Turkey hunting is different. The humbling of nature, found only in the season of spring, is universally understood by those who hunt wild turkeys with a burning passion. There is an associated obsession, within the souls of turkey hunters, that is distinctly different than the mindset of those pursuing deer, duck, or any other realm of wild game. This book was written to celebrate, acknowledge, and ultimately pay respect to those who embrace the sounds, feelings, and appreciations that are experienced while chasing these birds. Through a series of stories, lessons learned the hard way, and a few unfortunate situations, you will find both helpful tips and entertainment from the author's outlook toward spring turkey season, as he enlightens upon his journey. Some advice and how to is also provided for turkey calling, setup strategies, camouflage patterns, roosted gobblers, and more. Through memories complied from traveling across the southeastern and central states of the US, from his hometown in Mississippi, the author seeks to cure an addiction to the outdoor lifestyle, while providing a unique understanding to the heritage, history, and fulfillment found within the swamp bottoms of public land hunting areas. Each individual chapter is a new journey, as they meticulously unfold how the mind of a southern turkey hunter processes the spring woods, and the perceptions that eventually lead the author to create what is now known as Spring Legion.
I really would have given this a 3 star review, without two empty coffee cups. That chapter to me captured what it was like to hunt while you are in college. While I have not been in the situation the author was in, the mental gymnastics he did was familiar to me and made me remember college hunting and smile.
I respect Hunter for putting his thoughts together but this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Hunter essentially says anyone who isn't ruining their professional or personal lives is not a true woodsman or turkey hunter. Is taking a picture of your turkey and posting it to social media really that bad? At the end of the day, the book is poorly written and filled with all sorts of grammatical errors. Heavy price tag of $30 for a self-published book coupled with the promotion of his podcast. Cash grab.
Fantastic story telling. What a fun read gearing up for opener. You can see a lot of Tom Kelly influence in his style of writing. Turkey hunting is an ancient American crutch on which the culture of the southern United States hunting rests and this book does it justice. I am honored to be included. If you read this book and don’t understand the very serious and often fatal obsession known as the turkey bug or are repulsed by the idea of committing years of one’s life to chasing around an iridescent brown feathered bird in the woods, then this book probably isn’t for you. God bless the turkey hunter
