Inenarrabile ORRORE.
The heartbreaking story of the older Royal brother Gideon and his girlfriend from school, Savannah.
The story takes place in two different time periods:
-When they first met at Astor. Gideon’s mother was still alive and miserable and she was making the lives of her sons miserable, too. Gideon’s father was never present. Dinah was trying to get her claws into Gideon. And Savannah was far too innocent. -3 years later. When Savannah is on college visit at State. Gideon obviously cannot forget about her and he tries to tell her how much in love he is.
“Are you saying that you and Savannah are a one true pairing?” I hold up my hand and cross my middle finger over my index finger. “We’re destined to be together but circumstances have kept us apart. Clearly the fact that she’s visiting my college out of all the ones she could attend means it’s destiny. Do you want to be the one to stand in the way of true love?”
I think mostly out of this story I felt sorry for the Royal boys again. It is actually I think the first time that we see the despicable behavior of their mother and the questionable behavior of their father.
I would love to have a more extended version of Gideon and Savannah’s story. This ended really fast.
It was great to see what happened between Gideon and Savannah for real. Gideon has always intrigued me and I was happy to get his side of things. I always love reading about my Royal boys! A quick read and nice addition to the series.
Tarnished Crown is a BONUS novella that takes place between Twisted Palace (The Royals #3) and Fallen Heir (The Royals 4). If you have not read books 1-3, this will spoil those books and probably won't make much sense. I do not recommend reading this as a standalone!
*SIGH* If Reed is the broody Royal, and Easton is the fun Royal, then Gideon is 100% the swoony Royal. In the first three books he definitely seems more Reed-like with the moods and the broods, but in Tarnished Crown we get the TRUE Gideon, and I absolutely LOVED IT!
I admit I wasn't his biggest fan before, but I really loved Savannah and she is mostly why I wanted to read this story so badly. In the first three books she was so fun, and I just loved her attitude. Tarnished Crown is just a short novella, so I don't want to ruin anything so all I will say is that... we get so many explanations of things from this couples past. Questions many of us had from books 1-3 about them, are resolved in this story, and wow... just wow do we get so many sweet moments between these two. We get to see these two and how they've grown, and that is honestly awesome, because by the end of Twisted Palace I needed to see that.
And true to Erin Watt form we get a few awesome side characters who get their own little story that you somehow become invested in even though you've just met them!
Such a fun little read, that will give you a Royal fix and hold you over until the next book whether it's Fallen Heir or Cracked Kingdom. If you're a Royal fangirl I highly recommend.
EDIT 30/08/2017: I okay, something was bugging me since reading this, so I went back to TP to check.
It was so much fun receiving each Friday a chapter. A lot of issues were opened here and sort of unanswered. Otherwise, it was fine. Just the last chapter. It killed me. So damn cheesy. :D
Also, I don't quite get the relationship between the two of them. Gideon at one point says that Ella came and just twisted his brother or whatever. Well, Gideon is basically Savannah's lapdog, it's laughable.
I wasn't much interested in Gideon's and Savannah's story. Mostly because the author just suddenly threw their story in the previous books and didn't give any closure. I thought this book will have everything, how they started dating and how they got into the mess.
Unfortunately, their relationship was focused here. But everything was too vauge. Dinah is a sexual predator and deserves harsh punishment for what she did. I am disappointed.
Wow...I had no idea that I've been reading this chapter a week novella since the end of March until the authors put out the last chapter. Five months is a long time to stretch out a book!
As I was trying to recall things, I felt a real sense of being discombobulated. It made me wish I had considered that they would actually put out the novella at some point and just wait. But it's a done deal for me, however, if you haven't started it, you won't have to worry about that!
I do have to admit that I was a bit disappointed in Gideon and Savannah's relationship. I just didn't feel the depth of their love. There's no real drama besides what we already know about (if you've read The Royals series) and the "drama" they did have, was handled a bit immaturely IMO. I guess I just expected more from an older Gideon.
One thing I did like was how much he did to make up for his past mistake. And I really liked Savannah coming into her own.
However, I was surprised at the extent of what Gideon went to at the end. That was definitely above and beyond!
Okay. Hmm...so I'm not really feeling this book. Maybe because I've read Fallen Heir before this and that one disappointed me so much that I guess I just lost interest in this series. I couldn't care less about the characters and I just really read this because I've had a crush on Gideon from the first three books. I was kinda excited to finally know his story here but I feel like the Gideon Royal in here is so different from the one I've read in the first books. I don't know.
This story didn't make me swoon at all. The characters seem bland for my taste. It was an okay read but not that good for me. Maybe that's why this is free.
It’s been months since I read the last book, or what I thought was going to be the last book in the Royals’ world and if it’s not for a friend at work, I wouldn’t have known we got more books. I swear, I’m not the worst at keeping up with the good stuff.
Nevertheless, I needed to dive back in and boy, did I miss the world.
I enjoyed the fuck out of this story. It was short but full of emotion -I wish it was longer! Savannah and Gideon’s relationship was something I always wanted to read about and now I got the chance and while I really liked most of it, I must admit the last part of the story was rushed and felt incomplete.
I was happy Sav and Gideon worked things out but given all the feelings that were displayed in the previous books and in the beginning of this story, the final act demanded something longer and deeper. Years have passed and both Savannah and Gideon have felt the weight of everything and thus the end needed to be epic, which it wasn’t.
In the end, a full-length book was what Savannah and Gideon needed.
I particularly liked this sense of freedom that comes with being in college in the way that you can start fresh and be who you really want to be or explore who you are in a healthy way. I liked that a lot and yeah, that was the perfect scenario for this couple to reunite and work all of this together.
Ever since reading the Royal trilogy I needed to know Gideon and Savannah’s story.
And as expected their story was filled with drama, betrayal, groveling, and teenage angst.
If you like teenage drama, high school drama and break-up stories, this is the right novella for you. I should also mention that the original format was a newsletter serial, so there will be an obvious disconnect between chapters.
Tarnished Crown doesn’t have the flow of a full novel. And it definitely feels like a novella, a little rushed at the end, and it’s missing a deeper character development. It also could have benefited from one or two more chapters about Savannah and Gideon after all the drama. Because the ending felt rushed.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this novella had a lot of teenage drama. The novella switched between past and present trying to give answers to questions readers had since Gideon and Savannah’s former relationship was mentioned in the original trilogy. And it also tried to give Gideon enough time to grovel for what he did in the past.
High school drama can be pretty annoying, especially if the plot follows every cliche imaginable. BUT, for readers who love these kind of stories, who devour all things YA drama and angst, this novella will be a blast. And the price is unbeatable.
Tarnished Crown is the best example of a guilty pleasure read – lots of YA/NA drama and angst.

Blurb: Two years ago, one mistake cost Gideon Royal the girl of his dreams. Since then he’s become jaded and stoic, caught in a spiral that has him dealing with blackmail, heartache and loss. When he left for college, he hoped to start over. But fate has other ideas, placing Savannah Montgomery in his path again.
Savannah believes there’s no coming back from Gideon’s betrayal.
He thinks she’s wrong.
Forgiveness. Hope. Redemption. Gideon has vowed to win back the only girl who owns his heart. And when a Royal makes a promise, he’ll go to the ends of the earth to keep it.
Dare I say that I liked the first 50% with the hate/love aspect going on with the angst and bit of drama, but it lost some umph after that and was just meh.
Unfortunately, this book just wasn’t as good as the first three books in the series! It wasn’t bad but it just wasn’t as interesting and entertaining as the other ones. I liked reading more about Gideon and Savannah’s relationship but at the same time I also felt like I just once again got to hear everything that we’d already learned about them in the other books plus a few more details and how they’re doing today.
So I was just expecting a lot more from this but it was still a decent book which is why I’m giving it three out of five stars.
Tarnished Crown is the companion book to the third novel in the, The Royals series.
In the previous book, we’re introduced to Gideon, one of the Royal brothers and Savannah, his ex-girlfriend.
They seemed to have a super mysterious relationship. Although at times I was interested in learning more about them, I did not enjoy this book.
I always found Gideon to be a strange character and didn’t care for him. This book hardly explained Gideon and Savannah’s relationship and only addressed a few past and current scenes.
The only part of the book that I actually appreciated is the length. It can be read in a few hours/in one sitting.
I’d only really tell you to read this book if you really really really care for Gideon and Savannah, and their relationship. If not, definitely pass on this because I can assure you that you won’t miss out on anything important! x
