They say that the seventh son of a seventh son has awesome magical powers, but what does it mean to be the seventh daughter?
Well, everyone's about to find out, me included! Right when everything in my life was about to fall apart, I've been invited to a very exclusive academy, a magical one. I thought it was crazy, but it turns out magic is real, and more than that, there hasn't been a witch born in generations.
So it's just me and a school full of deliciously hot wizards who haven't had a woman around for years. What's a girl to do in this strange new world, other than fall in love... again... and again... and again?
But it's not all fun and games. When a dark force rises to threaten the school, the only thing that has a chance to save the day is my boys and me. Time to show the world that I was made for magic!

Why the main character doesn't look like her description?
I went back to this book to see what was written about the main character specifically a description of her. "Cool, light brown skin with dark freckles scattered across my face, my whole body actually, like stars. My eyes were golden brown" (This was actually copied and pasted from this book to describe the main character). "had porcelain skin that looked like it had never seen the sun, fiery red hair that fell from her head like a waterfall, and light green eyes" ( This was pasted from the book to describe the older sister Kim). That description is what the girl on the cover looks like. Amber May Hollow is supposed to have light brown eyes, freckles, and light brown skin with short hair "I took the bobby pins out of my short, coiled curls and shook them out. My hair was too short to put up in a ponytail, so I had to pin it back like twenties finger waves" ( another direct quote from the book).

I had hoped that this series would be enjoyable. It has many tropes that I enjoy. However, there are too many details that just don't make sense. The characters often get fixated on things that don't matter, and brush aside serious issues that normal people in their situation would question.
For example, the FMC is invited to a school she's never heard of, and there is almost no information in her one-page acceptance letter. Tuition, room and board, books, and equipment fees are not mentioned. So, she just assumes everything is free, even when her sister questions . She has no money to pay for anything, and no prospects for employment, but she is completely unconcerned that she could arrive and need to purchase either school or personal supplies.
The FMC is ridiculously stupid and unbelievably gullible. Those traits are overplayed in a specific scene to the point that it destroyed my ability to suspend my disbelief. Her actions make absolutely no sense, especially based on her background and her current circumstances. This is supposed to be a 21-year-old woman from Philadelphia. She's had plenty of life experience and exposure to stories about the bad things that happen to vulnerable women.
She puts herself in a position of potentially serious danger by believing one of her bullies, even though there's nothing credible about him or the information he gives her. She could easily ask for proof, but it doesn't occur to her to doubt his motives, even though he has targeted her from the first moment they met. Then, when faced with direct evidence that he deceived her, she refuses to believe that truth for an embarrassingly long time. At no point does she ever think about what could have happened to her if the wrong people had found her. Her "rescuer" thinks the whole thing is hilarious, instead of checking to make sure she has a functional brain and sitting her down for a long talk about stranger danger and the folly of trusting bullies without reason.
After that scene, I lost interest, since the characters are more mockable than relatable. Watching them muddle through their maze of self-imposed complications, repeating the same mistakes because they are incapable of learning, just isn't fun.
Okay, so some thoughts in bullet point form. I have really mixed feelings about this book.
Spelling errors, wrong word used, grammatical errors eg “dead-pan” instead of deadpan. She doesn’t look like the cover photo? Was pretty chill about the tiger?? The way she accepted the letter without much questioning was suspicious- just packs up her whole life and leaves without too much hesitation. Why does Corduroy automatically hate her? Why does she put up with her boyfriend for so long when she acknowledges he’s not great? Her boyfriend is verbally abusive, her family don’t like him, she doesn’t even like him, but she stays with him? Sleeps with Brayson despite him having met her boyfriend the night before, he doesn’t ask about him? Seems like the decent thing to do- ask if they’re still together so she’s not cheating… Doesn’t ask about STDS nor use protection Goes from being shy/seemingly inexperienced to having sex almost immediately The relationship with Oliver is just plain confusing Her relationship with her parents is confusing Focuses a lot on long descriptions of their eyes Uses “the fourth year” etc too much Casually has sex with her ex enemy out in the open, no questions about STDS nor condoms or birth control Doesn’t the school have some sort of medical bay for all her injuries? If Iverson is running around their island, why’s she trying to fly so openly? What’s the deal with Silas? Mentions how sneaky/ closed off he is, but doesn’t really explore this further Eli mentions relationships, she says 3- sleeping with someone once doesn’t automatically mean you’re in a relationship? Eli uses the term reverse harem twice, unlikely he’d know this term Explains how advanced her magic is in front of her enemy Corduroy? Doesn’t talk to any of the guys about her relationship to them- are they all okay with her hooking up with multiple people at the same time??
Not sure I’ll continue reading this series, but it was certainly an interesting concept

Loved the book. This is the first book I've read by the author. FMC is not snarky or badass but that's ok. This story will keep you engaged to the end. I also felt that there was no cliffhanger which was very good for me. I only had one problem. I know cover art is expensive and I do love looking at it. Usually it there is a person on it I usually use that to imagine the character in the story. The cover on the book has a picture of a girl with long red hair, green eyes and light skin tone when the female main character is biracial with short dark hair and golden brown eyes. As a PHILLY girl I though it was kinda nice that when the story opens she's lives there but alas that lasts for maybe two chapters. Still a good story.
This was, for the most part, a lighthearted, funny magical adventure. I have no idea why a white ginger is on the cover, that was confusing, but I fell hard for these characters. Especially Silas, he's my honey bun. please tell me there's more coming!!!!
Ok... so it’s hard to know where to start. Everything about this book is slightly off- it feels like a YA book that couldn’t get published so the author decided to make it a reverse harem- but failed. Like technically the doormat of a protagonist has sex with multiple “men” (they will be repeatedly referred to as boys and behave almost exactly like every 16 year old in a YA novel) but it’s not sexy- there is no relationship building or thoughts about relationship building. The mystery and action take forever to start but nothing else is happening either. The protagonist as flat as a pancake- none of her “feels” feel real- I’m struggling to pin point exactly why I don’t connect with her, but I think it’s because all the descriptions are overly simplified without any body or style to hold them up.
A total miss for me- but I did finish it because I kept thinking that I must be missing something- that I just needed to read further to get a feel for it- but it never came together.
OMMFG I'm in love with this book and I am so glad it will be a series!! Wow everything came together at the end and definitely leads up to what happens in the next book. Please hurry because I need to know what happens next.
Interesting storyline and liked the twists. Curious to see what the next ‘threat’ will be and what will happen with Courderoy. The Carson debacle was also anti-climatic - I thought there would have been more to that inevitable breakup.
I only have one think that was disturbing me.... Why girl on cover is white caucasian redhead? When FMC is a black girl with black corkscrew hair?? Not sure if it's just me, but I like to imagine the girl from cover to be the main character. I also think if the cover would show the real Amber it would make them more interesting as FMC is not just another white girl. [and that's coming from white girl ~~] I personally find it interesting that all the characters are multicultural, especially Amber harem are all different ages, ethinicty, overall different background and not just 'blond, black and red haired guy and all tall copy paste aside from that and color of eyes' ~~
Another huge plus, it takes time for the reationships to develop, though when it gets to confession of mutual attraction it ends the same. 'I like you" --> 'I like you too'--> proceeds to bang each other brains out. Well it's a bit less than that ,steamy scene is more on mild level. Still Amber and guys actually gets to know each other before any feelings develop.
Another plus, book takes premise in magic school, and there are actual lessons taking place. Some academy books skip the school life alltogether and just use it as title for series. There's nice amount of explanation how magic works, the history and all that jazz. It's interesting.
What I didn't like is [besides the mismatch of cover vs fmc] how the age of characters doesn't collarate with how they act. There are times when they seem more off as teenagers than actual adults.
And lastly. It was confusing how Amber calls her adoptive family 'loving and caring' where they just put her down most of the time...I'm guessing it's also the same reason why she let Carson to be such an a$$hole towards her and just roll over and let it happen.
Second series I tried to read from this author. After looking at reviews I thought the author had to be one I’d enjoy.. Just wow… The main character in every series I’ve attempted to read have all been in their twenties. And every female lead is spineless and wishy washy. All men are made to look abusive in some form or manner unless they too are weak. None have the level of maturity you’d think would be required for a supernatural who’s always meant to be a savior or the end to something dark and dangerous. Every book is over done in detail and ADHD random disjointed thoughts with no actual action. Page after page of internal dialogue and description of things that genuinely don’t matter and have no impact in the storyline. The author could stick the entire action of the story into maybe two chapters (probably one and a half) The rest is literally mind numbing.
Then the author will throw in an entire physical scene that just seems like they’re slapping plagiarized sex scenes from popular books and seem copy and pasted from other series just switching the names..
I have no idea why there's a ginger on the cover when the FMC is half black and not a redhead. That's... odd... and not showing the representation you're writing.
Having said that, I love this series so far. I love when the FMC starts put meek and gains confidence in herself as she goes, and learns how she wants to be treated and what she doesn't find acceptable. She's a smart, strong, awesome chick and knows it by the end of the book. I also love the differences in the males and her GBF, Eli. He's my sugar pie, but the one I'd end up favoring forever is Silas. Give me strong, brilliant, odd and confident all day. He's so hot. So were Brayson and Oliver, but those two are kinda similar... just pretty, cocky guys. I'd like to see more of their personalities emerging in the second book, this was definitely a good "first book" though.
Already pre-ordered book 2, even though... again... there's a white redhead on the cover. 😒

I hate that she's such a push over, she literally does nothing to retaliate!
She did things with the guys without them talking once about sharing, and it's not that it's a common thing there either. She kissed and had sex for the first time with one of them right after her boyfriend broke up with her (she didn't even have the decency to break up with the piece of shit her self) and she didn't talk with him or anyone for that matter and told them that she's officially single so it's pretty much like cheating for me. And for those who related to Amber because of her "boyfriend" I hope you abanden all things go damp the shit out of your life.
And ha! I knew that Mr. Stenseth was suspicious!

I love the storyline and the world building/magic system are super interesting. It could use a little more work but I’m hoping that’s just cuz it’s the first book in the series 🤷🏻♀️ There are multiple typos that were enough to stand out, but not so much that it was crazy noticeable. All were more like spelling errors or wrong word to at was maybe a autocorrect issue?? Like sex instead of six type of thing 🤣 Also lost a star because of the cover. Why tf is there a white redhead on the cover of all 5 books in the series when the FMC is a black woman 👀 Literally wtf? Why not just provide true representation, not just for diversity but of the book itself?? Represented the frickin tiger on the cover but not the actual FMC 🙄 As a BIPOC I want more representation in fantasy but I want that true representation not this hiding it behind vague descriptions and a white person on the cover.
Sorry that got me heated, but yeah the book is good otherwise.
Has anyone else wondered why the girl on the cover is white with flaming hair and yet the FMC is black with decidedly not flaming hair? 🤔🤔🤔 Doesn’t impact the story at all, but I did find it odd. Whatever 😂😂😂
I enjoyed reading this book quite a lot. Our girl and her guys are something else and the way her relationship with each of them starts is unique. She’s the first female mage/witch in over 200 years so you know she’s going to be something extraordinary. Amber is a bit of a mess through most of the story, but she manages to pull herself together with the help of her guys, a few friends, and her tiger. How badass is that?
I liked how this book is a complete story even though it’s the first in a series. You still have to read them in order to understand references to past events in future stories, but there is a definite resolution and that is refreshing.
I enjoyed the book. It wasn't mind-blowing or hugely memorable, but I still enjoyed reading it. It has a couple of twists in it, so you may not know exactly what's going on (in a good way). It keeps you guessing a bit! I also love all of the main characters.
The main reason I ended up taking off a star was the spelling. There were a few spelling mistakes that I passed over because hey - they happen. However, by 40% in, I realized there were a few more than you would usually see in books, and a couple of times I had to reread the sentence to try to make sense of it before I realized it was a mistake (example, at one point the word was supposed to be "threat", but it was "treat" in the book). If there were two or three, I'd ignore it, but there were more, and that one I used as an example was pretty bad.
This is incredibly juvenile and boring. Nothing is consistent or cohesive. Amber… talks about the “bully’s” acting like 5 year olds when she herself seems to have a childish mindset and logic. There’s no grit to her at all! She’s apparently just a doormat for everyone and any time she does attempt to stand up for herself she just backs down again. She doesn’t like her boyfriend (he’s a pos so that makes sense) but talks about their relationship like it’s serious.. non of the characters feel real in any way. This reads more like the journal of a teenager who wants to be the main character. She recounts everything in her head over and over again. So we the readers are stuck reading the same crap multiple times.this book is just bad.
I loved the premise. Really enjoyed the characters however I did find the plot twist a little predictable. I found that some of the relationships were cute but a little insta-lovey. I enjoyed the banter between Amber and the boys but I would've loved to see a little more. I didnt like having no explanation explanation why it was normal for her to suddenly have 3 boyfriends. Most RHs I read at least mention it. And I would've loved to see more about her ex boyfriend finding about about her dating 3 new guys after they broke up. I found their break up lacked any impact. It was almost pointless to have him as a character. All in all, I enjoyed the book.

The story concept seemed really cool so I was excited to read this. It was…ok. The FMC was clearly written without functional eyeballs in her head because she kept literally running into everyone and hurting herself, or maybe the author was using that as a convenient way to have two characters interact? I dunno but it was a thing lol and the use of the word “um” was out of control. I liked the tiger familiar, that was cool. I do think it’s weird the cover art doesn’t match the FMC at all. Not sure if this book will compel me to read book 2 since it seems like most of the mystery is solved already.
I downloaded Made for Magic, book 1 of the Makings of a Witch series, as a Kindle Unlimited loan from Amazon. This story about the first witch born in hundreds of years, had so much potential, but suffered from continuity/description issues as well as a main female character who jumped to conclusions and made illogical choices (not to mention, too accepting of thinks a normal person would object to). The world-building and writing style was okay, but the writer needs to learn to track things such as physical descriptions.
I'm not going to talk about how the FMC is a black girl but the cover has a different character on it for the ENTIRE series.
Moving somewhere that may or may not exist that's 5 hours away?? Your sister doesn't even wait for a confirmation if you're there or not before driving off??? What???
That break-up was so underwhelming.
Sleeps with 3 "guys" in the first month of her being there and there's no communication between them whatsoever about them being okay with this or not.
That's it with our villain? Anticlimactic asl.
Is a doormat.
Will definitely not be reading the next books.

Even though all of the characters are legally adults they're all written like they're in high school. There's not really a Reverse Harem, it's really just a chick who's dating three different guys but she didn't really have a consensual discussion about dating multiple people, it kind of just happens. Also she apparently can fuck all of them without using a condom. The writing is subpar but the storyline is interesting.

Couldn't get into this due to the characters being referred to as "the brunette" or "the senior" and these were the names used for the main male characters. It's a single POV from the FMC and she's not quite rounded out . It sounded promising and you need to try it, it just wasn't for me I struggled to finish it. Some good bits, but lack of consistency using the guys names and that really annoyed me.
So I really love the storyline of this book I've read a few with similar storylines and I've always liked them. The problem that I had reading this book is just some of the words that were used. These were 21 and older college aged men and women and throughout the whole book they're all referred to as girls and boys and so my brain kept coming up with them being in high school instead of with adults. Otherwise I love the story.
DNF I really just couldn't get into this. The characters felt way too immature and the flow was really slow. This is the second book by this author that I did not finish, I think the writing style from her is just not to my taste.
At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
I loved reading this book. It was my second go around reading it now that the series is complete. I’m shocked I didn’t review it before. I was on the edge of my seat each chapter. I loved how there was a balance of good and bad. The only thing I think could make the book better was if it was a multiple POV, instead of first person pov. Take a chance. You won’t regret it!
Fmc was pretty much a punching bag for everyone and just run over be it in conversation or action. I couldn’t stand any of the characters presented.
The writing wasn’t gripping and honestly 50 pages in I should have cared about something. I didn’t, by the time she got to the magic school I was done. The tiger was the most interesting part and it was a blip and not a good enough one to keep me reading.
His book wasn't a story. It was a series of events strung together by a fmc who was always confused and may be physically strong but mentally weak. Now I will tolerate a bully redemptin romance. keyword" tolerate". This was beyond that.
There was not any relationship building or redemption, just a jerk being a jerk. But as these new novels go, he was so hot we can ignore nasty treatment.
I have been searching for strong female main male character, disappointed again.
