A good overview of the state of AI in law as of 2020, GPT-3 is also briefly mentioned there :) A bit biased as authors are ex-founders of Kira, however they disclose it and focus on the practical examples of AI use by lawyers

This book serves as a solid foundational guide for legal professionals exploring artificial intelligence, particularly as it stood in the pre-generative AI era. Written by the founders of Kira Systems, AI for Lawyers does an excellent job of demystifying AI for legal teams and highlighting practical applications in areas like contract analysis, e-discovery, and legal research.

Though published before the explosion of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, the book’s core message remains highly relevant, AI is only as good as the data infrastructure that supports it. Waisberg and Hudek emphasize the importance of structured, accessible, and centralized data, something that law firms and in-house legal departments must still prioritize today.

From my perspective, that’s the true value of this book in 2025 is it helps legal professionals understand that before deploying generative tools, their foundational systems must be in order. If your NDAs, contracts, and key documents are spread across emails, local drives, or disconnected platforms, even the most powerful AI tools will struggle to deliver reliable insights. On the other hand, when documents are organized and centralized, for example, in a secure contract repository, AI can efficiently review agreements, identify risks, and support faster legal decision-making.

Overall, AI for Lawyers remains a well-written, practical resource. It reflects the state of legal AI in 2020, but its lessons are forward-compatible: no matter how advanced the technology becomes, data hygiene and legal operations maturity remain prerequisites for success.

Very informative about the state of AI in the legal field. Received this free from the Litera table at ILTACon22. I must read for lawyers wondering what AI is and how it is and will continue to impact the practice of law.
