Beach House Romance by Cora Seton is the beginning of a new series for Seton and a departure from Chance Creek, which all her fans will mourn. Emma Miller and her sister, Ashley, had had a challenging life, but the letter changed all that. A decade after she had died, she received a letter from her grandmother's friend, stating bluntly, that she and Ashley had inherited their grandmother's bed and breakfast, Brightview, and gardens, Cliff Garden. She was beyond ecstatic. This would erase all the bad things. She could go back to the only place she's ever been really happy. She and Ashley, together. Until she discovered that Ashley wanted to sell, obtain the security she's always craved. No. She'd go to Seahaven and see. Maybe she could convince Ashley. Nana Angel's friend, Colette, had been running Brightview since their grandmother had passed and it was slightly shabby when Emma arrived, but clean and manageable. The phone rang; Noah Hudson was on the other end, wanting to rent a room for six months. Flustered, she said, "Sure." Colette had a binder full of the information she would need. She could do this.
Seton has a way of placing the reader right into the story, seeing through the eyes of her protagonist. In this case, it was the beach, and the garden, and the bedroom that was exactly as it had been when she had last been in it at eight years old. There were problems to solve, but she would show Ashley; she would do it. Things happened fast. She and Ashley were clearly not on the same page and the read can feel the rage, and the stress, reaching back years. Their mother had died, and their father had never loved them. They both carried, albeit in different ways. They both carried the traditions learned in that far-away summer. Their grandmother had loved them, and taught them. This is a lovely novel, full of emotion and angst; full of love and longing for things that may never be. Yes, it's a romance, but it is so much more. It is siblings coming to grips with their pasts, proving that things can work out eventually. Likable, but flawed characters, make this novel a terrific read. One the reader will read again. Thank you, Cora Seton!
