this was a nice, quick listen on audible about the intricacies of space and the possibilities of finding extraterrestrial life. it was such a fascinating listen. space in general has always been so interesting to me, so i’m glad i listened to this audible original
I loved the enthusiasm of the professor, and she covered all the basics. My only complaint is that she spent a little too much time bowing to the environmentalists... not out of fear, but probably because she is one. It is not too terrible, but it does get a little preachy when she hits that subject.
A fantastic listen, and a book read by the author is always fascinating to experience.
In between the standard astronomy details there are multiple highlights of personal comedy, such as the author accidentally lying to Barack Obama about an exoplanet's light distance from earth.
There are some great insights in this work to the hyperbole we typically see in media about life possibilities on other worlds. The possibility of life on other plants is very different to there ACTUALLY being life there, and that is a key theme of this work.
If you have an interest in SETI, worldwide collaboration on it, exobiology, general astronomy and personal insights in these areas, then this is a good work to dive into. Being read by the author is a great factor of mimesis, and I highly recommend if you enjoy this field.
I got this Great Courses book solely because of the title and imagined reading about Area 51 and other popular stories about secret contact. What I got was much better. Sarah Rugheimer walks us through what we know about the possibilities of life in the universe and how our scientists are trying to discover if it actually exists. I was absolutely fascinated. It’s never bad for a fan of science fiction to indulge in a little genuine science—especially when it’s conveyed by someone as capable as Dr. Rugheimer.
Woo hoo… finally a book of our future in space, a future many generations in the future. As an adherent of our scientific Astro expert’s Sarah Rugheimer’s book is a breath of fresh air. It does not matter which company’s finances future space programmes as along as you remember those that finance it make the choices about what information is released for our consumption. Anywho… this book is about the space that explains our past, the space that surrounds our future, the space that ripples, waves and has holes, the space where nothing is static, the space like the adage - no one crosses the same river twice - we all live in, the only planet we must prove we can protect while working with the natural environment to power a healthy holistic future for every carbon based life form here, before we kill our future for the greed of a few. Congratulations and thank you for your words of wisdom, knowledge, expertise and eloquence Sarah Rugheimer, very much appreciated. :-)
Really concise and well presented series of lectures that cover history, mechanisms, methods and problems around searching for extraterrestrial life. Definitely would listen to again and recommend to others who are interested in getting a bit more information about this subject.
Loved the simplicity of such a complex subject. Sarah makes things come alive and holds your attention throughout with simple language yet strong evidence.
