Born in Tampa, he attended Florida Southern College and graduated with a degree in History and a commission in the US Army as an Infantry officer. His lifelong love of science fiction began with Have Space Suit---Will Travel and the other Heinlein juveniles and traveled through Clifford Simak, Asimov, Clarke and on to William Gibson, Walter Jon Williams and Peter F Hamilton. And somewhere, submerged in the worlds of others, Rick began to create his own worlds. He has written over 70 books in over a dozen different series, and his short stories have been included in many different anthologies.
He currently lives in norther Wyoming with his wife and their dog. Besides writing and reading science fiction and fantasy, he enjoys outdoor photography, hiking and camping.
Well developed characters with clearly defined personalities. Multiple plots were complex enough that what you thought was coming was seldom what the author gave you (SURPRISE!!). Further, the plots were woven masterly with drama, emotion and action that literally started at one gravity in book one and continued escalating faster than 25 gravities through book six. Battle “scenes” just kept coming but unlike so many other “Mech” based novels, the scenes (battle and interpersonal) were written in a style that was - plain, easy to follow, believable, and engaged the reader intellectually – rather than being a conglomerate of words to get past. BRAVO !!
(No significant editorial gaffs that slowed reading or even came close to irritating.)
Reading Rick Partlow's series is always fun and exciting. This is another great series. There are a great many references to Battletech and Star Trek. There were references to Babylon 5 and Gundam, and a single reference to an old book titled Doc Savage. There was lots of action, political intrigue and a little romance. For those who care, there were no sex scenes. I would rate it as PG-13. This does not mean that it won't keep adults highly entertained. I found the entire series very fun and entertaining and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I really didn't. A book about a bunch of mech battles? And what kind of name is Wholesale Slaughter? Is that an indication of the content of the book? But then I got into the books and I was hooked. There were mech battles but the books were mostly well crafted, well written stories, with engaging characters you loved or hated, with plots and twists that kept your interest throughout. It's a long series so your not going to sit down and buzz through it in a sitting, but it's well worth the time. Excellent series.
Prefer books that do not have things jumping around quite so much but all in all found the series entertaining. Plenty of characters to either like and root for as well as some despicable ones. Been reading sci-fi since the 1950s and it's refreshing to encounter an author like those that hooked me so long ago. Few grammatical errors crept in towards the end but not enough to ruin the enjoyment. Might be a good idea to do a bit more editing.
Author Partlow's great space series comes at a perfect time for me. I love mil-space series since I first read Dune. Now, waiting for the last season of The Expanse, WS characters really filled the gap. Excellent battle scenes, good pacing throughout and enough intimacy to really feel like you know the characters. Highly recommended. Add a star of you are a fan of The Expanse!
The author has written a series that is remarkably well constructed and yet easy to read and enjoy. Each book in the series is full of space and land war with a little romance sprinkled into the plot. Sci-Fi fans will love this series! I'm going to read the other books by Rick Partlow starting now!
I've read many sci -to books in my 80 yrs ,this kept me hurrying n to do my chores so that I could return to the adventures of Wholesale Slaughter. --One of the best
Wonderful series and the plot is well put together. What prompted me to give the series a 5 stars is when author has LORD'S prayer in one of the book that don't happen on most of Sci-fi books.
Starting as a young Lieutenant thinking about how things should be done about pirates and raiders through doing it covertly, then overtly becoming a sector wide guardian in a well thought out plot and series.
Fairly amateurish writing style and lots of padding and repetitive battles to extend the the story line. Concepts were interesting which is why I read the series but in the end, the series was disappointing.
It´s an ok story, nothing exceptional, but well told… the dinamic from the 2 brothers feeled real … the main character feeled a bit plain, but the secondary characters made up for him
A tremendous post imperial romp through a well realised collection of nation states indulging in continual Machiavellian politics. Add well rounded characters and you have a tale to keep a reader wanting more.
Love it when I can read a series as one long book. This one did not disappoint. Great characters, interesting history/universe, and of course, epic battles. Throughly entertaining.
I was really intrigued by the premise, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The middle part dragged a bit, and some of the characters felt one-dimensional. It’s not a bad story, but it could have been so much more. I liked it, but I didn’t love it.
What a universe! From start to finish the books put together an outstanding adventure. Loved the different characters and the way author put them together.
The story is full of surprises with unexpected ending. Well done. You will enjoy reading very book. When I started the book I didn't what to put it down.
Really interesting series with well developed characters and a great story line. I have read other booked by author and look forward to reading others.
This is a very entertaining series. It is nice to read about good guys and bad guys, all demonstrating intelligence and rational motivations. This is lacking in much of SF.
I've binge read thru all 6 parts of the epic space opera. Found it hard to put it down. I know all tales have to come to an end but wish this one didn't.
I enjoyed this series, it got a little long in some of the scene descriptions. Plenty of action and the characters names weren't impossible to pronounce.
