Awesome! I love the charts and notes in this Bible. Some of the things that are included are How to Study the Bible, A Guide to Christian Workers, a Topical Index, a Concordance, In Between the Two Testaments, and much, much more. I'm especially thrilled with the Guide to Christian Workers. I noticed that there was a section on suicide. There's a section on so many questions that people might ask that I cannot answer without just a little bit of help. I will never be done reading this book.
The Open Bible is a well loved resource for many people. It has been around for years, but Thomas Nelson has recently released an updated version of the KJV, NKJV, and now the NIV. I was thrilled to receive a copy of this beloved tool in the NIV translation. My copy is the black leathersoft edition. It has perimeter stitching, and “The Open Bible” and “NIV” on the spine in gold. It has gold page gilding, and two double sided satin ribbons in red and black. The font is a 9 point comfort print. I feel that the font does read a bit small, but it is nice and bold. I do not enjoy the NIV comfort print quite as much as I do the NKJV comfort print, but I have no trouble reading it. It has a sturdy sewn binding. Even with all of the resources included in this Bible, I still feel that I would be able to carry it to church with me if I chose to do so.
The Open Bible is known for topical index that contains 8,000+ places, names, concepts, events, and doctrines. This is found in the front of the Bible, and is a wonderful tool for Bible study. It is a way to study scripture using scripture. Each book has an extensive book introduction that includes an overview of the book, information about the author and time period, key words, verses, and chapters, and an outline. My favorite part of the book introductions is the section that talks about Christ in each book. The Bible is God’s love story to us, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the Trinity is alive and active in every book, not just the Old Testament. I love that the Open Bible brings that to our attention in the book introductions by showing Christ in every book.
Along with the resources already mentioned, there are also several articles included in this Bible, such as How to Study the Bible, The Parables of Jesus Christ, Laws of the Bible, The Scarlet Thread of Redemption, and the Guide to Christian Workers. There is also a lengthy concordance. References are found at the bottom of each page. It is a red letter text. Although I prefer black letter text, Thomas Nelson always does a nice job making sure that the red letter text is consistent and dark, so I have no problem owning and reading their red letter Bibles.
The Open Bible is a treasure that you will want to add to your bookshelf of Bibles and Bible study resources. It is a Bible that you could get lost in studying because of all of the articles and helps included. The topical index alone is enough to grab a copy of this Bible. I am glad that Thomas Nelson decided to publish this Bible in the NIV translation, to give more options and to reach even more people. The NIV Open Bible will be staying on my desk for use during my personal study time.
I received a copy of this Bible from Thomas Nelson, in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
