What’s one way to make a lasting impression on a man? Shoot him.
When I accidentally send a bullet flying through a handsome stranger I’m mortified. When I find out he’s a doctor who treats children with life-threatening heart problems? I’m determined to make it up to him.
Playing nursemaid to Dr. Oliver Kinkaid is easier said than done. At least while having to pretend I’m not attracted to him. He’s a decade older than me, supremely sexy and has his life together. What’s not to swoon over?
Especially since I’m scraping by as a teacher, sharing an apartment with two friends and an exciting Friday night means binge-watching Dateline episodes with a bag of potato chips. Not much to swoon over here.
Until I find a hidden letter in our century old apartment that predicts I’ll meet my soul mate and live happily ever after.
Things start to develop between Oliver and me. Our mutual attraction grows to combustible levels and I can’t help but wonder if the letter was right—is he my perfect match?
Then I find out Oliver’s secret and I want to put another bullet through him.
Hit or Miss is a lighthearted, heartwarming and steamy romantic comedy with a happy ending and a cast of hilarious characters that will have you laughing out loud until the last page. No cheating.
This book had SO MANY problems that I finally gave up.
In the very first chapter we meet three, twenty-something, single girls sharing an apartment in a suburb of Boston. The lead female, Jemma, comes home from work to find the door to the apartment wide open. She is terrified that they are being robbed, yet she GOES INSIDE THE APARTMENT ALONE ANYWAY. She hears noises coming from inside and calls to her roommates with no response. so she GOES FURTHER INTO THE APARTMENT. She looks for a weapon, makes a mental joke about using a bottle of nail polish, and continues in. It turns out to not be an intruder, but a dog who got inside because one of her roommates left the door open that morning, like she often does. Not unlocked, but WIDE OPEN. When said roommate returns home she shrugs it off, saying she probably DID leave it open because she was carrying something and must have forgotten. The three girls laugh it off, "Ha! You're so forgetful, but we love you!".
But Jemma remains completely rattled by the experience she goes to a shooting range to consider getting a gun. While at the range for her very first time holding a gun/shooting a gun, she is completely alone until a hot stranger joins her to begin shooting in his own lane and she first, accidentally points the LOADED gun directly AT him and then later, gets startled and drops the gun, shooting him. Listen, I am not even remotely a "gun person". I have never been inside a shooting range. But even I know that this set up is ridiculous. NO CHANCE would a first timer be left without employee supervision and no way would any of this be able to happen.
Do I need to go on with this review? This is all in the first TWO chapters! But I kept reading. What followed was more of the same. A cop asking out the female lead while taking her official statement about the accident. A doctor introducing a patient, by name, to his girlfriend while at an official appointment she decided to "tag along" on? Hello, HPPA violation! Or how about the doctor administering a shot who makes sexually suggestive remarks while doing so? At his place of business. To a female patient.
Besides the many (and I mean MANY) story holes, the female lead is extremely immature. She cries at the drop of a hat, requires a near stranger to hug her while getting a shot, apologizes 10 times in every chapter for things she either can't control, didn't cause, or has already apologized for numerous times. She was truly a weak female.
I. JUST. COULDN'T.
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest feedback. They are likely regretting this decision.

This book was amazing!! I laughed, fell in love, got mad, and fell in love again!
The friendship between the ladies was the best. They all brought something different to the table. Jemma, a third grade teacher just trying to find her way in life, decides on a recreation activity and ends up accidentally shooting a pediatric cardiologist who happens to be ten years older than her. They can’t deny the connection and are miserable when apart.
They even have so much in common her divorced mother and his divorced father are dating which was a shock to them both. Ollie had a secret that almost tore them apart. But love prevailed! Their chemistry is off the charts smoking hot!
When Jemma accidentally shoots Ollie at the range, it was the best day of both their lives, because it brought them each other. Jemma can't get over this feeling, though, that she's not good enough for him. He's ten years older, he's a doctor, making far more than she does as a young teacher. What does he see in her anyway?
Though Ollie had to get shot to meet Jemma, he can't help falling for her. She's a bright light, and nothing will keep them apart. Nothing but his secret, that is. Will she ever forgive him when she finds out what he's hiding?
This is a sweet, fun and funny romance with the two most adorable characters. I loved Ollie and Jemma together, loved their meet-cute, and the way they seamlessly fit together. Now I'm really excited to read Jemma's roommate and their other roommate's brother's story, Three's A Crowd.

🌌 What can I say about this story? It's funny and sweet, that’s for sure.
I had to be honest, the entire book I was waiting for Oliver' secret to be reveal and I. DID. NOT. SEE. THAT. COMING. I was glad that it was revealed when it was tho.
This is a light story perfect for every one. Even if I'm not always comfortable with age gap romance, with their ages I didn’t notice the difference (even if they keep talking about it 😂)
I'm excited to read what’s next!!
Hit or Miss follows a third-grade teacher name Jemma, who accidentally shoots a stranger named Oliver at a gun target range. Jemma feels terrible for injuring Oliver who is a doctor that treats young kids, so she volunteers to help him during his recovery period. They get to know each other during errand runs and carpooling to and from work together over the next few weeks, and their connection becomes evident that they have feelings for each other. The only issue they think might be a problem, is there is a ten-year difference between the two of them.
This book was cute, enjoyable, addicting, and I plan to read more by this author! I really enjoyed both Jemma and Oliver’s characters quite a bit, and the way the age gap was addressed was very well done. I’ve read that some people were distracted by that, but I actually really enjoyed it!
I’m SO glad that it didn’t take forever to get past the big reveal, but it was so rushed. It was mentioned in one chapter, and that’s a big YIKES (in my opinion), but then immediately it was taken care of. It just felt a little sloppy toward the end of the book.
Overall, I enjoyed it. I would group this book with all the other romance books that I’ve enjoyed in the past, but nothing really stood out to me as outstanding. That’s a personal preference with my romance book, but I prefer when there is more substance and strong emotions, or multilayered and complex characters. This was really fun, but I like when my emotions are pulled a little more in romance books.
Things I enjoyed:
-I liked the romance. -The beginning of the book was fantastic! -I loved the characters!
Things that I didn’t love:
-The whole letter at the beginning of the book seemed really out of place. -I don’t know what it was, but I couldn’t picture Jemma’s character very well. I *think* she was Hispanic because there would be words/phrases in Spanish, but then not mention it again. -Honestly, I think the writing got sloppy towards the end. The word combinations and even errors were distracting and hard to read through.
Jemma and Oliver’s story was so cute and light for the most part. There first meeting was hilarious and I thought it was cute of Jemma to offer her services to Oliver, I mean she did shoot him after all. The banter was funny but this isn’t really what I consider a age gap romance
Gemma and her roommates live in a nice, but older apartment building, where Gemma finds a letter, under the sink, predicting she would meet her new love with a BANG!!!!! And that is exactly how Teacher Gemma meets Pediatric Heart Specialist, Dr. Ollie.
After she accidentally shoots him, her generous but guilty heart leads her to nurse him back to health. Along the way Luke, Ollie's heart patient; Gemma's friends; and their parents bind them together, until Ollie's "secret" threatens to destroy their future relationship together.
"A cute original story full of life and heart. Jemma and Oliver definitely have a quirky meet cute. As Jem and Ollie dance around the tension these two create, we readers get more insight into their hopes and dreams. I loved them both as characters. The story was fun and cute. I look forward to reading more in the series.
""“Do you remember when you asked me if there was a type of cloud I hadn’t seen yet and was still searching for?” I nod. “I found it. It’s you."" ~ Oliver"
Y’all this book. The meet cute was one of the best I have ever read in my life and I still laugh thinking about it. Jemma reads a note from a woman, who once lived in her apartment, that promises she’ll find love, and then goes out soon after reading that letter to blow off some steam and legit shoots our hero at a gun range (accidentally! She swears!) What ensues is a cute story about how Jemma and Ollie turn accidental bodily harm and superstition into a sweet relationship.
The writing was funny, the characters were clever and smart (for the most part, you know one of them always has to go and do something stupid), and the story in general was just fun. The first ⅔ of the story was definitely stronger than the back end of the story which lost some steam, but I was so invested at that point that I had no problem pushing through and finding out how it resolved. This book was also hella steamy, and we all know I love when those scenes are executed well.
Now for my biggest (and really my only) issue, aside from one character’s inability to be SMART, was the main trope I suppose? One of the primary things that keeps popping up throughout the story is their age difference (both in Jemma and Ollie’s heads as well as from the mouths of their friends) however, I didn’t see it as that big of a deal? It was a ten-year difference, Ollie being the older one, but he’s only 36 and, honestly it’s probably me being sensitive, but he kept calling himself old! And as someone in their 30s it hurt my heart because I don’t feel ancient and I definitely don’t think 26 year olds are that much younger? It just rubbed me the wrong way a bit, and it was not the kind of age difference I would technically consider an age gap or that big of a deal, but to each his own. I wish it hadn’t been harped on so much throughout the story, but eventually I just started to breeze by it.
All of that aside, I enjoyed this book, for sure. I had a great time with these characters, I laughed my ass off more than a few times, Jemma was a baller (read it and you’ll learn why), and I look forward to reading the rest of the Apartment 3B books (Fiona is going to be a BLAST) and seeing what Everly Ashton has next for us.
Many thanks to wildfire marketing for the review copy!
Such a cute, steamy, heart warming read. This meet cute is completely unique perfection. The story of Jemma and Ollie is one of the sweetest, funnest reads I've had in a while. I truly enjoyed this book.
I loved this story from start to finish. It had plenty of laughs throughout and then love you can't describe. This is definitely one book you will want to read
This is the first book I have read by Everly Ashton but it certainly won’t be the last. If you are looking for a hilarious, laugh out loud, entertaining read look no further than Hit or Miss. Jemma is a third grade teacher bored with her social life so she decides to liven up her life by learning to shoot and it’s on her first visit to the range that she meets Dr Oliver (Ollie) Kincaid, well she more than meets him she accidentally shoots him in the leg.....felling bad she volunteers to look at Dr McHottie and that’s when this book starts to heat up..... This book had me from the first chapter where Jemma finds her apartment has been broken into by a dog, yes I said a dog. The friendship she shares with her roommates is so special, these ladies made me laugh from the first page and I found myself wishing for a group of friends just like these ladies. This is a book with all the feels, I laughed, I swooned and my heart broke when Jemma showed us her vulnerability, I adored all the characters in this book and I loved the storyline so guess nothing else to say apart from highly recommending this fun, entertaining read that has a few twists and turns along the way. Looking forward to reading more by this very talented author because Hit and Miss is romantic comedy at its best !!!!
I liked this book as well, and I should really be sleeping but whatever. I like an age gap and I might just say WTF?! WHY DID I RELATE TO JEMMA SO MUCH! 1. I’m 25, turning 26 this year. 2. My mom is exactly the same, overbearing and with the need to call / or / and control everything. 3. My life is not in fact put together, and probably won’t anytime soon 4. We love an age gap... 5. QUE TAMBIÉN SOY LATINA (im also latina)
This book spoke to me, and I related so much. I get that she wasn’t sporting her heritage as much as she should but I guess she’s still American lol
The fact that JEMMA was a realistic and didn’t wait for her happiness be dictated by a man, and just left when HE LITERALLY BETRAYED HE by not telling the truth was amazing!
Loved this book, and it’s characters. I would’ve loved fo see more of the future. Not just their engagement, but married life and kids and all. He is still 10 years older, that would be fun!!
This was the most hilarious meet-cute I have ever read.
Jemma, who is a elementary school teacher, found a note from the women who previously lived in her apartment. The note said that she will find the love of her life. So she goes out to let off some steam at a gun range and accidentally shoots Ollie (who is also the hero in the book, lol). She swears this was an accident. So to make up for it she volunteers to look after him.
This book was so funny, I loved it. The connection between Ollie and Jemma is not just instant but it is something that keeps building between them. He keeps Jemma at a distant because of his age. But both of these characters have their own insecurities that holds them back from experiencing and amazing relationship. But in the end is it better to be miserable without each other or better to be happy together 😊
Jemma and Oliver's meet cute was one of the more memorable ones I've read in a romcom and I loved the "nursing him back to health" scenario. I kind of wish that had gone on for a little longer and included some more forced proximity moments, but I still adored how their relationship developed.
The conflict was also something a little different and I liked that the reader was kept in the dark about it too so I didn't have that "just tell her the truth!" sense of foreboding for too long. The drama wasn't too over the top and fit the light-hearted tone of the book perfectly.
This had the perfect amount of steam, humour, drama and romance for me and I'm so happy to have discovered this new author. The set up for the other characters was great too. I loved seeing the friendship between Jemma, Marlowe and Fiona and I'm definitely invested in the characters enough to continue with the series!
I loved this first book from Everly Ashton (I don't know the true identity so no clue if I'm already a fan of their other works), but this book had me pretty much laughing from start to finish. First, I loved the friendship between Jemma and her best friends Fiona and Marlowe; they've known each other since forever and they've got that unbreakable best friend bond. I don't know if you could classify the first encounter between Oliver and Jemma as a meet-cute, but it was definitely entertaining, dangerous and all-around mortifying (since it obviously wasn't fatal lol). I loved the slow burn between them, with both them not even a tiny bit close to discerning if any attraction could be reciprocated. I was surprised to learn Oliver's secret (and it's a big one); but what I didn't like was that he seemingly dismissed Jemma's feelings and advice about the situation, yet when his best friend basically gave the same advice, that's when he decided it was time to make that last, final push to set his world to right. Other than that, this is an enjoyable and fun story with some hot sexy times, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Oh my goodness! Don’t wait to read these. Just go ahead & jump on in feet first! Jemma & Ollie’s story is sweet, hilarious, complex, & perfect! They are both a wee bit quirky and I honestly think they’ve made for each other. I love how they slowly fell in love while Jemma was helping take care of Ollie. And when the end was near, both knew it was something that was going to break them. But putting those broken pieces back together had me smiling & rooting for them the whole way.
Everly Ashton is a new author to me and I am surprised I have not come across her books before. As soon as I read the blurb for Hot Or Miss I just knew I had to read this one. This was an entertaining read that I really enjoyed. I enjoy romantic comedies and this was a good example. There were numerous times that I found myself laughing out loud and smiling like a lunatic.
When Jemma accidentally shoots the smoking hot Dr. Oliver (Ollie) Kincaid she feels so much guilt that she volunteers to look after him. The connection between them is intense and I liked the build up as their attraction grows between them.
I’m not normally a fan of age gap stories but I enjoyed this one. The characters were easy to relate too and I found them likeable, although Jemma’s lack of self esteem was heartbreaking. This was a story that held some twists and turns which added an additional layer to the story and held me captivated. The secondary characters, such as Nick were fun and I enjoyed the camaraderie that he and Ollie shared.
This book was great in so many fun, thoughtful, magical, and loving ways. It was about more then just a couple finding love. It was about lasting friendships, about parental hardships, falling out of love and the guilt of divorce when it's more complicated then just the marriage. About letting go and moving on, knowing when to forgive or accept because your own happiness is more important. And then there was all the fun! Who doesn't want to meet a well endowed and easy on the eyes doctor? I know I wouldn't mind. Not sure I'd shoot him to make it happen but then again who knows I could be wrong. Jenna's accidentally shooting of Dr. Kincaid may be magic or maybe it's fate. You'll have the opportunity to decide, I definitely think there is a little magic in Jemma and Ollie's story that I don't want to give away any of it. But someone from the past predicted Jemma would find love and it would start off with a bang. 💗 She also gets some suspicious advise from one of the older tennant's in the building that makes me think she knows something about the magic in the building real or not. I will be recommending this book and absolutely can't wait to read more.
A generous 2 This one wasn’t for me. I thought the original premise from the first few chapters had potential but then it was mentioned one other time before the epilogue ??? (vague in case it’s a spoiler) Every plot point was very predictable Oliver was a pig and Jemma was an immature airhead Maybe it’s a 1.5 now that I can’t think of a redeeming quality LOL Good news is my reading year can quite literally only go up from here 😅
She fulfilled every mother's dream! She got herself a doctor boyfriend... So she had to shoot him for them to meet, that was a total accident! Jemma finds a letter in her new apartment promising the love of her life soon but as the author said - magic can get you only so far...after that you need to help yourself, hhh This book was such a joyful surprise. The characters, Ollie's secret in the 2/3 breakup making sense, their love charming although their forced proximity a little... Forced but hey, nobody's perfect.
Super cute rom-com. I cackled a few times and honestly made me 5 star it immediately. It’s exactly the book I needed right now. The writing is enjoyable and I look forward to read more about the author!
Hit or Miss is my first time reading this author and let me tell you I am certainly a fan girl ! Are you ready for a laugh out loud, fun, steamy read ...then look no further! Jemma is a third grade teacher that could use to blow off a bit of steam so she decides to head to the gun range and practice target shooting. Let's start by saying she is not a good aim and easily distracted ...LoL . Oliver Kincaid a.k.a Ollie or Dr. McHottie is a pediatric cardiac specialist and he is just looking to enjoy some time off at the range. This is a crazy meet cute. When a stray bullet hits the handsome Ollie in the leg Jemma decides to become his driver and all around gopher. This couple is sweet, funny, have wonderful witty banter and a crazy chemistry that they soon can't deny! Loved them and their great group of friends. ~~Michele McMullen ~~
The meet-cute of Jemma & Oliver's is very innovative and funny. Yes, there is an age gap between our two main characters, but love is blind and doesn't consider age. Hit or Miss will make a great rom-com movie. There were so many laugh-out-loud moments throughout the book. The banter was to the point. Jemma's roommates are funny, and I look forward to reading Fiona & Keane's love story. Nick, Olie's best friend, is something unexpected, but simultaneously, he says things to Oliver that open his eyes. Yes, it is my first Everly Ashton's book, but currently won't be the last one.
June 9, 2024: Hit or Miss is a reread for me, and I will never forget the meet & cute between Jema & Ollie. Yes, our main characters have a ten-year age gap, but it is not a big deal when one is in the late twenties and the other is in the late thirties—Ollie and Jema have so many in common and, first of all, the love for children. I love books that are lighthearted, humorous, and steamy romantic comedies that crave a heartwarming love story with a dash of whimsy and a guaranteed happy conclusion. Now that I have reread the book, it is time to continue with the series, laugh some more with the other characters, and hopefully see some glimpses of Jema and Ollie.
