For years Anna Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study has been an essential tool for all budding naturalists but its large size made it impractical in the field. It has now been broken up into individual sections for easy portability. New full-color photos are included for those times that you're unable to see nature up close. This volume only features the introductory sections from the other volumes. If you have the others this is not necessary, but can be handy.
Anna Botsford Comstock (1854-1930) was an acclaimed author, illustrator, and educator of natural studies. The first female professor at Cornell University, her over 900-page work, The Handbook of Nature Study (1911), is now in its 24th edition. Comstock was an American artist and wood engraver known for illustrating entomological text books with her her husband, John Henry Comstock including their first joint effort, The Manual for the Study of Insects (1885). She wrote Confessions To A Heathen Idol, published in 1906, under the name Marian Lee.
This is the first time I have read the intro, and I had the realization that I am not very attentive to nature! There is so, so much in here that is around my eyes all the time, but for some reason, my eyes don’t see it. It’s like I’m walking around blind to what’s all around me! So much in here. I feel like I would have to read it 10 times just to get the surface of all of the knowledge in it!
