Bash Back! Ultraviolência queer

Rate this book

I knew relatively little about Bash Back! before reading this book, it was just something I heard about from those who were apart of it. Before reading this, I only knew about one particular action (mount hope) and a vague description of others (as confrontational and ridiculous), I also only read one essay ("Toward the Queerest Insurrection") and heard excerpts from two others ("Preliminary Notes On Modes Of Reproduction" and "How It To Be Done In The Ass"). So when I head about this Anthology being worked on I was exited, as Bash Back! seemed really interesting, and I was then eager to learn more about it. It was really interesting and fun to read all the included communiques and Theory/Essays that were included within this book. They really helped me to understand the various actions, Ideas, and conflicts that took place in and around Bash Back!
over all really sexy stuff, and of course (in agreement with the only other review of this book so far) Up the militant Queer Hooligans!

Conhecer a rede Bash Back!

Reads extremely fast, you'll laugh, you'll get angry. A fantastically angry queer rush from start to end

an excellent collection of texts, that even though they are already from ten years ago, permeate a really strong zeitgeist of queer resistance against oppression. included also is self-abolition of the queer identity — the recuperation of our complex existence into marketable and academic categories. while you can take or leave particular writings, this is absolutely a must read.

a refreshingly witty and fabulous collection. Bash Back! as a network, and this collection both served as essential in breaking through the still-present psychology of victimization pushed by liberalism. a needed intervention in the Queer ecosystem. not for the tenderqueer faint of heart. (and, most curious after a revitalization of Bash Back! as of 2023)

“Those who keep up with academic queer theory will surely be aware of the self-described “anti-social turn” in Queer Theory. It seems that the newest trend within the queer academy is to focus on the queer negativity, to critique society, and to refuse traditional politics. At a time when society itself is falling apart, when unprecedented amounts of human beings are recognizing that they have NO FUTURE and are proceeding accordingly, we must call this academic trend by its name: recuperation.

Some idiot tries basing his thesis on the queer riots at the G20; Judith Butler delivers a speech at a conference at the New School about “queer anarchism”; Jack Halberstam seeks to valorize the negative and trace the anti-social turn; a class at the University of California is called ”criminal queer” (yet the instructor denounces the activity of insurrectionaries on that very campus)—one after another queer academics line up to jump on the negativity bandwagon. Each appropriates the activity of insurgents toward the ends of strengthening their own careers. They take anti-social activity and use it to reproduce the Academy as a central engine of society itself. This is the ultimate treason. In theorizing about the activity of Bash Back! it is my ambition to demonstrate real queer assaults upon the social order. In doing so, this collection should clearly expose those for whom negativity and revolt are mere matters of image.

Queer insurrection demands that each of us become a theoretician. More importantly, it demands that the anti-social turn, the turn against society, remains in the streets. Our revolt and our theory must be inseparable from our daily life. Toward this end, Bash Back! can be read as an attempt to expropriate queer theory from the Academy and put it toward the service of queer revolt; to dynamite the distinction between theory and life. For the sake of organizing this book, we split the texts between essays and communiques. To a large extent this is a false dichotomy that doesn't accurately describe the activity of Bash Back!, which never recognized a distinction between its theorists and its combatants. Rather, it sought to queer this distinction and offer a praxis wherein theory is embodied in the very activity of those who theorize. A book that declares NO FUTURE offers only words. A riot that declares the same demonstrates a step toward insurrection.

Death to the Academy!”

Some really valuable essays, worth the read but my gods, the introduction is meaningless pedagogical garbage for the sake of pedagogical garbage.

"... With the revolution complete and the black flag burned, the category of queer must to be destroyed..."

a collection of work completely of its time - and one which informs current struggles and serves as a call to action.

It's been two years since this book was released, and I'm only now getting around to reading it. (The honest reason is that I never wanted to ruin the spine on my own copy and have finally borrowed a friends'.)

I remember the hype when the pieces in this book were first published (mostly online), but at this point in time a lot of it seems like History. And while it may be an exciting history that allows some of us to reminisce, it speaks of a scene that I no longer see around me.

Anyhow, this is good stuff and still had me amped at some points, but also pushes me closer to despair when considering the lack of this sort of action now. I am always more interested in the attack than the orgy, and QUV definitely puts the focus on the insurrection, even if it is–pardon the pun–bound together with the sex.

4.5 stars. An important and informative historical document- showing the on the ground details of strategy, tactics, and ultimately internal conflict thru the "rise and fall" of an insurrectionary network/tendency/gang/whatever...

a super inspiring, very entertaining read...

highlights for me were the communique "in support of autonomous animal action; call for trans-species solidarity with tillikum", the section by gender mutiny, and the conclusion "bash back! is dead; bash back forever!"

great book, well organized and laid out...absolutely fabulous

Once upon a time I was in a socialist group marching on Harvey Milk Day, and Bash Back! showed up, and I thought they were a joke. Now I realize Bash Back! was Doin It Right and the socialists were the joke. This was a good book too, FWIW.
