Carolyn Clare Givens is a displaced Northerner exploring the foreign ways of the South. She works at New City Church in North Carolina and does freelance editing and writing, as well as being a founder of Bandersnatch Books. Carrie lives in Charlotte with her literary cat, Lord Peter Wimsey. She has previously bumped around the world, both as a missionary kid and adult. You know how there are some books that are hard to categorize? This book is one of them. It's most easily described as YA Fantasy, but if that genre makes you think of love-struck, moody dragon-vampires, you need to set aside your misconceptions for this wonderful book. This book is a treasure found off the beaten path.
One stormy night, Anya turns up on Karan and Richard's doorstep, and their lives are never the same. Following the Chosen One story arc, the story takes the reader on a journey of conversion, discipleship, sacrifice, miracles, intrigue, and revolution. I especially relate to the character of Karan as embraces her role of storyteller. This book is beautiful and should not be missed!

I very rarely read a book twice. Normally I can go through a book, digesting it slowly, but not ROSEFIRE. The plot unrolled in such a way, that I found I just MUST at least start the next chapter, and the next and the next ...to see what happens next! So now, I MUST read it again, a bit slower this time. Carrie Givens has woven the words and phrases as if they were music, they seem to lead the reader in a dance of sorts.

Really debated whether or not to give this five stars. I read it in an evening and enjoyed it a lot. However, I promptly forgot to add it to GR for a month... so four stars? Definitely would recommend this to just about anyone. Good fantasy elements with a strong theme, excellent plot + pacing, plenty of suspense, and wonderfully well-developed characters.

I finished this book after only beginning it hours before. Although I'm struggling to find just the right words to categorize it or tell about it, I am not struggling with how this beautiful story made me feel: more grounded, more at peace, more hopeful for my own story. This is the kind of book I'm always hoping to read, one that spirits me away to another place but returns me to my own place not merely distracted, but feeling a little more myself. Learning some of the story of the author's own journey writing it only deepened my appreciation for this book.

This one is for fans of stories with a bit of symbolism, fans of Rae Carson's Fire and Thorns series, for anyone who enjoys (or even can tolerate) fantasy. If this is you, I recommend reading this one right away.

Karan, a young noble of Asael, narrates a year of momentous changes in the kingdom.

This is young-adult fantasy, but it avoids the two things that most non-teens hate about the genre -- Rosefire doesn't have overwrought angsty love triangles or creepily sexual fight scenes. The fighting and the love stories are present but not at all the focus. (Bonus: very few "brooding" scenes - where a character just sits with their head in their hands wondering out loud what they're supposed to do next. Those are the worst part of YA fiction and thankfully absent here).

As in most YA fantasy stories, Rosefire contains ancient prophecies of a messianic-type figure, and the story revolves around the teens and young adults discovering and embracing this messiah figure. Often those prophecies are background information and related only as asides -- in Rosefire, the prophecies and belief systems are central. This book actually shows individual characters reading and discussing the prophecies and explaining their own experiences of sensing the Creator's presence or care.

These scenes can be very moving for readers who have had their own meaningful religious and spiritual moments. (Also, teasing out the prophecies is the primary mystery the readers get to unravel).

World-building is not overly descriptive but it is definitely believable. There are undercurrents of discussions about class and wealth. I especially loved Karan's revelation that buttons (and ostentatious clothes in general) are oppressive both to the maids AND the nobles.

It ends at just the right moment -- enough is resolved that we can step away, but there is a hint of room if Givens opts to expand the universe into another book.

Very enjoyable. Will read again, and will have my kids (pre-teens) read it, too.

Rosefire is one of those stories that draws you in and surprises you. From new author, Carolyn Clare Givens, Rosefire is a story of growing up and growing into one's calling. Her characters discover who they are and must decide if it's worth it to stand true to their callings. In doing so they discover how much more is at stake than just their own stories.

I love the way the story develops and the growth of the writer seen in the book itself. The author weaves in themes of grace and love with a delicate touch and turns the story around to surprise the reader with its tender conclusion that leaves you waiting for more.

This tale of love, friendship, and hope, will delight any reader who enjoys a fantasy story. It is the perfect tale for 2021, reminding us of what new beauty and wonder can come out of the ashes of so much grief and loss.

Rosefire is graceful — simple in some ways and meaningful in a lot of ways. It’s an allegory, a romance, and a call to tell the stories of our lives and our neighbors’ lives, whoever they may be. Rosefire is a challenge to all forms of leadership that come through fear and force. With beautiful details of setting and evocative imagery of imagination, Rosefire asks what it takes to believe in something bigger than yourself. But not stopping there, Rosefire asks what it takes to drive out fear. Read this story, if only to answer that question.

An excellent work of fantasy! This book is just as much about relationships and restoration as it is about kings, nobles, peasants, and magic. Rosefire follows a hodgepodge team of nobles, peasants, and priests as they seek to restore the throne of their failing kingdom to its rightful king. Follow them through conspiracies and heartache as they struggle to right wrongs—theirs and the wrongs of generations before them. Enjoy!

Rosefire is a beautiful story. It contains mystery, magical gifts, sacrifice, a longing for justice and a journey to learn to walk a path of loving righteousness in its pursuit.

The characters begin to discover that they are known and they are loved, that there is redemption for failure and a hope for the future. It’s the kind of story that encourages the heart.

I have always enjoyed Carolyn's writing style, her insight and the way she paints pictures with words. And Rosefire did not disappoint. The opening paragraphs pulled me in and I couldnt put it down. Now I can read it again, more slowly so I can savor the nuances I'm sure I missed in my quest to find out what happened next.

Rosefire is beautiful story interwoven with themes of friendship, trust, redemption, reconciliation, and much more. The story flowed well, and the pages turned quickly and easily. The characters became my friends. I found myself joining their cause and hoping their hopes. I especially loved how true a character was to his or her faults. There was a true humanness to them. They felt duty, which I love in a novel. The recurring questions of “What if I fail? What if I forget?” The answer, of course, being simply to seek Him Who Knows Men’s Thinking and surround yourself with good counsel on purpose. It was beautifully fleshed out.

This may be YA, but be sure to read it whatever your age. Come witness a beautiful tapestry unfold.

Rosefire is a young adult fantasy like no other I have read. It is entertaining, but thought provoking at the same time. Within its pages I found the magic and mystery that I love in the genre but also the deeper themes of identity and purpose.

Karan stands up to her fierce father by bringing Sephanya in out of the storm and welcoming her into her home. Little does she know at the time, how this small act of bold kindness will transform her life. Karan is challenged to look at the world differently because of the friendship she forms with “Anya” and the experiences they share as they strive for the good of the kingdom.

It is an adventure not to be missed full of action, intrigue and inspiration from He Who Knows Men’s Thinking.

My heart.... I love all these characters! (Except for the horrible ones). Yet, Karan has a special place in my heart. I can't help but love her compassion and gentleness. But to watch to grow both from doubtful to faithful, from fearful to gentle-bravery... she inspires me! I LOVE her bond with her brother, Richard! Their sibling love and relationship made me grin. But the ROMANCE! (No spoilers, but it made my heart oh so happy for her!)

And then there's Karan's growing friendships with Anya and the many more men and women she encounters.

All I can say is that Karan was the perfect person to share the stories of Asael!

Somehow, I don't think there are enough words to describe this beautiful, soul-stirring story. A story of a kingdom in a crisis with the sudden loss of its prince, the king dying, and the nobles moving to seize power. And in the midst of this crisis, a young noblewoman name Kara and her brother Richard, allow into their homes a girl with a mysterious past and a divine destiny. That one act of kindness will send them on an incredible journey that will not only change lives but set a course that will bring a new age for their kingdom forever.

This story is so unique and beautiful--- full of mystery, family bonds, faith, joy, laughter, heartache, political dangers, characters with flaws, strengths, and even hope... I could go on and on. All threads woven into a tapestry leading to the Hope of He Who Knows Men's Thinking.

Briming inside is a single message: only Love can truly save the world.

I loved this book! I could barely put it down. The characters were believable and fun. The story was awesome.

My favorite characters in this book were Karan, Richard, Edmund, and Anya.

Karan was easy to relate to. She had hardly any choices in her life until she chose to speak up for Anya. Even though she was scared of her father she spoke up for Anya who needed shelter. Karan is brave, admirable, trustworthy, and kind. she has her flaws to. One flaw is how she discounts herself and her ability to help.

Richard is kind, thoughtful, and a teasing older brother. The end of his story in the book was not surprising. I really was glad for him. I won't spoil it by telling though. You will have to read it yourself.

Edmund is a great character. He is kind, loyal, and true. He loves Karan. He is also a spy for the Rose. Which I thought was very brave.

Anya is demure but powerful, has a kind heart, and is a healer. She sacrifices the most in this story.

This is a story of friendship and love I believe. It's told by a Christian author and there are strong elements of Christianity in this fantasy book. It doesn't mean it's not a great book. It just means you will get a Christian viewpoint. Which isn't all that bad considering I'm a Christian. It's a great book and I would recommend it for anyone who loves fantasy. I'm not going to tell anymore. You should read it yourself.

So lovely. Just as good as I remembered, or maybe better. I wanted to re-read after finishing “The Princess and Curdie” by George MacDonald, thinking surely it had a strong influence on this one; however, the afterword says differently, to my surprise. Regardless, I’m excited for my now-13yo to read it.

Rosefire is a delightful read. I listened to it, read by the author, which was well done, though I look forward to reading it with my eyes at some point.

So very clean, especially considering it is called "YA"; except when a vile character hints at an unbecoming situation, there isn't even an idea of inappropriate romance. The romance that is shown is sweet and generally understated. It's there, but it isn't the story.

There is some violence, but it isn't graphic in that while the act of murder is sometimes described, it is stated rather than displayed, and then you move on.

I'm trying to make sure I'm there before I say it, but I think this is something I can allow for my 12yo.

This book made me think of the Chronicles of Narnia with it's aligoryish plot. This book should stay as a book and not be turned into a movie. It's book form makes it what it is as a unique fantasy. Though I would still watch the movie if there was one.
One thing I loved about this book is that it taught me to just hand over my fears to God. Why is that? It was inspired because of the way Karan and Anya every time they feared anything whether it was Lord Admiras or Brother Ezra's death they always handed over their fears to He Who Know's Man's Thinking. Thank you Carolyn for writing this amazing book!!!

I listened to this book on audible and was almost immediately sucked in. The story is just beautiful. It is a story of love, friendship, forgiveness, growth, redemption (sometimes surprisingly so), and joy. One of my favorite parts of this book is the sibling relationship between Karan and Richard. Very rarely, in any mode of storytelling, do we see loving and healthy sibling relationships. This is one story that just does a lovely job at showing how supportive and filling sibling bonds can be. I honestly loved it so much.

I would give 4.5 stars if I could. I enjoyed it very much. This is the kind of book that I want my kids to read and draw life application from without realizing that they are. There is a ton of laudable character throughout the book, but it isn't preachy. The ending is fairly predictable, but still enjoyable. I would say most middle grade readers could read this, but it is certainly approprate for high school and up.
