I don't really remember what drew me to this book but Yellow Raven by Ronald G. Therriault is one of the best books by a former soldier I have ever read. I am not much for poetry but the poems in this book is fantastic. The telling of a mans life growing up as an native American in the thirties and forties is very interesting. His telling of serving in the army for 25 years through two tours in Korea and several in Vietnam without sheltering the reader from the damages one can get is raw. I would have loved to read more about this individual and some of the things he encountered but I have selldom got so much information in so few pages.
An interesting book about a young native man who had a hard life and didn't have direction so enlisted in the army. We follow him from training to Korea and Vietnam and he does not mince words. We learn the true horror of war but are amazed at how Ronald G. Therriault continues to strive for promotion and remain true to his dreams. A fascinating book.
It was a short and easy read and the author had a rough time growing up. However, his political views and his comments about Vietnam aren't even accurate. Talk to somebody that was actually there in later years and knows the truth about Vietnam and they will tell you that a loss there is greatly exaggerated. Ronald Reagan the worst president ever? Yeah, and what color is the sky in your sick and twisted world, fella?
