Reread!

This volume has probably my favorite cover of the series, simply because of Izumi. I think if I had to choose a favorite character it came down between Izumi and Takuto.

Izumi is also the best part of this volume. Because other than his backstory it is easily the weakest so far. It’s not that the story Progression is bad or makes no sense, it just feels incredibly rushed and jumbled all over the place.

The Meroko issue is solved by Mitsuki telling her that Meroko’s former love is not her maternal grandfather but the paternal one and that he never married her best friend Fuzuki. That really turns the "everybody is connected thing" ridiculous now. And how exactly did Mitsuki find out all of this? It’s never explained.

Izumi‘s backstory is probably the most tragic one. He died as a little boy, committed suicide to please his depressed mother whom he thought hated him. It’s dark and disturbing and it deserved way more exploration. Izumi is easily the most interesting character and I‘m kinda sad that his story was the one that got rushed. At least he finally warms completely up to Mitsuki and protects her now alongside Takuto and Meroko. They all truly start to feel like a family now.

The rest of the volume is dedicated to Fullmoon having a stalker who attacks people close to her to make he stop signing.

Ohshige gets hurt and drunkenly admits her feelings for Waka-ouji, he seemingly reciprocates until he finds out she sleeps with her boss. I admit they are cute together, but Ohshige also being a hardcore fangirl does make the relationship look a bit creepy.

Madoka is also back and she is cute now that she cares more about others. We also meet Nachi, singer of the group Oz. He is Mitsuki’s friend and Madoka‘s new love interest and he is great, apart from the fact that he randomly appears and they act like he has always been part of the characters. Takuto doesn’t know him which makes no sense since he is around Mitsuki almost 24/7 and while the character is likeable it feels like he is introduced too late into the game.

Due to the stalker issue Mitsuki finally admits that she wants to live. She has a breakdown, thinking she is responsible for the death or her parents and that her wish to live is a betrayal to Eichi, but Takuto manages to calm her down. It’s odd. It’s such a huge turnaround for the story, but it left me feeling nothing. After all the heavy emotional lifting of the last two volumes this just fell flat. It was rushed and Mitsuki’s sudden change of heart came too soon. There was just too much happening in this volume.

Then there is the plot twist regarding Jonathan. It was hinted at in the previous volume that something was going on with him and that starts to pay off now.

I don’t dislike this volume, it’s still good but not as strong as the others.

Izumi backstory wins the day on this one, but gosh, it's so disturbing. So is Mitsuki's feelings that living means turning her back on a promise. So many other characters get dramatic in this volume and now it's getting hard to keep track of them all. I feel like this story had a bunch of stuff added in throughout this volume just to pad out a storyline which really never had that much to it to begin with.

Oddly enough I still like the story and want to finish it out. It's just not the best thing I've read this year.

3.5. This one seemed better. I still have issues with the story. For one, I get really confused while reading it. It’s choppy and doesn’t always flow. The main problem I have is silly but the art, even though it’s so pretty, I canNOT tell the characters apart. Every female looks like Mistuki. Every blonde haired male looks like Eichi. There are slight differences in the eyes but the only difference between characters is the hair! That messes me up a lot lol

Review for complete series

Twelve-year-old Mitsuki loves to sing - but a tumour in her throat and her overprotective grandmother prevent her from pursuing any serious music career. One day, two figures glide through her bedroom wall and introduce themselves as shinigami - angels of death - who have come to investigate some strange circumstances of her upcoming death. Knowing that she will die in a years time, Mitsuki entreats the shinigami to help her become a singer before her time runs out. She does not, however, tell them that it is more than just her love for singing that drives her.

This is one of the few manga where I can tell a big difference between my perception of it now compared to when I first read it some odd ten years ago. It was one of my first manga and it was a big favourite of mine - nowadays it is still a favourite, though to a certain extent more due to nostalgia. Some of the things that already bothered me ten years ago bother me even more now. However, it is still a lovely and heartfelt manga that I would prefer over many others.

I like Mitsuki as a character. She can be incredibly naive but I find it more believable in her considering her age and the fact that she's had a very sheltered life. I love how she is a tad traditional and even starts crying if someone starts cursing. I wouldn't call her a particularly strong character, though she does go through quite a bit of character development. At least her attitude towards life and death changes considerably.

The shinigami are a fun bunch of characters. The two main ones, Takuto and Meroko, who first introduce themselves to Mitsuki add a lot of fun to the series. Later we also get Izumi who comes across as rather sinister until he falls in with the rest. Although these characters are fun, much like Mitsuki, they have their own secrets and dark past.

Essentially, I feel as though Full Moon wo Sagashite goes into two very different directions - on one hand, it's a fun story of a twelve-year-old who gets to be a singer by the help of angels with animal characteristics. There's a lot of shenanigans with transformations, hiding true identities and coming up with enough cover up lies. But then, on the other hand, it tells a dark tale of lost opportunities, suicide, betrayal and terminal illnesses. I can't help but feel that these two don't work all that well together.

Most of the characters have a dark past - or so it would seem. I find that some of the 'sad' stories aren't all that sad and are trying to be more dramatic than what they actually are. But then, some of the other scenes are truly sad and can really give you that pang in the heart.

Idols always seem to be a popular theme for manga, and it's a theme I've never cared for much. Full Moon wo Sagashite is a unique one among them in that it doesn't have its main focus on the petty rivalry between the stars. It is more about the characters and their relationships, family, friendship and love. I loved the system behind the shinigami and Mitsuki was just the right character to be among them. So despite its shortcomings, it is still - and probably always will be - one of my favourite manga. Oh, and I love the art!

I'll admit, this volume was kind of a letdown. Izumi's section felt rushed, and just wasn't as interesting or as satisfying as Meroko's and Takuto's. I also just did not care about the side ships that were so prevalent, the doc and manager are a boring and uninteresting pair. To be honest, I haven't really liked Mitsuki's manager after she was introduced and shown to be a drunk who wasn't the best at her job, and I don't think that image can just go away or be magically fixed because she gets hurt, and has a obsession with the doctor. I don't care about the weird love triangle between her, the boss, and Dr. Wakaoji, and I hope the last two volumes don't focus on it too much. The scenes with Nachi were a little weird too, correct me if I'm wrong, but he shouldn't be such good friends with Mitsuki when we've never even seen them hang once. The stalker segment was okay I suppose, but I'm a little over the trope where the MC gets all broody over something happening to their friends, even though their friends are okay, and they want to just give everything up. At least it wasn't dragged out like in other series.

Hopefully volume 6 will be better!

What's wrong with you?

I liked a lot about this volume, but...

The Izumi segment felt super rushed, so I'm hoping the next volume fleshes that out more. He's such an interesting character, and I'd like to see his backstory more developed.

I don't really understand the introduction of Nachi. He's presented as if he's always been around, so why doesn't Takuto know him or the fact that he's friends with Mizuki? The dude almost never leaves her side.

The stalker segment was interesting, and Mizuki is definitely evolving as a character now that her resolve over Eichi has started to shift toward more positive ends.

Meroko's broken heart is mended by friendship and the revelation of truth. Then it's time for us to learn about Izumi's tragic backstory. Trigger Warning for child abuse and suicide.

But we're quickly back to Mitsuki's rise to fame as she acquires a dangerous fan who not only threatens her friends, but also her own mental health. Although, personally, I'm more worried about Ms. Oshige because she's clearly being taken advantage of by her boss (and that other kiss didn't have consent either...)

But then the volume ends on a very tense cliffhanger.

This series has 7 volumes.

Maybe even more like 2.5 stars?

Ok I don't know if it's cause I took like a year break between reading volumes 4 and 5, but I just felt so confused reading this one. It felt rushed and jumbled, and big things like her manager essentially opening a bomb and Izumi's backstory got completely glossed over. Hoping to see some improvement in the last two volumes.

This one was less heavy on the child/adult love thing, which was nice. It felt a lot slower than previous volumes, but it was fine, overall. It kind of felt like a filler episode, which isn't really my favourite, but what can ya do.

I will say though, Izumis backstory 100% made me cry.

Everyone’s falling in love… I love seeing how gentle and sweet Takuto can be towards Mitsuki.. And I love how much all the shinigamis have come to love her. They just want to help her and be there for her…

Izumi's backstory was tragic and fantastic, definitely the highlight of the volume. The resolution to Meroko's backstory was nice but a bit jumbled. And the 'stalker' part of the story didn't do much for me. There's a lot going on in this volume and it's all over the place.

The first time I read this I loved Takuto so much and didn’t really like Izumi (part of that is that I watched the anime first), but after my re-read I really do like Izumi. Takuto will always be my favorite. Anime crushes as children are strong!
I honestly think Izumi’s backstory seemed odd. Did he age as a Shinigami? But otherwise, love Full Moon and love this volume.

My newest complaint about this series: The art is gorgeous, but why do all the adults look like teenagers? Seriously. The doctor must be in his thirties and he looks like he's fourteen.

Full Moon Sagashite #7
Arina Tanemura

My favorite part Is when a girl was crying and these spirits helped her when she was sad.
And I think that people should read it it’s because the full moon books are funny and fun and you read the books backwards. It was about a girl that can see deth spirits to make her dreams come true well it is not exactly a dream it is a promise to a guy.
