He followed me. He broke my peace, and I embraced the noise. He tore apart all I believed about myself, and I reveled in the chaos. He brought me back to life. His promise remains with me, even now. Wherever you are, I am.
It began with the sensation of being watched. I thought it was my imagination or a bit of paranoia. After all, I'm not accustomed to living in the woods and my job as a true crime author makes me hypervigilant. Even the first time he called my name, I convinced myself it was only the wind. Until now. The man standing uninvited in my home is beautiful in a way that’s almost awful to look at and impossible to ignore. His intense gaze tears through me while his impassive expression gives nothing away. This should be terrifying. It is, and yet it enlivens me. He rouses something in me that's long been dormant. A desire for life. And for him.

"You're going to come over here and sit on my cock. If you take it all, I won't put it in your ass."

OVER. IT. ALSO...when I shared this cover in a couple weeks ago I said "THIS IS THE BOOK BOYFRIEND LOOKS LIKE HE FUCKS DIRTY!" WELL, I CAN TELL YOU, I WAS RIGHT! 😏🥵🤤 One of my favourite stories of the YEAR and an absolute MUST read if you enjoy stories that fuck with your feelings, leave you questioning your morals and asking yourself what the bloody hell did I just read?!"
The Dark of You, a standalone dark romance by S.M. Shade is LIVE!
'THE DARK OF YOU' Is a stand-alone dark romance novel by new to me author S.M. Shade
Tip toe into this, it’ll take you to places you won’t be prepared for, you'll face twists and turns more times than once, which will leave you reeling in their wake.
The ending will have you gasping in shock and disbelief. This was such an unusual unique story which pulled me in from the very first chapter.
Even though I kind of guessed somewhat of the plot I still got swept up in this unputdownable story.
The start to Darcy's story will hit you as soon as you start reading, and it's that point where her life changed dramatically and was the catalyst for so many things in her life, from a seemingly happy childhood to one in the system moved around from home to home. It's during these early years where she started to channel her thoughts onto paper. As she got older she became a very successful true crime & horror novelist.
Hitting a roadblock in her writing career she buys a place out in the country on the edge of a small town, no neighbours and surrounded by nature. It's not long when she feels a presence watching her, following her, always in the shadows. It's here where she starts to wonder if she's got a stalker.
And this is where I'm going to stop my review. You need to go in blind from this point onwards. I don't want to wreck this story. Definitely recommend a one-click release day!!
I'm a sucker for stalker romance, and when I saw S. M. Shade was releasing one, I knew I had to read it! I've only read one other book from her, and it was cowritten by C. M. Owens. Let's just say, it made a huge impression on me! If you want to laugh your ass off, go grab Worth It right now. You won't be disappointed!
Moving on!
Darcy's entire family was murdered in their home when she was just a child, and she's the only one the killer left standing. Given her past, when she discovers a stranger watching her, I expect her to freak the fuck out, but that's not what happens. Darcy likes being watched. She hopes her stalker will confront her. It was about this time that I began to question Darcy's common sense and overall intelligence level. However, I'm a crazy bitch too, so naturally, I wanted her to get with the stalker! It made it easier for me to suspend my disbelief, and I think anyone reading this type of book has to be able to do that.
The Dark of You is steamy, suspenseful, captivating, and twisty. The author's writing style makes it extremely easy to fall into the story. The characters were interesting, and the story was thrilling. The downside for me was I guessed something very early on, and the whole time after I read with my suspicion in mind. It took me somewhat out of the story once I got the idea in my head, so it wasn't as impactful and shocking as it should have been. I know it was for a lot of people though, and I totally see why.
I honestly don't think it's the author fault I figured it out. I think it's mainly do to other books I've read in the past. Had I read this first, I think things would have turned out differently.
If you're a fan of dark, stalker romance, this one's for you!
Well this was something… I had this idea of what this story was going to be about and I got a reality check early on. The Dark Of You is a mystery that will be shrouded in heartbreak, loss and disbelief. Though filled with some dark elements, this will be one of these stories that days after you finish reading it, you still won't know how to make sense of it.
Darcy has been through the ringer through out her childhood. From one tragedy to unfortunate events after the next, this girl has been fighting most of her life and it has only made her stronger. From pain comes beauty and in Darcy's case, a best selling mystery writer. But when a real life mystery man starts appearing in her life, things become more interesting for this single writer.
I really enjoyed the writing for this story and seeing that this was my first read from this author, I liked how it flowed. I also loved the female heroine and seeing her not only in the present, but the past as well. We witnessed the innocence, saw the bravery, and felt the sorrow for all that was lost and could've been.
As much as I did like most of the story, I also had a few issues with it and the main one was that I saw the plot twist from a mile away. I was hoping that I was wrong but as I got further into the story, I knew that wasn't going to be the case. Certain things felt like unfinished business to me and I wanted to see them play out more instead of that leading up to an ending which was not shocking to me.
If you're new to this author, I think that this one is worth a try and you'll get to dip your toes into a little dark mystery romance.
After obsessing over Shade's masterful comedic talents, I couldn't wait to dive into the darker side of her mind.
From the very first chapter I was sucked into this harrowing, psychological tale that kept me guessing and stole my breath. S.M. Shade is a true wordsmith, her writing style versatile and compelling.
Honestly, she could write about the anatomy of brussel sprouts, and I'd read the hell out of it.
This book has a fabulous writing style, and I absolutely loved the heroine. She’s a horror/true crime writer in her thirties, (just like me!), and her depression was depicted in a raw and visceral way that was heartbreaking. Unfortunately, I saw the major twist coming from the very beginning of the book. Normally, that wouldn’t bother me much since this is a romance novel, but this particular twist completely changed how I interpreted and enjoyed the story. The author was a little too heavy-handed with the clues. Also, the twist really annoyed me a lot. The twist is under the spoiler tag. Despite my irritation with this major twist, I did love the protagonist and the writing style. Even the atmosphere of the book was just the right amount of spooky, and it made me want to move to a house in the middle of the woods. Maybe then I’ll be able to get some writing done. Three stars because the twist wasn’t for me, but I definitely want to check out more by this author in the future.
I went in blind well kinda, I did see some comments on fb that the book was a mindfuck with lots of twists and turns you won’t see coming but sadly I did most of it. I still enjoyed parts of the book. The writing was good, the prologue was great, the first few chapters were slightly dragging but it picked up soon after. It was engaging, I finished this quickly and also because I wanted to know whether my suspicions were correct. I wished I got my mind blown like many others. I wished for more romance. I wished I could hug Darcy, she had a rough childhood and didn’t always have an easy life. I wished there was an epilogue. But you don’t always get what you wish for.

WHAT DID I JUST READ? My mind is still reeling from this one! What a wild ride! One thing I know for sure is this was one of the BEST BOOKS I've read all year! Also, this review will be the shortest I've ever written!
Do you enjoy dark romance? Twisted plots and secrets galore? READ THIS BOOK! GO IN BLIND! DO NOT READ ANY SPOILERS! So be careful reading reviews.... some people don't care if they spoil it for you!
The entire book, my mind was bouncing...I couldn't get it to shut up about what it thought was happening so I could just read the words! Not just that, this book also contained some of the hottest scenes I've ever read! I'm still lusting over this fictional character! You will want to read faster because your mind will be exploding with theories! BUT make sure that you do READ EVERY SINGLE WORD! Don't skip pages or words! You will miss something!
Oh, I'm definitely on the fence about this one. While the story was phenomenal in some ways, it also left me wanting in others. I love the author's writing style. She truly understands how to bring the reader into the mind of the character and make you feel all the emotions flowing through them. She's heavy on the show not tell and I'm a huge fan of that. Also, the story was very well organized and executed.
BUT, I also feel duped. It's hard to explain this part without giving anything away. I'll just say I opted to read this book because I thought I was getting one thing (which the blurb led me to believe), but got a whole other type of story. I've read similar stories in the past so I think that is what helped me see the ending coming. It was also light on the romance. While I did appreciate the "hero's" dirty talk, it was few and far between. This is definitely more of a story-driven book.
When the story was over I felt unfulfilled. It felt like there were questions left unanswered. It was abrupt and odd. Maybe it was left that way so the reader could determine on their own where the story went from there. I don't know, but it just left me frustrated. I'm sure for someone that hasn't read this type of story before it's a delicious mindf*ck but for me, it just left me wanting.
I encourage everyone interested to read it and make up their own mind. It was well done, just not what I was hoping for.
I can sum up this book in one sentence: YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKIN' KIDDING ME!!!!!
OK, so I went into this book blind (except for the blurb), and I honestly don't want to say ANYTHING about it, because you need to do the same. NOTHING. I want to give nothing away about the plot, the characters, none of it. Trust me, you don't want any spoilers.
So, I'll just say this...
Chapter 1 is like a punch to the gut.
I was feeling pretty cocky that I had this story figured out early on, but I had no idea the ride that I was in for.
I was horrified, turned on, and caused to question my moral compass (which once again, I've decided is a bit broken).
I held my breath, gasped for air, and my jaw hit the floor.
And as I closed the book, I went stomping off to find my husband, screaming "You won't believe this!" He didn't believe it, because he didn't care and had no idea what I was talking about, but I HAD TO RANT AND RAVE TO SOMEBODY!!!!
INCREDIBLE. Absolutely incredible storytelling. The Dark of You is DARK, and it's twisted, and it's oh so good. This is the first book that I've read by S.M. Shade, so I'm not sure if all of her books are like this, but I'm about to find out.
“He broke my peace, and I embraced the noise. He tore apart all I believed about myself, and I reveled in the chaos.”
This new to me author brought the chaos and I loved it. I was pulled in from page one and couldn’t put it down. Reeve is a mysterious alpha stalker that pushes Darcy into the darkness he knows she needs. Darcy is struggling to find herself while dealing with past trauma. The plot weaves in flashback scenes perfectly and gives more depth to the plot and characters. And with the addition of the steamy and thrilling scenes the pace is perfect. Go in blind and enjoy the twists and chaos that will have you on edge.
Dark contemporary. Triggers. Standalone. Single POV h
* How did the book make you feel?: This book was dark. I wouldn’t consider it a romance, but more like a psychological thriller.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: We are in Darcy’s head the whole time. She has a heartbreaking backstory and she has a lot of interesting coping mechanisms. The H is shrouded in mystery throughout the book.
* What did you think about the main characters?: I liked Darcy and was rooting for her. She had such a rough go of things that she deserved happiness.
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: I guessed the twist in the end early on. I was a little disappointed, but the book was still riveting and well-written.
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: falling in love with a stalker, mental illness and surviving trauma
* What did you think about the ending?: I had guessed it to a large degree. The author did a good job deflecting and distracting. If anything, it made me sad because it certainly wasn’t a HEA.
* What is your impression of the author?: Loads of talent and I’m wondering if they’ve authored anything else a bit more uplifting.
Possible Triggers and Safety: graphic depictions of physical and sexual violence, child abuse

A complete masterpiece, that will leave readers speechless. The Dark of You is complete with jaw dropping twists and turns, moments where you just dont know how to pick your jaw up off the floor. I am in complete amazement for the way Shade crafted this story, and how this story unfolded. I did not want this ride to end!
There were points in this story where I thought I was going crazy. Moments I had to go back and read again to be sure I wasn't going crazy. It's dark. Its bloody. Its insanely addicting. It's one of those books it needs to be read again and again.
Shade truly let her craft shine. Brava lady, BRAVA!!
”He’s the fire that brought me light, but there are two sides to every flame. Burn and shine. I have no regrets. For every moment he’s illuminated my world, I’ll happily collapse to ash with him.”
This was my first book by Shade and definitely won’t be the last, especially if she writes more dark books!! Although I did figure out what was happening behind the scenes pretty early on, it wasn’t because Shade gave anything away. If I hadn’t read a book where something similar happened, I don’t think I ever would’ve guessed what was going on! And even though I did know how the story would end, I still couldn’t put it down!!! Dark, incredibly well-written, suspenseful, sexy - this book has it all!
I knew it. And even though I knew it, I still liked it. This book turned creepy real quick and I definitely recommend to people just starting to dip their toes into dark romance.
I was so engrossed by this story right away- the turmoil, despair, loneliness and darkness this book gave to it's main character, Darcy, was a heavy weight on her soul. She pulled herself up and through so much heartbreak, bullying and abuse in her teen years that I wondered, how much more could she take and how long could she go one this way?? I could feel her pain like it was my own sometimes.
Then, when things started to look up, strange though her situation seemed to be, she was happy and I was so happy for her to finally find some comfort and pleasure to look forward to. Twists, turns, suspense, fear, worry for her and her happiness and then...BAM!!! WTH did I just read????
Well, I have to leave you with that...this really should be a go in blind kind of book. There are elements here that warrant personal discovery. I thought I had the twists all figured out but NO I did NOT...nope! I hope other readers don't spoil any plots here..that would be such a crime!
CW/TW: There are a couple of suicide attempts and thinking about it.
I don't 100% know how I feel about this, even a little over a week later, I'm still conflicted. The writing was great, I enjoyed the characters story, I enjoyed seeing the heroine build herself up, fall, then build herself up again. But did I like the explanation/twist of the end? I don't know. I love that the author gave readers something different but I just don't know how I feel about it.
Darcy has not had the easiest early life. Her family was massacred, she is the only left alive. She's put into the foster system and has more heart breaking and tragic moments. Now she's an adult, a recluse, and a famous crime writer. She also has a stalker.
One issue I had, was that the author uses the term "family annihilator" to describe the guy who committed the crime of killing her family. We know from the beginning that this guy is the babysitter of Darcy and her younger brother, and he wasn't related to the family at all. Family Annihilator's are (in the research I've done and all the true crime I watch/listen to) people who kill their own families, not someone else's. That really bothered me. Now I could be wrong, maybe that label can also be used for someone who kills someone else's family but I've never heard that.
I also hated Darcy's "friend". Instead of going to see your friend and see if she's ok because you haven't been able to get in contact with her or she's been distracted, you
I will read this author again. I enjoyed the writing, I just hope I enjoy the ending of the next one better.
Genre: Romantic Thriller Type: Standalone POV: First Person - Female Rating:
Darcy Sharpe experienced violence and heartbreak at a young age. She channeled her past through her writing and became a successful horror and true crime author. Moving away from the city was what she desperately needed but her solitude was short-lived when Reeve had his eyes on her.
I loved this book even though I figured everything out right from the beginning. I was drawn to the story and enjoyed the tidbits from the past timeline.
No matter who he is or what he’s done, I’m not giving him up. Why should I walk away my days when I could dance along the sharp edges of life with him?
Darcy had a hard life, so her view on it was understandable. Reeve was dark and mysterious, and I loved his role in her life. Their sexy scenes were deliciously scorching.
The Dark if You is a story of survival and adaptability. It would appeal to readers who enjoy dark and sexy, romantic thriller.

Very good writing, 5 stars actually. But I’m not a fan of this trope, hence the 3 stars I’m giving it.
I did suspect it from early on how this would play but I wasn’t 100% sure until I hit the 80sh% mark.
This is a standalone but it feels like it’s not really complete bc it it’s really what she was told then, yes, it’s very much completed. But if it’s not really that we are left wondering and the one the reason as to why that happened to her parents. Either way I can’t see her coming back.
I can’t really write more bc it will give major spoilers.
But take a gander and read it. Be the judge, let me know your thoughts. This is definitely one of those books that you can discuss for a long time.
NOOO!!! Why? How? What? Ugh, what can I say other than what a deliciously great read filled with twist and turns I didn’t expect. That’s all I can say for now. I’ll be back with a review when I’m done processing 🤣
Don't read reviews. Go blind. That's how you will get the best reading experience out of The Dark of You by S.M. Shade. Let yourself get blindsided with the darkness, the troubled twists and the shocking turns. Let your mind wander to a place where you question your sanity and salute the author's creative genius. Let yourself lose your mind in the maze of tainted secrets, sinful fantasies and mind bending emotional wounds.
Darcy Sharpe, sole survivor of family annihilation ( a killer killed everyone else) has been living a secluded life in her home in forest and having a successful career as a horror mystery writer. Then she starts noticing someone is watching him. Out of the blue came Reeve. The bossy, controlling, dirty mouthed man who demands her body and soul. He makes her happy, reckless, alive again..But who is he? The answer will not be pretty or simple. The answer will shatter whatever left of her darkness.
The story is told from Darcy's POV. This is essentially her own journey. She has suffered that debilitating trauma and then fought her way through the foster system. She is lonely. Sad. Anxious. Her mind goes to very hopeless places. And she has a writing block. No inspiration to write. Then comes Reeve. And she hasn't felt so alive for a long time. It is wrong, it is morally questionable but she cannot find it in her to feel guilt and shame. As a reader ( and a Psychiatrist), I was trying to understand why she feels so obsessed with him. Or dependent on him. And the author took me through the complex place. They had an intense connection that's not explainable but irresistible and undeniable. Reeve brought out that bold fierce part hidden inside Darcy. He is edgy, violent, careless of consequences and so wickedly attractive. But it's too good to be true..right? The author will rip your heart out and you will be left screaming cursing mess. You will never see that coming( or maybe you will). The story was set in a fast paced taut line and you will be swinging from one extreme emotion to others. And end with jaw hitting floor...
The Dark of You by SM Shade is one of the greatest mindfck book I have read in a long long time. Kudos to the author for this unorthodox romance with addictive dose of psychological thriller.
First, i don’t know what it says that his quote resonated so strongly with me. Nor am I going to examine that too deeply today. I literally don’t know what to tell you about this book, other than that I read it, in one sitting. Actually, I devoured this book in mere hours, only taking a small break to chat with the friend that recommended it to me. Otherwise, I ignored everything. My husband, the kids, the pets, the chores, the AMAZON guy, my phone, the whole world honestly. And now that I’ve finished, I only wish that I could unread and read for the first time all over again. I was on my toes the whole time, trying to figure it all out, and kicking my own butt for not being Nancy Drew. Don’t come to me for a solved mystery, because when I tell you I was stunned, I do not joke. STUNNED. This was absolutely INCREDIBLE and EVERYONE needs to read it.
I'm sitting here trying to think of something to say. It's A well written and interesting story that's super 🔥🔥🔥. That's all I've got. Read at your own peril and prepare for your mind to be blown. You think you know what's going to happen. Its not. This is not a romance, its a fantastically written mindf√€k.
Darcy is a mystery writer living in a cabin in the woods. Her family was murdered and she's the only one left alive. She meets Reeve and he's the ultimate bad boy, dirty talking, filthy sex guy. This story has so many twists and turns. Go in with no expectations and you will have a better experience.
