Hot Flash Homicides #1

Midlife in Glimmerspell

Rate this book
An impending divorce. A hot homicide detective. And spontaneous time travel.
Midlife in Glimmerspell is proving to be magical.

If I thought the first half of my life was a bumpy ride, I’d better buckle up because I’m about to go over the hill and off the rails.

*A laugh out loud Paranormal Women’s Fiction Novel by New York Times Bestseller Addison Moore*

After catching my husband in bed with another woman, I gave him the heave-ho, put our house on the market, and moved away to an enchanting little town for a brand new start. What I didn’t count on was the fact that enchanting little town might just be—enchanted.

Glimmerspell is rumored to be home to vampires, werewolves, and fae, but those are just simply gimmicks to lure tourists to their snowy little town—aren’t they?

Nevertheless, I’ve got a job at the Haunted Book Barn where my niece films her infamous video blog—Murder, Mayhem, and Baking. She’s somehow wrangled me into helping out with whipping up the sweet treats, and in the middle of filming an episode a hot flash strikes and I’m transported to another time, place, and another day entirely.

If I thought the first half of my life was a bumpy ride, I’d better buckle up because I’m about to go over the hill and off the rails.

Midlife in Glimmerspell can be a real killer.

I was so excited about this book and it didn’t disappoint me! I’m a huge fan of Addison’s books, but I hate to admit that I haven’t read anything by her in a long while. (I’m sooo behind on my TBR!) This book was just want I needed! I loved discovering the new world of Glimmerspell. Her paranormal books are my favorite and this non YA paranormal was a nice change from the ones I usually read. Billie is a colorful, fun and very likable character. (Actually the whole town is full of great characters!;) and the witty dialogue and murder mystery was the perfect combination to keep me interested. I loved that it wasn’t totally predictable and kept me guessing. And I adored the twist at the end. I wish book 2 was available now because the last page definitely left me wanting more!

I wish Glimmerspell was a real town because right now I’d love to take a trip there and escape! (I would really enjoy a latte and a pastry while browsing for books at the Haunted Book Barn right now!;) I think I’ll binge read some of Addison’s cozy mysteries on Kindle Unlimited while I wait impatiently for book two to come out.:) If you’re looking for a fun, quirky book to escape into, I highly recommend this one.

Billie and her daughter Harper are going to Glimmerspell to start over. Billie discovers her husband has been cheating on her and much more. Billie meets some really good looking men at her niece's bookstore. One of the men she spoke to ends up dead after her niece's show. Billie is pointed to as a prime suspect. Billie is introduced to Eliot, he is detective on the force. He is asking her questions about her and Griffin. Billie decides she will look into the murder herself, to clear her name. Billie is also having weird hot flashes, that seem to activate her power. Billie knows that everyone is keeping a secret about the town. Will Billie be able to clear her name and find out the secrets of the town or does is danger closer than she realizes it.

This was a really entertaining introduction to the characters and brand new world. Billie is a quite the character from her reaction to her husband to what awaits her in Glimmerspell. She is sarcastic, funny and loves her family. Billie and Eliot's chemistry is really off the characters, their interactions are so much fun. I am really looking forward to see what is next for Billie and all the others in Glimmerspell. I really recommend reading this book, you will be hooked too.

To be honest, it took me a little bit to get into this book. But I trust the friend who recommended it, and I’m glad I stuck with it. This book is super snarky and fun. Billie, the lead character, reminds me of so many of my friends—and maybe a little of myself, too!—that I felt right at home with her in Glimmerspell. Billie’s sometimes homicidal thought patterns toward her ex-husband and his new squeeze are pretty hilarious, and she makes a great narrator.

My reading patterns of late have included only books that are light, fun, and don’t take too much brain power to process. I don’t have the bandwidth right now for my usual genres of choice (doc fantasy and YA fantasy) and the complicated, complex worldbuilding generally required of those genres, but I am having so much fun reading romcoms, cozy mysteries, and cozy paranormal mystery. This book fit the bill, and I’m already reading Book 2.

This was a typical midlife paranormal book and I'm frankly tired of this formula: midlife woman catches cheating husband, gets rid of him via a divorce, takes kid(s) with her as she moves to another town, the town is a paranormal town, she discovers witchy powers and gets entangled with the local (and usually sexy) law enforcement officer, a murder happens, she gets involved in solving the crime because it probably implicates her as the murderer, etc. Sound familiar? Yes -it's all too familiar and getting very tiresome.

This one was compounded by much sexual tension, hot flashes, yearning, and other feelings that I'm just not interested in being privy to! So. I'm not going to read the next one and I also docked this one another star because the ending was a blatant lead-in (a.k.a. cliffhanger) into the next book. Nope...not going there!

This was just so much fun. I was howling with laughter from the very beginning, and it kept me laughing to the end. There’s also layers and layers of secrets and strange happenings in Glimmerspell that kept me guessing for the whole book. I loved Billie! She’s fierce and feisty and everything I want to be in the second half of my life. I can’t wait to read more from this series.

I feel bad DNFing this because it is well written and I am curious to see where it goes. But the tone is not for me, it’s humorous and I’m sure many will find this very funny but it’s not really my kind of funny and falls a bit flat.

Plus Billie keeps referring to her ex’s new girl as a tramp and ok I can understand bitterness they both treated her so badly. But then she is in the barn and literally every girl is a stupid hot slut that is hitting on both the detective and the victim, and all this animosity is a bit weird since she is horny as fuck. Like literally she drools over three different men in the short time period, and all three basically ask her out and she’s happy to comply, which is okay girl you’re single go out and have fun, but don’t shame girls that do the exact same thing as you.

And i know it’s picky, but meh it was too much lusting and then telling the guys “oh I know you want to shag her” and even dialogues were long and like people would say very long elaborate sentences with like 5 jokes and 10 euphemisms for hot or sexy or sex and it’s not my vibe.
I might give another series by this author a try, they all seem quite interesting but at the moment it’s not what I’m looking for.

Should've stuck with my gut on this one and steered clear of it.

Can't say I much cared for any of the characters or the story.
None of the players came across as real, much less likeable.

The story felt disjointed, chaotic in an all-over-the-place kinda way
Things didn't add up, make sense or where seemingly pulled from thin air

Also, pretty much the whole book is one big tease/mystery about the big dark secrets of the town ...
the reveal pretty late in the book turns out to be a disappointing.

All the boy-crazyness didn't help at all either. I almost quit after her first meeting with Elliot but I was curious about the time travel bit so stuck with it... neednt have bothered...
Really it was like teenage vampire romance meets Real Housewives with a dash of The Originals or something... (none of which I was ever a fan of)

2.5 stars

I listened to this book completely on audio. I went back and forth with this rating and decided on the 2.5 stars with the narration. I think I would have gone up to 3 stars if I had only read it but boy was the narrator - Karen Krause - a challenge to listen to.

This was supposed to be an easy and quick read/listen, and for the most part it was. Unfortunately, it was also stilted in its writing, superficial in its depth and the story was built with characters that I just really couldn't find a reason to root for. In other words.....it pretty much failed on every count.

The basic plot of this story is that our female MC - Billy - walks in on her cheating husband. Said husband has decided to not only cheat on her, but get engaged to his mistress (who is EXTREMELY young) using Billy's engagement ring and get her pregnant. Billy finds all of this out at the same time. So, she takes her 16 year old daughter and moves to a town where she has some family. This town is known for paranormal fame but nobody believes that....right?

Even for a pretty superficial book, this one was hard to swallow. I really had a hard time settling into the story. Everything felt "forced" and the characters seemed to be one dimensional and very stereotypical. I understand that this was supposed to be part of the new Midlife Woman genre, unfortunately I have read many, many other ventures into this genre that tackled this setting much more believably and with better stories.

Loved, loved, loved this new series! Addison Moore has done it again with this foray into the Paranormal Woman's Fiction genre. Billie is in her mid-forties and having caught her husband cheating, must change her life drastically. She uproots her life and her teenage daughter's and moves to Glimmerspell where her grandparents were from. Glimmerspell, a small idyllic town, is not what it seems. Billie lands a job at her niece's bookstore and tries to start her new life. She has sworn off of men forever... Billie is introduced to the "hidden" paranormal world after an accident causes some unusual changes in her. Billie is a great main character, trying to change, questioning herself, trying to be a good mother, but still attempting to enjoy her new life. It's a theme that resonates with many middle aged and even younger divorced women. I think you'll truly enjoy this first book in what promises to be a great new series!

I’m fairly certain that since I know all the characters now that the next book will be better. This one had me feeling pretty confused and it was a lot of back and forth. My mind felt as jumbled as Billie’s during a hot flash!

I’m rooting for the Detective and Billie, of course and I’m hoping Billie will put Iona in her place and let it be known she won’t stand stand for Iona’s ornery behavior!

I wonder what the rest of the characters are on the paranormal side of things. Is Harper going to reveal something herself? This cast of characters is quite a spectacle, but I’m sure that next murder they’ll all put their heads together again to solve the crime.

And since he’s been introduced, I have my suspicions about the Sheriff. Perhaps he’s a werewolf and that is the reason he and Deputy Greenly do not get along. And Greenly’s mother…a whole brand new can of worms there.

Next is the 2nd book of 4: “Wicked in Glimmerspell”

Midlife in Glimmerspell is the first book in the Hot Flash Homicides series. Billie Buttonwood’s life has been turned up side down. She walked in on her husband with another women half their age and come to find out she is pregnant and he proposed to her and she. She had spent the last nineteen years with Harold and he has never made her feel as though she matter, and now that he has stepped out on there marriage Billie has the chance to make a change. She talked to her niece in Glimmerspell and has a place to live and a job.
Little does she know that her new life will be filled with more than a fresh start, she will get a whole new experience living in the town filled with tails of other worldly things, as well as a murder victim falling into her arms on day one. This will definitely be a change from her old life, but will it be a change that she can handle?

Such an enjoyable read!

I actually enjoyed this visit to Glimmerspell; the locale has its own mysteries with a high probability of future reveals. Billie, her daughter, and the town's residents are newly introduced so there's only a vague sense of them (with the exception of Teddy, who unfortunately appears to be an irritating dingbat), but the tidbits given lure the reader towards wanting to further the acquaintance. The mystery is surprisingly complex, with reasonable red herrings, multiple logical culprits, and an unexpected resolution. There are many potential storylines that provide fodder for future installments, which is what a well-crafted premier should do. And that interaction between Billie and Marceline...! I can't wait to get back to Glimmerspell (as long as there's no tedious bouncing between Elliot and Cash).

After discovering her husband’s betrayal, Billie hoped moving to Glimmerspell with her daughter would provide them with a fresh start. However, Billie quickly becomes the prime suspect in a recent death. She decides investigating the crime herself is the only way to clear her name. In a town full of secrets, and weird powers that seem to be activated whenever she has a hot flash, will Billie be able to discover the truth and clear her name?

Midlife In Glimmerspell is the perfect introduction to new characters in a new town. The author did an amazing job with this one. The characters are all very entertaining. The developing chemistry between the female and male leads is intense. This is a very fun read and I recommend it to all those seeking a great time. Well done to the author.

Oh my goodness, Addison Moore does it again! This book takes us to the town of Glimmerspell, a mythical place, that has gained two new residents, Billie Buttonwood, and her daughter. Billie has had a few tumultuous months, and unfortunately for her, life is not done messing with her. When Billie has a hotflash on her first day at her new job, she gets more than she bargained for. While still reeling from the hotflash, a murder occurs. It will take everything Billie has to stay sane, with the help of some new friends, a "frenemy", and a hot homicide detective named Elliott, to clear her name. Billie will have to dig deep to uncover the town secrets in order to catch a killer. Will she be starting a new life in Glimmerspell, or meeting her end? Start reading this great tale to find out.

Wow, does Billie ever have issues! She moves herself and her daughter Harper to Glimmerspell to get away from her cheating ex-to-be. And immediately gets decked by a huge hourglass filled with sparkly sand, then is accosted by a dead body. And sees her ghostly dead niece. And then gets hit with hot flashes that move her around in time. Billie is not having a good day.

But the incredibly handsome detective who is looking into the murdered body is also looking at her in a rather interesting way. And so is the equally handsome sheriff. What a time for her to swear off men.

There are all sorts of shenanigans going on in Glimmerspell. And this is just the beginning for Billie.

I am so excited about this new series by Addison Moore! After Billie finds her husband in bed with another woman she packs her things and moves herself and her 16 year old daughter to an enchanting town called Glimmerspell. They may be in search of a fresh start but they are in for so much more. First thing they encounter is murder and Billie is a prime suspect! While she wasn't expecting this it gives her the motivation to help solve the murder mystery and she discovers lots of things in this enchanted little town along the way including a few strange things she didn't know about herself. This is a great book to start out the series and I throughly enjoyed it!

A new series from Addison Moore? I couldn't wait to check it out, and Glimmerspell did not disappoint! This book is a brand new series, but ties into Addison's Cozy Cottage Mysteries & Murder in the Mix series, in a way. However, I think out of all of Addison's cozy mysteries, this series may turn out to be my favorite. It's easy to find yourself rooting for Billie, the main character, and loving the secondary characters as well. The mystery, paranormal aspects, and humor kept me entertained and turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. I can't wait to read more of this series.

The anticipation for this book was huge, and it was totally worth it! When life turns upside down for Billie and Harper, they pack up and move to Glimmerspell. Where the stories and rumors of the paranormal run rampant, it seems to always have snow, and new beginnings start with a homicide.
Hot flashes, Murder, and unexpected time travel debacles makes the transition a little different than planned.
I found myself multiple times laughing out loud, turning the pages with anticipation of more, and 100% convinced this will be one of my new favorite series! The hardest part comes at the end when you have to wait patiently for book 2!

I have to say that I am loving the new series by Addison.

Who thought that coming home and finding your husband in bed with another woman would be the easy part of your life?? Moving off to a new town and having a hot flash and traveling time.
I have to say, what a way to start off a new series. I can not wait to see where this one takes us. If any of Addison's other series are anything to go by then this will be another awesome hit.

Don't waste another moment, get the book now and start reading and having a great time in glimmerspell.

Hot Flashes, Hot Guys and Cold Bodies

Hitting midlife can be hard when the hot flashes start, but it’s even harder for Billie who finds her husband Harold in bed with a coed. At a loss and feeling betrayed she heads to work for her niece Morgan at the Haunted Book Barn in Glimmerspell; a beautiful wintry town rumoured to be home to vampires, werewolves and fae.
It is long before a dead body turns up along with an arrogant yet hot detective Elliot.
Billie does her best young Miss Marple impression to find a killer.
This is a fun, fast paced and cosy midlife mystery.

An amusing, time-travel romance. At least once you get through the first chapter in which Billy catches Harry, her husband, in their bed with a coed. She moves to Glimmerspell afterward with her daughter, Harper, to work for her niece at the Haunted Book Barn. From that point, the secrets of the town take over her life. The tit-a-tat with Detective Greenly is pure pleasure.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Romantic. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

I am definitely in the minority but this book was awful. I would not have picked this book up except for it being a bookclub pick. There were way to many characters. There way to many super natural elements. The main character Billy was in a long term marriage, catches her husband cheating, and immediately goes boy crazy. This is a cozy mystery and there was so much talk about sex. AND it was cringy. And you tie time travel to hot flashes it suppose to be funny but no just weird. Once again I am in the minority.

Billie is starting her life over after getting rid of a dirtbag cheating husband and moving to Glimmerspell to live with her daughter Harper. After the murder of a man she's been talking to she knows it's up to her to find the culprit before she takes the fall. I can't wait to see how this new series continues.

Wow

Billie and her daughter Harper move to Glimmerspell after she finds her husband with a much younger woman. She is working at her nieces bookstore and gets hit on the head with an hourglass. Strange things start to happen after that. A murder, which she is a suspect, and finding out there just may be more than just humans living here. She's out to solve that murder and clear her name. There is more but I don't want to give anything away so read this book.

I like the hot flash premise

I have never cared much for the transmundane concept, although I love Moore's stories and characters (not all of them, some are too selfish to be endured -I hope none of these new ones develop that way). I like the middle aged heroine and her quest for self realization.

Excellent Cozy Murder Mystery

I love the Lottie Lemon mysteries, also by Moore. So, I thought I would check out this series. I was not disappointed! I love the inclusion of the baking podcast/show. The characters are endearing and the writing is hilarious. A great mixture of a small town, mystery, cozy characters and paranormal activity.
