Andrew Smith wrote the Doctor Who television story Full Circle and its novelisation. At the time of initial broadcast, he was the youngest writer to contribute to the TV series.
Smith submitted his work to more than one Doctor Who script editor. They replied with "positive criticism". Finally he sent The Planet that Slept, which became Full Circle.
Shortly afterwards, he became a police officer, spending a long time in that career.
Smith was approached by Big Finish and displayed interest in writing for them. Because he had started the trilogy with Full Circle, they asked him to write a Companion Chronicles story set in E-Space. The Invasion of E-Space was released in October 2010.

All'interno del range “UNIT: The New Series”, ecco che si apre la sottoserie “Nemesis”, in quattro volumi, di cui il primo “Between Two Worlds” introduce un arco narrativo che porterà Kate Stewart e il suo team a scontrarsi con il Signore del Tempo più psicotico di sempre, niente di meno che l'Undici. Per sventare i suoi piani nefasti, Kate e Osgood saranno affiancate da altri alleati: Harry Sullivan, finito in quell'epoca chissà come; la futura ex companion del Quarto Dottore, Naomi Cross; e la misteriosa figura nota a tutti solo con il nome di Curatore.
Il boxset si apre con “The Enemy Beyond”, che subito ci porta a faccia a faccia con l'Undici dopo che uno scienziato marino viene risucchiato su un altro pianeta da un portale interdimensionale, aperto da Arco trovato sui fondali. Come al solito l'Undici è un maestro nella manipolazione, e i suoi misteriosi piani per l'Arco lo portano a creare scompiglio per le strade di Edimburgo.
Nel secondo episodio, “Fire and Ice”, cambiamo completamente ambientazione e ci ritroviamo nell'Outback australiano, dove ci sono problemi proprio con una specie aliena che mai ci si aspetterebbe di trovare in un luogo così caldo: i Guerrieri di Ghiaccio. Kate e Osgood vi si dirigono immediatamente per fornire supporto a due agenti che si trovano già lì: gli ex companion del Quarto Dottore, Harry Sullivan e Naomi Cross. Se non avete idea del perché il primo si trovi in quell'epoca o di chi sia la seconda, non temete, non vi siete persi nulla: le loro storie saranno raccontate nella stagione 13 di "The Fourth Doctor Adventures" in uscita nel 2024 (fa girare la testa quanto in anticipo li registrano). Questa storia è più disconnessa dalla trama generale, anche se ci sono dei collegamenti, e più che altro serve a introdurre questi personaggi. Mi è piaciuta l'interpretazione che Christopher Naylor ha dato di Harry, anche se ammetto che la voce di Ian Marter non è abbastanza fresca nella mia memoria per fare un confronto obiettivo. Per quanto riguarda Naomi non mi sono ancora fatta un'idea, perché succedono così tante cose in questo episodio da non lasciare spazio al personaggio, quindi mi riservo un giudizio per il futuro.
In “Eleven's Eleven”, l'Undici si mette a capo di una banda di criminali al fine di rubare una serie di gioielli che in realtà sono artefatti alieni, sempre collegati ai suoi piani per l'Arco, qualunque essi siano. Poiché i membri della banda sono casualmente undici, ecco il gioco di parole del titolo, ma in realtà l'unico personaggio che si sente è Ava, e oltretutto poca enfasi viene data a come svolgerà il furto, bensì si concentra maggiormente sulla caccia al ladro della UNIT.
L'episodio conclusivo di questo primo volume, “The Curator's Gambit”, è interessante per la presenza del Curatore, che invece del solito cameo misterioso come successo di “The Day of the Doctor” e in ”Stranded”, qui ha un ruolo centrale. La UNIT ha infatti chiesto il suo aiuto per nascondere l'Arco nella Under Gallery, cosa che comporterà uno scontro diretto con l'Undici. Sono quindi riuniti tutti i personaggi principali (inclusa una breve apparizione di Harry), portando anche ad un finale cliffhanger per un regular della serie. L'ambientazione non si limita alla Under Gallery, ma si sposta anche in un mondo molto più suggestivo e fantasioso che è perfetto per lasciar andare l'immaginazione e sarebbe stato affascinante da vedere in video.
Essendo solo il primo volume di quattro, i veri piani dell'Undici rimangono un mistero fino alla fine, e sono assai impaziente per il seguito. È davvero interessante vedere l'Undici lontano dal Dottore, a confrontarsi invece con gli umani e il nostro mondo contemporaneo, e come i membri della UNIT reagiscano a loro volta a questo nuovo Signore del Tempo, memori delle loro esperienze con il Maestro.
È il primo volume della UNIT che ascolto e ne sono rimasta molto soddisfatta. Non vedo l'ora di ascoltare il seguito.

Nuova stagione per la UNIT in casa Big Finish e, oltre ai soliti noti, abbiamo il piacere di vedere coinvolti anche The Eleven e il Curatore.
1.1 The Enemy Beyond by Andrew Smith
Si parte tranquilli, con il recupero a Edimburgo di uno strano portale che fa tanto Stargate. Peccato che, dopo aver liberato il portale dallo strato di sedimenti preistorici che lo vedeva inglobato, si ritrovino in uno mondo sconosciuto con un Time Lord non proprio affidabile.
Dopo aver capito il rischio rappresentato da entrambi, portale e Time Lord, Kate e Osgood si troveranno in lotta contro il tempo per impedire la solita catastrofe.

Dalla Scozia all'Australia, sulle tracce di Harry Sullivan, interpretato da Christopher Naylor, per ottenere il suo aiuto.

Ovviamente lo scopo è creare un dispositivo che gli permetta di rientrare in possesso del portale e, nel frattempo, eliminare UNIT e, forse, la Terra.
1.4 The Curator’s Gambit by Andrew Smith
Per proteggere il portale, Kate lo porta nella Under Gallery, libera da zygon ma ancora piena di manufatti pericolosi e dipinti particolari.
Non appena The Eleven penetra nella struttura, il Curatore si mette in moto per proteggere il portale e tutto quello che è conservato nella sua galleria.
Forse molti luoghi comuni, voluti o meno, ma la solita buona chimica tra i vari personaggi storici della serie. L'introduzione di Mark Bonnar e Tom Baker nel gruppo e il ripescaggio del personaggio di Harry Sullivan non fanno altro che arricchire e rendere più interessante il tutto.
Come sempre ci sono collegamenti e riferimenti con il passato della serie, sua video che audio, ma nulla che renda incomprensibile la trama.

This volume contains the first four episodes of a 16-episode "season" featuring the modern version of UNIT - and, if rumours about a 2025 UNIT mini-series from the BBC are true, it may be the last for a while, at least with this particular cast lineup. The plot concerns an alien artefact uncovered from Palaeocene deposits off the coast of Scotland which, for reasons as yet unclear, renegade Time Lord the Eleven is trying to get his hands on.
The second episode, "Fire and Ice" is something of a peculiarity. That's not because it's largely unconnected with the larger plot arc, concerning instead Ice Warriors in the Australian Outback - that helps break things up and works well. The oddity is that it features Harry Sullivan, apparently transported from the original UNIT era into the present day. We're told that this was due to an "incident" but no further information is forthcoming, as if we're expected to already know about it. I thought perhaps I'd skipped an earlier release, but nope... perhaps it's in a later one intended to come out before this one but delayed for some reason. This leaves Harry's companion, Naomi Cross, similarly unexplained, introduced as if she's a familiar character when she's entirely new and not receiving much in the way of development or anything in the way of background here.
That peculiarity aside (and, in contrast, The Eleven gets to explain who he is no fewer than three times for the benefit of listeners who haven't encountered him before) it's an action-packed storyline full of UNIT helicopters and soldiers dashing about across various parts of the UK. The Eleven is suitably menacing, Osgood is clever, Kate gets to be suitably noble, and there's a significant guest spot for the Curator. The last episode of the four is particularly inventive, building on Day of the Doctor and using both the National Gallery and Hampton Court Palace to good effect.
The set ends on a cliffhanger for one of the supporting characters, and with several questions left unanswered, but otherwise this collection of episodes forms a neat little arc of its own within the larger season.

Well, I really liked this.
More so than several of the previous UNIT stories.
UNIT has always been pretty much hit and miss with me.
But this one?
We have some really great ideas and real spark of creativity.
The Eleven is used perfectly, he is an intimitating threat, clever, uncontrollable, deadly.
He never slips into annoying territory, like he sometimes did in other releases.
The pacing is great, sound design and effects are great.
There is just one hickup that broke immersion for me, but it is something that could not have been done another way just by the nature of the recording.
Otherwise, some clever ideas (Ice Warriors in Australia!), great pacing, perfect performances.
Kate and Osgood were fantastic.
I especially loved the last story, featuring the Undergallery, the hidden traps, harking back to the Time Lord paintings we see in Day of The Doctor.
I also really liked the Curator in this, he even has his own epic encounter with the Eleven, and the idea is pure gold.
The Curator is used well, he keeps his mystique, not even Osgood suspects anything (I bet he is wearing a perception filter! It is Osgood, after all, she otherwise would have him figured out in no time).
Very good release, I am very much looking forward to the next one. Curious to find out more about where this is going and who the adversary is.

A great start to a new range of UNIT Adventures. Set i assume during the 12th Doctor's Era since Missy was referenced we've returning characters but some new ones added to the UNIT roster, most noticeable Naomi Cross and Harry Sullivan which I'm sure will all be explained in the future as they're both due to star together in the 4th Doctor Adventures. It's a nice touch because it shows how interwoven the Doctor Who Universe can be at times.
Cast is superb as are the stories, Mark Bonnar was an absolute joy within this set as The Eleven, certainly a different Villian for UNIT to face having already gone up against The Master.
The stories are linked but slightly independent from themselves, but with it being a 4 part series there are underlying connections which i look forward to hearing more about.

This was my listen for Big Finish’s “Ice Warriors Sunday,” and it might be my favorite UNIT set thus far. The Eleven played off of the characters here very well with their villainous ways, and The Curator was fun and enigmatic as ever.

The unit gang has a adventures involving and arch that takes people to another dimension. There the eleven escapes and causes havoc in the real world.

This set had its ups and downs for sure, but the appearances of the Eleven as well as the Curator are more than enough to make up for any short comings.
