"In the world of the elite, nothing is as it seems..."

Hendrix:
It’s funny the things you notice as a child.
Like the way people uneasily glance away from me whenever I catch their eye. Or the way a stranger seems to smile happily at other children, but when I say hello, their smile looks more uneasy than warm...

But as I approach the steel gates to the elite Arthur Academy, I can’t help but take a long-awaited breath towards my freedom. Finally, I have the chance to build the life I want. A future. Something that gives me more to live for than the daily beatings my childhood only ever knew. The girl I used to be doesn’t exist here. But even as the confidence grows about a life I now have control over, I can’t help but feel there could be something else waiting for me here. Something I’ve never faced before.

And it isn’t something I could prepare for.
And preparation is what got me out. It got me here.

I can’t afford to lose this opportunity, because if I lose this hand, it’s more than just a loss.
It's like not being able to breathe. Not being able to fly.

Paxton:
I grip the leather ball in my hand, feeling the weight of the year pressing down on me. If it was just football, I could deal, but with my last name – it's everything else that suffocates me. The Arthur Elite is what they call us, and we each have our roles to play. But my fathers given me the next two years to do what the hell I want without his interference, before he’ll own me and I'll become nothing but his pawn.
After that, when college is done, I dread the life I’ll have to lead. The role I’ll be forced to play.
It should be simple. Just stroll through the steel gates and be the crown they all see; but I can’t help but feel there is something lurking beneath the surface. There is something different about this year that I sense inside my dark soul.
And it isn’t something I am prepared for; even when staying ahead is the one thing that ensures my next breath.

Because when I lose a hand, it’s more than just a loss.
It's like losing a limb. A bird breaking its' wing.

And without that - I can’t fly toward freedom.
And my freedom right now, is all I have to hold onto.

In the mood for another Bullymance / elite tale? Broken Wing starts with meeting Hendrix's family when she was little and we learn that she grew up in a rough family. I have to admit during the book when she's older, that we would find out what happened to Hendrix's family - may be in book #2? Hendrix James has just earned herself a scholarship to an elite private academy and with this, she can hopefully get herself a good education and a job. At school, she is befriended by Luce. It also seems that she has attracted the attention of Paxton Reed - one of the three elites of Arthur Academy aka the Kings of the school. The thing though is that Paxton isn't necessarily free to date who he wants as his father has an arrangement with Amber Westwood's family. Amber is the captain of the cheerleading squad and the Queen B and now that Pax has Hendrix in his sights, Amber is determined to make Hendrix and Pax's life as bad as they can be. Even if it means releasing a few secrets that she has up her sleeve. Broken Wing by Kathleen Maree was a good start to this new series and helped pull me out from a two-week reading rut, I have been stuck in. I am now looking forward to reading Book #2 of this series when Kathleen Maree releases it.

Broken Wing by Kathleen Mare’e was an excellent novel. I signed up to read this because the cover was so cool, but I found a fast-paced, addicting read inside that cover.

Told from both Henrdix and Paxton’s point of view, I found Broken Wing to contain deep characters. They are relatable, with their flaws and past issues, behind their attractive exteriors.

Broken Wing wasn’t just a romance. It had twists and turns, with complex characters. I’m really interested in seeing what happens next and recommend giving this book a shot.

OMG have to have book two now!
I was lucky to get a ARC to read of this book and despite not being a genre I often read (college books) I really enjoyed it.
We are introduced to Arthur Academy a super elite school where the Elite kids rule...
I’m not going to spoil anything but will say I found some of the angst in the beginning hard to read but about a third in I was sucked in and had to find out where Hendrix and Paxton would take me.... be prepared for a cliffhanger ending.
Lucky book two is up for preorder so I won’t have to wait long!!!

Kathleen Mareé has a writing style that draws you in. Her characters are flawed and come full of baggage. There is always more going on then what is first presented to us, as the reader. There are twist and turns, cliff-hanging questions, and shocking revelations that come with each one of her stories. Her newest book, which is the first of her duet series Arthur Academy, Broken Wing is shocking, disturbing, raw, and an emotional roller coaster.

Our female protagonist, Hendrix, is trying to start her life over. She grew up on the wrong side of the tracks with a father who was abusive and a mother that looked the other way. As a young child she didn’t know any different, but as she grew up she knew something wasn’t right. Once she was able to escape her daily hell, she tried to start over on her own. She ended up getting a scholarship to a prestigious college. Problem is, this school is for the elite of the elite; and Hendrix is far below that.

Our male protagonist, Paxton, is attempting to escape the life plan his father has road mapped for him. It may seem, to an outsider, Paxton golden-brick-road is the dream, but nothing is what it seems. The façade that is around him by his family, friends, and the school puts him on a pedestal that only others dream they could sit on. Paxton doesn’t want to be anyone’s idol of a dream life. His only outlet is football, but that may be taken from him too.

Neither of these two characters trust others, but they can’t stop themselves from the cosmic pull they feel towards one another. Everyone and everything around them is keeping them a football-field apart, but with hidden glances, meets, and messages they find ways to connect. To everyone around Paxton and Hendrix, they are complete opposites on the outside; however, they suffer the emotional and mental turmoil.

There were many things I liked about this story. There were somethings I was confused by or couldn’t wrap my mind around. I liked the flaws in Hendrix, and the details to Kathleen did within the story, to bring her to life. For example: the reason Hendrix always has her hair in a braid; another being Hendrix book bag and shoes. These little details make us feel a closeness to Hendrix that others just physically see, but as the reader we feel a connection.

Sometimes I didn’t understand Paxton and his choices. Maybe I will in the next book. He just met Hendrix and immediately feels this connection with her. Another thing I was confused by was the setting. They are at an Academy, and are college age, but it comes off more like a high school. The fact that they all have lunch at the same time and schedules that don’t seem to vary by day. It was difficult to grasp the college life, with some of those instances.

The supporting characters are a great in the story. You honestly don't know who to trust. You can tell who the true villain is, but there is always more. I am just waiting to find out what the next book brings.

Besides those few things. I did enjoy reading the book. If you have read “The Jade Series: Books 1-3” by Allie Everhart; or, “Paper Princess The Royals Series” by Erin Watt, and enjoyed them. Then you will enjoy this story too.

Nothing is as it seems in this disquieting tale filled with college classicism, bullying, and secrets…so many secrets.

It’s a total new start. A start where no one knows me. Where no one knows about my past, about my family. Where I’m not that girl. Where I can finally be someone else. Finally.

Many people think Hendrix is out of her league when she arrives at the elite Arthur Academy, but she has moved on from her horribly abusive upbringing by receiving a scholarship to a prestigious college. She didn’t come here to fit in. The Arthur Elites call scholarship kids “charity cases”, but she has worked too hard to be here and she’s not letting anything or anyone stop her from achieving her goals. Until she meets the king of the elites, Paxton Reed. She doesn’t need any more drama in her life, but he’s the elite bad boy who always gets what he wants and she is in his sights. Despite the warnings from friends to stay away from him, she starts to care for the side of Paxton that no one else sees. Until his ultimate betrayal destroys her trust and reveals the selfish and entitled man everyone says he is. But, then again, “nothing is as it seems”.

We keep to ourselves. We get our shit done. And we don’t let people inside. It’s our non-spoken rule. We can’t let people get too close; and it’s not because we are far superior like they’re led to believe, but it’s mostly for their sake.

Paxton is the star quarterback and the golden boy of Arthur Academy. He can get anything he wants, but all he wants is to be in control of his life. Paxton is his wealthy father’s pawn who must do as his father says, or there will be consequences involving Paxton’s mother. And then his disgusting father makes a business deal that involves destroying Paxton’s life. A deal that he has to honor or his father will bring destruction to those who Paxton cares about. Including the new girl who has melted his mask and his heart. He liked Hendrix more than he should. Will she forgive him for what he has to do?

I love Hendrix's strength, integrity, and honesty. Despite her abusive past, she handles confrontations very well from her first meeting with the extremely bitchy Amber to her first meeting with the intimidating Paxton and his elite friends.  She doesn't back down and it's refreshing.  Paxton is a complex character with a lot of weight on his shoulders. He's sick of the cocky and golden boy façade he hides behind to live in his fake world and it's touching how he feels he can be honest and real with Hendrix. His life is so messed up and all he wants to do is protect the people he loves.

There are several supporting characters with secrets in this book who I really like and who I hope have a major role in further books in the series. Lucy “Luce” stands out to me because of her immediate and loyal friendship with Hendrix despite being from different backgrounds. Austin is another unlikely friend aka bodyguard to Hendrix. The brooding Mercedes takes some getting used to and the hilarious and sex-crazed Gabe is another great addition to the story. Tucker is Lucy’s cousin and is truly hated by Paxton. And let’s not forget the vile Amber who really gives her best mean girl impersonation when it comes to Hendrix.

If you enjoy angsty new adult romances with unresolved secrets and a shocking cliffhanger, give this book a try. I can’t wait to pick up book 2.

Thank you to Ms. Mare’e for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

Hendrix is getting the chance to start fresh, The chance at a future and to finally be able to live her life in peace. Getting a four year scholarship to the elite Arthur Academy means freedom. She gets to escape her past, judgment, stares, and never ending bruises and pain. Here at Arthur Academy no one knows her past. Here the girl she used to be no longer exists or so she hopes.

“It’s like losing a limb. A bird breaking its wing. And without that – I can’t fly toward freedom. And my freedom right now. Is all I have to hold onto.”

Paxton Reed is Arthur Elite royalty. Captain of the football team, king of the school and the guy who for some reason despises the scholarship students. He has a lot on his plate...football, school and dealing with his father’s crazy expectations. The next two years are supposed to be his. His freedom before he is forced to bend to the will of his asshole of a father. What he didn’t anticipate his two year plan including is Hendrix James.

“I knew without a doubt that when it comes to Hendrix James, I was completely and utterly fucked.”

These two don’t have the smoothest start. Pax is kind of a bully and Hendrix is determined not to get her heart broken. They are drawn to each other and have some crazy intense chemistry. But so many secrets and outside forces stand in their way. There’s your token catty mean girl, tons of drama, a shitload of angst and a ton of feels. I loved Hendrix. Her past hurt my heart but her determination, loyalty and strength were amazing. I went back and forth with Pax for a while. Mostly because sometimes the choices he made had me cringing but the farther we got into the story we realize not everything is as it seems. Sometimes there is no other choice and we do what we have to do for the people we love. There were some fantastic secondary characters in this story that I can’t wait to see more of. Of course, there were a few I’d rather not see again. This book does end on a bit of a cliffy with a lot of unanswered questions. Great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see where the author leads us next!

“I may have to hurt her to keep her safe, but as far as Hendrix and I were concerned-we weren’t over. Not by a long shot. We hadn’t even got started yet.”

Broken Wing is the first book in the Arthur Academy series and I was lucky enough to read it before it’s release date.
Although it’s not the normal genre that I enjoy reading, I couldnt help but be drawn in by the two main characters POV Hendrix and Paxton. Coming from completing different upbringings, Hendrix and Pax both attend the elite college Arthur Academy. Hendrix being a scholarship student and Paxton being an elite, Captain of the Football team, QB, king of the school.
I enjoyed getting to know both of these characters and others also in the book, I now cannot wait to find out more of what happens in this story!! Hurry up with the next book please!! The next in Arthur Academy series Golden Crown, will be out VERY soon. 🤞🏼

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of Broken Wing, Book 1 of the Arthur Academy Series and WOW, how thrilled am I!

Paxton - King of the Arthur Elite, his future set out before him.
- “The charity cases, the scholarship kids, I hated having them here, it was a mockery to have them come to this school where these over privileged a**holes ate them for breakfast”.

Hendrix - A scholarship kid trying to build a future.
- She didn’t have a plan B. She didn’t have a life to go back to or a past she remembered fondly - this was it!

What starts out as a high school bully romance, very cleverly evolves into so much more.

Not everything is as it seems........................

Kathleen Mareé has delivered again! I could not put this book down, I had to know what happened next!
I loved the way the story telling gave us both protagonist views! This allowed me to delve deeper into understanding the characters and the choices they made. This is not a regular fairytale love story, it's real, it's gritty and it tackles the brokenness in our world.
I can't wait for book 2!!!!!

It has been a minute since Kathleen Maree released a new goodie for me to devour and wow what a little gem it is she has delivered with Broken Wing! I loved it! Thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end, I loved how the story evolved in the masterful way that Kathleen has with words. I am so happy to have more to look forward too with it being the first book in the Arthur Academy series. Such a beautifully broken emotionally blissful story that I highly recommend!!

Nobody told me this had cliffhanger! OMG... How many months do I have to wait for the second book?

I really love this book. My first thought was that it was going to be another Queen B bullying the sweet Heroine, but I was very wrong.

Arthur academy has it’s kings and Queens that rules the kingom and it’s people. The have money and the world loves them, but they have so much darks secrets, intrigue and awfull parents that the only thing they want is to get out of there.

Hendrix has an awfull past, something that no children should get from the people who has to love them the most. She gets an amazing oportunity to get a safe life at the Academy, so she goes expecting the best. Unfortunally she caugh the eyes of the King, Paxton Reed, who at first looks like the rich kid with no problems, just enjoying life and playing football. But that’s the opossite to him, he has the world of his family on his shoulders.

This book is addictive, you want to know all the secrets and family problems right away but the author play her cards well and give us one secret at the time.

All I have to do now is wait for the second book, and hopefully many more books because we have a lot of amazing characters that I’m sure have they own fantastic story.

*I receive a ARC copy for my honest review*

Hendrix is a young woman who has had a very difficult life, that’s why when she comes to Arthur Academy she thinks to leave all the bad things behind, to apply herself in her studies so she can start a new life away from everything.
On the first day of her I know who will be her great friend and supporter, Luce, and with her also come Gabe, Mercedes and Tucker.
She will too meet the Elite: River, Banks, Austin and Paxton, the latter will be the one that ends up captivating her.
Also meets the queen bee in the school, Amber, who has her sights set on Paxton, and who will make her life miserable when she discovers Paxton’s interest in the new girl.
The relationship between Paxton and Hendrix is somewhat strange, he is attracted to her, bc she is different from all the girls at school, but at the same time he has to keep up appearances and keep Amber and his father happy so Hendrix will be safe. He feels jealous of Tucker, who later we discover that he is not that straight arrow guy, and Paxton feels that he must protect her so he entrusts that mission to Austin, who ends up becoming a true friend of Hendrix.
The book is very good and the best comes in the end, leaving you wanting to know what will happen next. I’m already counting the days for the next book.

I received a free ARC from Goodreads New Adult Book Club for the promise of an honest review.

It was good. I difficultly trying to figure out if they were in college or high school. Hendrix, the heroine, is only 17 and was a scholarship kid. She was from an abusive home and has a chance at a fresh start. She was trying to make a new life for herself. Paxton is the golden boy of the school. He is waiting to turn 21 and get his inheritance so he isn't under his father's thumb. Paxton is drawn to Hendrix but because of a deal he has made with his father he cannot pursue her but she ends up tangled in the web. The way the book ends, you want to immediately read the second book.

It isn't written all that well. I don't know if it because I got an ARC that there are misspellings and grammatic issues - if this was done on purpose then it is will be a well written book.

The typos, grammar and punctuation needs some serious attention. Started reading book 2 and already in the first chapter even, the problem persists. I don't mind a couple of typos but the mistakes just keep on coming and that can really ruin a book for me. The story did keep me captivated enough though.
