This book is an amazing eye opener in the topic. Combined with Don's podcast, it gives you a whole new perspective of 'WHY you have Reflux?' - different (and 90% of the cases more realistic) than that of the 99% of GPs and adverts, pharpmacists or even gastroentereologist (that I met).

However, once you read his book and you understand the basics, I strongly advise you not to stop here (especially if you have longer term issues, or more serious issues like a esophagitis). Don is a good guy, but he only summed up what he understood of this disease, of the GI tract etc.

And then there is 'Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You' by Jonathan V. Wright, Lane Lenard. This book is the 1 book every refluxer should read. In fact, it makes me outrageous that specialized doctors aren't reading it... Jonathan explains the causes, the interactions, the symptoms and also explains you in detail how to act in different specific cases (H pyroli or no H pyroli, esophagitis or no espohagitis, moderate or full blown reflux etc). If you have reflux and you read 1 book - this has to be it. Just trust me and thank me later. You will understand where your issues come from, how they work, how can you make sure you get a proper diagnosis and then you get 200 years of science based evidence on how you might be treated - properly!

I am a bariatric patient. I had the vertical sleeve surgery 8 years ago. All was great until April when I started vomiting up to 6 times a day. As a result, I have ulcerative esophagitis and my bariatric surgeon would like to do a revision to a complete gastric bypass. In the meantime I am on 80mg of prilosec to heal the esophagus. I am looking for options. This book presents one. I listened to it on Audible but this is a very important and grave issue in my life so I purchased the book as well. Next month I will have another scope to make sure that my esophagus has healed. Then I will slowly wean myself off the prilosec and then follow Daniels protocol. I am also now following him on IG. Wish me luck.

Informative

This was a great, quick read that gives a lot of great information about GERD and “Silent” Reflux. I was recently diagnosed and have not been on PPIs, but this book has reaffirmed my decision to heal without them. I liked how succinct the chapters were while the author was still able to make it personal and encouraging.

really good information

I really enjoyed this book. Some of the info I had heard before but this was very concise and to the point. Sources are clearly mentioned as well. Definitely worth it if you suffer from acid reflux.

This was a succinct, clearly written book that makes good on its promises. Don Daniels does a superb job of explaining in simple terms the causes of reflux and not just how he successfully addressed it but how the literature supports his successful and generally applicable strategy. I have a diploma in natural nutrition and appreciate how Daniels boils down all the resources I had to study into student/client-friendly guidance. There are more thorough resources out there, but when someone is desperate for immediately applicable guidance, this book gives it without beating around the bush. Daniels mentions that his wife edited the book: kudos to her for helping fashion this accessible resource. Many academic resources aren’t this clear and only make the issue feel more overwhelming. Daniels doesn’t mention it but his approach can address multiple digestive and health issues where the person and their medical caretakers have never identified reflux as one of the issues at play because the other symptoms are so overwhelming and take centre stage (migraines, muscle and joint aches and pains, fibromyalgia, sleep issues, allergies, etc). (Naturopathic/nutritionist consultation may be needed to confirm that the approach is right for a given person with their unique situation.) It’s amazing (grace) that Daniels had such incredible improvement with such a simple approach despite 15 years of damage caused by reflux, which makes his method a great first approach before starting something more drastic like the GAPS diet, FODMAP diet, etc. I used this book as a start to getting some relief and thus space to think and get help, and then progressed to a full low-FODMAP diet and addressed black mold exposure with a naturopath that affected every system of my body: feflux was not a cause of all my troubles but, rather, one of the myriad of effects.

Thank you for this resource, Don. It’s a blessing.
