God Will Prevail

Rate this book
"The Lord is gathering those who are willing to let God prevail in their lives. The Lord is gathering those who will choose to let God be the most important influence in their lives."

—President Russell M. Nelson

By entering into covenants with His people, God forges vital connections that allow Him to guide and bless His children in incredible ways. Latter-day Saints have long been encouraged to stay on the covenant path—but what is that path, and how do we stay the course? In God Will Prevail: Ancient Covenants, Modern Blessings, and the Gathering of Israel, BYU Professor of Religion Dr. Kerry Muhlestein encourages readers to take hold of God's promise to gather His covenant people by recognizing the connection between covenant making and the eternal and transformative love of the Savior.

Discover the obligations and blessings of making and keeping sacred covenants, as outlined in the standard works, with insights on topics ranging from temple work and family history to covenant language, the gathering of Israel, and the equalizing power of Christ's Atonement. With clarity and hope, this groundbreaking book speaks to this powerful truth: promised blessings and gatherings are available to all who truly seek to be covenant keepers.

President Russell M. Nelson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints recommended this book as a good place to start to learn about the Hebrew word חסד, (pronounced kheh-sed), a word related to God’s Mercy. The first half of the book was quite repetitive, and I almost gave up on it. However, I am glad I stuck it out because the second half of the book is where this book shines. It’s chapters 7-8 and the three appendices where this book is interesting. It is a good read on how the Abrahamic Covenant is God’s covenant with the children of men from the beginning and continues to be the covenant with us today. I personally believe the word “New” should be removed or rebranded as “Renewed Everlasting Covenant “ for today.

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

If for whatever reason, I go back and reread a good book, I will change the rating to five-star because I read it again.

So many reasons to love this book: 1) The author gives the clearest explanation I’ve read of the Abrahamic Covenant or New and Everlasting Covenant, its history and promises, and how all other covenants are part of it 2) Using examples from Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and modern scripture and prophets, he shows how all Abrahamic Covenant promises are possible only through Christ 3) After explaining covenant promises, he shows how to recognize the covenant in scripture and in the words of prophets and how prevalent covenant themes are when we know how to see them 4) He gives an overview of Israel through time and how covenant consciousness is related directly to righteousness and blessedness on one hand or wandering/scattering on the other 5) And the thread that runs throughout is God’s sure promise to fulfill the covenant by redeeming and gathering Israel in times past and in our day. Insightful from beginning to end.

This books helps readers understand the Abrahamic, or new and everlasting covenant, it’s blessings and cursings. Over the past few years, the covenant path has been emphasized by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book helps the reader understand why this covenant is so important and why the gathering of Israel is the most important work being done on the earth today.
By walking through the history of the covenant and how covenants made today create the covenant, Dr. Muhlestein educates the reader about how Old Testament, New Testament, and restorative scriptures all emphasize the importance of communal covenant making and covenant following.

I'm mad at myself... I read this book and didn't write a review. But I remember the book being amazing. It's one of the rare books I want to buy to give to someone else so they could study it. This book had some really interesting points, heavy points. I remember thinking this book is one I need to read again and study it. Come back to it in a few years when I've gained more knowledge and understanding and see it from a whole new perspective.
