I gave this a try because the premise sounded really interesting, but it ended up being too slow-paced and slice of life for me. I got bored quite often as I was reading and could only read a couple chapters at a time before I lost interest, hence why it took 4 days to read such a short story.
The MC is Li Shuoxing, a popular sci-fi writer who publishes his novels online. One day, he checks his phone and is surprised to see a game called Love Bar installed. When he checks it out, the game creates a lover for him called Su Mingqian, and essentially he has to provide for Su Mingqian and improve the latter's favorability score towards him to unlock more functions.
The twist is that Su Mingqian isn't just a character in a game but a real human being who's inside the game due to some circumstances. It takes a while for Li Shuoxing to figure that out, as Su Mingqian starts off with complete amnesia and doesn't remember anything about himself, which is in line with a game character. However, the MC is is constantly surprised by how complex and Su Mingqian's thoughts are, to the point where he wonders if there's a human behind the character.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
Even though the premise is really interesting, the execution fell flat for me. Most of the story focuses on their daily interactions, which went pretty slowly. Either they're figuring out some new feature in the game together, such as growing pumpkins or doing some limited time event together, or Li Shuoxing is IRL either stressing out about writing new chapters or interacting with his fellow authors in the WeChat group chat. It takes a long time for the plot to progress and we finally get a glimpse into the mystery behind the game and why Su Mingqian is in it. Slowly they figure out that the game will periodically drop "plane tickets" that take them to one of Su Mingqian's past memories, which are key in helping him regain his memories.
The final reveal was interesting but doesn't answer all of my questions. We learn that Su Mingqian was shot in the brain trying to protect his brain child, a super intelligent computer called Ask, and his physical body lies in a coma. According to the doctors, it's unclear whether he will ever wake up. The game is Ask's way of trying to help Su Mingqian. But how does he know that Li Shuoxing is Su Mingqian's fated lover, and how does Su Mingqian regaining his memories in the game help his comatose body wake up in real life? None of this is really explained, so I wasn't very satisfied with how the story ended.
Aside from interactions of the two main characters, something else the story spends a fair amount of time on is the novel that the MC is writing, called Nine Crossings, and the various popularity contests that Nine Crossings gets involved in. Some of the contests get really intense, and the MC's fans start offering to film themselves crossdressing and dancing in said dresses in exchange for votes. However, I was super not interested in these parts and ended up skimming most of them. Every time there was another contest, I was like "not again...."
The romance gets off to a rocky start initially due to a series of misunderstandings. For one thing. Su Mingqian is under the impression that the MC is female for the first part of the book given the MC's feminine author name and fondness for pink, and it takes him a while to recover after realizing the MC is actually male when the voice chat function is activated 1/4 into the story. Eventually, Su Mingqian comes to accept the MC for who he is, and their relationship gets as fluffy as it can be given their 2D/3D interactions. Honestly it was a little too fluffy for my tastes. The MC constantly refers to Su Mingqian as his cub and talks about "raising his cub", and at some point Su Mingqian also gets a chibi doll version of the MC in the game that he calls Xingxing and loves to dress up. These two are too much!
The writing is quite humorous in nature. There were plenty of funny moments that had me chuckling. For example, when Li Shuoxing goes on a "hotpot date" with Su Mingqian at Haidilao, and the server brings him a larger portable screen to connect to his phone so that he can see Su Mingqian better and he's super impressed with the level of service at Haidilao. Or all of the hilarious chats in his author's group chat about the trending topics featuring the MC, like when he trends for his "hotpot date" with #Haidilao paper lover, or when he trends for offering up 1 million yuan to anyone who can catch the thief who took off with his phone in the subway.
Another highlight of the story for me was the MC's constant struggle against the game to not spend more money, but the system knows exactly where to hit him where he's weak. For example, when the game introduces the concept of a credit card, the MC firmly rejects it initially but gives in moments later to buy all sorts of clothes and other things like a new lounge room to improve Su Mingqian's quality of life. Luckily the MC is a very successful author in real life and makes plenty of money from selling his novel IPs to TV and game studios, otherwise it'd be a very slippery slope to bankruptcy for him XP
Some of my favorite moments from the story:
When Su Mingqian realizes the MC is male and favorability drops from 999 to -999 in one go XP
Su Mingqian spoke abruptly, “Is your voice better?”
Li Shuoxing: “Yes, it’s better.”
Su Mingqian shook his head. “Your voice isn’t better.”
As his voice fell, favourability -999.
?!
This number was so exaggerated that he didn’t respond for a moment. He instinctively replied, “My voice…”
“No!”
A shout rang out from Su Mingqian.
His whole body shook hard with agitation. He said incredibly loudly, “No, your voice isn’t better at all!”
As his voice fell again, another -999.
-----------
The MC loves to complain that the game is cheating him of money XP
Li Shuoxing had been wanting to complain for a long, long time. “Cub, I’ve actually guessed that this system is unusual. After all, it can carry you. It’s a bit mysterious no matter how I look at it. After knowing that you’re a scientist, I also speculated at one time that it was made by your friend to save you. But it’s really… it’s really too good at cheating Krypton. Every design, every word, even a simple punctuation mark, is full of the rotten smell of money.”
+i’ve been wanting to read some modern slice of life romance with no bigger plots to give my brain a break and this delivered lol + li shuoxing & su mingqian’s r’ship is very sweet & silly i enjoyed their interactions!! the game stuff was pretty fun + i liked reading about li shuoxing’s experience as a contracted author on the chinese novel platforms it was interesting to see!! + side characters were fun and very found-family like!
- god i hated su mingqian’s backstory it was so ridiculous and annoying 😭 - did not like the excessive online fandom reactions like sometimes they were unnecessary - the remaining 20% was draggy and i skimmed through everything i couldnt take it 😭 very idealized happily ever after where everything works out magically and everything good that can happen does happen and thats just not my thing
Dragged a little bit at the end but it could still make me laugh out loud. I love the author group chat deeply (the subplot where they kind of accidentally organise for health insurance for webnovel authors! Friendship and also workers rights).
Extras are super cuteeee! the story felt a little long at times. but the wonderful wrap up made up for everything. A good read if you have time! i want to be in love with a scientist and writer too. T_T.
it was a bit draggy at times but the concept was super interesting and the author's note after the final chapter of the main story captured my heart so i'm rounding the rating up
It was a cozy read and the mystery was very interesting at first. But there was just too much filler for me and it ended up being more boring than I expected it to be.
Sweet, fluffy, philosophical, well written. Even the stories within this tale are heartwarming and well written. The description may be confusing, but it's worth your time if you want something sweet with a heartwarming and somewhat relevant plot!
