The story is getting a bit confusing and I don't care about all the side characters' back stories, tbh... And a lot of like random things are happening and random people are being introduced for like a chapter and then they're like... gone??? Like what's the point???
It doesn't help that everybody looks... kinda the same? I mean I love love love Arina Tanemura's art, but the girls all look the same and the boys all have the same names 😭 how am I supposed to tell them apart 😭😭???
Also I have so many questions... like...
If at least some of the people know that she can transform... why is nobody asking questions? like do they just accept that she can literally change form??? 🤌 Also why is every single man in this story in love with her and trying to kiss her when she is literally 12???? 💔 I mean I know she transforms into a 16 yo but actually she's still 12???? And some of the characters know???? 🤢
Anyway it looks like the plot is wrapping up and the main story is continuing, which is great because I understood like half of what happened in the last two volumes 😩
Am I just dumb lol??? 😭😭😭

I decided to finish the series. They only take like an hour a read and there was only 2 left. This way I can feel safe in the knowledge that they're all bad. 99% of my issues with it would be solved if the mc were 10 years older but no, she's a child and he's not. Why was this so normal in the early 2000s? Is this still normal for shojo? I haven't really read much new stuff. Anyway don't read this series. It hasn't aged well (not that it started out fine but you get what I mean)

The story just gets more and more weird. So we see Mitsuki back with her grandmother which is long overdue. Hasn't this woman been beside herself with worry all this time?

More weird feelings for each other. Too many side stories. I'm glad to see others reviewing this volume are likewise confused by some of this - it's not just me. Will finish this out because I want to see how it all ends.

Review for complete series

Twelve-year-old Mitsuki loves to sing - but a tumour in her throat and her overprotective grandmother prevent her from pursuing any serious music career. One day, two figures glide through her bedroom wall and introduce themselves as shinigami - angels of death - who have come to investigate some strange circumstances of her upcoming death. Knowing that she will die in a years time, Mitsuki entreats the shinigami to help her become a singer before her time runs out. She does not, however, tell them that it is more than just her love for singing that drives her.

This is one of the few manga where I can tell a big difference between my perception of it now compared to when I first read it some odd ten years ago. It was one of my first manga and it was a big favourite of mine - nowadays it is still a favourite, though to a certain extent more due to nostalgia. Some of the things that already bothered me ten years ago bother me even more now. However, it is still a lovely and heartfelt manga that I would prefer over many others.

I like Mitsuki as a character. She can be incredibly naive but I find it more believable in her considering her age and the fact that she's had a very sheltered life. I love how she is a tad traditional and even starts crying if someone starts cursing. I wouldn't call her a particularly strong character, though she does go through quite a bit of character development. At least her attitude towards life and death changes considerably.

The shinigami are a fun bunch of characters. The two main ones, Takuto and Meroko, who first introduce themselves to Mitsuki add a lot of fun to the series. Later we also get Izumi who comes across as rather sinister until he falls in with the rest. Although these characters are fun, much like Mitsuki, they have their own secrets and dark past.

Essentially, I feel as though Full Moon wo Sagashite goes into two very different directions - on one hand, it's a fun story of a twelve-year-old who gets to be a singer by the help of angels with animal characteristics. There's a lot of shenanigans with transformations, hiding true identities and coming up with enough cover up lies. But then, on the other hand, it tells a dark tale of lost opportunities, suicide, betrayal and terminal illnesses. I can't help but feel that these two don't work all that well together.

Most of the characters have a dark past - or so it would seem. I find that some of the 'sad' stories aren't all that sad and are trying to be more dramatic than what they actually are. But then, some of the other scenes are truly sad and can really give you that pang in the heart.

Idols always seem to be a popular theme for manga, and it's a theme I've never cared for much. Full Moon wo Sagashite is a unique one among them in that it doesn't have its main focus on the petty rivalry between the stars. It is more about the characters and their relationships, family, friendship and love. I loved the system behind the shinigami and Mitsuki was just the right character to be among them. So despite its shortcomings, it is still - and probably always will be - one of my favourite manga. Oh, and I love the art!

Mitsuki mau ngadain konser. Untuk itu dia bekerja sama dengan seorang make up artist ternama yang pernah jadi model populer, Hikari. Nah, ternyata Hikari ini pacarnya Takuto. Seharusnya dia putus sama cowok ini. Tapi terus Takuto bunuh diri sehingga mereka nggak sempat ngomong.

Tapi meski udah nunggu lama, Takuto malah gak dateng-dateng. Ternyata pas mau berangkat, Takuto tabrakan sama Hikari. Hikari langsung nyeret Takuto buat nemenin dia main, nggak peduli kalau Takuto ada janji sama orang lain. Takuto terpaksa ikut karena Hikari ngancem bakal bunuh diri kalau ditinggal.

Haaaah....

Apalagi kalau ingatan Takuto soal Hikari balik. But no. Semuanya selesai dengan begitu saja.

Nenek Mitsuki lalu bilang kalau dia udah nerima keputusan cucunya buat jadi penyanyi.

Namun, Mitsuki malah dibawa Izumi menemui bosnya, Shielda. Nyawa Mitsuki kali ini benar-benar dalam bahaya.

Aku nggak paham kenapa cacat logika Full Moon wo Sagashite parah sekali dan menyebar di banyak bagian. What the hell, proses editorialnya gimana???

So, shit is going down big time!

Mitsuki is about to do a big concert and the woman who designs her costumes, Hikari, was Takuto’s girlfriend before his death. That gets in the way of Takuto and Mitsuki going on a first, unofficial date.

I don’t think Hikari was necessary as a character, to be honest, she is barely even one. She exists solely as a plot device to make Mitsuki jealous and to push her to finally admit that despite not being over Eichi, she has developed feelings for Takuto. I’m glad Mitsuki finally starts to admit to herself that she is falling for Takuto, but I think that could have happened without throwing in another girl.

Due to all the stress Mitsuki breaks down and is taken to the hospital, where she is finally reunited with her grandmother. That was long overdue. She also decides that she wants to get an operation, and that she wants to live, even if it costs her voice. It’s an interesting parallel to Takuto who decided to get an operation immediately, but with the promise to keep his voice. Mitsuki is now in the position that all cards are on the table, she knows the consequences she could suffer and still makes the decision.

To keep her safe, Meroko and Takuto go back to the world of the Shinigami and plan to erase Mitsuki’s name from the death list, so no Shinigami can ever find her again and take her soul, even if that means parting with her forever. Too late they realize it has been a trap set by Izumi to lure them away from Mitsuki. Poor Izumi has been through so much already and is now somewhat controlled by Jonathan, who has been the boss of the Shinigami all along. I loved that twist the first time and I still love it now. Jonathan was always a weird comic relief character, but turns out he has been the one in charge all along. His real name is Sheldon, which sounds about as intimidating as you can guess. Why, Arina, why?

In other news, Ohshige and Waka-ouji finally confess their feelings for each other and start dating, yay.

The volume also includes a short story about Madoka and Nachi and reveals them to know each other from childhood. The whole beauty surgery thing is still weird, but Madoka and Nachi are absolutely adorable together.

On to the last one!

So... a lot is happening in this one... uh... Ms. Oshige finally gets her happily ever after with Dr. Wakaoji. Takuto still claims he loves Mitsuki even though she claims she's still in love with Eichi, but she agrees to go on a date with him, only for it to get sidetracked when he runs into his ex.

Yeah... a dead shinigami's date with a 13-year-old gets interrupted by his ex-girlfriend.

Meanwhile, we've got Jonathan's betrayal and Izumi's strange behavior just before Takuto and Meroko go to the underworld to take Mitsuki's name off the ledger of the dead, but turns out it was a trap...

I blinked and suddenly this story went from shojo drama to supernatural action.

There's also an extra chapter featuring Madoka's happily ever after.

This series has 7 volumes.

Meinung

Mitsuki entwickelt Gefühle für Takuto. Doch Takuto begegnet seiner alten Freundin, was Mitsuki verunsichert.

I spent the whole first half of this trying to put together the timeline, cause it doesn't make sense to me. His old girlfriend being 22, Mitsuki being 12 and Takuto having died before Eichi did, I'm just not sure on what's happening when. Regardless, there's still a LOT of child/adult love here, especially in this one, and I'm not a fan. This manga would be beautiful, if only it was about adults.

Now, the adult relationships, I like! Getting a happy ending for Ochige is so satisfying, and Madoka too. I loved those parts.

Definitely better than the last! However, it didn't quite hit the highs of earlier volumes.

I like that we get to see Mitsuki expressing her feelings for Takuto, they're really cute and their dynamic is great. I don't know if I prefer Takuto to Eichi though, something about the love and tragedy of Mitsuki and Eichi makes me heart really tremble.

The end is approaching, and I'm so curious as to what's going to happen.

It's been a few months since I read the first five volumes, so there were some minor things I'd forgotten. There were some really cute moments in this volume, but you can also tell things are starting to reach a conclusion. Solid volume.

Bah.

We're getting into the end now! Somewhat surprising seeing new characters and side stories continue to be introduced here. But Mitsuki gets reunited with some family (finally) and we see more of the Shinigami world which is interesting.

I loved the anime but man the mangaka definitely makes weird decisions with her story telling often seems like a 13 year old discovering fan fiction for the first time.
