After a family tragedy nearly destroyed Mallory Ingram, she's fighting to get her life on track. When her sister and brother-in-law open their home to her, Mallory is certain that moving across the country will allow her to focus on a hopeful future. That future looks even more promising when her enrollment at a local university connects her with the charming Darien Thomas.
However, when illegal drugs turn up at her sister's house, the first person accused is Mallory, and suddenly, she doesn't know who to trust. Mounting evidence of Mallory's guilt is straining the tenuous bond she has just begun to develop with her sister after years of living separately. Desperate to prove her innocence and keep the harmful patterns of the past from hijacking her future, Mallory reaches for Darien's help to discover the truth.
But the truth may be more dangerous than any of them imagine.
Stephanie Black has loved books since she was old enough to grab the pages, and has enjoyed creating make-believe adventures since she and her sisters were inventing long Barbie games filled with intrigue and danger or running around pretending to be detectives. She is a four-time Whitney Award winner for Best Mystery/Suspense novel.
Stephanie lives in California, in the Bay Area. She plays the violin in a community symphony (but never practices enough), enjoys homemade chocolate-chip cookies, and takes pictures of birds. Her favorite activity is spending time with her family, currently consisting of her husband, five kids, three kids-in-law, a cat, and three grandpets.
This was a good story but I had no idea it was a novella- the whole book was 80 pages and took me about 40 minutes to read. It centers on Mallory who is trying to get her life back together after a family tragedy 5 years ago. When she gets accused of having a drug problem, her new friend Darien helps her figure out what is really going on.
There are pros and cons to this being such a short book. On the good side, it was very fast paced and had pretty much non-stop action. On the other side, there really wasn’t much suspense- while there was action, there weren’t twists and the unveiling of the villain is pretty straightforward.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. I am not a reader of short stories and would not had picked it up had I known, but I’m glad I did, as it was a fun way to spend the better part of an hour. Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love a good little suspense and this bit-sized story was an afternoon treat. I'm always amazed when an author can develop an intricate and satisfying story in under 100 pages, yet that's just what this author did. The plot was solid, creepy, and complete.
Mallory has a complicated and traumatic past, which allows for the reader to cast suspicion on this protagonist. While likable, she has flaws and I liked how her relationship with Darien progressed on the heels of a good mystery. I loved the way this story was formulated and enjoyed how it all played out.
Content: vague mentions of drug use, murder, mild violence, and peril; mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
So, I don’t think I can accurately rate this novella. Turns out I’ve read it before (or at least a version of it—it was previously published in an anthology). I read it about 8 years ago, so I didn’t remember all the details, but I remembered enough that I kind of knew what was going to happen.
Having said that, this is a good story. It’s short (perfect for those times when you want a quick read), the characters are likeable and relatable, and the tension is great throughout. If you’re in the mood for a novella that is suspenseful, clean, and includes a budding romance, this is a great choice. Novellas don’t allow for as many twists as Ms. Black normally puts into her full-length novels, but it was still a great read.
In the novella, Mallory is working her way through college after recovering from a family tragedy and the depression that followed. She’s crushing on the grad student who keeps coming in early to work so he can be there while she’s doing her janitorial job, and she’s living with her sister and brother-in-law. But then her sister finds drugs in the house, and Mallory’s family is sure they’re Mallory’s. So begins a search to find out who’s behind the drugs—and why—and if Darien (the adorably nerdy grad student) will be scared away or turn into a stalwart defender.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and Netgalley for a review copy.
I was surprised how quickly I flew through this one. What a great short little Romantic Suspense. I had just started and the next thing I knew it was done. I am glad for the logic showed by Darien, he saved Mallory from her sister and her husband from suspicions that proved false. This is perfect for a lunchtime read or a quick read after the kids go to bed.
Stephanie Black is a wizard with suspense and knows just how to keep a reader interested. I am looking forward to this release.
I received an early copy via NetGalley and this is my honest review.
I’m always happy to read anything written by Stephanie Black. She writes such amazing suspense novels. I was thrilled to find this novella. And the time I spent reading it made me happy. Don’t expect a long story with this one, it’s only around 70 pages. But it’s so good.
I liked Mallory. She was a really hard worker. She’d been through some things and moved from her home town. In the story, she’s living with her sister and going to college. But her worst nightmare comes true when she’s accused of doing drugs and in danger of being thrown from their home.
I liked that Darien was able to believe her and wanted to help her prove her innocence. And he comes through when he’s needed the most.
This novella kept me guessing. I loved reading it!
I was sent a copy of Eye for an Eye as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Wow, this story packs a punch into it's short pages! It's novella length and I read it in less than an hour. I'm not sure if that was me speed reading because I was so anxious about the story or if it was really that short. Haha.
This author did a great job of giving me what felt like a full sized story in a novella size. Yeah, the romance wasn't there but the beginnings of it was there. It was perfect for what was happening. The story was fast paced and exciting from beginning to end. The perfect little bite sized snack. So fun!
Content: mild peril, kissing, mild violence

I love a quick, exciting read and Eye for an Eye fit the bill. Stephanie Black has a true talent at weaving an excellent and thrilling mystery. This novella reads quickly because the suspense level is high right from the start and I knew I had to keep reading to find out what happens! And it delivers a pinch of romance as a reward. You instantly feel for Mallory and even though her past may not be perfect, she finds a friend in Darien. Together they try to solve who is quickly trying to ruin her life. Of course, it was a well written quick story from the suspense queen Stephanie Black.
This is a very short and completely satisfying novella.
Mallory works a 4 am shift cleaning an office and is also enrolled at the local university. She lives with her sister and brother-in-law, while she tries to get her life back on track after a family tragedy.
But after a phone call from her uncle with some bad news, strange, upsetting things start happening that she can't explain.
Darien is a recent friend but he's committed to helping her and they draw closer as they try to unravel the mystery.
Like I said, it's short but you almost don't realize since it doesn't feel rushed. It also has a super cute romance.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Even in a novella, Stephanie Black can hold my attention and keep me on the edge of my seat. Even though this is a short read (an hour to an hour and a half depending on how fast you read), I was completely satisfied with Mallory's story, and the suspense had me turning pages late into the night to see how it would end.
Mallory's finally getting her life together--she's in college, has a job, and she's trying to repair her relationship with her sister, but in just one day, all of this may come to a crashing halt. It starts with an early morning phone call and only gets worse when her sister and brother-in-law accuse her of using drugs. Mallory can't explain where they came from and everything she says and does makes her look guiltier in sister and brother-in-law's eyes. Who can she turn to for help in proving her innocence?
This didn't feel like a novella to me. The characters were well developed and we even get some of Mallory's backstory in the beginning so the reader doesn't feel as if they've been plopped down in the middle of a story without enough information to understand it. I really liked that we get Darien's point of view in addition to Mallory's. I liked how their relationship developed, and that he was willing to help her even though they hardly knew each other before all of these weird things started happening. I liked Mallory, she'd been through a lot after her mom's death and was working hard to move her life in the right direction.

I had never read Stephanie Black's books before this novella, but heard great things about them, so I was excited to receive an ARC of this one! :)
The novella follows Mallory through a couple days after drugs get planted in her room. Through accusations thrown at her, she has to find out who would try to frame her and why.
I loved how short and fast paced it was! It had all the suspense of a full sized novel packed into 70 pages. Talk about being on the edge of your seat! Definitely one to read in a sitting!
The biggest thing I struggled with was actually how short it was. (Love-hate relationship here I guess 😂) I wish I had gotten some more time to invest in the plot and character development throughout the story.
The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because of how quick to judgement some of the other characters were. I was kind of hoping for an explanation as to why some of the side characters weren't as supportive of Mallory during this crisis. But that's not targeted at Black's writing style but more at how short it was and, as mentioned before, how novellas don't really provide time to dig into the characters and their development.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable read! I mean, if reading it in one sitting didn't already say that 😉
I don’t remember the last book I read that was this predictable. There may not be another out there that is more so. In any case, the book is short so it is not too frustrating to read. Darien’s character was definitely the brain of the group. I needed a break from the series I have been reading and this filled that purpose so it wasn’t all bad. It does get tense and exciting at the end so if you need a quick predictable read this would be a good choice.
This little 67-page novella blew me away! The tension built up so quickly I felt like I was reading a full-length novel. I tried to read it in one sitting but I had to go to bed. The next day I hurried and got ready for work, got there, and then preceded to read the last two chapters of the book before the bell rang. 😁😁
I felt for poor Mallory who seemed she couldn't get a break, even from her own sister. Thank goodness she found a friend in the wonderful and kind Darien. He provided the level head and strength she needed. When Mallory was accused of hiding drugs in her sister's house it was hard to know who to believe. Author Stephanie Black always knows how to make every character seem so suspicious. There was enough back story given to help you start to process details. Once again, it's such an amazing thing to do in only 67 pages.
I really loved this novella and recommend it to those wanting a quick read full of thrills and chills, and of course the beginnings of a sweet romance.
I usually prefer a full-length novel because I love to see the characters grow and develop during the course of the book. I was surprised by the development of the characters and the plot.
Mallory is a student who has had her fair share of tragedy due to illegal drug use. Her past and present collide when drugs are found in her sister's home and she is blamed for them. With the help of a new friend, the clues are waiting to be discovered and the real villain revealed.
This book is pretty intense considering its size. I was engaged right from the start and enjoyed the story. It was a wonderful short escape into the world of suspense and fiction.

Need a great romantic suspense read? And you are looking for something quick yet very satisfying? This one friends is a great one that you can quickly devour and feel very satisfied. These characters, backstory, everything was well written for the length of it. I was fully invested in Mallory and her story. She's had quite a bit of heartbreak and struggle in her life. When she's finally back on track and doing well, not just surviving, she gets a phone call with news that takes her back to the moment that her life crashed around her. And from there strange things start happening. With the help of the handsome Darien, she might be able to make sense of everything and clear her name.
Ohhh, this one had it all. Suspense, action, a little bit of a creepy moment (ok I was reading it late at night, and she was outside all alone in the middle of the night), family, sweet romance and a very exciting conclusion!
If you enjoy suspense but can't handle it at night, don't read it late like I did. Hahaha! But in all seriousness, read it. It was great! And nothing too intense and scary. I don't do scary. No thanks!
Stephanie Black is a go to suspenseful read author for me. I've really enjoyed all of her books and was excited to jump on the chance to read this novella by her.
Content: Clean. There is talk about alcohol and drugs but not in graphic detail. There is suspense and an attack but it is clean and well written. Some sweet romance but nothing further than kisses.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I am still fairly new to the suspense genre, and though I’m an utter wimp about scary books, I find that I enjoy a good suspense. This book was really quite good! For a book only about 60 pages in length, I found I was still able to become fully engrossed in the story and was sufficiently creeped out. Ha! I definitely couldn’t read this one at night.
I loved how our heroine found a champion and how their relationship progressed. I liked how well they worked together and everything Darien did to help Mallory. While I may have been able to figure out what was going to happen, I still really liked how everything played out.
If you’re looking for a quick read that will get your blood pumping a bit and whet your appetite for more suspense, I highly recommend picking this one up!
Quote I loved: Darien responded to crying by offering chocolate? He was a genius.
Do you like crime shows? I'm a HUGE fan. Blue Bloods, Castle, Criminal Minds, Chicago PD, Bones, Law & Order, Timeless, 20/20, True Crime. I love it all. This book was like that! It's a short novella, 68-70-ish pages, and it felt like I was watching an episode of one of my shows. . Mallory's life gets a little off track when her sister and brother in law find illegal drugs in their home. Assuming they are hers because of part choices, Mallory tries to discover the truth, along with her crush, Darien. . It's a dual perspective read which I love. It's short, has little tastes of humor and gives plenty of background, successfully answering all my questions without making the storyline drag. 👏 Bravo, Stephanie Black, bravo.
This was a great novella full of suspense that we have come to love from Stephanie Black. I loved how she drew you in from the first page and how you were on the edge of your seat through the 60 pages. I loved how she described the characters and made us be invested in their lives. I also loved how she was able to put just the right amount of suspense into this short story. She made me wish to know more about what happens to the characters after this story.. Overall, I really enjoyed it.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I was given an advanced copy of this novella and I was glad. Though it was short like all novellas are, it still contained some great mystery and suspense with a hint of romance. If you are in need of a quick read, then this is a novella for you.
If you have ever read Stephanie Black before you know exactly what you are getting from her writing. Stephanie is extremely consistent in her writing and makes it easy to have her be an auto buy author. I loved the suspense in this novella! The writing is smooth and concise, but still allows a lot of descriptive text throughout. I could really feel the turmoil Mallory was going through trying to figure out what was happening and loved Darien’s calming personality and able to look at both sides objectively. It was a fun twist on a supporting character to be so level headed. This was a fun day read and if you like suspense at all you should definitely get this book!
Thanks to the publisher for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Eye for an Eye was the first book I’ve read by Stephanie Black and it definitely made me want to read more by her! This short little novella was enough suspense to keep me intrigued and into the story without terrifying me at night! Trust me, I’m a scaredy-cat. Like any novella I wish it was longer to get to know the characters better, but @stephanieblackauthor did a great job of character building to at least understand them enough to know their personalities and worry about them. I don’t know how not to spoil the book so can’t say too much about the plot but I really enjoyed it and now need to go read all her other books!

Thank you @covenant_com and @stephanieblackauthor for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
Mallory’s past has caught up with her as she tries to deflect the suspicion that has fallen upon her after drugs were mysteriously found in her room. Convinced that someone from her past is trying to frame her, she tries to uncover their identity with the help of her charismatic coworker Darien.
Strengths: --> Length. I’m glad this was a novella, because I don’t think this story could have been drawn out any more than it was. The mystery was not complex enough to expand to a full-length novel, but the story was still engaging at this length. --> Language. The author used simple language, the language that a teenager or young adult would use in daily life–albeit, no profanity, which was refreshing. --> Family relations. While I was frustrated with her sister and brother-in-law for their distrust of the protagonist at the beginning, I began to understand where they were coming from as the story progressed and we got to see Mallory’s story unfold. It was nice to see how they were able to develop enough trust to help Mallory solve the mystery and find justice.
Weaknesses: --> The reveals. I wish Black would have offered more background throughout the story instead of having the character reveal it when the story needed it. The reader could have tried to connect the clues as the story progressed instead of having information spill out when the author wanted it.
I loved this latest mystery novella from Stephanie Black! This story packs so much in 80 pages. There is a tight plot which revolves around a possible unreliable narrator. Mallory has a tragic past, but is finally getting her life together. She’s going to college, and has a job where she meets the charming Darien Thomas. When her sister and her brother-in-law whom she’s living with accuse her of stashing illegal drugs in their house, it’s unclear whether Mallory is lying to herself, if her sister or brother-in-law are trying to gaslight her, or if it’s something else. Darien is attracted to Mallory and wants to get to know her better. When she confides in him, he is determined to learn the truth, even if that means not taking Mallory at her word.
There’s suspense, a sweet romance, and an interesting mystery that all lead to an action packed climax. I enjoy mysteries where you aren’t sure whom you can trust. There was no swearing which I really appreciated. Instead, the author used intelligent characters and dialogue to carry the story. This book was hard to put down and can easily be read in one sitting. Definitely recommend. I received a complimentary copy of this novella from NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to give a positive review.
I didn’t realize when I started reading this book it was only 90 pages, so I was pleasantly surprised at how this author packed so much into a novel this size. Mallory's world is suddenly turned upside down when her sister and husband accuse her of something she didn't do, all the clues lead to Mallory. She new in town and feels trapped with no where to turn for help.
I was fully invested in this story that has Mallory questioning everything she believed in. Then a familiar face, an unexpected friend steps in to listen, giving her hope. When Mallory shares her situation with this friend even she isn’t convinced she's innocent. It all sounds ridiculous. It was a suspenseful, mysterious adventure that left me wanting more. This author is one to watch!

A fantastic tale of suspense from Stephanie Black Stephanie Black is a master of suspense. This book will pull you in with the first few pages. The characters are real, compelling and believable. Mallory is working her way through college as a campus custodian after being orphaned and raised by an uncle. Currently living with her sister, who is eleven years older, and her brother-in-law she tries to make for time she lost after the murder of her mother by a drug addict that Mallory had known. When illicit drugs are found in the house and Mallory is accused of using drugs, she has no one to turn to except Darien, a grad student from the office she cleans. She knows she isn’t using. She can’t believe her sister or brother-in-law are trying to frame her. Who planted the drugs? Are they just out to ruin her college career or is something more sinister going on? Can Mallory and Darien solve this problem before it’s too late? This is a fantastic
Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG13; Violence: PG Mallory finally feels like she’s getting her life back on track at age 22: she has a job to pay for her freshman year at college while benefiting from cheap rent by living with her sister and brother-in-law. And then they accuse Mallory of using illegal drugs in their home. With everyone pointing fingers, Mallory worries that no one will believe her and that her life will end just as it was beginning. Black hooks her readers early through her inexplicable way with words and then never lets up on the subtle wrongness that hints of what is lurking in the background. Mallory and the characters around her felt like real people, which made the suspicious activity even more nerve-wracking. Don’t be fooled by its length: this novella still includes all the excitement of a full-length thriller. The mature content rating is for a strong theme of drug use and abuse. Eye for an Eye is a short suspenseful novella. It’s the very first book I’ve read by @stephanieblackauthor but I can tell you now, it won’t be my last!
This is a suspenseful who-dunnit story with a small taste of a budding romance. The story seems like it could be predictable in a couple different directions, but as the story goes along, your thoughts on who did it is going to change multiple times!! At least mine did 😉 I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know the end! I read it on breaks at work over just a couple days. (Problems of being a book-a-holic who also has to work full time 👎🏻)
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes short reads, and suspense. ⚠️This book does involve a past murder, prison violence, mentions of past drug use and people breaking into a house.
Thank you to @covenant_com for an ARC of this story. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way biased.
