Ebony: I’m stuck at Legacy Academy, trying to live down my big sister’s reputation.
I’m not Raven. But try telling this to the other girls who want my head on a platter. I’m not special. In fact, I’m a big, fat mess. I didn’t want to go to school. I wanted revenge, but like my sister before me, I can’t control my powers. My anger gets in the way and everybody knows it, because my stupid horns pop out of my head when I get mad.

Very Y/A

After reading the first legacy story I expected this to be a bit more grown up. What really dropped stars for me was the sharing of important information in public. Having a meal, walking to the dorm, sitting in class. It just didn't go with "we are in danger"

I won't be reading the rest as the plot hasn't really thickened. A lot of names are being thrown about through out the book that probably won't make an appearance till the end of the series. My eyes automatically started skipping these bits.

Also did we really need the food diary?

Ebony’s Legacy Year One is the follow-up series to Legacy Academy where we follow Raven’s little sister Ebony as she starts her training to master her abilities so she can step into the war against the Dark Demons and the Unseelie.
Ebony, like her sister, has three powerful bloodlines: Golden Demon, Vampire, and Silver Dragon. While she has horns that tend to grow when she’s angry, she has yet to be able to turn into a dragon even as her first year at Legacy is about to begin. Feeling insecure because she feels like the expectations for her are so high, that she’ll never be able to reach them in her sister’s shadow. With Raven being the strongest supernatural in the world, she has huge shoes to fill at the academy.
When she first arrives, she’s stuck rooming with someone who hates her simply because she is Raven’s sister, with an added layer because she knows that Ebony is interested in her best friend’s beau, Gunnar. It doesn’t help that Gunnar’s Catalan dragon, Hades, loves Ebony and frequently seeks her out.
During her first dragon magic class, the instructor believes that Ebony might be cursed and that is why she can’t summon her dragon. As a result, she is sent to the infirmary to get treatment from the academy doctor, Dr. Greenwood. Along the way, Hades shows up to walk with her to the infirmary where he shows that he does not like Dr. Greenwood at all and does his best to keep him away from her. Dr. Greenwood agrees that she might be cursed and makes some sort of foul-smelling concoction for her to drink, but can’t get close enough to make Ebony drink it. Gunnar arrives at the infirmary to help with Hades and see if Ebony is okay. Once Hades is part of Gunnar again, Dr. Greenwood gives Ebony the elixir, which she takes a sip of before Gunnar “accidentally” knocks it out of her hand, shattering the glass and spilling the concoction. Ebony immediately becomes overwhelmingly ill and ends up spending days in the infirmary, waking up to her mother and father by her side. Due to Gunnar’s interference with Dr. Greenwood’s remedy, Ebony’s father sees him as a threat and the cause of her illness. He demands she avoid him from that point on, going as far as to assign a “bodyguard” to make sure she stays away from him.
As the semester progresses, things start to be a bit more off. Students are getting minor injuries that lead to them becoming more and more sick under Dr. Greenwood’s care. The headmaster seems off, not truly listening to concerns and seeming in a fugue state. When Ebony gets into trouble again and her father is called, he notices that something is off about the headmaster and plans a visit to another academy to get the advice of another vampire on what might be happening and how to fix it.
Upon returning to Legacy, Ebony’s father helps start the healing of the headmaster. Now that it has been found that the headmaster was being poisoned, things go on high alert as they try to figure out what is going on while also preparing for the academy games that are approaching quickly. All the while, Ebony is still struggling to turn into a dragon and experiencing weird food cravings, like raw meat. Time is ticking down to find out what is going on at Legacy and why her dragon has yet to appear even though she is developing strong powers like turning into fog and running at the speed of light.
I enjoyed this plot. It gives off Harry Potter vibes, but I found it more enjoyable. Ebony is a wonderful character and I love her determination. It kept me on the edge of my seat yelling at the other characters to realize what the hell was going on. M. Guida created a wonderful world with amazing characters.
Now, onto issues with the book. I, unfortunately, kept getting pulled out of the story due to editing and proofreading errors. It’s almost as if she typed it out and published it without looking it over at all. Some sentences were half changed, a couple of inconsistencies in how names were spelled, a lot of missing or extra words in sentences, and, of course, some normal grammatical errors with punctuation. Don’t get me wrong, I know that things sometimes slip through the cracks, as a writer myself I know it can be hard to catch some things. However, a simple read-through could have caught a lot of the issues.
Even with the editorial issues, I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy. There isn’t any smut in it, some cussing, definitely categorized as a young adult. As previously mentioned, it gave Harry Potter vibes but better. I read this on Amazon Kindle, so I don’t know if the physical copy is as poorly edited. If you can handle getting past the errors, which can be kind of infuriating as you go along, it’s a great story with wonderful characters. Hope this review helps!

This is book five of the Legacy Academy series and the main character is Ebony, who is having to start attending Legacy Academy, where her older sister Raven was a legend. She didn’t want to go, but has no choice in the matter, especially with her own father being the Golden Pheonix, a rare purple dragon shifter. Ebony is like her sister Raven, a mix of silver dragon, vampire and Golden Demon, but has been unable to shift into her dragon shape yet. Something her sister also had a problem with when she started at the academy, but it seems a lot worse with Ebony and is taking a lot more time. She can’t control her powers and whenever she is mad or upset, horns grow from her head, making her a target for the bitchy girls, Nora and Victoria (Tori), the latter who turns out to be her roommate and hates her already because of something her sister did. She is told to stay away from Gunnar, the very person she has been crushing about being with for ages. Gunnar managed to escape a horrible life under his father Ryker, King for the Dark Demons, who made him kill for him and badly mistreated him. He has a Catalan dragon tattooed to his chest called Hades, who has the head of a lion and body of a dragon and can come out of his chest and spring to life.
At least she has her best friend Cadye with her, but not in many of the same classes unfortunately, but a new friend in Jaxon is. Her father and sister Raven, along with the rest of the Defenders, are still hunting down Aibell’s lost medallions, which are the only things that could lock the evil King Cormac and the Unseelie in the Elder Dimension forever. Ebony gets warned to stay away from Gunnar by her father, with Gunnar still thought to be under the control of his father and a danger to them all. She is given another student to help her with her shift, but still doesn’t succeed. Her potions class brings her a bit more success, but she gets reported for using one of them on her roommate. The Academy Games are coming up in a few months and everyone is getting tested on each of the events. Ebony finally manages a transmutation instead of a shift, and it is a very unusual one. Another ability comes to the fore, but she and her friends are getting worried about one of their teachers and the sudden and serious illnesses that seem to be striking people. The head of the school, a very old vampire Anton, is also behaving oddly and they decide to form their own secret group, called the Sentinels, to figure out what is happening.
She now has a personal sidekick Rusty, to keep her away from Gunnar, after Hades managed to cure her, but her father sees it as him refusing to let the doctor heal her. Dark forces are acting in the academy, with a possible doppelganger and others looking for one of these medallions. Lots of action and some strange powers come to Ebony, but leave her hearing a strange voice from within and an unusual need which she doesn’t understand. She can’t ask anyone for help and suffers alone, feeling unstable in the midst of the Games themselves. She and her friends have to get her father and Anton to realise something is wrong, as her father takes Gunnar off to the Hollows, believing he is a danger and attacked her, which Ebony tries to convince him isn’t true. She must now get control of her latest power and prove that Gunnar is not a danger. One of their Sentinels has been lost as evil claims the Blood Stone, but hopefully only a temporary blip in their fight against the dark forces and their enemies. One event leads to another series and this one continues in the next book in this series, with Ebony and her friends having to prepare to continue fighting and to prove her father wrong about Gunnar and vampires as well. I look forward to reading more of this series and catching up on Raven’s story as well as Rusty’s. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

it's painful but addictive at the same time

This entire series so far has so many freaking plot holes and detail errors that it's making my brain bleed. And yet I can't not find out what happens next. I honestly don't understand myself right now.

I hate the linguistics the author uses, which is often very simplistic and almost childish but other times is perfectly fine lulling me into a false sense of reading enjoyment just to flip back to oddly childish sentences in otherwise mature settings.

I love some of the characters but others make me want to be a dragon just so I can watch the world burn. Ebony unfortunately is a terrible mix of the two - I love that she's a bit different, strong and interesting but I HATE despise, loathe how much of a wuss she is. I also despise Vincent entirely in this book. He was barely redeemed in the end of Raven's story and is a million times worse now. I love Rusty and Gunnar but most especially Hades (I defy anyone to dislike that furry little love bug critter). I'm unimpressed with Cayde (worst female bestie ever. Did no one teach her how to stfu because bestie secrets are sacred?) and we don't see much of the others in their friends group but what we do see is unimpressive. Victoria and Nora are just wash and repeat of Eden, Demi and Vivian from Raven's book so I hate the author for utter lack of creativity.

I hate the melodramatics, and the dragged out foreshadowing that is so blatantly obvious it might as well bite the reader in the neck (honestly, if you don't figure it out in the first school day you might not be able to get dressed alone cuz the big surprise is about as surprising as getting wet in the rain). I hate how useless so many characters are in this book. I'm sorry, you're how old and experienced but you can't figure out what is wrong with Ebony or why Hades is growling or that the feeling of evil is a bit on the pervasive side? It's been years since the last war, not generations. They haven't had time to forget the basics like use your intuition.

I DESPISE the author's fascination with getting her young female characters naked in public. If it wasn't so obviously painfully embarrassing and uncomfortable for the characters it wouldn't matter but she puts so much emphasis on the discomfort of being on display. In book one of Raven's series they specifically say that shifting with clothes is in the curriculum for second year students but is too complicated for first year/newbie shifters. Then suddenly every adult, student, king and doppelganger is getting buck naked in public to become their beast. What. The. Actual. Fuckery. She gave herself a path to protecting her female character from discomfort but threw it away immediately because what? It's more fun to make all the young girls uncomfortable? Go find your freaking morals author cuz you seem to have misplaced them.

The continuity is completely out the window. I'm reading in order based on the book list saying read first, read second etc. Somehow there is still a massive gap and just boom here's some characters you knew of but don't know and their backgrounds are resolved but not really but I'm not going to tell you anything while I just shove them into this social group with a shoe horn. I'm struggling to understand the dynamics but all the stuff we need to know is just not here and I don't know if it's in some other book the author hasn't sequenced into the book list.

So why am I so fascinated by this obviously annoying series? I don't know. I feel like the author is an actual witch and she spelled the series to be addictive or something because I don't want to read the next book but I can't not know what happens.

I loved it! It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This story is a slow burn, with a love triangle, forbidden romance, fated mates, and found family. Grab this new romance academy where you’ll met Dragons, Wolves, Demons, Fae, and Vampires. Welcome back to Legacy Academy. The legacy continues with Raven’s sister Ebony’s story. She’s stuck at Legacy Academy, trying to live down her big sister’s reputation. She’s not Raven, but try telling this to the other girls who want her head on a platter. She’s believes she’s not special, that in fact, she’s a big, fat mess and she didn’t want to go to school. Instead, she wants revenge, but like her sister before her, she can’t control her powers. Her anger gets in the way and everybody knows it, because her horns pop out of her head whenever she gets mad. All she wants to do is punish Ryker, King of the Dark Demons, for what he did to her grandparents. She can’t shake this fury, brewing inside her and it’s getting stronger day by day. The only thing that keeps her sane are the two alphas, who are part of the Six Sentinels. They watch over her, but she has to stay away from them. Her power and feelings are too unstable. When she lashes out, crazy things happen and she doesn’t want anyone to get hurt. She wants to run away, but she can’t break the ward keeping her trapped at school, plus, she knows the Sentinels would hunt her down. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I highly recommend to everyone.

Apparently I came into this series on book 5, I had no idea until I went to write this review and discovered it on Goodreads—I wasn’t lost at all. I’m guessing books 1-4 feature different leads, maybe the all-powerful sister? Am definitely open to going back and reading them but it wasn’t necessary to enjoy this book.

I found myself submerged in this world pretty instantly—it was very interesting and Ebony was likable.

🐉 Dragons.
ཀ Academy setting / magical academy.
🐉 Magic & supernaturals, living among humans / in the ‘real world’.
ཀ Vampires.
🐉 Trials & supernatural competitions.
ཀ Shifters.
🐉 Forbidden romance.
ཀ Young adult or new adult (honestly not sure on the age range).
🐉 Royalty.
ཀ Mysteries.
🐉 Wrongful accusations.
ཀ Excellent world-building

Overall:
A fun, fast read. And a good introduction to this author—I’d like to explore more of their works.
4 stars.

🎧 Audio:
This is a fantastic audio production! While it had only one narrator, she pretty much made it sound like a full-cast production with all her different voices and accents. Overall sound quality is perfect—the entire book is absolutely flawless. 5 stars. 🦩

***Possible Spoilers***

Best Read After The first 4 books in the Legacy Academy Series by the same Author.

An excellent book that continues the Legacy Academy series. When Ebony starts her school career at Legacy one of her main worries is that she will be lost in her families shadow. But she should be worried about so much more. With a hidden dragon, a blood craving and being unable to be with the man that she loves will her problems get worse or better?

I found this to be an excellent book. The world is thrilling and action packed and the characters are well developed very relatable. The only drawback was the fact that previous events from earlier books are referred to prolifically and if you have not read those books you might be lost.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Loved this!!

This is the first book in the new legacy series, and this one is about Ebony who is Raven's younger sister. She is attending legacy for the first time as a student but she's terrified that she'll constantly be compared to her amazing sister AND that she still hasn't shifted. Also, she hasn't seen Gunnar for years and he seems not to be interested in seeing her.

This story is a young love story with awesome drama. Ebony doesn't understand why her father has such a problem with Gunnar... And why is the headmaster, Anton, acting so strangely... AND why are all the students sent to the infirmary getting worse, not better. These are all mysteries she has to figure out.

The ending is definitely a cliffy... Omg I can't wait to see what happens next!!!

I received an ARC for my honest review.

Slow. Frustrating. Underdeveloped.

I read the previous series and had high hopes for this book but it was an epic let down. The main character was fumbling along for the majority of the book right up until the last few pages. Constantly ignoring obvious clues and being pretty stupid for lack of better words. Considering this character is supposed to be sister to the other series main character this was a huge let down. I also feel that the book progressed pretty slowly. It felt like a lot of the book was just filler for word count. Not much was being done to progress the characters or plot development. Just a lot of ground hog day fumbling with occasional worthwhile events. Disappointing. I loved the previous Legacy series. I’m not sure Ebony is with giving another chance.

I listened and loved this series. The narrator I really liked listening to her tell the story and she did an excellent job giving the characters a voice and the other voices in the story. I found it interesting and entertaining. This kinda reminded me of Harry Potter. Ebony is entering Legacy and is following in her sister's shadow. In this one Ebony forms a group that is shifters, healers, vampires. There is evil lurching, missing people, shady characters, dopplegangers, people being poisoned. The classes shifting, magic potions, fighting, running. Then there is a big tournament where a bunch of students compete.

Good story

The story was good the editing needs work. A lot of small words were missing like; to, the, and me. It didn't take away from the story but was distracting. I'm kind of disappointed in her big reveal. I was hoping for something more unique. The ending and rejection had my emotions running high. Poor Ebony. Readers could start with this book and understand everything just fine, but it will be clear this is a spin off of another story. I recommend this book to paranormal mystery and Academy lovers.

Ebony has made it to Legacy and is there with her friends from home and new friends she has made at school. She is the typical girl with older famous powerful family members and thinks she is nothing special as she starts out the year. Then things get interesting. It was entertaining, funny, with a touch of a mystery and suspense added into the usual girl finding herself as she grows. I enjoyed the story and watching Ebony grow and get stronger. Plus her friends were a riot as usual.

This is Ebony's first year at Legacy and she's dreading it. She feels she has to live up to the accomplishments of her father, the golden dragon and her famous dragon sister. Problem is, she can't even shift. Thrown into the mix is her roommate hates her and tries to cause her trouble. The boy she's fallen for doesn't seem to notice her. Plus something very strange is going on at Legacy. Great books. I missed a few that I need to read.

great read

Loved reading Ebony’s story and how it links I. With her older sister Raven’s series.
In this book we see new mysteries and the students group together to find the truth. There love and loss, unexpected powers and abilities, evil and above all else strong friendship.
I enjoyed the storyline and could see all the little bread crumb which I suspect we will get the answers in the coming books.
Overall a great read

I liked this book. I did feel like the FMC was a little bit whiny and the book overall had a lot more swearing than Raven’s books which I didn’t love.

I also wish that there was an intro with some more information about what happened between Raven’s books and this one. There were some serious details mission that I wanted.

Overall though, I did like it and am excited to keep reading!

Unsure, but continuing on

Maybe it's because of all the need to set up the story or maybe because I didn't read the other series, but I'm not 100% sold just yet, but I'm intrigued enough to continue. I'm kinda bummed she's not a hybrid vampire dragon with a dragon form, but I'm sure she'll be cool af either way. But how prejudiced her dad is...is a curious storyline as well that I can't wait to discover.

I like the story but…

I kept reading the story and enjoyed it, however the editing in this book is a problem. Nothing is more distracting than misspelled words, words used that are not in context and missing words. This is not the only book of hers that has this issue. Her Legacy novella is atrocious when it comes to editing too. I would like to see what happens but it is not as fun to read bc of the editing issues.

Ebony's Legacy: Year One Review

Another generation of supernaturals are starting Legacy Academy. New characters to fall in love with, a new set of Royals and Defenders. This is Raven's little sister Ebony's first year journey and just like with Raven the pressure is on. A great story with a great plot twist!

Good Story

M. Guida is a good author. The stories are intriguing and good reads for supernatural fans. The only sad part is editing process in these stories. I would offer a higher rating but the mistakes and lack of continuity makes the stories hard to read. It is a testament to the quality of the story that I keep reading in spite of the errors.

Although this is book 1 it is very apparent this is a spin off series in a much larger universe. You get all the back story you need to enjoy the story though. It was a good academy type story that leaves you wanting book 2. It lost a star because some things were very easy to predict but it was still enjoyable.

What am I

I loved reading this story about a young woman with three major blood lines. She is frustrated with not being able to transform into what the rest of her family is. She must learn how to be what she really becomes.

There were a LOT of spelling and grammatical errors in this book. Those kind of mistakes always stop me in my tracks. I thought the book was OK...although it is VERY young adult-ish. If there had been more story, and less yearning for boys, I would have liked it better.

this first book is wonderful.

This book was involved with the legacy academy and those youngsters in shifting and the young vampires. I’d like to kick ebony’s father to the moon and back. He’s not evil but he certainly is not nice.
