Change of Course

Rate this book
From the moment the man walked into the bar, I knew he was still in the closet. But that didn’t stop us from sharing an incredible night together.

Our easy, one-night hookup went from no-strings-attached to a tangled mess on the first day of the semester, when I locked eyes with the mystery man from the bar... who also happens to be my new Art History professor.

Lucas Mathiasson is everywhere I turn and the harder we try to resist, the closer we’re pulled together. Until our weekend in Vegas. Then all bets – and rules – are off.

But lessons in love can’t be taught from a syllabus. They have to be experienced.

And not all love is easy. Not all rules are meant to be broken. And not all men are created to live life in the open.

Falling for my professor wasn’t part of the plan... but how do you let go of the man who taught you how to love?

RATING 4.5 STARS

Change of Course is book three in the Change of Hearts series by Sierra Hill. This was my very first book by Sierra and I loved it. This can definitely be read as a stand alone as I have not read any of the books in this series and had no trouble at all. This is a M/M forbidden love/student-professor romance.

Kyler Scott is a twenty two year old college art student. Kyler is not only a full time student, he is working two jobs to pay his rent and tuition. He works as a bartender in a gay bar and also dances part time as an erotic dancer in another bar. Kyler has been hurt, badly. He learned his lesson about love. It’s not for him. But he does believe in hook ups. One time only. As soon as he saw the buttoned up, sexy as sin man come into the bar, he knew he wanted him. They shared a fabulous night together and for Kyler, that was the end of it. But, fate had other plans.

Lucas Mathiasson realized in college that he was gay. But he comes from a well to do family that has expectations. Lucas went against his family when he chose to be an art professor instead of going into the family business. But he hasn’t been able to bring himself to tell them of his sexual preference when marrying for status is what his family does and is what is expected of him. After he became a professor, it became even harder to come out. So, as a result, no one knows who Lucas really is.

As soon as he met the sexy bartender, Lucas knew he wanted him. But one night wasn’t enough. Kyler wasn’t having any of it though. He said one night was all there would be. Then, when the first day of the new semester started, there he was sitting in the classroom. It seemed their paths were destined to cross, whether Kyler liked it or not.

“Lucas. This can’t possibly work.”
“I don’t see a problem with it. Unless of course, you don’t think you’ll be able to control yourself around me.”

One touch is all it took for these two to ignite the undeniable attraction they shared. But, even if Kyler decided to have a fling with his sexy professor, school rules are clear. They could both lose everything.

“Rules are meant to be broken. Boundaries are meant to be pushed. Lines are definitely made to be crossed. Which may very well spell trouble when it comes to Professor Lucas Mathiasson’s plans when it comes to me.”

Both Lucas and Kyler try with everything they have to keep things professional between them. But the pull is just too strong. One more time turns to two. Respect and feelings grow. And lines are crossed, until neither of them want to go back.

“I wasn’t made to withstand the pleas of a man like Lucas Mathiasson. I’m not strong enough and honestly too stupid to say anything but yes.”

I loved this book. I loved watching these two fall. The writing was beautiful, the chemistry burned up the pages. Then why, you might wonder, did I give it a 4.5 rating instead of a full 5? I didn’t like the ‘daddy’ addition to their relationship. It’s not a favorite of mine and I thought added nothing to the story. Also, there was only one instance of Kyler with an e-cigarette but I wish that had been left out. It’s just a personal issue of mine but I don’t like smoking in a book. Besides that, I loved everything about these two and couldn’t put the book down. I will definitely be looking through this author’s work in the future.

No. No, no, no. No. No.

Cringe, cringe, cringe.

I could write a review, but above you can see my reactions reading this book, and I think it pretty much says it all. This reads very much like an MF book turned MM.

And don't get me started on having the big misunderstanding/break up close to the 90% mark instead of the 80% mark (which is bad enough).

The student/professor trope is one of my faves BUT it makes me super picky! This was a bad one. Like SO bad! EEK.
It started off on a bad note from the prologue.

I hate when first time sex between the characters is off page. It’s a pet peeve of mine. 🙄🙄 AND then keep alluding to that sexy time over and over again. It’s not my favorite brand of storytelling 😕.
The age gap is slight but Lucas gets called old man among other names by Kyler. *epic eye roll* It is ONLY 7 years!! And all the Daddy stuff pul-leaze

When the sex is on page, Kyler is surprised by Lucas’s condo decor. As I am reading, I’m like haven’t you been there already once before. Weird and huh ?

Kyler is a bit of a mess and I’m not a fan of him sharing personal info that was really not his to share that has far reaching consequences. Not very trustworthy.

By this time, I’m ready to start skim reading so I can see how this disaster ends. It goes from one crazy plot to another like some deranged soap opera.

This was probably one of the most convoluted plots I’ve ever read and this author will be on my never to buy list. I read pretty much exclusively MM books anyway. The MF plot shoe-horned into a MM setting is SO UGH 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Another fantastic book in this series by Sierra Hill! I loved Lucas and Kyler! The tension between them was FIRE! I love a good student/teacher story because I love the aspect of them having to hide their feelings. Trying to keep away from each other. Not wanting others to discover the feelings they have either. It keeps me on pins and needles the whole time! Lucas was not "out", so when he decided that he needed to come out to his bestfriend (since college) I was feeling the nerves right along with him. For being such complete opposites, Lucas and Kyler had a whole heck of a lot in common. Both of them thinking that they don't need anyone, but needing to connect with someone one level that is more than just physical. To say that my hear burst when they finally decided to actually be together is a HUGE understatement! But then that made the drama that followed that much more heartbreaking!

This was GREAT way to start off my reading for the year!!!

Kyler will never get involved or give his love to another man again. He has one night stands and never a second. So it will be one night with the stunning older Lucas and nothing more.

Kyler recognizes a closeted man from miles and Lucas is so far in the closet.
After one night with the sparkling Kyler Lucas almost begs for a second night with him but Kyler is persistent. Nope.

After they understand Lucas is Kyler’s art professor, the situation isn’t getting easier. Their connection is forbidden and how do they keep their hands to themselves.

Lucas must have Kyler again, just ones to get him out of his system. Kyler agrees.
When they are together it’s sexy and steamy, feelings are all over the place.

They will have one final chance to be lovers before they’re back being a closeted professor and a student. Easier said than done. With mutual friends, they keep running into each other.

Besides the main story where Lucas and Kyler are struggling to stay away from each other and even have to hide their relationship, there are some nice side stories, where one has a crush on his straight best friend, there’s a grandma who’s wealthy and threatens to disinherit, she wants to see a marriage and grandchildren, one who’s secretly a sexy dancer, there is of course art to find and even a contest to win, there are misunderstandings, there’s an ex and luckily there are supporting friends.

It’s all entertaining and enjoyable material.

A quite captivatingly written story, it was emotional, the self-acceptance was movingly done, it’s sexy, nicely paced, with engaging characters, a sweet and sexy storyline. Conclusion: I had a good time reading this story!

Forbidden Is Hot

Lucas is the closeted, smokin' hot professor. Whereas, Kyler is the out and proud and very off-limits student. Lucas has been dreaming about his one steamy Summer night with Kyler since it happened. When Kyler turns up as his student, they both find themselves crossing lines they never thought they would. It is well-done and incredibly hot, even as they fight it.

I loved how Lucas' relationship with Garrett, his best friend and first crush, morphed over time. I also loved how supportive and strong that relationship, as well as those with his family, continued to be even after truths were admitted. It was unfortunate that Kyler didn't have that same family experience but that's life for you. He at least had friends who were there for him when he needed them.

There was a plot twist or two that I totally saw coming but it was still laughable at how one happened and interesting to watch the other blow up.

This is the third book in the series. It is the first book I've read in said series and NEVER did I feel like I missed out even though the characters in the prior stories pop up frequently in Lucas and Kyler's tale. Not to mean that I'm uninterested in reading them. Rather, that it didn't impact my enjoyment of this installment. I really enjoyed the ARC for this novel.

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.5 stars

This book didn’t work for me from the beginning and, as it went on, there were more things added that didn’t work for me. Change of Course is the third book in the Change of Hearts series, with the first two books being MF.

Lucas and Kyler meet and we are told they have this incredible chemistry between them, yet we don’t get to see it. Shortly after we meet them, their night together is off page and we don’t see any of the connection that they keep talking about throughout the book. When the men meet again in class, a large part of the initial storyline relies on the chemistry they keep thinking about from that night, but it is never shown on page. As their relationship progresses, this chemistry keeps getting discussed, yet with so much not shown, it was difficult to feel it come off the page.

Though it wasn’t as good as I expected, I didn’t feel cheated. It was an interesting read with some great elements.

The spectrum of gay characters was one of them. There wasn’t a unique depiction of homosexuality, each character was different. As often, the acceptance level was high, but not overly so–there were characters who struggled a bit with the relationship, though not for long. I’d have liked to see Lucas’s closeted experience used more.

There was heat here, but a lot of it was written post-act, as remembrance, and I missed the emotions behind the intimacy. That doesn’t mean there weren’t any, but they were explained, not felt. That’s my main complain with a story about a gay character accepting his sexuality and coming out. I’d have been okay without the daddy kink too, but that’s just a preference.

The ending was a bit abrupt, even with the epilogue. But when all is said and done, there isn’t much left, I suppose. I’ll revisit the series though, because I want to read more about Kyler and Lucas outside of their relationship.

Quickie

- Series: Change of hearts #3 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #MM romance #age gap #forbidden romance #opposites attract
- Triggers: mention of past toxic relationship
- Main couple: Kyler Scott & Lucas Mathiasson
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 3/5
- + a relationship between a proper closeted teacher and a young flaming gay? yay!
- – the villains here weren’t used properly in my opinion

Change of Course is the third book in Sierra Hill's Change of Hearts series. It's easily read as a standalone, but much better if read in order.

Omg! Lucas and Kyler! If you've been reading this series, you probably already love Kyler as much as I do. And Lucas! I have long been waiting for his story too.

I love this story from the first page. I don't love teacher/student romances, but I was able to overlook that in this one. It's a large obstacle for sure, but one they certainly want to overlook.

Poor Lucas has long been interested in his best friend Garrett, but he's stayed closeted, knowing his best friend was straight. Meeting Kyler sets him on a course he never say coming.

Their tale includes a closeted teacher and his tough journey to come out. It includes a student who stands up for his independence. And it includes a controlling grandmother, a pushy student, and sneaking around.

The age gap leads to a whole lot of differences between the men. Not only are they in different aspects of their lives, they also have a major economic imbalance between them. One's a rich man from a rich family, the other's working two jobs to make ends meet while also finishing his college degree.

The only thing I didn't love about this story is it's appearance in the series. This book all takes place between Books 1 and 2, and should be placed in such a position. I'm assuming it came after the other 2 books just because it's an mm book, while the other books are both mf.

I love Change of Course. And I love the way each book in this Sierra Hill series connects. Three of the characters are all friends/roommates, the other three all friends from their own college days years earlier. It makes for a fun read.

This was a M/M age gap romance and I was intrigued from the beginning.  It was pleasantly good with intense chemistry and sexy intimacy. These two were complete opposites but had this special connection that couldn't be undenied. These two deserved every bit of their HEA.

Change Of Course is an M/M book as well as a professor/student romance. As someone who likes both, I jumped at the chance to read this standalone story. The storyline is sweet and somewhat unique, with limited angst. I read it in one sitting!

Kyler is outgoing, confident, and talented. He is very comfortable in his own skin and with being openly gay. For me, he was very easy to like. Lucas is quiet, intelligent, and refined. He’s also closeted, which makes any long term relationship challenging. Although I found him likeable, I was sometimes on edge worrying about his career and his reputation. The chemistry between the two men was clear and palpable.

The secondary characters really added to the plot, especially Peyton and Caleb. Although I liked the outcome and the epilogue, I felt the issues between Kyler and Lucas were resolved a bit too quickly and easily. The ending felt a bit abrupt and rushed, and the antagonists weren’t as developed as I would like.

Overall, Change of Course was an interesting and enjoyable read. It is book three in the Change of Hearts series, but can easily be read as a standalone. I have not read the first two books and didn’t feel I was missing anything. That being said, I am planning to go back and read the rest of the series because the secondary characters intrigued me.

Change of Course • Change of Hearts series - Book 3
*ARC Review*
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
@sierrahillbooks

Change of Course is a MM romance about a college professor, Lucas, and his student, Kyler. They met each other at a bar, had a hot night together, & never saw each other again...until their first day of class. They are faced with the challenge of ignoring their connection because of their student/teacher relationship and because Lucas has not revealed his sexual preferences to any of his friends or family.

This is a beautiful story of learning to be true to yourself and live your life on your terms, even if it means possibly losing friends/family/career/money along the way. It's a good reminder that we love who we love & it's up to us to decide what's most important to us.

The sex scenes were hot! I struggled a little bit with the term "daddy" being used during their intimate scenes. This is just one of my personal quirks that I am not a fan of, regardless of whether the relationship is MM/MF. I went back and forth between giving this book 4 or 5 stars because of this. However, I decided this one minor personal preference of mine does not take away from the wonderful story & underlining message of the book. I truly loved Lucas & Kyler's story 💜

An easy five stars for this alluring book once in I didn't leave ..

I honestly loved this book. It has all that I adore and so much more.

Kyler Scott a college art student who has a few jobs to make ends meet , his life hasn't been easy at all he knows who he is and where he hopes to be.

Working the bar at one of his jobs he definitely notices a stunning charismatic guy , they banter , they look and Kyler wants …

Lucas Matthiasson an art history professor, was watching this young bartender and an instant attraction occurred ,with Kyler's witty comebacks Lucas was hooked ….

Hookup just the one , could it stop at one ?

All it took was a touch , their skin was aflame with lust and wanting more but knew it was forbidden.

How their just one became more is beautifully written .

An addictive read with characters who are true humans with a past that can be worked out hopefully .

The feelings they have are outstanding, making them know who they want.

If you find the one you really love you can do anything , say anything to be true to yourself and your love.

This book is so , so ,good..

Change of Course is the third book in the Change of Hearts series from Sierra Hill.......and she saved the absolute best for last! This M/M / age-gap / student-teacher romance was fantastic!! I absolutely loved Kyler and Lucas!

They were complete opposites - Kyler, a student, free-spirited, out and proud; Lucas, a professor who is still hiding his sexuality from everyone, except for during his random hookups. And when these two hooked up, they didn't realize Lucas would end up being Kyler's art professor. Both of them thought they could fight their attraction and keep their relationship professional, but the pull between them was too hard to ignore. And the more time he spent with Kyler, the more Lucas realized that he couldn't keep living in the shadows and hiding his true self anymore, even if that meant he lost his inheritance from his Grandmom or even his job. He wanted what his best friend Garrett had found with Brooklyn, which was love. Lucas knew he had that with Kyler, and I'm glad that he finally had the strength to show that to the world.

Sierra Hill has written a Fantastic M/M Book with two fantastic characters in Kyler Scott & Lucas Mathiasson.
Kyler is a struggling Art Student, Comfortable In who he is. He works two jobs to makes end meet and will do what he needs to to become a successful artist one day, but what he never expects is a one night hookup to become so much more when he meets Lucas.
Lucas is a Art History Professor and a man who struggles to admit who he really is, The pressure of his job and the pressure from his Grandmother has him realizing that when you meet the person who can make you see who you can be without being ashamed is the one you hold on to.
Kyler & Lucas can not be anymore different, from their backgrounds and even the age difference but when you find the one person who completes you in every way you know that is the one that can make you have that HEA you deserve.

Book 3 and the final book in the Change of Hearts series. Loved this M/M, student/teacher romance. Kyler and Lucas were such a great couple. The chemistry and attraction between them was so intense. Their romance was wonderful to watch grow from an one night stand to something much more. Their story pulled me in from page one and stayed with me long after I was finished with the book. If you are looking for a great read, then I highly recommend this book.

Change of Course is the third book in Sierra Hill’s Change of Hearts series, and I’ve been excited about this one since the start of the series. I think the fact I was so excited about this one is the reason I wasn’t as in love with it as I had hoped to be. That is not to say I did not enjoy it – as I did – I simply expected a wee bit more from it.

Change of Course is a story that easily sucks you in, one that has you happy to devour it in a single sitting. Once I started, I could not wait to see how everything came together. As addictive as the story was, I feel things were never taken as far as they could have been. Dilemmas were overcome too easily and the villains in the story were never as villainous as they could have been. Despite this, it was an easy read and I enjoyed seeing how this story came together.

All in all, I would not label this my favourite in the series, but it is worth reading for those who have enjoyed the prior books.

Change of Course by Sierra Hill a five-star read that will change your course. This was amazing, its number three in the Change of Hearts series, but they each run along side each other so you can read them as stand-alone, but I have honestly adored the series, it felt like catching up with friends I haven’t seen for ages. This is M/M so it won’t be everyone’s taste (even though who cares its hot and I’m not going to judge anyone’s choices but surely more love is a better thing). Lucas has always lived by the rules, but is it time he throws the rules out of the window? Kyler brought some light heartedness to everything and I’m not just talking about those shorts, as I am sure they would lighten more than a few hearts. This really is a great story and a great series everyone should pick it up and devour it.

This is an MM, forbidden age gap romance... it doesn’t get better than that for me! All the genres/tropes I adore!
Lucas is a closeted professor who’s a bit gruff, but he has a lot of heart and intelligence.
Kyler is a 22 year old art student, he’s sassy, fun, talented and quite sweet.
Together they are really hot and sexy!
They fight their attraction and there is a bit of angst and push/pull.
The story is fun, sexy and beautiful. In between the laughs and steam there are very poignant and important moments.
I love Kyler’s playfulness and what that brings out in Lucas.
I think it’s the perfect balance of fun, forbidden, romantic and HOT with some really great life wisdom.
It definitely brings to your attention to live your life honestly and for you. Go for your truth and happiness!
Great story and characters! I loved it!

I absolutely devoured the book! Once I got started, I could not put it down. I had to keep going to see how Lucas and Kyler played out. The push/pull of the attraction, the opposite personalities, trying to be professional, had me hooked. Both men have baggage they need to work through. I enjoyed the growth of Lucas to live his life honestly. Kyler is just extra, from his wardrobe to his personality. Can they get past the speedbumps and make their relationship work? How can they avoid the heat between them?

Thank you to the Author for an advanced copy for my voluntary review

Audio: 5 Stars!!!

Story: Plot was nice but poorly developed. As a professor the well being of their students, especially when it comes to graduating, should be put before his horniness, especially when you are basically being a selfish ass who wants booty without coming out. I can't stand selfish people who prioritize their needs while stomping all over others' rights.

If I was Kyler, I would have totally asked the "professor" to switch my class or I would go and complain to the school. You know, treat others like they deserve for being selfish assholes! Also lack of communication breakups.....not my jam! If 2 "adults" can't communicate properly, then they should not even be thinking about relationships. This book was so filled with stereotypes and cheap fillings. I also got the feeling that the book read like a MF book and not an MM one, can't put my finger on what specifically, but there is something about it. If it wasn't because I love the voice of the narrators, I would have probably dropped at a 10%.

Hope you enjoy it more than I did, Happy Readings!!!

I wanted to love this book, because it's my favorite trope : teacher/student - but this was exactly what I don't love in a teacher/student book.
I want to see the characters in that kind of situation, when they are in school and in their own persona as a teacher and as a student. When it's a bit taboo and risky, when you don't know what will happen, will they get caught or not?!
But not in this book.

I loved reading the book 'til 45-50%, but after that it got boring and not exciting at all. I lost interest and I just knew how the book will end... spoiler alert, it hasn't ended as I thought it would....it got worse than that! And that is why I gave 3 star, when a gay book got a mostly hetero ending, it just pisses me off. I don't know the author, I think it's the first or second gay book she has written, but sometimes you can just tell if someone is strictly m/f author or can write m/m too. Sorry, m/m isn't for this author. (or she just needs to read more in the genre to get it)

I got an ARC of the book, and this was my honest review. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but there are things that pisses me off, and sadly, this book's style was one of those.

Kyler’s life is full between college and working multiple jobs to make ends meet but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make time for fun. He is up front about who he wants as a romantic partner and isn’t looking for love or a relationship but one night with Lucas sends them both down a path neither of them were expecting.

Lucas is not only a college professor but after their steamy evening he just found out he is Kyler’s professor. He prefers to keep his private life very private but there is something about Kyler that has him wondering if the reward of being together is worth the risk and Kyler faces the same dilemma as well.

Although Kyler and Lucas are at different points in their lives there is no denying not only the chemistry between them but the fact that their hearts belong to each other.

I was given an advance readers copy of this book and have decided to write a voluntary honest review. I am not a huge fan with mm I sometimes struggle with them. So of course once i realized this book was mm I was nervous, i haven't read anything from seirra I didn't like. With Change of pf course i found this book to be enlightening. I mean for Lucas to hide who really is, that has to be so hard and lonely. I really felt for him. Now Kyler is like one of the girls, the life of party. But even mr confident has his worries. I can't imagine how he must of felt after his break up with his ex. I think together Lucas and Kyler complement each other.

Amazing! Absolutely amazing! I’m not sure I can do this one justice. That’s how much I enjoyed it!... This book has got it all. Drama, angst, a real, honest love story… You will not want to put it down… Had me hooked!... Brilliant… No hesitation in giving this one 5 stars!! Just wish I could give it more. This is not the type of book I normally read and might not be for everyone but I don’t regret giving this book ago and that all down to the author as I do love her books and just had to give this one ago. Sierra Hill has truly shown us that she can write any sub genre, she is a very special author!! Definitely pick this one up. High-calibre stuff. Unputdownable, for sure! Happy reading everyone!!

Ahh!! Lucas and Kylers story is finally on its way and damn it’s great! Your pulled in from page one and the back and forth between these two will have to giggling. The relationship blossoms and of course has some hiccups from things not being told out loud but in the end love comes out on top! I have absolutely loved this series and I absolutely love kylers qwerky outfits and the fact he pushes Lucas out of his comfort zone.

If you haven’t started this series yet then you should definitely add it to your tbr pile!!
