L'estetica dell'intelligenza artificiale. Modelli digitali e analitica culturale

Rate this book
Modelli digitali e analitica culturale.

L'intelligenza artificiale svolge una funzione cruciale nell'ecosistema culturale globale. Consiglia ciò che dovremmo vedere, ascoltare, leggere e acquistare. Decide quante persone vedranno i nostri contenuti condivisi.

Lev Manovich is an artist, an author and a theorist of digital culture. He is a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Manovich played a key role in creating four new research fields: new media studies (1991-), software studies (2001-), cultural analytics (2007-) and AI aesthetics (2018-). Manovich's current research focuses on generative media, AI culture, digital art, and media theory.
Manovich is the founder and director of the Cultural Analytics Lab (called Software Studies Initiative 2007-2016), which pioneered use of data science and data visualization for the analysis of massive collections of images and video (cultural analytics). The lab was commissioned to create visualizations of cultural datasets for Google, New York Public Library, and New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
He is the author and editor of 15 books including The Language of New Media that has been translated into fourteen languages. Manovich's latest academic book Cultural Analytics was published in 2020 by the MIT Press.

Should’ve been an essay somewhere on Wired. A few interesting takes on AI, but as an introduction to computational vision of culture it’s weak. Aside of small sneak peak of authors own AI tool, it doesn’t provide any further information of how a reader could investigate this topic.

If you interested in the topic of Vision, culture and perception, I’d rather recommend:
Nicholas Mirzoeff - how to see the world.
Yet it less lean on actual tech as AI and comp Vision, it’s provide a deeper theoretical base on this topic.

Artificial Aesthetics looks at what happens to art and aesthetics when AI can analyze style, generate images, and predict taste. It asks whether creativity is truly original or largely recombinatory, whether style is reducible to pattern, and what authorship means in generative systems.

The topic is undeniably important. However, much of the argument felt conceptually familiar. The idea that style has structure, that creativity involves recombination, or that taste can be statistically analyzed predates AI. What the book shows well is how AI makes these dynamics operational at scale — but the underlying theoretical claims didn’t feel especially surprising.

It reads more as a careful mapping of the terrain than as a bold intervention. Useful and clarifying, though not particularly revelatory.

““AI effect.” It means that “when we know how a machine does something ‘intelligent,’ it ceases to be regarded as intelligent” (Promise of AI Not So Bright, 2006).”
