In January 1837, ten sailors from the ship Coromandel absconded while it was anchored at Holdfast Bay in South Australia. The ship brought the first settlers to the new colony which was founded in December the previous year. History records the names of the men and that they fled to the hills where they kept watch for the departure of their vessel. Nothing is known of them or how they survived fifty days in a valley that was later named after their ship. This work of fiction, based on diaries and other historical records, attempts to describe one possible scenario of their escape and survival.
