A Disgusting Supermarket of Death

Rate this book
A Disgusting Supermarket of Death collects hard-boiled shorts about satanic Christmas movies, performance-art euthanasia, child-sacrifice skincare, and other demented goodness from Jim Harberson, co-author of Markosia's acclaimed graphic novel, Stay Alive.

Among the characters you'll meet within are a corrupt prison warden who sells true-crime fanatics a serial killer meet and greet; healthcare workers who cause a massive car pile-up so they can murder its victims; and a Hollywood undertaker who sells rich perverts carnal access to recently departed celebrities.

Horror tinged with comedy, or comedy tinged with horror, these stories should delight even the most jaded speculative fiction fans.

A Disgusting Supermarket of Death (2021) by Jim Harberson is a collection of stories overflowing with darkly intriguing and obscenely provocative ideas. Boasting twenty-two stories full of dark comedy, horrifying consequences, and outlandish conceits. Here you’ll find tales of healthcare workers responsible for massive car wrecks in order to murder their victims, extreme haunted houses where the scares are a little too real, retirement communities that bathe their residents in orphan blood, as well as clones secretly harbouring serial killer identities and homicidal urges. Every single story has a premise that is wildly inventive and compelling. Unfortunately, it’s in the execution that they begin to fall apart.

A Disgusting Supermarket Of Death by Jim Harberson is a collection of horror short stories with a wide range of topics. There are a lot of goodies packed into the pages of this book. We get Christmas movies from hell, some truly twisted health care workers, and a lot more disgusting and gruesome merchandise within this supermarket.

Overall, I liked a bunch of the stories, but felt a bit let down with others. This is completely normal for me in short story collections. You can’t please everyone. I do think that every single story had a really interesting and promising premise, but some of them didn’t deliver in the end.

That being said, these short stories are definitely not for the faint of heart and if you love macabre tales, you might just like this book!

A gorgeous bouquet of a book, celebrating mindfulness and wellness and those quiet moments of contemplation that lend rich meaning to each day if you only stop...and listen to the love in your heart. Jim Harberson is a poet, a scholar and a people person, and this book (more of a zen meditation, really) captures that - and more! Brew up a mug of herbal tea, grab your cat and a comfy chair and some flannel pajamas, and retrace the path of the Buddha with your new sensei. Sure, you might regret it, but that's half the fun. Om. Shanti. Om.

I love a collection of horror short stories especially if they are from the same author. This collection has just about something for everyone. It’s weird, strange and creepy stories will wrap you up like a horror hug. Not too gory or going for any hard shock value, it’s a collection of intelligent stories that really shows this authors mastery of language, setting and excellent story telling. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

This is one of the most unique, super creative types of storytelling I came across the horror genre recently. An essential read for any horror reader.

The book is scary not only because of the themes explored in it, but because what's happening in the stories, is probably happening somewhere in the world as you read....

James, thank you for sending this for review. A fantastic reading experience.

Incredibly entertaining! I read it cover to cover in one sitting. I highly recommend it with 5 stars.

The stories are brief and creative, with exactly the sort of creepy, gore spattered mess you can expect from the brilliant Jim Harberson. The tales are twisted and unique. A perfect vacation read for those who can handle it. If the title alone wasn't enough, now you've officially been warned. Not for those with weak constitutions.

This book of short stories comes from a unique author- part Crumb, part Heinlein, part Clive Barker. Written with a wink and a nod, this is a great introduction to the macabre. It's right at home with Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow. It's a fun read and worth your time!

A variety of stories come together here which, sadly, do not include a supermarket. The stories themselves truly run the gamut. The good ones are really good, whereas the not so good ones are a bit more..."meh."

Overall, I would say it was worth the time to read through it. Given that they're short stories, it's not like you're stuck with a particularly bad one for very long and there is (most likely) a good one coming up.
