The war is over and Andy Clanton is ready to live happily ever after.
Space Force has other ideas.
Recruited to follow the last signal of the mysterious Elders to a system halfway across the galaxy, Andy joins the crew of the James Bowie for another adventure into the unknown.
The journey will be filled with mystery and wonder, with strange life seeded on far-flung worlds by the godlike Elders…and with danger. For the Elders didn’t leave our galaxy of their own accord. They were driven out by an implacable enemy, something beyond their understanding…and ours.
Now that enemy has returned, and Earth is going to need every ally it can get.
Even the ones who used to be our enemies.
Dragon Award Finalist Rick Partlow’s Earth at War series is military sci-fi at its finest: packed with nonstop action and seasoned with grade-A military humor. Jump into the story today!
Rick Partlow is that rarest of species, a native Floridian. Born in Tampa, he attended Florida Southern College and graduated with a degree in History and a commission in the US Army as an Infantry officer. His lifelong love of science fiction began with Have Space Suit---Will Travel and the other Heinlein juveniles and traveled through Clifford Simak, Asimov, Clarke and on to William Gibson, Walter Jon Williams and Peter F Hamilton. And somewhere, submerged in the worlds of others, Rick began to create his own worlds. He has written over 70 books in over a dozen different series, and his short stories have been included in many different anthologies.
He currently lives in norther Wyoming with his wife and their dog. Besides writing and reading science fiction and fantasy, he enjoys outdoor photography, hiking and camping.
The book starts with Andy and the Jambo on a jaunt through the galaxy stopping off at different planets along the way. This was Ok but it was really just a collection of minor incidents not really moving the story along until there is a sudden massive leap forward that blows the scope of the story wide open. The story becomes much more interesting and at times full of action, in fact the action is probably a bit over-the-top.
I enjoyed this book much more than the previous one. The author doesn’t repeat himself very often, nor over describes things and I didn’t even mind his occasional American jingoistic attitude.
Sci-fi pop culture references abound in Rick Partlow's "Earth at War" series. Particularly from the main character, ex-Marine (I know, there ain't no such thing as an ex-Marine), Sci-fi fiction writer (is there anymore Sci-fi when the aliens are real?), savior of Earth in it's first solar system defense, and hyper translation capable spaceship 'James Bowie' Ground Forces commander Andy. Exploring toward the origin of an even more advanced race than the aliens of the Alliance called The Elders the crew encounters more of the Elders work. Populations of Earth humans planted on terraformed worlds not just thousands of years in Earth's past but as recent as a few centuries. They discover the source solar system of the Elders signal. Not wanting to include spoilers I will let you discover what they find for yourself. As always the action is believable, fun to read, and leaving the reader eager for more.
Why do I say that? “Reaction Force Two was made up of Navy Seals and probably already had a book deal.” My oldest brother was a Green Beret for 29 years. When I was a kid I asked him what the biggest difference was between Army S.F. and Navy Seals. He simply replied “We don’t advertise.” Rick knows. Read his stuff it’s good!
I love this series. The characters are full of life and the situations are epic without being silly. Chances are if you’ve read this far I. The series you are already a fan. No reason to stop now. Lots of interesting developments.
A solid continuation of the series. Ending was a bit abrupt. That said I enjoyed the book. Lots of action. Plausible storyline. Good development of old and new characters. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I do tend to enjoy books by this author and recommend his books to you.
Well another great storyline from Rick Partlow just a shame have to until next June 22 for the next episode lol. Totally looking forward to Enemy Forces
Thoroughly enjoyed the story line and the characterso in this book. Thanks for letting me share this story with you, and I look forward to more of the same.
Light on science, somewhat well thought out combat, and some very impressive imagination. If reality followed fiction, this would make a decent series.
