“There are moments in life when everything just feels wrong. When hurt and pain is all around you. When you’ve somehow lost all that you had. When nothing makes sense any more. Dea stared at me, the sense of hurt written all over her face, her eyes puffy from too many tears. “Before, when we split up, I always had hope that we would get back together,” she sobbed. “Now I don’t know. I don’t know if things can ever be the same between us Chris.” I knew she was right. This had been going on for too long, a slight fracture in our relationship that had slowly grown into a chasm that might never be bridged. And it was all my fault. Dea was ready. I stood to say goodbye. To hold her and kiss her one last time. To look into those eyes one last time. They were defiant, almost angry, refusing to tear up, but they were the same beautiful blue eyes I’d stared into beside the Mekong all those years and memories ago. “I’ll see you somewhere,” she said, moving away from me towards the road. “Bye bye.” “Bye bye,” I whispered, as the only girl I’d ever truly loved cycled out of my life. I fell to my knees and wept uncontrollably, for I knew it was over.” Join Chris Pountney in the third and final part of his journey to explore the world on his bicycle. Still guided by his original seven challenges, he is determined to succeed in completing all of them as he and his girlfriend Dea continue east from the little Chinese town of Mori. But on the other side of the Pacific the Americas bring with them a whole new set of difficulties, and it is not only the bike trip, but something much more important that is at stake this time.
Having read the two previous books in the series I was looking forward to the third and it did not disappoint. During the pandemic and lockdown I have been reading lots of travel books and this trilogy has been my mainstay for the past several weeks. If you are an armchair traveller like myself I heartily recommend the whole series.
A good book not as good as his first but better than the second. In this book he matures quite a lot as he enters middle age , something he struggles with. He is at the start a bit narcissistic putting his wants above his partner Dea which by the end he no longer does . The journey itself is interesting but as usual is poor decision making and risk taking never bits him on the arse ! He seems to meet a lot of good people on his travel but in my experience this is not always the case, is insight at the end on Covid at the end of the book is very insightful as he as a degree in virology . ( ironic ) I look forward to his next book ( Adventures of a Pizza transporter ? )
We read all three cycle touring books by Chris. He can write.
Although, he is a cycle tourer his is a travel writer. Cycling is his means but travelling is the experience. He is not about the cathedrals but rather the vistas, the magical mountains, the colourful people, the hardships to conquered the world and relationships. And the ability to recognise he is a stubborn dude. Good fun. 👍
Wow, I finally finished the last of Chris’s books, all 1,634 pages combined, and I loved every adventure. The icing on the cake is that he met the love of his life, and they got to experience so much of the world together. Thank you, Chris, for these books, and I can’t wait to read about the next chapter of your life with Dea.
Brilliant ending to to Chris and Dea's adventure. This book gave me all the feels. I've been on the trip with them albeit from the comfort of my sofa. A travel page turner if ever there was one.
I have read 3 of Chris's books now. I have very much enjoyed all of them. Informative about the countries. Lots of humour. Makes me want to travel as well.
There not much more you would ask of a bike journey adventure. Well written with good discription of people, places, and cultural of the area traveling in. Add in relationship issues doesn't hurt. Good book.
What a great read a really thoughtful interesting inspiring story a fitting finish to the series which I have loved reading I really feel that I have been on the journey also with the way that Chris has written the series great detail throughout lots of nice little anecdotes and a few tantrums from Dea.
