Lyla has been born with a gift and when she raises her brother from the dead after a car accident she attracts the interest of a demon but instead of killing her, she finds herself striking a deal one which means she will get to still live and also gain some limited Protection from others of his kind. All she has to do is let him feed from her taking small regular bites instead of being an all you can eat buffet. But after meeting others with magical abilities Lyra now finds herself calling on Melekai’s help there’s a psychotic demon on the loose and Lyra is now because of her new magical friends on its radar.
So I did enjoy some of this mostly the bits with Melekai and Lyla connecting and less the magic practice stuff which could get confusing at times. I also had slight issues, I found it slightly repetitive in places and it seemed to loop through various similar scenarios like we were replaying the exact same moments with only slight variations to set them apart. There were limited locations mostly the house the woods the car and headquarters then it rinsed and repeated because of this I did lose focus becoming disinterested at times.
There was also a lack of integral secondary characters with this one only six which could get a tad repetitive and they also could have been fleshed out a little better than they were. Also, more explanations regarding the demon Terese and her current situation would have been good, I mean what were her exact goals here? It was never really explained to my satisfaction. And more explanations in relation to Melekai and his world and origins were warranted this wasn’t really touched on which I do think was a missed opportunity. Where did he come from? His experiences and long life none of this was really mentioned at all. I also found the finish with this was very abrupt indeed and for me needed expanding on.
Now that’s out the way I can crack on with what I did like so despite the above I did find this imaginative and the writing itself was good. I liked the idea of a necromancer and I liked Lyla as a person. Melekai her demon I also took to though I don’t think I connected with him fully and never really got a real sense of him as an individual. The relationship that developed between Lyra and Melekai was actually quite sweet and this one wasn’t a dark read at all. As a villain, Melekai is only on the baby scale and he really was quite the sweetheart.
As a couple they did work but I think the focus on what was happening around them overtook everything and then had an impact on the romantic connection which suffered as a result. I’m not fully convinced of there overall connection either they never really discussed there relationship and expectations in any real depth and this lack of transparency worked against them, As a couple, they just felt a bit flat and uninspiring.
This for me did have both positives and negatives, I enjoyed it somewhat but there was also something slightly missing for me as well. Overall this did have some good ideas and was creative but this one, unfortunately, wasn’t quite for me. I voluntary reviewed a copy of The Girl who brings the dead.
This was a completely random find on kindle unlimited and I loved it! I’m a sucker for necromancer stories, and demons, and magic, and romance. There are a few little odd words or mistakes- mostly in the first few pages, but it’s otherwise well-written and characters are fleshed out.
I really enjoyed Lyra & Mel's relationship dynamic. The world building is interesting and I'm curious to get around to the other books in the series. It did leave me with some more questions than answers but I guess that's because it's a 6 book series.
Regardless, read this ASAP if you want a Necromancer, Demon Drama and a cool magic system!
I thought this was going to be a lot better than it was because the description was so cool. Felt let down. Turned into a weird thing and a happily ever after. Meh.
This could’ve been a good book, but the writing is a bit too obnoxious for me. It’s written in third person, there’s little chunks of backstory, but not much… so it leaves you wondering so many things.
There’s some parts that make almost no sense. Like why is a woman that keeps to herself jumping in a car with people she has met like twice and she doesn’t know where she’s going? Then she notices them both in pain. One has a broken wrist, the other is bleeding, but she just sits there like “ehh whatevs” without asking any questions…
It was a bit repetitive with the sentences as well. One thing would be stated, then it would be stated again, directly after, in another way.
Then we get to where two people are intimate. Which okay, I’m cool with this. BUT all I could think was “she’s literally having sex with a dead body….” And it really turned me off of the book. Maybe others are down with this, but knowing she can feel every single thing wrong with this body and knows it’s been dead for weeks… it grossed me out.
Ok so the core story of this book is good. This idea that an untrained necromancer becomes tied to a demon and embroiled in a magical fight when other magicians find out who she is. I liked the core characters of Lyra and Makahai
But the writing was strange- it’s like the character conversations didn’t connect, questions were not answered, obvious issues ignored, comments seemingly popped in randomly, like everyone was in their own head and the author was afraid to be to obvious about the story and so diverted and obfuscated details that would of helped the story along. It got very frustrating and there are still a ton of loose ends and unanswered questions.
Maybe the answered are in the next book- but I am not sure I trust the writing of the author enough.
Oh and what is up with the cover art- Why doesn’t Lyra have eyes?? It’s creepy
This story had my complete attention from the very first page and never stopped. Lyra is an unwitting, untrained necromancer that catches the eye of a demon. Against his nature Melechai decides to syphon her life giving energy very slowly, rather than all at once. The bond and relationship is forged. There is so much more to this story that you will just have to discover on your own.
I am voluntarily reviewing this novel after receiving a free copy. Actual rating: 4.25 stars
This was a good read! I enjoyed the time I spent with these characters, both main- and side-. Lyra was a likable protagonist, and easy to root for. Not only does she have the usual trauma that a main character carries, but she also has a really strong, loving relationship with her brother uncomplicated by poor communication/jealousy/etc. that you so often see. They just have a sweet love for each other, and that was nice.
Mel was an interesting character, too. I found their dynamic really appealing, with him being sort of possessive/protective and her pushing back more over the course of the story as she came to understand herself better (and of course all the hand-touching stuff was super cute). I wish we knew more about his feelings/backstory - we never really get the infodump you're kinda led to expect, and I would like to know why the relationship moved the way it did.
Their relationship was also a little confusing for me at times - I think at about the halfway point or so I was like "wasn't this supposed to be a romance? this all feels very platonic" and then suddenly there's a sharp swerve and they end up going there. It wasn't poorly executed or anything, but the build-up did seem weirdly disjointed.
I loved the magic system (or what we see of it). It was a good choice to have Lyra as a beginner, so we can learn alongside her, and to have both Mel and some of the secondary characters around to show her their own flavor of magic. All of that stuff was a good time.
Terese was an interesting villain, mainly because we can feel some element of sympathy for her, and curiosity about what happened. Unfortunately, we don't really get any answers there, either.
That brings me to my main complaint - a lot of things feel unfinished/unresolved by the end. What was Terese's deal? How was she connected to the Dr.? Why did Mel end up so attached/attracted to Lyra vs the usual food source thing, and what does what happened to him at the end mean for him in the future? Unfortunately, from the blurb of the next book, it sounds like Lyra/Mel won't be the focus, which is disappointing. Again, I liked the other characters, but I'm not as attached/interested in them, and would definitely prefer more of this couple vs following someone else. It also seems unlikely we'll get satisfying answers to some of our dangling questions with the POV-shift. But I suppose that remains to be seen.
Overall, though, this was fun. Strong characters, fun development, and an interesting villain to contend with. I'd recommend it for fans of the urban fantasy/romance genre, and I'm cautiously interested in what the sequel holds.
Rcvd an advanced reader copy for giving my two cents. Whoa...this book took me a while to get into...not for thr lack of interest but there was so much detail to keep track of. We meet Lyra, who as a child, made a dead animal feel better and her mother being very upset that she told her never to do that again. Except Lyra did...to save her brother then boom....a demon comes for her. He saw something in Lyra that he kept her alive and comes every so often to "feed" off of her. Lyras brother is in law school while she lives in a run down inherited trailer. While visiting Jackson, she spots an unusual man staring at her and then he shows up at her work telling her he is magical of sorts and they may need her help. Lyra doesn't know what to think. She knows her demon, Mal, comes by every so often but lately he is around more because of these new people she hangs out with. There is so much to learn but Lyra is having trouble trusting these new people...are they friend or foe? Lots of drama, death, destruction and finding out about oneself makes it a riveting read.
"She’s her mother’s daughter, and her mother taught her to shoot when she turned twelve, but soda cans on a fence are a hell of a lot easier than this, with every bone in her body trembling with exhaustion, on uneven tile, with light and wind and swirling snow, but Mr. Peters keeps the gun loaded with birdshot, and when she squeezes the trigger the shot goes wide, but the birdshot strafes Terese, drawing bloody lines across her shoulder, and the wind and light abruptly stop as she gasps, colorless eyes wide." - Lyra
Imagine, if you will... A power so dark, so rare, it only exists for a breath and is gone... A power so coveted by demons it's almost instantaneously snuffed out when discovered... And yet... One demon finds a way to not destroy that which he covets. At least, not yet...
A dark and gritty twisted romance unlike any other, The Girl Who Brings The Dead will have an impact on you, willing or not....
We have a girl who raised her brother from the dead after a car accident. It seems she may have broken some rules when she saved her brother and now is owned by a Demon. He wanted to kill her out right but the struck a deal. The deal: She could live, and he could feed off her soul whenever he felt like it! Two magicians had also heard about her gift, and they believe that she may be the one to save the world. Now because the magicians have spread the word about her gifts a very evil demon is out to get her. She finds the need to go back and ask her demon for help. So much for her desire to take her brother and retreat to some place in the country for quiet and solitude. I really enjoyed this novel. I found the story line to be solid and the characters well fleshed out. I can't wait to get into the next book in the trilogy!
Lyra is a necromancer taught by her mother to hide her powers and not use them, but when she has to use them to save her brother and that bursts of power summons a demon things become.. complicated to say the least! A really interesting read, the premise is great and I feel the relationships between Lyra and Melekai and also Lyra and her brother were very well developed and lacked the usual miscommunication tropes that drive me crazy. Plot was fantastic and kept me hooked so much I read the full thing in one sitting. The only draw back for me is a lack of backstory and the characters didn’t all feel as fleshed out as I’d like. We get almost no backstory about Mel and his life prior to meeting Lyra which I feel could have made this a 5* for me. Overall a fun, dark fantasy romance read that I’d recommend to anyone interested in the genre.
What. Great. Fun! And I loved Lyra right from the get go. Lyra knew she was different by the time she was 6 when she raised a dead field mouse and it scampered off. It scared her mom not because of something once dead was alive again but because she knew that it would draw the attention of the demons. And a Demon would be able to find a kill Lyra because of her magic, her soul (prolly a misnomer). So Lyra didn't practice her magic, that is until her little brother died and she had to save him right. Right! Now she had a demon to deal with!!! And also that there was a whole magical world reality that she was clueless about. But first the Demon Melekai. So go get the book and forget your preconceived notions about necromancers and demons enjoy...
I enjoyed the storyline and the female lead, Lyra, a necromancer. Demons seek Lyra out when she raises the dead, so she was taught not to use her power. But in an emergency, she raised the dead and attracted a powerful demon. The demon decided to keep her, but pretty much let her live her life. Trouble brews when a man and a woman with magical abilities find her and ask for help. Therein starts a really good storyline. I did enjoy the book but the pace was slow. The book had a great ending, but not every question I had was answered. Seems those issues will be taken up in book 2, in which the lead will be the woman with magical abilities.
I liked the idea of this book. The story was different and held promise, but it failed in a couple of areas. Lyra, the main character, had no real ties with anyone apart from her brother or the demon. The other connections were forced by circumstance, and she was isolated from the world. Her lack of knowledge about magic and demons was dangerous, yet Melekai did not enlighten her to keep her safe, although he said that was his main objective. The story felt stilted at times and did not flow well. Even the magicians felt one dimensional, and although I did read to the end, I will not be continuing the series.
I didn't love this book, but I didn't dislike either... It's left me feeling ambivalent. I have no interest in reading more of this series, and that's a shame. I'm thinking it's the editing that's my issue. At times it reads like it's from the characters perspective, at others it's from the third person... It's a little jarring. The thing is the writing is decent, the story has great potential, but the 1st to 3rd person shift in the same paragraph makes it feel disjointed and juvenile at times. It's a shame.....
This review is more of a reminder to myself when I inevitably see this book again in a year, think it sounds good, forget that I read it, and pick it up again.
Good grief, this was TEDIOUS. There was so much filler, so many repeated things, and sometimes it just didn't make sense. Lyra, for being a necromancer, was a complete snooze of a main character. Melekai was a boring demon. Everyone just seemed to be wandering around and getting hurt for nothing. Zzzzz....
So, self, when you see this book again - please remember not to read it.
I really liked this book. The third person writing geared toward the “limited” type of 3rd person and it took me a bit to get used to it as most I read are in first person. The necromantic concept Ms.Winters weaves is new to what I’ve already known about necromancers from other sources. To put short, I like the spin. More scientific, believable. I would have liked a bit more character description here and there, but was easily able to fill in the blanks myself. I’m on to the next book in this series- “The Girl Who Has Already Died”, hoping to get the same touchy feels I got from this one.
The premise was vaguely interesting but the relationship didn't make sense, the big bad didn't make sense, the world building was very unclear and it needed proofing.
I borrowed this as part of a "boxset" on KU but the author seemed to forget that you need to actually wrap up some plot points and make the reader want to read the next book, not just stop and swap heroines. I don't think I'll continue with the series.
I had a hard time getting into this book. You know the books that drive you crazy because no one asks the obvious questions? Or any questions at all? Yep, that’s what this book was like for me. It was an interesting story and I’m glad I stuck it out and finished it. But I’m unsure yet if I’ll continue the series. Give it a try though! You might like it more than I did.
I absolutely adored this book!! Lyra is a necromancer and Melechai is the demon who feeds off of her. They should be enemies. They kind of are and kind of arent. The world the author creates is fascinating. There is magic, danger, love and humor. All the characters are great. I couldnt put this book down and I cant wait for the next one in the series!!!
Dark, strange, otherworldly and absolutely captivating! This is first book by this author that I have read and i loved it. I can't wait to read more from her. If you are into the supernatural, I suggest you read this book. You won't put it down!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Girl Who Brings the Dead by Alessa Winters is a story to read. I loved reading this story and once I picked it up I could not put it down till I was all they way done with it. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about horror, dark and paranormal romance.

I’ve been struggling to find a good serious to read. I’ve started four different ones, only to stop 3/4 the way through the first book. All boring and the same old story line. This one is different, so I will definitely be moving on to the next one. Well done Alyssa Winters.
There is so much going on with her. I feel bad for her because of the mom and not knowing about her powers. This whole situation must suck. The demon is really interesting. I believe he really cares and that was for me what kept me interested. I wanted to see how the relationship developed and if he truly cares.
I enjoyed the premise and most of the story. The only thing I think it needed was more character for the main character. She was a lot like the protagonist in a popular teenage vampire series- I couldn't even visualize her or get a sense of who she was apart from the minor thoughts she had of her family and her body.
I was actually really excited to read this book because it sounded really good, and started off strong, but about a quarter of the way through, it felt like the plot was jumping around way too much. I pushed to the halfway point, but it felt like it was droning on and it just didn't keep my attention anymore.
I hate to sound mean but the writing was absolutely atrocious. The worst I can remember ever reading and I’ve read an exorbitant amount of books in my 31 years. The concept could have been really great but it was so slow and boring coupled with trying to to get past the awful writing I couldn’t get past 60%.
