Mystics are Murder

Rate this book
What do you do when your star murder witness only speaks ‘Meow?’ Who could predict it would happen again? Morgan Hart didn’t expect her first day as police captain of Bijoux, Michigan, the sleepy lakeside town where she grew up, would include a murder, even though that’s just what happened. But with the killer behind bars, Morgan can take a breath and start painting her cozy cottage. Or so she hopes. When a fortune-telling mystic is found dead at Bijoux’s Walk into the Light Psychic Gathering, Morgan and her deputy, JJ Jones, are called in to investigate. The trouble is Morgan’s only witness is Griselda, a black cat with blood on her paws. While every psychic in town claims to know what the cat ‘knows,’ Morgan relies on her own instincts to sniff out the suspects while dodging her conflicting feelings for local bookshop owner and town hunk, Caleb Joseph. And with her dad, Able’s, upcoming wedding to Zoe Buffet, Bijoux’s most famous clairvoyant and coffee cake queen, Morgan is under the gun to figure out which mystic is the murderer before the couple says I do.

Another cute book. Easy to read. It can stand alone; that is, it doesn't have to be read in order in this series. Where it fell short for me was the distinct similarity in plot to the first book. Different ''event" taking place in Bijoux, but essentially the same plot. Same characters. Same banter. Kind of turned me off a bit. That said, I kept reading.

I'm kind of impatient for the Ian murder to move forward and get solved; for Caleb and Morgan to begin a relationship already or begin something with someone else if they aren't going to connect, and for other characters to take on enhanced roles or move forward or backward in the books. Caleb is still an odd character for me. I hope we get more of his background and how he came to be. He doesn't really 'fit' exactly for me. The only character that seems to be moving is Able, given he married in this novel.

I got the third book in this series; I hope it will be more compelling and move some of the plot lines along. I mean, seriously, how many small towns have 4 murders in such a short span after having none for so many years prior....

I'm not exactly sure this review has spoilers, but I've given away a few things....

Great

Thought the first in the series good but had to read the next to make sure. Wonderful cozy mystery based in Michigan. Filled with quirky and wise characters, sometimes at the same time. The mysteries are interesting and often intriguing. There is a slight touch of romance. The main character is a captain, or chief on this small town police force and is a woman full of snark. The back story mystery continues through each of the books so far. Relationships between characters and their backgrounds are on going. To get the best out of each book start with the first one and read in order.
