Nicole writes stories exploring concepts of surveillance and how it effects human behavior, colonization, AI, robots, and a bunch of other impossible but cool scenarios. She studied folklore in college and believes that the best parts of any story touch on these living, changing elements of culture.
This is the 7th book in this series. I might have missed one somewhere along the line, but I have read almost all of them.
The books are advertised as "steampunk space opera," and I have no idea what that means or whether they are that or not. There is also a bit in the blurb linking this with Firefly. I do not get that reference at all. Maybe it means that if you like sci fi you will like this. I can think of other shows that this resembles a LOT more than Firefly. Maybe Leverage...
To me, this series is less seven books and more like 1 longer book with parts. That is not always bad, if you really want to invest in the entire series and just hang in there. If you like books that have a start and an end, whether part of a series or not, this may not be for you. Most of these books have a VERY soft ending or no real ending at all.
The writing is decent and the story makes you want to keep turning pages. There are no editing problems, here. The characters are generally likable, which is important particularly in a series.
One thing that I am a little concerned about after hanging in there for the series is that characters are not always true to their historical portrayal. There is dissension and suspicion between characters where it should not be, after all this time, imo. There is enough animosity from outside without inventing it inside, as well. I guess I will need to read the next installments to see if that makes sense in the greater story arc.
I enjoyed reading this book. While I would recommend reading the others in the series first, I was able to follow the story, and the characters but do think knowing more of the backstory would have made it even more enjoyable. With an interesting cast of characters and lots of action I will enjoy seeing where the story goes in subsequent books. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and unbiased review.
It’s such a good feeling to head to the six moons and follow Holly Drake, her crew and friends. This time she’s searching for a kidnapped friend. Lots of action and Holly has to endure more than one space ship ride. The ending is super good as is seeing places we’ve not seen before. Loved every page!
