Cook’s Amazon bestselling Surviving the Dead Series!
James N. Cook is a martial arts enthusiast, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a former cubicle dweller, and the author of the Surviving the Dead series. He hikes, he goes camping, he travels a lot, and he has trouble staying in one spot for very long. He lives in North Carolina.
I know I am biased because James Cook is my favorite author and Surviving the Dead is my go to series to read over and over. When I read the opening scene of War Without End my first thought was how little "zombies" had to do with the story and settled in to read an amazingly original story about a post apocalyptic society with characters I truly want to know more and more about. Even after all these books in the series, I am amazed how hooked I am on this series continuing. There are a couple of really good long term zombie apocalypse stories but what makes this one the best in the genre is the emotional connection I have developed with these characters and what comes next in their story. I will end my five star review with I felt a deep shutter of fear run down my spine at the set up for the next book. Scary zombie apocalypse is back better and more original than ever and I would be scared as hell if I was in their shoes.
This series has always been one of my favorites and this book was not only enjoyable but added a new story to this series. Eric and Gabriel, along with Cole and Hawk are back together to fight not only evil humans but a new undead threat. The action and characters were well written and the book was impossible to put down. Eric also struggles with wanting to be a regular family man, but knows his fighting skills can help protect others. The threat that is looming may be just as devastating as the orginal outbreak. I am excited to see where this will take the characters in the next book along with Gabriel's daughter, Sabrina who is also a warrior like her father. This new threat will make for more exciting reading and I am looking forward to book 10.
Since the outbreak and collapse of civilization, the United States has fought hard to hold together what is left of the nation. The Storm Road Tribe has a new weapon, a mutated zombie that can run jump and is double the size of a human. Eric Riordan has come to Colorado Springs (the new capitol) to have his second child with his wife and build his business up But soon after he arrives the city is hit by an attack from the storm road tribe and he soon finds himself in the middle of the fighting and horrors that follow.Eric and friend Gabriel learn the truth about the new zombies and how in the coming years could wipe out civilization. I think the theme of the book is that there is always another way. In the book Eric’s wife tells him he doesn't need to fight anymore but he wants to because he is trained to and feels like he needs to help people fight the zombies. He eventually finds out that there are alternatives to helping out people and he has been doing it for 2 years so he can stop fighting everytime something happens. Gabriel on the other hand does the exact opposite and his wife doesn't care what he does as long as he comes home so he joins a group that helps out the military to defend what is left of America. In the book he really learns to never underestimate his enemies because he does and loses 100’s of people to the new infected (zombie) the the storm road tribe releases in the city. I thought the book was very good, it was exciting, scary and funny and if you love military end of the world type books you would love this book. It is about 700-800 pages so it's a little longer but it was fun to read but I recommend reading the first 8 books so you understand what is happening. If you like all the books there are going to be more but they haven't come out yet so you have to wait. I rate the book 9.9/10 just because it wasn't the perfect book .
It was great to catch up with the guys, and this was a character driven story despite all of the action. Switching back and forth between different first person narratives makes it hard to keep up with at times, I wish we could stick with one or the other. Other than that it's well written and leaves us eagerly awaiting the next book.
Eric and Gabe continue to try to live the best life they can in "the new world" they find themselves in, but can't seem to shake the feeling of responsibility for their fellow man (no matter how little their fellow man is deserving of their help).
If you want a series that is entertaining to read, filled with intrigue, sprinkled with love stories, unbelievable monsters, entrepreneurs, and master criminals with a lot of screws loose, then this is the series for you. Binge read the lot. Well done! Can't wait for the next one.
I always enjoy James Cook's stories. Well written and edited. But by book 6 in the series, I was feeling a little bored. Then, I read books 7 and 8 with increasing interest. Then came book 9. What a great turn of events. Can't wait to read the next books in the series.
What an outstanding installment in the Surviving the Dead series and well worth the wait! Bravo Mr. Cook! Well written, engaging, and hard to put down. I was so happy to catch up with all our characters and explore the post-apocalypse world. Really looking forward to the next book in the series.
Fantastic addition to the bigger story line..... it may be treading on a step too far, but still good. Also sets the stage for 4 or 5 other directions for future works. I even want to know more about where Maru goes!
In the latest chapter we find our courageous crew fighting their greatest threat yet. Along the way very surprising new heroes and players will emerge. Meanwhile in the mist a great mystery lurks that will change everything.
