This is kind of a strange book. We're at the end of the Republic with even Goth Sullus dead and gone. There's really no government in the galaxy. Most of the worlds that were part of the Republic are attempting to pretend there is still a Republic because they probably have some Senators or Representatives at an Embassy that hasn't been torn down yet. That's the case with Kublar and that's the planet this book takes place. Yes, we're back where we started in book 1!

Kublar hasn't exactly prospered while part of the Republic. In fact, it's been treated pretty badly. While the indigenous population is mostly passive, they do have some terrible tribal wars and that's been causing most of their problems. The Republic attempted to establish one Tribe as the ruling tribe, but that didn't work so well, so they brought in the Zhee in hopes that the two would start fighting and not mind that the Republic was around running their planet. Bringing or encouraging the Zhee to come to any planet other than their own is not a kind or considerate thing to do. The Zhee attempt to take over and if not outright get that done then they just try to kill as many of the "unclean" beings that populate the planet. But, someone has come to Kublar to fix things.

That someone is called Big Nee and he's quite rich and powerful. He has established a considerable mercenary army on Kublar and made friends with quite a number of Kublaren tribes. We're going to follow a couple of mercenary squads and one individual as they attempt to accomplish missions setup by Big Nee who is also known as Mr. Nilo. Carter is the main squad of mercs we follow around. Most of the work they are doing right now is just clean up and by clean-up, I mean they are picking up dead Kublaren bodies from some kind of previous fight. Not the most glamorous of work, but they are getting paid very well to do so. And that's the key to all of this. These guys are former Legionnaires who have suddenly found themselves without a paycheck. With the Republic gone and no real administrative organization to the new Legion, they aren't getting paychecks so they've gotta' do something to feed their families. So, these form Legionaries, Marines, Army and Basic solders are on Kublar under the employ of Mr. Nilo. And he pays well if you live to collect. Carter has a good squad of Mercs with even one guy who doesn't appear to have any military background but is still quite skilled.

The other squad we find is commanded by Hopper. There is only a quasi-military structure to this mercenary organization. Apparently not enough time was allowed to form a real military type chain of command through out this entire mercenary army so they play it as they go and try to get things done with what they have. Hoppers squad has been assigned a mission to secure an underground museum that Mr. Nilo wants very, very badly. How badly could cost Hopper and most of his men their lives.

Then we meet up with Jack Bowie who appears to be some kind of secret agent that is undergoing some kind of test for Mr. Nilo. He's been instructed, as a test of his skills, to kill one of the high priest in the Zhee temple. This is not going to be easy since the Zhee temple is crawling with Zhee obviously. He's also on his own although his does have comms with Mr. Nilo's HQ and they are providing him with some intel and oversight as he heads towards his target. He will eventually also be required to secure the museum, but not for the person who he thinks he's working for. A little twist is coming.

And back to Carter's squad. They also are eventually going to have to help Hopper's squad in securing the museum. It seems that Mr. Nilo has been busy suppling the Kublarens with brand new weapons and encouraging them to take back their planet. Unfortunately, the Kublarens seem to think they should be killing everyone, even their mercenary allies! So, there is a lot of fighting in this book. It's not that hard to follow and it's pretty interesting. You get the idea that Mr. Nilo, who does actually show up, is kind of like Goth Sullus in that he has big ideas for Kublar and the entire galaxy. Still, he's not like Sullus in that Mr. Nilo appears sane, or at least for now!

Not sure where the Galaxy's Edge series goes from here, but it will be back with book eleven, "Legacies". I've already got it on my list.

A new start

Well another segment of this story begins. It's a bit slow introducing some new characters and the aftermath of the fall of the Republic. It only really starts coming together towards the end. Plenty mysteries and very few answers onward to book 2.

Enjoyable Read

After just reading the beginning of this book, story ...... I knew this read was going to be good. It was excellent throughout, although died a bit at the end.

Plot, subplots, pacing and action were well above the genre standards. Authors made same old, same old ...... new, refreshing. I’m not sure if this a spoiler, but ...... story begins with former Republic Legion, Marines, etc as mercenaries, tasked with cleaning up after a battle that they were not in. Authors used the thankless chore of loading dead enemy onto trucks and introducing us characters, background and story setup.

I was amazed at the character development, even minor characters. They were able to convey a good sense, feel of characters.... regardless of their roles and their parts of the story. Dialogue was good throughout.

Twists and turns, mysteries..... maybe too much? I enjoyed, just got frustrated when I thought I knew what was going on... then a flip.

At times, I was confused. Either information was in another book in the series that I missed or.....? Eventually, the light comes on. Reading other stories from previous series helps.

The weakest part of story was an ending that was a little lame. I guess you write good, solid story that’s part of a series and......cut, finish story quicker and a little short. Then final scenes imply resolutions coming, next book. We’ve all seen that before.

Meh.

I don't mind the change of narrator (I love both Ray Porter and RC Bray ) and I don't mind the alternate pronunciation of Chhun's name (new characters might not know how it's pronounced). But I didn't like Carter and I didn't like Bowie. I didn't care overmuch for the way the plot progressed or even its focus.

What I did like was the action - although even I felt like I was stuck on Kublar - and the whole alien artifact thing. But seriously? I think the authors have done enough at this point to set up the whole world, so to string us along with just the possibilities of another plot setup was just flat annoying. If what was at the end was the focus, then why wait until the end to reveal it? There weren't enough hints beyond "what we're doing here is going to change the galaxy." Ok, well, WHAT IS IT ALREADY? Apparently it involves alien artifacts and a myth. OK but honestly they took an entire book to reveal that small detail. Come on!

Takeover occupies an interesting place in the Galaxy's Edge series, in a couple of ways. One, it follows a couple of completely new characters, both hired mercenaries of sorts: Carter is a Chhun-like everyman soldier, while Bowie is a skilled assassin. Two, everything takes place on Kublar, which hasn't seen such direct attention since all the way back in Legionnare. And three, this is a bridge story, which shows how the galaxy is getting along in the aftermath of season 1 while setting up a lot of characters and plot points for season 2.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The new POV characters aren't especially complex, but they're likable enough. It's fun to see the kublarens get some meaningful development. The violence is a bit brutal and sometimes uncomfortable; Carter gets involved in a lot of Kublaren tribal warfare, and participates in some merciless massacres in the process. I think the discomfort is somewhat intentional, though, as it sets up a kind of gray morality that's still working itself out in the chaos of a galaxy without a clearly dominant power. The new major galactic player who gets introduced here, Nilo, is really interesting, in large part because I'm not yet sure whether I should be on his side or not.

I do miss the main characters from the previous books though, so I'm hoping to get to revisit them soon. Glad to see the writers haven't run out of ideas though!

I think the recommended reading order goes back to the Savage Wars trilogy after this, which I've been looking forward to for a while. Hope it's as exciting as I've heard.

Not a bad book, but it doesn't have any of the main characters in it, probably simply so the authors can introduce some new ones for this next "season".

The story follows a group of mercenaries, working for a company called Black Leaf, who have been hired to help the Kublaran tribes gain their independence from the remnants of the Republic, the Kublarans allied to the Republic, and the Zhee.

The story also introduces us to a "James Bond" style operative, hired by the same man who is hiring Black Leaf, who uses him to assassinate a couple of the high-ranked Zhee, before sending him on a mission to recover Savage tech that is hidden on the planet. However, it turns out that the middleman between Bowie and Nilo is really working for Nether Ops, and the whole thing has been a plot to take the Savage tech for nether Ops own use.

In fact, this is my only complaint about this book. Bowie is a great character, and you really get to like him, hoping after he succeeds in his mission that they manage to get to him before he dies from his wounds. But he is killed "off-screen" by the Nether Ops team, (or so it seems), and no-one even mentions his loss, or the fact he's missing.

Oh well, on to the next book..

More great characters in a return to a familiar location

Kindle Version: If you are new to the Galaxy's Edge universe, this book could be picked up and enjoyed without knowing a ton about the first season of any of the series. New characters are introduced that are great - and Takeover involves a bit of clock and dagger not seen in other parts of the series. So, if you like intrigue AND action with your sci-fi, then you've found the right book.I

If you already enjoy GE and the books (and audiobooks) then you'll enjoy a trip to Kublar once again.

I loved this story even though I wouldn't recommend it for kids. A tad more steamy and bloody than first season stories and minor cursing has popped into the later books. I'd say PG-13 would be a fair rating. It's not over the top but I know Anspach has said, in the past, that he purposely wrote "clean" stories in the past... so maybe the minor additions have been added to give the story grit (even though it didn't need it to be an excellent, fun, fast ride of a read).

Before I start my review I will say that I have read everything I can find in the Edge universe. I've also read everything from Nick Cole and Jason Anspach and picked up a few other authors along the way. I'm invested in the worlds they have created.
There's a however coming. However, I found this difficult to swallow in these worrying times. The not even thinly veiled racial stereotypes converted into species begins to say more about the authors than the storyline. I know that the Zhee and the Kublaren have been around since the beginning and that it is the times that have changed but for me it didn't feel right.
With this put aside, the new direction post Goth Sullus (I thought he was just misunderstood) and Tyrus Rex mixing in with the savage era, with new heroes to learn and new enemies to hate-like bodes well if the story develops along the lines of previous series and spin offs.

While I was sad to see the fall of Goth Sullus and his empire, there is no shortage of excitement in the next season of the Galaxy's Edge saga, beginning back at Kublar, where we were first introduced to the Legion and the dumpster fire of the galaxy.

Readers follow a mercenary force controlled by a new player, with his own goals for the future of galactic civilization. He is a figure of ambiguity and the authors as always do an excellent job of showing the limited perception of the warriors on the front lines or the political operatives engaging in infiltration and assassination, with only a few glimpses of the big picture as it's gradually revealed.

I won't say more for risk of spoilers, but there are hints of a greater conflict to come, with terrifying eldritch forces and high tech black magic stretching back to the earliest crucibles of galactic struggle.

So grab your bucket and saddle up!

If I could rate this a 3.5/5 I would. This installment continues to expand the Galaxy's Edge universe with solid action and progression of the overarching story. However, while the book delivers on the military sci-fi elements and intricate political maneuvers, it didn’t grab me as much as earlier entries in the series.

The narrative introduces some compelling conflicts and character moments, but the pacing felt uneven at times, making it harder to stay fully immersed. Despite this, the groundwork laid for future events keeps it a worthwhile read for fans of the series.

Masterful beginning to a new season.

Continuing a series after a big arc has concluded can be difficult. Too often people rehash the old stuff or do something that is so different it doesn’t seem natural. Takeover side steps this, dropping us back into Kublar in a way that feels reasonable and natural, rather than just being too lazy to invent a new world. We get the same high quality writing and action that we’ve seen in other GE books here and an exciting opening to a new season of the series. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book.

I did not like this book until the Epilogue. This book reads a lot like Legionnaire, which I of course liked or I would not have been on book 10 in the series. What I did not know was that this was a new "Season" of the story. Although the events of books 1-9 are referenced in passing throughout this book, there is no direct link to any of the characters until the Epilogue. This was frustrating while I was reading the book. Now that I am complete, I am hoping that the new release will catch us back up with the characters of Season 1.

This was another great book in the series. I was afraid the writers would find it impossible to impress me further after the epic story of season one. Effortlessly, I remain a die-hard fan. I do miss characters like Wraith, Tyrus, and Chunn but the introduction of members of team Nilo leaves me clamoring for more. And of all the narration by Ray Porter on the Galaxy Edge series, this was by far my favorite. He nailed it, KTF style.

This is the five-star rating system I use:

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

If for whatever reason, I go back and reread a good book, I will change the rating to five-star because I read it again.

Found this one took a bit to get rolling, but by the end where it fits into the grand scheme was apparent. I was happy that it dropped as an ebook now and not in July as planned, so hopefully S2b2 will follow that much sooner. Can't really say much else without getting into spoilers, so if you've not read it yet, git 'r done.

I was skeptical about a new "season" that wasn't going to focus on the character's I've become very invested in. Was absolutely pleased with how this book turned out. Good characters, the lore of the universe continues to expand (yes, we all love the Savage stuff, keep it coming) and the new characters are both interesting, and make sense in the world they've built. Excited for the next one.

It was an interesting story but I really didn’t care too much for any of the characters. It just jumped from battle scene to battle scene without much explanation of what the characters were doing, why they were doing it or many character or plot insights. This may improve as the story expands but I’m not sure I’ll keep reading.

This is for the audible version.

Not sure why the change in narrator. Can only assume $$$... Not a good move.

Also the story was difficult to follow and I didn't find it as enjoyable as the original series.

Good recovery from the last 2 books in the savage series. Story is getting good again and not just focused on gore and shock value. I love the complex characters and intricacies of tale they are spinning here.

Good sequel!

Well I’m still not sure what the end goal is here but I enjoyed the privateer perspective on this sequel. It was interesting not having legionnaires but being ex legion.

Interesting continuation

After the fall of both the empire and Utopia, I was curious how the story would, or if it would, continue. This acted as sort of a baseline story to introduce you to the new key players and their objectives. Looking forward to the next.

Great continuation of Galaxy's Edge and introduction into Season 2. The ending leaves off on such a good cliff hanger and great conflict painted for a post-republic Kublar.
