention. I do wonder how many evils could be solved if parents simply gave their children attention . . .

I do like that the series is named for the group of friends Genni is a part of: Bulbs, Blossoms and Bouquets. I can see why Genni sees it as a source of emotional support. Heck, the whole town is a support!

Ann is setting us up for future stories in the series.

LOL, I love Grandma Nan: "We're old," she scolded. "Not dead."

I am curious as to those "meager savings" of Genni's. From the sound of the house, it needs a LOT of work. And why hasn't Genni been fixing the place up before Grandma died? Did she never tell Grandma of her plans? For that matter, why did Grandma leave this "little" complication out of the conversation? And what was with her filing system?? Genni's got some warped thinking when it comes to Cooper and loans. Oy! And then Genni doesn't get it when Cooper makes his final decisions. Well DUHHH. Thank god for that smarter inner voice of hers!

As for the back taxes. Um, wouldn't the government have records for property taxes?? Why do Genni and Cooper go through all this brouhaha when a phone call should settle this?

It does take awhile for the selfish Genni and Cooper to understand the other's position. Phew.

Her Unexpected Roommate is primarily character-driven with their actions reflecting their experiences. I did find the story slow only because I was so fed up with their childish behavior. Thank god for the town! They jump in to help as soon as they understand the problem.

Awww, Cooper is so sweet in his summation of Genni's character.

The Story
It's a shock for Genni when she learns that the house she grew up in is only half hers. Genni is the only family Maggie had, so who else could possibly be in the running?

The Characters
Genevieve "Genni" Winters has had an unloved life, putting everyone ahead of her. Esther had been Genni's mother. Maggie Winters, grandma, had been a widow who had suffered many losses before dying of lymphatic cancer. The beach-based Boardwalk Manor had been Genni's home and is still her dream.

Cooper James is Verl's grandson. Verl James had been a wealthy friend of Grandma's who helped her out of a tight spot. Nova is Cooper's beloved bike.

Seaside Bay, Oregon
Rosalinda "Rose" owns The Hidden Daffodil, a flower shop. The sweet Lilly is her deaf daughter. The sassy Caroline "Caro" makes the best candy! Charlize "Charli" Mendez is Felix's tomboyish sister, a jill-of-all-trades. I've no idea why Charli's last name is shortened. The perky Melody, Bennett's sister, owns a smoothie shop. And she's making me hungry!

Felix Mendoza is the captain of the SunCatcher , a fishing boat. Hermit is the dog Felix found on the beach. Bennett is the mailman and quite the artist; Marcia is his and Melody's crazy mother. Captain Ken Wamsley is with the police, as is Officer Windsor. Jensen.

Frank runs a garage and could use some help. His dog has had puppies. Smalls, a.k.a. Butterscotch, Scottie, is a more inquisitive one of the pups. Brooklyn runs a girly boutique. Mr Filchor is Maggie Winters' lawyer who reads the will. Filchor knows Herb. Mrs Munchkin is Filchor's snotty secretary. Grandma Nan runs a motel. The Clam Pot has the best seafood. The Seafood Galley and Denny's are chain restaurants.

Hudson Baumgartner is a lawyer with The Tax Mitigation Company. The FBI has been hunting for Tony Wesel for some time.

Ms Mendoza reads Verl James' will. Miguel is the head mechanic who helped Cooper out. Ciana/Cianna Fowers had plans. Blackman, Inc. Carl is a lawyer back East?? Gloria is the receptionist at Binger, Binger and Stern. Gene Stern was the Jameses' lawyer back East. Agent Starling is with the FBI.

The Cover and Title
The cover is so sweet with its "valance" of purple and pink flowers at the top of a hazy white window, its sill crowded with white bottles and a green plant in a crock. The foreground continues the white theme with a worn wood table top. In the center is a sharp vignette of yellow and mauve tulips and pink hyacinths in a square glass vase. In front of it is a glass bowl of cereal, in front of which is a small plate of croissants with half an orange to the right of it. Slightly behind is a glass of orange juice and a white cup of coffee. Just under the floral valance is the series info in deep green with the title immediately below it in the same green. The author's name is beneath the tabletop, at the bottom, also in green.

The title is all too true, as Cooper is Her Unexpected Roommate.

Sweet enemies to lovers story

This book is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the wholesome storyline and wonderful characters.

After being raised by her grandma Gennie is surprised when she finds out that her grandmother sold half of their house to a family friend that helped save the house from tax collectors. She has always wanted to have something of her own. She wanted to make her house a bed and breakfast.

When Cooper’s grandfather passed away is is very surprised to hear that he has inherited 1/2 of a beachfront house. Cooper has a fresh start laid out in front of him. All he has to do is to talk the other owner to sell out to him.

This is where the hatred begins. This is a very good quick read. Definitely worth the read!

Well, I have parts I liked and parts I didn't like.

I'll start with what I liked.

I enjoyed how Gennie grew and learned to open herself up. Her grandmother really did a job on her and taught her to be alone in life. It was rather sad. She didn't have any idea how to have friends, how to accept friendship, or to be there for others. That part was sad.

I bought it and I'll probably read another book or two, if they are any good I'll continue reading the series when I have time. I liked the small town feel and the friendly caring about each other, coming together as a community.

I liked Cooper, I would like to see him repairing his life, with his family maybe a little. I'd like for them to show up for a vacation and find him married, with children, and owning a sought after bed and breakfast. He needs to be grounded and this story is a really good start for him. I do think he needs something productive to keep him busy.

I loved the community. How they all came together and worked to help. Then how they saw the big picture in the end, a bed and breakfast would help bring visitors in for the whole town.

What I didn't like:

The storyline issue of the back taxes would have easily been resolved with a simple phone call AND every single person that found out about the tax issue would have known exactly what to do about it. They are home owners and business owners, good grief! I think the author might not have every owned a house/land before. The taxes get paid to the County offices or some sort of official government office near you. Easy to figure this out.

Then how unorganized the grandmother was. That was very frustrating. She didn't sound like she had dementia or any serious handicaps that would have caused her mind to be feeble. I think as harsh of a person as she was, and how rigid in her life, along with the tax trouble she'd been in before would have taught her to be meticulous and part of that would have been proper care of her paperwork. She would have had her papers in order.

What I thought would happen was that the old family attorney would have kept the money the grandmother had been giving him for taxes and not paying them. He could have kept the tax situation from grandma until she died then let the tax people come for their money. He might have also had all grandmother's papers to "keep them safe". Or Gennie could have looked in a Bank Box and found them. That way he could hire this slick dude to scare Gennie into signing the deed away to the attorney, who'd have put it up for sale then split the money with the slick dude. I really thought that was how the story was going to play out, especially since the attorney's secretary was rude to Gennie. But nope, he was just old and clueless.

Older people who've made a big mistake before would be overly zealous about making sure they didn't do that again, this part of the story really didn't fit at all.

*************
Overall I did like the characters and the community. I just didn't like the story theme all that much. It's worth reading if you have time.

For the purpose of the 52 Book Reading Challenge here are the prompts it fits.

2, an inheritance. Both inherit half of this house and property.

4, starts with H. Her Unexpected Roommate

9, dedication. Yes.

11, secrets. Yes, both main characters and the slick dude.

19, typographic cover. The font for the writing is unique and pretty. Very noticeable.

26, epilogue. 6 months later.

38, enemies to lovers. They fight a LOT at the beginning, both wanting to possess the house.

44, a contemporary setting. Set in the today world.

It was fine, but I'm glad it was free. Honestly I was kind of bored with it most of the time. I think it probably fits as a good beach read? Something simple with easy characters.

Most of the below isn't spoilers until the end, but I'm hiding it just in case.

Her Unexpected Roommate is the first book in the Blubs, Blossoms, and Bouquets series by Laura Ann. Genevieve “Genni” Winters finally sees light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. After her sole living relative passes away, she inherits Boardwalk Manor, the family home. With plans to renovate the old house and open a bed and breakfast, she looks forward to a brighter future. Her dreams are dashed when she learns that she is only half owner of the house. Cooper James inherits the other half of ownership when his grandfather passes. He can’t believe his luck. He is desperate for a fresh start and the house is the open door he needs. He doesn’t anticipate the beautiful but angry Genni who demands he sell his half. Despite their opposition, there is a simmering attraction that builds between them. Can they come together and fight for the house before they lose it all?
Her Unexpected Roommate is my first book by Laura Ann. Unfortunately, I was bored. I didn’t care for Genni. Despite her difficult life, she acted like a child throwing a tantrum. Cooper had the best potential to be a great character. He was more likable as someone who was repairing his life and bettering himself. However, they were childishly antagonistic without a reason to be, especially with their first meeting. The first sign of opposition to Genni’s proposal, she storms off?!?! The threat to both their dreams could have been avoided with a little investigation rather than taking someone’s word at face value. And no one thought to double check. Not Genni? Not Cooper? No one in town? It seemed all very far-fetched. Oh my gosh, what’s with all the fainting!?!? Genni needs to see a doctor as she faints a lot! Overall, I did not enjoy Her Unexpected Roommate and may not continue the series.

Good

I liked it...
I'm in the middle of changing linguistic thinking caps. I might have to speak soon. I might have to enunciate.
It read easily, the author was obviously of American stock & I somehow feel at home with his or her work. I suspect a her. I suspect a her more so due to topic and the absolute need to produce proper English literary works: even if gürls traditionally aren't to be taught to read. (My Goodreads is under investigation by nations where a lady, is to never see written word) I also feel as though I've too heavily intruded on a lady's boudoir. Romance? Christian Romance? Angelic litigative culture? How did that hit my tablet? It must be free. It should have been paid for. She needs thanked if that was her doing. I seem to be scoring free books from literary circles back home where everyone is commanded and rudely demanded to write, sing, or think: we are to use or noggins for some reason and refrain from babbling and we ain't to not no say the würd "aint" because it upsets the delicate translation system elsewhere in the relidgeux werold.

Sappy, cute, good. Is this a Harlequin book?

Check it out. Download she. Read a book, or have it read to you.
Even if Literacy is a legal term. Even if Literacy is a felony.

Based on the coverwork, I smell an author who might know someone with a pistol, who is probably at war with illiteracy and therefore drafted into war as an American Citizen.

Her Unexpected Roommate (Bulbs, Blossoms and Bouquets #1) by Laura Ann

5 Stars

This story caught me a little off guard because I was expecting a small town “budding” romance and it was that, yet so much more. The romance was in the background most of the time because of everything else going on. It's hard to explain. In my opinion this author did an amazing job transporting me to this town, getting to know a little bit about the townsfolk and making me feel like I was part of everything going on. I didn't really ever completely connect with any one character in this story, but I really didn't need to. I of course was pulling for Genni and the author gave enough to allow me to understand who she was and what she was going through. I love how Cooper came into the story and why. It was unique and definitely made the love story part of it different for me, I love that. Some things were predictable but not in the way I expected them to be. I really thought this whole story was going a totally different direction then what direction it actually took. I had to keep reminding myself I was reading a book, this is not real life because I found myself yelling at Genni and Cooper so many times, but if they had done the things they should have, then this book would have been just another sweet romance story.

I really enjoyed this book, and the author had me hooked from page one. I love her style of writing and can't wait to read more from Seaside Bay!

Loved It!

a good story, but a bit too slow for me.
Loved the characters, but some of the issues like the back taxes, seemed a bit too frazzled..

trying to keep interested through what I felt were unnecessary descriptions.
it almost felt like a teenager was telling the story ...

Genni has spent her life with her grandmother ..who was a nonloving, cold type, firm, and yet she knew one day she would most likely inherit the house she has lived in and loves. Her dream to start a bed and breakfast where families can come and enjoy the Oregon coast.
her grandmother’s death and at the reading of the will ...
she is shocked to find that she inherits only half of the house. ...
Clear across the country Cooper is shocked when he finds his grandfather has died leaving him an inheritance, half of a house on the Oregon coast, He realizes it's a perfect place to get a new start.

Both want the house but with differing plans for it. As they struggle over the house a threat appears that could take the house from both of them unless they can work together and find a solution...
Yet during this time they fall in Love...

When Gennis grandma dies, she inherits her mansion type house. Except she didn't inherit all of it... A guy who she's never met has partial ownership....
This was really good!! It used my favorite trope, enemies to lovers!! The trope was well executed, and seemed well paced. Not too fast, not too slow.
This book could've benefited from being in first person, it would've made it slightly less confusing. But I still liked it alot!!
The characters were all realistic, and Cooper's fear of spiders is kind of hilarious!! (And side note, why are all the male leads in clean romances named Cooper?)
I called Hudson out from day one, I've read enough romance to know that he's the guy who the girl starts falling for, unaware that he's the wrong guy. Just saying, I'm good at predicting plots. It might have been a little bit predictable, so what? I never predicted what Hudson was gonna do tho...
I won't say anything to avoid spoilers, but he surprised me. REALLY surprised me.
CW: Content level: clean. Some no detail kisses towards the end, light romantic content such as blushes, shivers, nothing too much, though, and a little bit of noticing.

New beginnings, new struggles, and happy surprises
The first book in a new series by Laura Ann that again showcases her ability to introduce you to characters that you will care about within the first few pages. Not only are her main characters wonderful but her supporting characters are well rounded and full. Genni has spent her life with her grandmother knowing that she would one day inherit the house she has lived in and loves. Her dream to start a bed and breakfast where families can come and enjoy the Oregon coast. On her grandmother’s death she is shocked to find that she inherits one-half of the house. Cooper is shocked when he finds his grandfather has died leaving him an inheritance, one-half of a house on the Oregon coast, a perfect place to get a new start. Both want the house but with differing plans for it. As they struggle over the house a threat appears that could take the house from both of them unless they can work together and find a solution. **First is all I’m so done with attempting to write a review with GR when you finish a book & having it unexpectedly disappear. That doesn’t happen on Amazon.

This is a good beginning of a new series with a different plot from most Cozies. Genni & Cooper both have their own set of monsters in their heads & will have to settle those in order to even share the home they have jointly inherited. I look forward to more about the various characters in the next books. The biggest issue I have is why the IRS was ignored when some stranger arrives & claims a Quarter odd a million dollars is owed in back taxes? Obviously the first response & best way to obtain information would have been to request past reports & any attorney would have done that. But that works have changed the story. Secondly other than Rosie having a flower shop the Bulbs, Blossoms & Bouquets title didn’t have much to do with the book.

Nice, clean romance

Loved the plot..thought the author went a little overboard at times with characters' constant "what if" concerns. The only things truly disliked was the "screeching". Ginnie didn't strike me as a character who went from fainting to screeching. She was a "Winters woman who survived" & was willing to do whatever it took to keep her house. That type of strength in a woman doesn't mesh with screeching at people & fainting every time she's surprised. Cooper however stayed in character throughout the book & had a strength that I admired. Reminded me a lot of my husband, always there to protect & help others. Scottie was so cute I wanted to see & hold her. I especially liked this being a clean romance. For that alone, I'm giving 5 stars but the author did well on the plot too. I loved the "knight in shining armor " showing up at the last minute. Looking forward to more romances by this author.

HER UNEXPECTED ROOMMATE
A Bulbs, Blossoms & Bouquet Romance
Book 1

LAURA ANN

Review by Author Roy Murry

Genni and Cooper are in a difficult situation. They each own half of a mansion their grandparents willed them in an ocean tourist town in Oregon.

Cooper, driven by a yearning for a fresh start, embarks on a journey across the USA to claim his rightful half. However, Genni, steadfast in her resistance to change, remains unmoved.

She wants to run a bed and breakfast, her life’s dream; he does not. The battles begin.

So starts the hate-love romance, interrupted by another event they have no control over—a tax collector. They now become partners looking for a solution, with Milo, the puppy Coop, biker, and mechanic, brought home.

The following events lead to a plausible ending with the help of friends. However, there is too much fluff in the story's events—they are overly written.

Laura Ann's writing is cute and entertaining, but it is not a good

Lead-in for a series. This novel is a stand-alone long read.

An enjoyable read

This was a beautifully written wholesome story. Genni's grandmother died leaving her everything including the big home that Genni grew up in, but she only left her half the house. A good friend helped Genni's grandmother years earlier when she had tax problems and in exchange she gave the friend half ownership of the house. The man died leaving his half ownership to his grandson Cooper.
Genni had dreams of turning the home into a bed and breakfast. But things didn't quite turned out that way. Cooper moves in as he had half of the home and doesn't want it turned into a bed and breakfast. So the battle begins to see who will win. Who will get the house? Genni? Cooper? Or the tax collector who says that there is a quarter of a million owed in back taxes. The characters are will written and I loved the storyline. I recommend this book.

A lovely clean romance read

Ginni, a waitress with a lonely past, is angered when Cooper, a mechanic with a tainted past, barges into her life after the loss of her Grandma Maggie. As the story progresses a battle of wills starts, a huge wrench gets thrown in the works, and if they can put aside their differences they may both come out with more than they were looking for. Laura Ann’s Unexpected Roommate is a lovely clean romance read with plenty of cuteness and sass. There is also a large circle of friends I am looking forward to learning more about as the series expands.

I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Great small town romance

Genni has dreamed of turning her and her grandmother's house, Broadway Manor, into a bed and breakfast. But her dreams are put on hold when she finds out she owns only half of the house. Meantime, Cooper, who is at loose ends, finds out he has inherited half a house on the Oregon coast, so he heads to Oregon to find his half a house. What happens next is a learning process for both Genni and Cooper, because someone is trying to take the house from both of them. Can Genni and Cooper put aside their feelings long enough to work together? Can Genni's friends and Coopers new friends help save the house? Will Genni and Coopers secrets destroy everything?

This book was offered as a free download in a Social Media ad ... So, sure why not.

Two people from opposite ends of the country learn that they have each inherited HALF of a mansion.
This leaves the beneficiaries making assumptions about each other, which leads to misunderstandings and a lot of animosity.

There are a few grammatical errors though they weren't horribly distracting from the reading flow. However the continuity problem that had me flipping back and trying to figure out when what events happened.....thus wasting time I could/should have been enjoying the book.

The back tax story was an obvious scam and frankly was unnecessary.
More drama could have been established through Genevieve's Grandmothers Journal, the paint wars, or even Coopers mysterious past.

I’m glad that’s over! I hate leaving negative reviews because I’m sure the author poured her heart into her work but I also want to be honest.
This book was super cheesy and the main characters were very immature. The writing felt very juvenile. If I got a dollar for every time the author said “she put her hands to her hips”, or “he placed his hands on his hips”, or “putting a hand to her hips” I’d be rich! There were also a couple of spelling mistakes in this book. I was super frustrated that nobody thought to call the tax office to figure out what was actually going on, that’s the first thing they should have done, but I guess if they did that there wouldn’t be a story. I did enjoy the sense of community in this small town, and the dog.

Kept Me Reading

This book was good enough to keep me turning pages, and that’s saying something. Technically, this book did pretty well. There weren’t many typos and the pacing seemed like it flowed well 90% of the time. I only found it slowed when the MCs second-guessed the same things even when they shouldn’t have. The MCs were likable underdogs who really snagged my attention from the start. There was a token mention of faith in God early on but it’s quickly mentioned and dismissed thereafter. That was disappointing. However, I am interested enough in the rest of the characters to check out their stories when I’m able. If you enjoy sweet romance, then do check this book out.

Let the painting wars begin!

This is the first time I’ve read a longer length book by this author. I loved it! There was great character development and I felt totally part of this small community. The emotions were raw and very real at points yet sweet and light in other moments. I loved the experience of reading this book and found it so hard to put down for things like sleep and meals.
Cooper and Genni were believable enemies to friends to boyfriend girlfriend. Their insecurities and bad experiences in the past just made the HEA ending that much sweeter. Loved the little dog Butterscotch too. I look forward to more books in this series.

DNF. Genni was overly rude and hostile to Cooper when she first met and she cried so much during the first couple of chapters. She has one of those no one wants me so I'm going to be by myself personalities that I don't like because there were so many around her that were kind to her and wanted to help. She immediately goes and yells at the poor lawyer for something not in his control and faints when meeting Cooper for the first time. On top of that, she tries to guilt trip him into selling and doesn't even listen to him before having a tantrum and storming off. I just couldn't stand her personality to continue reading and see if it gets better.

I enjoyed the story 'Her Unexpected Roommate' by Laura Ann. It was well written and gave the reader a feeling for the small seaside town and all of it's inhabitants. The people are nice and take care of each other and all join together to make it a pleasant place to live. This is the story of Genevieve Winters and her wish to turn the home she has inherited into a bed and breakfast inn but learns unexpectedly that she owns only half the house and soon meets the house's other owner. Neither one refuses to back down about the future of the house and soon find themselves sharing the residence and hurdling obstacles together.

Stupid, Stupid, STUPID!

The entire premise of this steaming hot mess of a novel is completely stupid.

Spoilers coming:

One, phone call or visit to the local tax office would have solved the simpy, crybaby heroine's problem. But no, she chose instead to accept the conman's word on EVERYTHING.

Repeat: ONE STUPID PHONE CALL OR VISIT TO THE TAX OFFICE would have exposed the conman for what he was.

I don't know what universe the author comes from, but it sure isn't our universe.

I can suspend disbelief for fantasy or science fiction, but for a contemporary novel? Really?

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!
