I was granted complimentary eARC access to Self-Publish & Succeed by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

I'm going to admit something before we dive in. I saw the main title and, as an aspiring author who is open to the idea of self-publishing, jumped at the chance to read a potentially invaluable resource. I didn't read the subtitle and realize that this is specifically for non-fiction writers and was surprised when the first point of advice talks about how non-fiction is about the author, not the reader. After I got over that surprise, though, I continued reading and discovered that this is still a great resource, even if you're not trying to publish non-fiction. The advice that is given about making non-fiction interesting also applies to fiction, and everything else about succeeding in self-publishing is very much the same. (Possible exception or surprisingly helpful advice, depending on the fiction writer: the section on hiring and working with a ghostwriter.) Who you market to may be different, when and what type of editing services you avail of may be different, etc. but the bones of the process are the same, and as such this book will shed light on the process for all hopeful authors.

There's advice in here I haven't yet come across in all the other reading and listening I've done on this topic, and for that reason alone I would encourage aspiring authors or experienced authors new to self-publishing and self-marketing to pick up this book and read it cover to cover as early in your journey as possible. Perhaps it's because I haven't been listening to the non-fiction publishing educators before now, but I've never considered the "look inside" preview before. It seems to be that everyone else doling out publishing advice is focused on cover and synopsis and forgets about everything else that greets the potential customer when they come across a book's listing. I very much appreciate the fact that this book includes a section on beta readers, as well. This is a concept I didn't fully understand until I volunteered as a beta reader for a friend I met on a ARC review team. It's not something I normally see mentioned in resources like this.

Having reading this book, I will definitely be looking at their online resources and perhaps seeking out other publications and services this company has to offer when it's my turn to publish. This is a great tool that I feel can help authors of all genres and categories, though it has clearly been carefully curated for non-fiction authors.

This book was received as an ARC from Book Launchers - Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have been waiting for this EXACT book for a long time. As a librarian and an inspiring author, I have been wanting to learn how to self-publish for a long time. I have a book in progress but never got that right stuff to pursue self publishing until now. I love the language and point of view Julie Broad brought to this book and I immediately connected with her. Thanks to this book, I finally gained the confidence I need to continue with my book and now self-publish it and see the success it will bring. I also felt a rush of relief of how she says a requirement for success is to experience failure and hardship and that just brought a smile on my face because I know what it is like to struggle and fail and now I have a whole new direction to add to my book.

We will consider adding this title to our Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Do not “Traditionally Publish,” unless you are crazy-famous, don’t care about maximizing your royalties, or mind giving up your writer-rights! Julie Broad’s book made the answer of Self-Publishing not so daunting. She structured a fun and easy-to-understand guide to each step, that every aspiring author should take and the vivid reasons why, to accomplish this lofty goal.

After reading Self-Publish & Succeed, I no longer questioned whether self-publishing was the right path for most non-fiction writers. This revelation inspired me to continue my sit-down marathon with confidence, because of Julie’s step-by-step map that I frankly needed. Filled with tips to avoid writing a boring book, consistent with her philosophy of “No Boring Books,” and many other resources that truly make self-publishing a team endeavor, each page offered “insider” gems. I also appreciated her marketing tips to sell more books “for the reader,” that benefit the reader. Gratefully, she followed her own advice.—Highly recommended!

Such a great example of writing a #noboringbook. Great balance on technical practical content and engaging fun content. The writing draws you in and keeps you turning pages. This book helps to demystify the self publishing journey and helps you (as the author puts it) “focus more on communicating well than sounding smart”. It’s an easy to use guide even if you want to get professional support in writing your book.

Authorship is possible by following the steps in this book and prevents you from writing a shelf help book. If you’ve always wanted to write a non-fiction book but not sure where to start, or if it will sell and do well, then this is for you. Especially if you have a special message and not sure if it is enough content to turn to a book. I appreciate the ease of approach to the seemingly daunting publishing world.

“Do or do not. There is no try.”

Anyone who quotes Yoda is ok in my book.

Julie Broad put together an enjoyable book packed with valuable information. She gives the information without making it dry. I found myself looking forward to the next story.

My favorite part was at the beginning of the book: Be, Do, Have. You’re going to love that. Oh, and there’s the whole Yoda thing 😊

If you’re expecting to get lectured about self-publishing, you’re going to be surprised. You’re going to have fun reading this book. You’re also going to learn a lot of new, wonderful things.

Julie has an expansive knowledge of self-publishing and leaves nothing out. You’re going to love this book!

P.S. I wish I knew her grandmother.

Have you ever browsed through a book in reverse, flicking from the last page to the very first? Yes, we all have - So, this book won’t disappoint. It prepares you for the extraordinary story and lessons that unfold, told in the way only Julie Broad knows how, based upon real life and real experiences. Her authoritative but sweetly short ending Chapter, “Lives Are About To Change” is both a preparation, and a summary, of the book for all aspiring authors, and duly maintains her status that the “No Boring Books” way to write a non-fiction book that sells, really is the definitive guide. This is a modern Classic in the making, and one that will be referred to for many years to come.

So much in-depth, actionable advice in one book!

Self Publish and Succeed is priceless - finally all of Julie's advice in one place! Julie Broad is a generous person who shares her expertise in self-publishing and book writing, design, promotion, and all the legal technicalities of publishing in today's crazy book marketplace. From the idea stage to the promotion, this book covers all of the ins and outs of writing a book that is reader-focused, interesting, well-designed and marketable. She has taken all of the information from her business Book Launchers, and from her funny and informative YouTube channel, and synthesized it all into one clear, easy-to-navigate roadmap of a book. I love that she is Canadian, so is able to address the international aspect of writing and distributing a self-published book as well.

As a client of Book Launchers and a steady consumer of Julie's videos, I can definitely attest to the value of every chapter of this book. It will prove invaluable to anyone who has a great non-fiction idea and wants to get it out into the world. I highly recommending this book to anyone who is interested in creating their own "No Boring" book. Her guidance and advice has allowed me to become a published author of a book that I can be proud of, and she can do that for you too!

Fishing for Nuggets

As a self-published nonfiction writer and copyeditor for other nonfiction writers, I so wanted to like this book, especially since I had recently read one that I felt was light on content. I’m always looking for new books to recommend to my writers. Unfortunately, this book had too much fluff, too much of the author's storytelling of her own experiences, and not enough content made universal for the reader to apply to their own books. The book certainly has some nuggets of writing wisdom, but you have to go fishing in a pretty big pond to find them. I also strongly disliked the chapter titles. They didn't really tell what was in the chapters for the most part. As someone who reads a lot of nonfiction, I like to review the table of contents before reading a book to see what's coming up, and if I like a book, I refer back to that ToC to go directly to the information that I believe would be helpful. Cutesy chapter titles just don't work for me. The author has an attitude as well, sometimes disparaging of her potential readers. I never like to see that in a nonfiction book. Unless you enjoy being occasionally belittled and sift through a lot of chaff to get to the wheat, so to speak, I recommend finding another book on writing nonfiction books.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I usually don’t read books like these, but I'm really glad I picked this one up!

It was filed with helpful advice, sound action items, and the occasional witty, I dare say sarcastic, humor. It reminded me a bit of the “How to... for Dummies” books, but more helpful and less humor.

I found myself taking notes and laughing to myself as I read it. 10/10 would recommend if you’re beginning to contemplate writing a book.

I should say though, that it is practical advice in an inspirational sort of way, like thinking about how you want your readers to feel when they read your book, as opposed to a formula of how to write a bestseller.

I took notes and highlighted a lot of the first two chapters right away. These is good general writing information in this book. About mid-way it becomes an advertisement for Book Launchers. It’s meta because that’s what the first chapters say to do. It closes with a good amount of ideas again. There are things like how to market to Amazon, using key words, promos and reviews. She gives a lot on how to format the book and details on selling. It’s not just books. There are parts on lectures, book podcasting and networking.
Keeping this book handy to review and remind myself as I work on nonfiction books in the future.

Great book to guide you through the journey of writing a book: starting from your own book idea and target audience to publishing and getting ranks on selling. The book is great by not providing a receipy for "sweet cookies" and how easy things are but to telling the truth that only hard work pays off. The book is a very well designed step by step guide to publishing world.

Julie Broad explains things I never knew that I never knew about different publishing options. Did you know that there are books on best seller lists that are not monetarily successful? At the same time, there are books that sell thousands of copies that never make it to those lists. Traditional publishing generally leaves you little control of your own work and profit margins, but still, you are responsible for much of your own promotional activity. Self-publishing can be a great deal of work, but the author lists numerous types of resources that can lead you through the process. From hiring up to three editors, not all of whom care about commas or spelling, to buying ISBN’s for your different formats, this is a must-read book.

The book was an easy read for me, and there is a focus on writing to a target audience. Many tips are offered on how to begin marketing before your book launches and how to continue after books are available. There may be much non-book money to be earned once you have achieved credibility as an author and an expert on your subject. Suggestions on outlining and writing for your target audience are included.

I am especially impressed by the many links to outside sources. Although the author would love for you to hire her company to take care of details, she is generous with information on what services they use, and examples of when they employ each one. Someone with the time and energy could clearly succeed with these steps.

If you feel that traditional publishing is the only “real” or “legitimate” option, I hope that you find a top publisher that gives you lot of support in this changing environment. Remember, also, that very few people buy books based on the publisher’s name. Good luck, with that, and be sure to understand everything included in the contract.

This book is very interesting and talks about the ways and process of publishing your book on your own through self-publishing this can be through many ways such as amazon publishing or other platforms and talks about others books and how they missed their opportunities or finding what they can teach others.
I like that they talk about many situations and each chapter is written to intrigue it is also to the point and does not waffle which is also a great thing to have in a book.
There are a few tips in here that I can use when I am planning to write in the fiction section shoving me to just write the book and not distracting me to other tasks in the house that I could do instead.
I like that this goes through the different types of editor and understanding what they do which is great as I thought this was very interesting and very educational.
This book seemed to want to get you to stay hooked but it actually made me annoyed more then any other layout as I prefer a fictional layout or a factual layout to the book and not a mix and match between the two states of writing in this book.
I think that this is a good book overall I just think its boring as it trys to make it intreasting to the public but has not got any new or significant advice for the reader overall. this trys to be relatable but for myself it falls flat but this may be because it is not targeted for my age range.

First fault to admit I did not realize this was for non-fiction my complete miss of the whole title, but I am still happy to have been able to get a copy to read through! Self-publishing whether it may be a different genre or not that is discussed still has a similar way that it is done, and this book was full of many helpful resourceful ways to go about it. I think to myself one day I will want to try to write, and this gave some good direction so maybe I will be able to put it to some good use! This book seemed to have a good balance in ideas and planning to go about self-publishing and would be good for any writer to go through and have as a resource. Thank you Goodreads giveaways for the copy to review and get some great tips hopefully to utilize in the near future!

Thank you to NetGalley and Stick Horse Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Although this book was technically intended for nonfiction writers who are pursuing self-publishing (hence the title), this ended up being an incredible resource for nonfiction writers in general. My ultimate goal is to someday publish a nonfiction self-help book, and I found the information in Broad’s book to be invaluable. I will be investing in this book so that I am able to refer back to it as needed. An easy, breezy read filled with humor, stories, and useful tools I can apply to my writing.

For all you Indies out there – don't read this book. At your own peril.

If I were to follow it with a subtitle I'd go for: A Swiss army knife of practical to dos and to avoids.
Given three words to describe Julie's book I'd go for insightful, comprehensive and counterintuitive.
Given one quote to associate the book with, I'd choose 'The obvious is not always apparent' - Paco Underhill.

Off the bat, let me clarify my perspective. I am a newborn indie (2025 vintage). One cliché would be therefore to say: I wish I had read the book before my foray into Indieland. Such a statement would be fragmental, though. First, I have already weaved some of the wisdoms into my ongoing effort #1. Second, advice provided will provide for a more insightful negotiation of the route the subsequent #s.

The following statement from the introduction knocked sock off me. 'The typical nonfiction book focuses on the author, not the reader, and that sets up the book (and author) for massive marketing challenges right from the start.' Yep, I fell into this incidious trap and apparently I did follow the crowd, so to speak.

The counterintuitive angle Julie provides on specifics like dedication is nothing short of priceless.
I was pleased that Julie introduced me to Dr Hook (not to be confused with 70s rock band). Sure, I was familiar with the concept of hook and capturinf one's attention. Julie guided me how to transplant the concept into relevant practicalities (with surgical precision, I'd rush to add).

Overall I met a book structure whereby concepts once presented are complimented with examples that allowed me to embrace adage on offer.

Comprehensiveness of the book, by definition, entails some contextual redundancy for any indie at any point of time. You might not need a few chapters for your current project and yet you might find the very same chapters directly relevant to another down the line. It's a valuable reference in all your indie adventures.

I said it upfront, and I reiterate it at the end:
For all you Indies out there – don't read this book, at your own peril

Not terrible, not great.

I really wanted to like this book because I've been following Julie's Book Launchers YouTube channel for years and I usually really enjoy the videos they put out.

This book just didn't have the same professional and solid feel to it.

The chapter titles are a bit odd and obscure and not super useful for someone who wants to find information on the go. The chapters themselves have a bit of an odd flow with major sections and subsections not being clearly defined and bolded and italicized words throwing off the flow of the read. I get it's to add emphasize but why not just make the section title clear so you don't have to emphasize the point in bold? Just felt odd but I'm open to hearing the logic behind the decision.

P.153 offers advice about what to put on the back cover. Julie says putting your website on the back cover is a good idea, but when I went to she how she did it, I found out she didn't. There was no website link on this book's back cover. Same for testimonials. Maybe she just couldn't find any.

In place of where the testimonials would be, she put 5 promises about what the book delivers. Three of these have no clear place in the book, 1 sounds interesting but then the title associated with it sounds off-putting and like work, and the final one is almost word for the word the same as one of the chapters. Feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to make 5 promises and then quickly deliver on each one with corresponding chapter titles.

Speaking of chapter titles, I was expecting there to be one on what exactly the "no boring books way" is. After reading the whole book, I'm still kind of left wondering what this way is. It made the cover, why isn't there a clear place where it's broken down for the up and coming authors?

The book has some great information in it, but the issues listed above and others that I had while reading it made the entire thing feel a bit sloppy.

I think with a little bit of work this book could be tightened up to be extremely useful and recommendable.

I truly enjoyed Self-Publish & Succeed: The No Boring Books Way to Writing a Non-Fiction Book that Sells by Julie Broad. Some of the information I knew from reading other books on writing and publishing in the past. Julie Broad gives a great step-by-step process on how to publish a non-fiction book and how to write the best book that you can. Some of her processes for writing a book I would approach differently, but overall I liked her step-by-step process. One of the sections that stood out to me was her chapters on traditional versus self-publishing and the specific things to think about when you’re done writing your book and you want to sell it.

I would recommend this book for writers who want to write non-fiction books. I am writing a fiction book, so some of this information did not apply to me. This is a book that I can reference if I want to write a non-fiction book in the future and I can use the later chapters to make sure my publishing goes as smoothly as possible. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

If you're running a business selling services to customers then this book could be the introduction to writing a non-fiction book that you need in order to promote your expertise and services. If, like me, the non-fiction book that you're interested in writing are more in the history/cultural analysis /nature sphere and unlinked to any current business venture then there are parts of this book that are less relevant.

This is more a book about how to self publish rather than a craft book on how to write compelling non-fiction. The author is a strong advocate for self-publishing and provides lots of information on the self-publishing landscape and ecosystem but you'll probably still need to research each section once you get to it in order to make informed choices for yourself.

The author is also very pro-AI - you'll need to make your own mind up on the ethics of whether to use AI or not.

You need to read this book if you are either considering writing a book, or if you are already writing one. Julie Broad is an expert in self-publishing. This book will give you the essential information you need to help you in every step along the way, from deciding if you want to write a book to marketing the book.

Julie does a great job in helping you to understand what not to do and what to do along the way to publishing a successful book. The importance of using a good outline, to save you time in the long run, and the methods for doing so, are explained.

One of the most beneficial parts of the book, is where she explains how much attention should be given to the design of both the front and back covers of your book. Especially beneficial is the quick-front-cover-checklist.

If you are writing a book and are considering going the self-publisging route, do yourself a favor and read this book.

As the founder of Book Launchers, Julie Broad makes her living from helping people write and publish their non-fiction book. This is a new way for her to help more of us. While the book is aimed at non-fiction authors, there is a huge trove here for fiction authors as well.

Are you writing a book or thinking about it? If so, time spent reading this book will save you hours of wasted time on your own. Some practical tips to save time include outlining (Do you know the three main methods of outlining?) and two ways of writing your book without actually “writing” your book.

I will have to read Julie's book at least once more as I so enjoyed the style and flow of the book that I didn't take note of all the great information. I wish I had read it before publishing any of my Henley Santa books.

As a self-published children’s author, I thought that I knew everything about how to self-publish. Julie’s book showed me that I was wrong. I had never considered what to include in the pages on "Look Inside" for a start.

I can't say enough good things about this book.

The author offers solid suggestions on finding your own niche, and the reasons to create your book, series, and author platform. She is also not afraid to dig deep as a way to help readers find the aspects of our own lives, successes and failures, and personal journey that will be most interesting (and marketable) for our potential readers "Even if you've never wanted to be published," she explains, "you've been rejected. That's an emotion we can almost universally relate to."

I would also be remiss if I did not mention my favorite sentence in the book though: "Keep your book fluff-free!" Brilliantly written throughout-- and the author always finds a way to deliver a wealth of strong content while maintaining a delightful sense of humor throughout.

Very highly recommended.

This is exactly what you hope for in a how-to book of this nature. Self-publishing as a topic can be a scary proposition, and with so many different companies and avenues owning the paths to publishing, there's a lot for the beginning reader to face with some trepidation. There's a lot for experienced, published authors to face with some trepidation as well. For any traditionally published author, self-publishing may have been playing its siren call for years, and now the seasoned author has a chance to enter the realm with a solid, sound guide in-hand. What we all hope for is an engaging, honest, multi-faceted, funny and inspiring book full of action steps and warnings. That's what you have here.

Julie Broad, the author of ‘SELF PUBLISH AND SUCCEED - THE ‘NO BORING BOOKS’ WAY TO WRITE A NON-FICTION BOOK THAT SELLS’, writes in this book “Good writing makes a reader turn pages and rave about what they just learned.” That’s exactly what I felt myself doing as I read. It was like Julie Broad was in the room with me, speaking to me directly, illustrating her words with her own rich experiences. I’ve been saying I’m going to write and self-publish a book for years.
