The Psychology of Happiness

Rate this book
Despite being discussed, questioned, philosophized about, and sought after since the days of Aristotle, the pathways to happiness are not always clear...but there is one. In order to find it, you need a solid foundation for understanding what really makes us - as humans - happy. And that’s exactly what you will gain by learning what science has to say about the big questions of happiness and thriving.

Throughout 10 lectures, Professor Jaime Kurtz will outline the physical and emotional benefits that a boost in happiness can bring you. Professor Kurtz will invite you to access those benefits with a range of science-based strategies that you can choose from - strategies that will help you create more happiness in your everyday life. As you examine the effect of both the tools and challenges to being happy, including mindfulness, exercise, nature, social media, money, and more, you’ll gain practical knowledge - useful things that you can start practicing in your life, immediately. You’ll also take away a deep understanding and appreciation of what is gained when we take an elusive concept such as happiness and examine it through the lens of science.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to boosting your happiness - it depends heavily on genetics among other factors, but by learning some new behaviors and actions that you can intentionally choose for yourself, you’ll find you are able to make real, lasting changes in both your daily life and in your overall levels of happiness.

This popped up as a suggestion to read by Audible and so I read it.

I've read books on the same and similar topics and was not expecting to hear a lot of new things.

Yes there was a lot of information that I was already aware of , however there were one or two little stories that I enjoyed that helped bring the topic to life and more importantly helps to reinforce the drivers of happiness.

I belive the more I read about this topic the more stories I will become aware of and that repetition will help drive greater clarity and understanding as each brings another slight change in perception to give me a more solid picture and understanding.

Enjoyable read.

I personally did not find out anything new but a good reminder of some 'simple' techniques for everyday practice.

I would only recommend this book to people who are uninterested in the idea of happiness. In no part of this book is there any enquiry on the philosophical foundations of happiness. Joy is confused for pleasure. Eudaimonia is misunderstood. Everything is jumbled up. An over reliance of vague surveys that cannot produce any usefor information about persons. Subjective well-being, as it is presented, is utterly meaningless. The book is wrongheaded from the start and establishes nothing. It is, in fact, more deluded into thinking that what it is doing is science. "What science has found out" is an empty statement if the scientists don't know what they are measuring.

If a physicist does not know what an electron is, and has no conception that he might be measuring things much different than electrons, and in fact, if he accepts anything insofar as it gives him numbers on his device, we'd think that physicist is in a worse state than the clueless layman. This book is just such a thing. Jumbled nonsense that labels whatever is at any moment measured as happiness, and offers intercomparisons between two widely distincts effects in the mind under the same terms.

This book is absolutely worthless. I give it one star more because it is a useful reference for the idiocy that exists under the broken world of psychology.

The narrator is very enthusiastic. I hesitate to say "cheery" because that seems like an insult. In fact, she seems happy. That is, she is glad to be presenting this audio course. In the past I have heard people who claimed to be happy, but certainly didn't sound like it. The professor here definitely sounds happy.

The strategies for being happy are split into two types: the idea that doing pleasurable things makes one happy, and the other idea that estimable acts such as acts of charity, caring and hard work bring about happiness. The professor explores both ideas, along with studies that explain why, in some cases, happiness doesn't last.

She also talks about time management and meditation briefly.

I'm not sure if I would listen to this audio course again. I appreciated the lectures, but I am already happy. I am doing many of the things that the professor recommends. I might profit from another listen to the course, but not by much.

Some of the research that was referenced I don't agree with but overall I think this book is very well written and researched. It has many great suggestions and never gets preachy or Fake-science. I would recommend this book to my clients.

The book is true to it's name, there so much psychology researches there, which makes sense because then the content becomes relative but if you are short on time, you can skip the researches mentioned because the actual content about methods is pretty good.

Listened to the audio version. It was ok, good advice, but I didn't feel it had anything particularly new to offer from other books on the subject
