Set in 1950, Otis Adair is a WWII veteran who relates his memories and experiences as he searches for paintings which were to be his inheritance. Where are the paintings and why are they being hidden? Most important, how will he secure them? Otis meets a whole cast of eccentric characters on his journey, including a mobster with honor, a crazy sister-in-law, a wise old man with a sixth sense, and a besotted woman who attempts suicide. After returning home to southern Illinois, he and his love, Mavis, work to unravel the mystery of the missing paintings.
I really enjoyed this book! I am a distant relative of the author and grew up in the southern Illinois area featured in this book. Our beloved relative "Oscar Thomas" makes an appearance as a minor character, but I was thrilled to run into him in this story. I loved the time I got to spend with this book and the familiar setting. This is a wonderful debut novel!
