The sea didn’t have her long enough to ravage her broken body. Her beauty is still intact, her pale lips slightly parted in the memory of her last breath, her dark hair clinging to her face in long, wavy strands. Every inch of her skin bears testimony of her terrifying fate at the hands of the man who never expected her to be found.

After the body of a brutally murdered young woman is recovered from the Gulf of Mexico far from shore, FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett is called in to assist with the profiling of the murderer. Although only one body has been found, every detail about the gruesome crime points to the work of a serial killer.

Have there been others, left to die far at sea, where no one will ever find them? Is there a connection to be found, or is Tess searching for evidence that doesn’t exist?

Partnering with Detective Michowsky, Tess is frantically looking for answers in the case that left no evidence other than a body that was never supposed to be found. How many others perished like her? And how many others will?

A Gripping Serial Killer Thriller...

Best-selling author Leslie Wolfe weaves another suspenseful and gripping crime thriller. With intriguing twists and turns it captivates the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a riveting and mesmerizing story in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a quick fast-paced novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.

I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the story in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a well written thriller with perfect pacing. Not much is as it appears here, which is just the way fans of the mystery, thriller and suspense will want it.

Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

Size doesn't matter.
Yeah, most of us prefer a full length novel to a novella, but I suggest you don't pass this one up. Of course things happen quickly in a shorter story but this book is every bit as engrossing as the longer iterations. In my opinion the Tess Winnett series remains in the top three in this genre.

Another hit

I really enjoy this series. I wish they were longer, as they speed by when reading. Ms. Wolfe can sure pack a lot of excitement and anticipation in a small story. If you are a fan of this series then this one will not disappoint.

FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett is called to assist with the profiling of a murderer when a body is recovered from the Gulf of Mexico. Even though only the one body has been found, Tess’s instincts cry out this is the start of a serial killer. She knows more women will die if she doesn’t catch the killer.

This novella made the time on the treadmill fly. It was fast-paced and held my interest throughout. I read reviews complaining it was “too short”, but it’s clearly labeled as a novella, so I’m not sure what others were expecting. The writing is tight, the pace fast, and the ending a surprise. It left me wanting more, which is a good thing.

Tess is a strong central character. She’s had a hard life, but she uses that experience in solving crimes. She’s got some insecurities, but despite what’s going on in her head or her personal life, she’s the consummate professional when it comes to The Job. I liked the relationship with her partner, Michowsky. She’s his superior, but she treats him like a partner rather than an underling, and he never condescends to her or pats her on the head when she’s working an angle.

I read this out of order, but didn’t feel lost. I think it would probably be even better in order, but you could start with this one and still enjoy the characters and the story. I will read more by this author.

Still good!

Leslie solve has the right formula, fast-paced and on point! I love these novellas, with Tess Winnet being an awesome FBI agent who knows her stuff. Although the stories are short they deliver everything you need to feel satisfied with a thriller novel. I'm looking forward to my next adventure with Tess at the wheel!

Just a short novel. Good plot but lacking intrigue this time. One of many similar novels by Leslie Wolf.

This is a shocking serial killer storyline, with only the accidental finding of a young woman’s body far from shore in the Gulf of Mexico, highlighting the fact a killer is operating in the area. FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett is called in to help with the case, after the body is recovered by the Coast Guard, by Detective Gary Michowsky of Palm Beach County PD, who realised they needed her specialised help as soon as he saw the body. The woman’s body had lots of injuries that were inconsistent with her being killed in any normal manner and raised more questions than answers about how she died. Doc Rizza, the coroner, reckoned that she must have fallen from a great height, as it seems almost every bone in her body was broken. Given how far out to sea her body was found, it could only have been from a plane, but it is impossible to open a plane door on modern planes, so they have no idea how it could have happened.

Only the chance passing of a couple in a boat within hours of her body being dumped and the way in which she ended up in the water, stopped her body from just disappearing beneath the waves. Tess believes that this is unlikely to be the killer’s first victim and agrees with Gary that they are looking for a serial killer. They have to identify the woman and trace her movements before her death, to find any likely suspects. This soon leads them to a killer who treats women with distain, carrying out his own vendetta against a surrogate for his real hate, but also his sick wishes and sexual needs.

It is only a short story, but it covers a hard hitting topic and is well written, telling the tale from the serial killer and Tess’ points of view and giving you clues as to what the killer has done and some of the reasons behind it. Tess is great at her job as usual and has to stop the killer before they kill again! A short, sharp look behind a serial killer’s state of mind and some of what drives them to do what they do. Easy to read and with a good pace behind it. I would recommend it to others, especially if they have read any of the authors other books or like a good murder investigative read.

MY REVIEW 4.5 STARS

I just finished reading this third novella to be released this year in Leslie Wolfe's popular FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett book series. All three were outstanding. I would recommend to anyone who has read this installment (or one of the other two for that matter) to go back and read the four full-length novels featuring FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett. Winnett is a strong female lead and a woman who has proven that she is a survivor. As a reader of crime fiction in general, and an aficionado of police procedurals and serial killer thrillers in particular, I have an aversion to the flawed protagonists who have populated this genre (and sub-genres) for so long now. I mean this in a non-sexist way and it goes for male leads as well their female counterparts. The notable exception of course is that the hero (or heroine) has suffered a horrible fate but has subsequently recovered from the trauma and is now hitting on all six cylinders. Tess is just this sort of protagonist. Readers who go back and read the full length novels will appreciate her journey out of hell and into her current world of quasi normalcy. She is an incredibly intuitive and talented criminal profiler who has stubbornly refused to join the behavioral sciences at Quantico because of residual insecurities. Winnett is brash and bold, exhibits a "take no prisoners" approach to evil wherever she finds it. Her braggadocio hides her vulnerability like a lead shield, and her amazing profiler skills and brilliant intellect invariably carries the day. In short, FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett is a lead character that you will find yourself loving but occasionally wanting to smack her upside the head for her acerbic remarks delivered at the "good guys".

Wolfe has a special affinity for writing imaginative yet realistic ”nail biting" thrillers that feature serial predators. In a typical outing by this author, the reader will experience the mounting horror of the victim(s), explore the depths of the disturbed psyche of the sociopathic killer as he relives his murders and as he stalks his new prey. The author is a master at alternating the third person narrative to focus on the viewpoints of victim, killer, and hunter. The reader will of course be privy to the astute observations and investigative skills of Winnett while compulsively turning the pages due to the rapidly escalating pace of the narrative. Wolfe does an incredible job with the above described technique. In fact, her serial killers are fleshed out so well in many cases that you can almost feel their breath on your neck.

In MILE HIGH DEATH we find an Ed Kemper scenario that is totally believable, and a serial predator that is totally chilling. Fans of forensic science will enjoy the pathology of what happens to a body falling from 1000 feet into an ocean below. It's actually gruesome and not since Ted Dekker's Bestselling BONEMAN'S DAUGHTERS have fractures of the human body been so fascinating. In this outing Winnett uses her mental acumen and a generous helping of guile (and not her service weapon) to end the flourishing career of this story's monster. MILE HIGH DEATH felt more like a novella than the prior two installments did, but that isn't so much a criticism as it is an observation.

Thoroughly enjoy the works of Leslie Wolfe and at the risk of redundancy I would note that she is perhaps one of the more underrated authors in the crowded field of psychological suspense and crime fiction.

The master of suspense is back with another great read. I really love Leslie Wolfe's books especially the Tess Winnett series, she is such a strong character that doesn't take an prisoners. I was a little bit disappointed with this book only because it didn't seem very long or I read it to quickly. Either way the story didn't lose any of its impact and moves along very quickly and skilfully and I loved it. The story is told by the killer as he hunts his next victim and by Tess as she tries to stop him, I think this works well as it gives you an insight into what the killer is thinking and why he does what he does. For anyone familiar with this series Ferdella, Donovan and even Cat are sadly missing from this book, so no banter between agents but Tess's skill more than makes up for it. I can't wait for the next book but please can it be a bit longer.
When the body of a woman is found floating in the sea, FBI agent Tess Winnett is called in because there is no way this is the killers first victim. With very little evidence to go on and only the idea that there must be other bodies Tess must retrace her footsteps and hope that leads to finding out who the other victims are. First she will have to work out how she died. Will questioning her work colleagues lead them to a lead? With her boss acting shifty and the hotel she stayed at while on a business trip bing less than helpful Tess feels time is running out for another girl.

I really hope this is the last she'll write in this great series as a novella......I never read books with fewer than 200 pages as a rule as they have no time to get really into the meat of things and I'm just left feeling like "was that it ?" This tale is a good one but could have been SO much better just fleshed out a bit more into a full novel. The next one in the series is at long last (after 3 novellas) a decent length but I think if she reverts to chopping them back again I'll give up with them. Such a shame as she writes great stories and I have a lot invested in Tess Winnett in particular. I do plan to try her newer series as well.
This one also ends at 80% again, too, irritatingly. I always like how she titles each and every one of her chapters as opposed to numbering them. In her chapter list at the beginning her new book is mentioned, though they wrote The Girl From Silen Lake......a pity nobody spotted that as it's a crashing error. I found it hard to believe that Tess wouldn't be aware that some planes have bedrooms on board as well. And how does she think parachutists get out of planes ? THEY go through a door !!!
I spotted one missed word in "...as capital offender" but that was it. All in all, just too short. We never learned what happened to another person involved, either. So, as I said, great series but lose the novellas !!

Boaters find a woman's body in the Caribbean over a hundred miles from shore, a case of extremely bad luck for the killer, considering the vastness of the sea. Detective Gary Michowsky requests help from FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett, because he believes the homicide bears the signature of a serial killer. The coroner finds multiple fractures and determines the body was dumped from an aircraft flying at a high altitude. Tess agrees with Michowsky's suspicions and an investigation ensues. The victim's last days are traced and the net closes on a likely suspect. The crosshairs of the investigation center on a billionaire, who happens to be a pilot. He has an alibi for the timeframe of the woman's death, but Tess remains suspicious and refuses to give up, trusting her gut. Once again, the author creates an intriguing villain and reveals his motivations in depth. Some of his actions seem a bit far-fetched even for a psychopath, however.

The seventh installment of Tess Winnett is, again, a novella. I feel this is another of the novellas that had so much potential yet was too short to reach that full potential. This murder is wildly articulate, almost perfectly executed. The killer takes his victims up in his private plane, flies over the ocean then on auto pilot is able to fly low and slow enough to open the boarding door to throw the bodies into the sea. They are at the bottom of the ocean as fish food before anyone even knows they’re missing. What an MO! A very creative and devious killer indeed! While the murders themselves are interesting, again with the novellas, I was wanting more. The profiling is again meager, this killer hates his wife and kills women that look like her as revenge and preparation for her murder. My favorite of the Tess Winnett novellas (books 5-7) but still felt flat!

Myra Lambert, a Fortune 500 assistant has accepted a ride back to Miami from Richard Sanford on his private jet. No economy class plane ride back for this girl! Yes, she knew he was married, but how many chances does a girl get to be with a drop-dead gorgeous man and a private jet? Little did Myra know she would never walk off that plane or any other plane. This would be her last flight. Can Tess and Michowsky figure out the who and the why to this girl's death? After all, Richard planned this so carefully, Myra should never have been found like all the other girls he killed. Read the book for the cat and mouse game played by the killer and the FBI.

Very short, serial killer novella that rushes through to the ending

Leslie Wolfe’s “books” are getting shorter, and this one is rushed to the quickie denouement. This reads like a first draft of a story that was meant to be expanded, so there would’ve been time to develop the plot and characters.

In the past, when I reviewed another Leslie Wolfe book, I suggested that she get a medical consultant. This time she needed a private aviation buff or a pilot, because a body is dumped whilst a business jet is in flight. The Gulfstream G650 has extended range capabilities, but I doubt it can perform the aviation “tricks” required by the plot.

Good bookd

These books about Tess Winnet FBI agent are really good. I enjoyed them because she so smart, a lot smarter than the criminals. My only disappointment is the books turned into novellas. The books ends before you really get into it. I miss the action provided by the local cops. I mis the interaction of the characters. The books were so much better when all characters were included and more suspense and action were involved. There is really no way go get involved in the plot and it is so simple you determine the ending early on. I will read the novellas, but I just don't really enjoy them like I did before.

Pretty good

Another good novella by Leslie. Nice, fast paced, with a satisfying ending. My only gripe is M's daughter. She's taking diet pills? In this day and age? Is unrealistic, not to mention incredibly unhealthy. I hope people don't read this and think it's okay to take them. I thought that weird bit was strange in the story, as well as her pregnancy scare. It was a passing second of plot, if that. Just really strange segment overall. Other than that, it was good. I do miss the longer books though.

You can't go wrong with Leslie Wolfe. I love her Tess Winnett series. (I also love the Vegas girl series) OK, I like them all :) I am thrilled this was Novella, because it was intense! Needed the respite after it was finished. I want to point out again, this is a Novella as several people had complained it was short. This is a true thriller from page 1 to the last page. I highly recommend you do your self a favor and read this book if you like thrillers, suspense and page turner. Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.

Mile High Death: An absolutely enthralling crime thriller novella (Tess Winnett), my fourth read from author Leslie Wolfe. I own 20 other books by this author & after reading this one they just moved higher on my TBR list. A well-written enjoyable psychological ihriller. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author and in particular other books in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Heart clinching! Breath taking!
Fasten your seatbelts belt as Mile High
Death will take you on fast paced, action
packed thriller.
A body is found floating way out in the
Gulf of Mexico. The woman was brutally
murdered. There is not a trace of evidence
only her naked body.
Is this the work of a serial killer?? How many
more women were murdered, left at sea and
never found??
FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett works as
a profiler. She is partnered with Detective
Michowsky to unravel the mystery of the
murdered woman.
A Highly Recommended Read!!
Read in one night.
This is book # 7 in the Tess Winnett series.
It can be read as a stand alone.
I volunteered to read Mile High Death.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity.

I love the Tess Winnet series and this book was no exception. The story’s pacing kept me on the edge of my seat. I just couldn’t put this book down.

Tess Winnet is a brilliant psychological profiler with the FBI. She and her partner are on the trail of a serial killer after a body is found in the gulf within a very brief window of time after the woman’s death. Tess’ gut tells her there are other victims out there and she’s determined to stop the killer before he strikes again.

This is the next book in the series about an FBI agent who investigates the most gruesome and scary cases by profiling serial killers. Even though the book can be read as a stand-alone, it's better to follow the order to better understand and know the main characters. I really like these particular series for the jolts of adrenaline they give me. This particular book is thrilling and is definitely another page turner. I would not hesitate to read more about Tess Winnett.

This case is up in the air!

A young woman’s body washes up on the beach and the coroner’s report leads agent Tess Winnett to suspect her death is only the tip of a very large iceberg. What better place to dump bodies than in the Gulf where sea life will make quick work of any evidence.

This is an intriguing crime thriller with some good plot twists. Any armchair detective is going to love this story.

Another FBI Tess Winnett thriller

This is a quick read in an evening book in the Tess Winnett series. She is an FBI profiler. A young woman is found in the Gulf with multiple injuries consistent with a fall from a great height. It is only by luck that she is found before her body totally disappears. Tess and her sometimes-partner from the police department work together to bring the killer to justice, a killer who has done this many times before.

A Quick Fast Read

Tests Gwinnett is investigating a body that was fished out of the ocean by a passing ship. What made the body even stranger was that practically every bone was broken.

The Pathologist speculated that the body has fallen from a considerable height. But since its impossible to open the door to even a small when its airborne, she'll have to come up with an alternate theory.

This was a really good, fast moving story. Tess is looking for a serial killer who disposes the bodies in an eerie way. Some answers are upfront, some unfold as you read. This is an interesting series, well worth the read. I like that Tess figures out why people do what they do.
I thank the author for the privilege of reading a well written story.
